I went in shortly after 11pm, and an employee told me I could not purchase NON-ALCOHOLIC beer, "because the law says so" -- and she proceeded to give me a discourse on how there's no such thing as non-alcoholic beer, just as there is no such thing as decaf coffee (as if those two things are related in any way). So-- I looked up the law, and she was, in fact wrong. Beverages containing .05 ABV or less (including the one I had hoped to purchase) are exempt from state AND local liquor regulations. The Liquor Control Act of 1934, [235 ILCS 5/1-1 et seq.] Title 3 Chapter 3 Section C. states: "Alcoholic liquor" includes alcohol, spirits, wine and beer, and every liquid or solid, patented or not, containing alcohol, spirits, wine or beer, and capable of being consumed as a beverage by a human being. The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to any liquid or solid containing one-half of one percent, or less, of alcohol by volume. This exact language is also stated in Batavia's Business and License Regulations. Train your employees, and maybe discourage them from spewing legal 'knowledge' that they clearly lack. Absolutely terrible! Really don't know why we went here?!?! Oh wait, yes I do, we needed just a couple things so thought we'd drop in. The isles are narrow, boxes on the floor full of items to be put on shelves but not a employee to be seen. We needed 2 items from the deli counter.....we should have walked out! The scales were covered with pieces of food, hope it was food, obviously not wiped down in a long time. Meat/cheese slicers were equally dirty! It (deli department) was a complete $hit show! Nothing was organized, from employees to appearance. We are tempted to throw out the food we bought. Kane County Health Department would have their work cut out if they paid this Jewel a visit! NEVER, NEVER again will we go to the Batavia Jewel/Osco! EDIT. This is a reply to Dawn M., business manager. Seriously Dawn, you want me to "chat' with someone which will land on deaf ears? Probably the most awkward layout I've ever experienced. The dairy section is split up between a couple cooler aisles that flow into freezer aisles, but there's also stuff on the end caps. I almost lost my mind here searching for sour cream. After walking up and down these aisles like a mad woman, I finally saw it in the refrigerators with the milk. While butter, eggs, cream cheese, yogurt etc were all in different areas. I also had a similar experience with chicken tenders. Were they in the freezer section? Nope. By the meat coolers? Nope. One of those open coolers in the center? Nope. Finally gave up and asked the butcher and she pointed them out to me. They were in an awkward short diagonal case near the meat and adjacent to the milk refrigerators. But hidden behind a large display. Do not go here for deli meat if you are in any sort of a rush. They use the numbered tickets and while it seems like things might be moving quickly, they usually don't. It may look like there's plenty of employees behind the counter, but don't be fooled, they are slicing meat for online orders. I've waited here in the middle of the afternoon on a Tuesday for half an hour. I was too scared to get out of line and have to come back and wait again. My review was originally 2 stars, however I have given it 3 stars because every lotto ticket I've gotten here has been a winner. read more

Working here is an absolute nightmare, some of the customers are complete assholes, I was in a bad mood I was just doing my job tho some dick just snapped at me thinking I was taking it out on him and swore at me. Can someone please acknowledge it's time to pony up for a bathroom remodel? Most gas station/truck stop bathrooms are a breath of fresh air compared to this locations guest bathroom. It always smells horrendous and looks even worse. This is Batavia folks, I think you can do a little better. This is typically one of the slower Jewels I've been to, but what made me decide to review is that my wife ordered a birthday cake. I was nearby. We had never ordered a birthday cake from Jewel, so my wife was asking for the prices and her options, it took her about 5 minutes to complete the transaction. During the process, the bakery clerk was saying things like, "You need to hurry up and make a decision. I have people waiting." There was one person that walked up behind her about half way through the order. That seems a little rude. It isn't like they have any information available to help you make decisions. read more

As with most other reviews about this store, their customer service is awful! I had the worst experience today with "Tina" at their Deli/Chef's Kitchen when she started making highly inappropriate and insensitive comments to another customer about my 20 year old autistic son who was standing in the bakery area not bothering anything or anyone. The store manager Dustin also didn't seem to have a clue and offered little assistance to correct the employee or be considerate of my complaint. NEVER EVER will I step foot in this store at least without my attorney because I will definitely be pursuing this issue further. read more

