I needed some items appraised for my homeowner's insurance policy, so I called an auction house that I'd recently used. They, in turn, referred me to Gina D'Onofrio. I immediately called, and left a message with a brief description, to which she immediately returned my call. On the phone call, she gave me a rundown of what she does, as well as her pricing. I agreed and we set up an appointment. In her email confirming our appointment, she again described her appraisal, as well as best places to park and their rates. As I sit staring at my engagement ring that I got appraised back in Novemeber, I thought...I told that lady I would write a review for her on Yelp, so here it is!! I needed an appraisal for insurance, so of course I researched on Yelp for those 5 star reviewed places. I almost went with someone in Culver City, but a read a review that left a bad taste in my mouth. Anyways, Gina is great! She is so nice and knows what she is doing. The building her office is in is so historic and beautiful! The way it works is that you take your jewelry to the office, Gina takes notes, photographs and then completes the appraisal in a few days. My fiancé and stayed in the office while she did her initial appraisal; she looked at the ring under her special equipment and took notes on its condition and features. She also took pictures and talked to us about jewelry and the specific piece I we had given her. At the end, Gina cleaned my ring and noticed that a few diamonds were loose (there pavé diamonds on the band). She recommended that I take the ring to have them reset. Gina finished her appraisal in an appropriate amount of time and emailed us the report. I was initially very nervous that we had paid more for the ring than what it appraised for; to my surprise Gina's appraisal and the price we paid were not more than $200 difference-which as far as I know isn't bad at all. Gina met me on a Saturday morning and spent more than an hour grading the stones and the ring's workmanship quality. Her grading was in-line with the GIA report for the center stone (without using it to bias her initial analysis) and she did so many tests I truly understood what service I was paying for. All the while, she was very pleasant to converse with while she was doing he data mining of the ring. Her subsequent appraisal report was extremely through and more than I expected to get by any means. Her appraised price was in the ballpark of what I paid for my ring, so I know she was actually grading the true market value of the ring and not just throwing random numbers around (I never told her how much I spent).
