A man experiences severe back pain, so bad that he cannot get out of his truck or walk and calls 911. EMTs pick him up & give fentanyl on the way to JFK Main ER. He arrives at the ER & vitals are taken. According to the medical records, the pain "started at work after heavy lifting". The man never got out of his truck, never made this statement. (Record also states he is a "current every day smoker". The man has never smoked a cigarette in his life.) They send him for a CT scan, which just shows some degenerative changes". The nurse sticks a lidocaine patch on his back. Then no one comes to see him. A nurse walks by & a family member asks has anyone taken his BP recently. Her reply,"Did you ask him?", meaning the patient. What kind of snarky response is that??? The ER was not busy, but the patient, with the fentanyl wearing off, is now extremely uncomfortable. The ER physician, Dr. S comes in to tell the patient he's being discharged. The family member tells the doctor that the patient complained of urgency & painful urination that morning. The doctor tells them to go have his prostate checked. NO LABS WERE DONE. A simple urinalysis would've shown that the patient had a UTI. There was tenderness in the right lower back area. But Dr. S ignores this and sends the man home. T - temperature (normal) I - Infection (painful urination) M - Mental Decline (patient was anxious & "tired" by discharge) E - Extremely Ill (patient felt the worse he's felt in his life with severe pain) TIME - the signs of SEPSIS. In fact, during the Severe Sepsis Screening, male RN SG, documented YES on the heart rate, which was 128 on admission, & 127 on discharge. DO NOT GO TO THE ER at JFK MAIN. Some pee in a cup. Just a simple CBC. These tests were never done & would've shown that this man had sepsis. Instead, he was discharged. By the head of the ER. After only an hour being home, the man was taken by his family to their local hospital where immediately a sepsis alert was called. An E coli infection from the urinary system... He was admitted & started immediately on IV antibiotics. Remained in the hospital, where they also discovered a mass on the patient's bladder. Cancer. A complaint against Dr. S was filed with the FL DOH. But HCA has a lot of money & great lawyers. Nothing is on record about the complete oversight by Dr. S. He gets to practice emergency medicine forever. This hospital was once known to be the best cardiac hospital in PBC. Since HCA took over, it is not #1 anymore. Even their top cardiothoracic surgeon got the heck out of there. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. read more

******BEWARE****** I just walked out of this Hospital because of negligence due to staff. I am dabetic and have a cgm in my arm to monitor blood sugar. My blood sugar was running at 220 and rising so I pushed the nurse call button at 8:35 am, phone was answered and then hung up, so I immediately called back with the same result of hang up, I waited 5 minutes and tried again. SAME RUSULT OF NO ANWER BUT HANG UP! on the 6th attempt a female with a strong accent answered and I told her I needed insulin as my blood sugar was no at 240 and rising, she said ok but didn't realize that she had left phone on and she then told someone else that my blood sugar was at 240 and both women started LAUGHING. I know that Nothing will be done and this type of behavior has got to be stopped. I immediately walked out and left out of fear for my life . I haven't been to this hospital in many years. Although it is technically the closest hospital to me in terms of distance, its poor reviews has kept me from going there in emergencies. But, sometimes, it's just easier to go the closest emergency room! I felt confused and demeaned by the check-in area. To enter, you have to walk through narrow security panels, but then there is no clear path of where to go next, just the security desk directly in front of that. The officer asked me something which I didn't completely understand (cuz I was sick!)- and I said 'yes' and he began writing me up a badge. Other people came in behind me and went straight to the next window, which apparently was the er check in. Now I had to wait to be checked in. In order to get to the waiting room, you have to turn around, pass the security desk, pass more things, and then there is the room. When I was admitted, I was ushered in to a curtained area. There were blood splatters on the floor. The next room was where my blood was taken. It was stuffed with monitors and machines shoved to one side. The person who began to take my blood was asked to leave and help elsewhere, so a new person came in who started over. Definitely seemed unneccessarily chaotic. In final next room I went to, I was put in a reclining armchair and left alone with no visible way to contact anyone that I could see- no pull cord or button, etc. Once it was decided I didn't have anything majorly wrong, I was told to go home, and there was no time to ask any questions. I had to go here twice recently. I was treated with such respect and things moved so quickly. I have always avoided the ER like the plague. But what I realized is that when you are having an emergency issue, it's a one stop shop for everything you need and for services it would take months to schedule with doctors and specialists. Both times I was there, they gave me a CT scan, bloodwork, an IV and meds. I did a lot of research before coming here, and this hospital had the best Google reviews and ChatGPT also said it was one of the best. Yelp seems to really hate it, so I hope my 5 star review will change some minds. I would go back here in a heartbeat for any kind of emergency! read more