This review is for the delivery service... it's absolutely awful. My order was scheduled to arrive at 7 PM I got a text from the driver that it would not be here till nine, so my mistake was calling customer service. I eventually ended up speaking to the customer service manager name Mike at the call center, and this man does not belong in customer service he would be better doing something by himself with the no people around. Basically he blamed the store, he blamed me because by the way anything over four items is considered a bulk order so if you want 5 quarts of iced tea , Jewel-Osco needs a four day notice on that. And in regards to dad he scolded me for not reading the frequently asked questions even though I didn't have any questions. This man was a joke. I usually have a good experience at this store St Charles West side store but today the Thursday before Easter I came in expecting fresh nice looking lettuce. The shelves were sparse and the few Romaine and Red Leaf looked bad. When I asked the produce guy who has thick black glasses if they have any better looking Romaine in the back he snapped at me and said " I just put that out yesterday and it's just fine!" So much for customer service. Needless to say I left the store and did my shopping elsewhere! They missed out on my big Easter shop. I've also heard one of the cashiers yelling at an older woman in front of me once. I said something when I went out the store to the front desk person. She rolled her eyes and said yes he's been told not to do that. I always avoided him as a check out person. Maybe this store needs a little seminar on customer service. read more

In the last year the service at this Jewel has really declined. Now, with the pandemic still raging they took all markers off the floors and customers come up right next to you with no respect to social distancing. This Jewel has a very nice garden section set up every season. The associates do a very good job taking care of all the plants. Much better than places like Walmart, where the plants are left to sit out, and dry up. I have to commend Jewel for the way they hire folks with special needs. I have a family member who works at Jewel, and I see how well they are treated there. I see that a previous reviewer has made some ignorant, and derogatory comments about the special needs people at Jewel. I could make some nasty comments to this individual, but I feel that ignorant people like this deserve to be ignored. This Jewel Osco rocks because we bought some white peaches and they were SUPER SWEET and delicious!!!!! We did self check out and it had a conveyer belt so all your products move to the end of the counter so that you can bag it after you've finished scanning everything. This is waaaay better than the self checkout at the Jewel I live by. You dont have to deal with bagging and weighing your products immediately after scanning it. My biggest pet peeve about self checkouts at Jewel is the machine saying to me "Unexpected item in the bagging area." !!!!!!!!!! All other Jewel Osco should follow this one! read more

I felt so terrible for the older cashier woman when she said to me "I really wish people would be more considerate and wear their masks". The man and his two daughters in front of me had no masks. This woman should not have to be exposed to the individuals who choose not to wear masks. Jewel management should be enforcing the mask mandate to protect their employees. I have shopped this store since it was built. I have given them the benefit (even in the number of stars). I've seen 85/15 ground beef as high as 7.99 while I can buy the same vacuum fresh meats from Linz usually (not always) for 3.99 delivered. The checkers are the strength of this organization and I know most of them by name. The store manager has been there for a time and he knows exactly what I am saying and does nothing about it. Over the years I have seen top quality produce reduced to what it is today: even in the winter the onions smell bad and have bugs flying on them. Want something from the deli counter (if you can ignore that some looks a little age worn). Today I saw 6 women behind the counter with one customer being attended to and no one calling numbers. Finally; we are in the season of failed coolers. Last year ice cream and frozen foods. This year fresh foods as you walk into the store by the self serve salad. My question: does the potato salad and perishable foods get put back out eventually when it finally gets fixed ?? Certainly no one would know. Albertsons is clearly not investing in this store so why should I invest my time and money into something no one seems to care about. There are good competitive choices in this market which I participate In. I shop value; value to me is buying a well priced green pepper that lasts more than a day. I cannot plan my menus with one days notice so it goes bad. Money wasted; lesson learned. I have no ax to grind I have max years invested in this store and I worked retail at a senior management level to understand store operations. I normally always go to Jewel for lunch meat because I love the deli counter. It blows Woodman's deli counter out of the water. The associates are always very helpful. This past weekend (Sunday) i went and bought my daughter lunch meat. I always buy Sara Lee low sodium chicken or turkey breast. It had slim all over the one edge. The Deli counter workers leaves a lot to be desired. My husband was there waiting for his number to be called...he was the only one in line at the time...the workers were standing back in the corner talking and laughing and just have a good old time amongst themselves. My husband finally spoke up after standing there for 5 minutes for someone to notice he was waiting, they all said we will be with you in a minute when we are done here. They were not doing anything work related. When they finally came over to get his order, my husband told them that it wasn't good customer service to make people wait while they were just standing in the corner obviously talking and laughing. The guy looked at him and said whatever man. What do you want. He was a very unpleasant person to work with. We are very seriously thinking of changing our business to Wal Mart.