Please stop blaming the nurse and blame the corporation! 1 nurse caring for 5-7 patients. Each patient requiring at least 20 minutes or more of the nurses time when he goes in the room.....not to mention there are only 60 minutes in an hour.....and please don't forget the other patients who keep hitting the call light while the nurse is trying to tend to the person in the current room he is in......where is the nonexistant nursing assistant?....... First thing in the morning the nurse has to see 6 of you (I'm being generous).....she has to take your vital signs, she's supposed to do a head to toe assessment, she's supposed to read through the doctors notes and orders and update you and your family members who keep calling, she's supposed to give you your morning meds, she's supposed to take you on a walk down the hall, get you out of bed and help you get a bath.........she's supposed to do this with all 6 of her patients....her phone keeps ringing because people keep calling.....she gets interrupted because the next patient needs to go to surgery........I could go on and on....... The point I'm trying to make is, she has to do all of these things which takes 20 minutes or more and you expect her to be able to treat you like her only patient and be there at your bedside every time you call right away? It's not possible people! She's lucky if she can see 4 patients in an hour They need to hire more staff and get more nurses if they want their reviews higher and want people satisfied read more

I brought my 87 year old grandfather here on Friday night, he has lung cancer and has a huge pleural effusion that needed to be drained. Not only was he in the ER for 12 hours waiting for a room without a pillow, but when he got to his room they said the procedure can be done on Monday. I am a doctor myself and my wife and I both waited until Monday, only to let us know in the afternoon after the interventional radiologist left that he wasn't even on the schedule. I was in the hospital all day Monday talking to nurses and doctors and specialists and no one gave me an answer, just that he will get this done today. It wasn't until I escalated it to the floor director and the director of the OR that this was addressed. If I was part of this system and I was trained at a hca hospital, I would feel so disappointed and ashamed, and to be honest indirectly I kinda do. I cannot say with pride that I worked for this company only that I was matched into this system which gave me the privilege to take care of people to the best of my ability. The lack of communication and the sheer lack of accountability astounds me to no end. I sincerely hope they improve their protocols and that had I not been here, while working remotely taking care of my own patients, I cannot even fathom the lack of communication since none of my family with the exception of my wife speaks English. Do better hca, and realize how important communication is to everyone involved in patient care. read more

JFK has ALWAYS been a bad hospital and now the HCA is involved it is even worse. I went into the emergency room barely able to walk, talk, stand or move on Saturday 10/4/2025 At 9pm. I was seen in the emergency room and set home by 3am early Sunday morning with one diagnosis and some ibprofen. I followed up with a gastro specialist as advised by the first doctor, who gave me another diagnosis and had me direct admitted back to the hospital on Wednesday 10/08/2025 for a hitus scan- that never happened. During that admission I was seen by 2 more gastroenterologists and 2 general doctors who all gave me different diagnosis. as of today 10/10/2025 no one has a current or correct diagnosis for me and I am still experiencing severe abdominal pain. its crazy each doctor advised me not to take the medicine that the previous doctor prescribed. . . funny right! I now have 5 diagnosis , a bunch of prescriptions and a lengthy medical bill for absolutely nothing. I have scars from the catheters being wrongly inserted in 4 different areas on both arms. this hospital deserves 0 stars! They are the worse. the customer service is the worse!! read more

My wife was emergency transferred here from Highlands. The doctors, nurses, aids, cleaning staff. technicians and advocates are all outstanding and deeply caring for their patients. She had two major operations to repair the damage a so called surgeon in Sebring, with an over inflated ego and lacking in skill, caused to her esophagus and stomach. They provided the care and thorasic skills necessary until she was well enough to be transferred to a rehab facility closer to home. I will always be thankful and indebted to the staff of HCA JFK for saving the life of my lovely wife! read more

I have to start by saying I was not the patient, but my 85 year old friend was. She was taken by ambulance to JFK North Hosp, and they determined that she had a very large kidney stone and would have to be taken to JFK Medical Center to have it removed. She has no relatives in our area, only up north. Her relative kept trying to reach the Dr, then the nursing staff, but no one would give her much info and they were almost rude. She tried calling my friend many times, but no answer. Luckily I went to see her and was with her and called her relative so they could speak. She had told me she had just called her relative and asked me if I heard any phone ring. I hadn't, and I looked all around the room but could find no phone. Then a nurse happened to come in and I had him look for the phone, but he acted like he couldn't care less and no phone was found. She never did get one. Then a few days later her relative was able to reach the social worker, and when she tried to ask my friend's status, the social worker said she was going home in 2 hours! Her relative asked how she was getting there, and the social worker said she guessed her family was picking her up. No, she said, I am her only family and I'm up north. Then the social worker said they would have her transported. So I had to race to her home and wait for her. When she was finally pushed into her home in a wheel chair by a gentleman from a transport company, she was not very with it. I helped her into her robe and found there were 6 electrodes still stuck on her body. She had no discharge instructions or medication list. Luckily she has a good family doctor who took care of her after all that. So this is the type of care you can expect at JFK Medical Center. She has been at JFK North before and liked it there, but it's a small hospital and they don't have a lot of specialists so a lot of times they have to transport you to Atlantis. I had to come to JFK with my patient and I was amazed of how a handful of caring professionals can change the world for those in need. My patient was in the Four Central Unit and got into Afib and I saw the Rapid Response Team come in and they all including Everdean Elliot, the Charge Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, Guerdie Henry, The RN in care of my patient that night and Dr Hassani. They all stayed with the patient over 3 hours until she was stable. Even though the Rapid Response Team left, Guerdie continued to care and monitor the patient until the end of her shift. The hospital is understaffed and a joke on week-ends. Nurses and Doctors fail to read charts before deciding on what the patient needs. A Dr. came in to remove a drainage tube from chest without looking at the chart and I mentioned that a ct had been done 1/2 hour ago. He and the drs. he says he held conference with did not know this so he did pull it up and look. He then took the removal tools he bought and said he would be right back. He was, and said the tube could not be moved for another 5 days because they nicked the liver putting it in so the liver need to scab over first. So now my liver is damaged. I am a heart patient. They damaged my kidney without respecting the knowledge I have kidney disease. The nurses that do read the computer charts ask the patient if they want to take the medicines listed. The answer was to do what the Dr. put in to give us. It is a comedy of errors their and even asking for the patient advocate, due any patient that asks for one, is a joke and all yes talk and no action. The big companies that are buying the hospitals and Dr. practices are in it for the money, not for the patient care. read more

We have had very good care by most of the nursing staff and the specialists...however, their internal medical doctors are lacking in knowledge and understanding of patients in need of acute care. They are authorized to over ride decisions made by the specialists. Because of these decisions, our family member was discharged and unable to care for himself. The home healthcare is only allowed on a limited basis. Our family member lives alone and cannot get himself to the restroom in his own. Yes, he is a Medicare patient and not allowed input into the decision to be dischaReed without acute rehab. He was offered the right to appeal the decision, but could be financially responsible if his appeal to Medicare is denied. Baslocally, our family member was forced to go home. read more

My brother suffered a stroke and had his initial care in the Rothman Neuro ICU with outstanding care by the physicians but particularly by the ICU nurses. My 87 year-old mom had a fall hitting her head. She was taken there by ambulance and from the moment we got there her nurse was extremely attentive. Miss Brianna communicated very well. Kept us up-to-date on what was happening. Kept my mom calm and happy they ordered a multitude x-rays and a CAT scan of her head they were able to patch her up With 5 staples in her head and send her on her way all in under less than 3 1/2 hours. read more

Went to the ER after going to MD now and my Primary who suggested I go due to being sick for 2 weeks with itching on my arms but no rash and a butterfly flush on my face. Bloodwork showed a high HS CRP 12.2 actually. The initial nurse who took my vitals was very nice. Asked me If I had been checked for Lupus. 3rd doctor to ask me. I said I hadn't and he said they could run all the comprehensive tests to see what is going on. In comes the doctor with a huge chip on his shoulder. Asked me why I was there. Told me the emergency room was for emergencies only. Basically told me my primary is stupid because what she sees as a high number isn't a high number for the emergency room. Although I had complained about chest pain also the day prior he looked at my bloodwork (mind you this was for inflammation markers only) , said he saw nothing wrong with me and was not going to check my heart that it's probably good. Then proceeds to tell me they don't check for lupus either. Tells me it's probably my laundry detergent. When I explain I have used the same for years he said "Well you know they change the formula and don't tell you". Then when I asked why I was only being affected in my arms he just shrugged his shoulder and left the room. He was going to give me a shot of steroids, some topical cream and send me on my way. Never in my entire life have I been treated so poorly. I will never go back to that hospital. They killed my mom. Different story for another time. I should have known better. The only reason I'm giving one star is for the initial nurse who came in. He was very kind. read more

Nightmare! A few years ago, I had had a scary episode of having sudden blurred vision for a few minutes and was scared I had a mini stroke so went to the E.R. at JFK Medical Center. I was told by a doctor I must have taken hallucinogenic drugs. I'm not a drug user, but the elderly E.R. doctor thought I was lying and did a urine drug test on me. II went to my own doctor the next day who scheduled me for an MRI. The MRI showed that I have a serious illness which apparently caused my temporary vision loss. It was a very bad and time consuming ordeal at JFK and if I indeed had had a stroke I might have been in real danger. read more

Our car was hit by a distracted driver and we ended up at this emergency room and to my disgust my husband received a bill for $48,000.00 This is freaking ridiculous and a highway robbery. Came in to have a pacemaker installed. The doctor was great as well as the surgical Nurses. The nurses in the hospital not so good. One nurse said he would bring me a clean gown, 4 hours later he came in and said "I see you got a new gown " I said yes, I got it myself. I take blood pressure medication at night, and in the morning, my night dose never came I had to argue for an hour to get blood pressure meds then when I took my blood pressure they said it was high. read more

Medical staff are bound to first do no harm, however hospital administrative and insurance provider policies are in direct conflict of allowing the doctors, nurses, technicians, etc. to be able to do what's best for the patient. Not only is this unethical, but it puts great risk to a patient's chance of recovering from their medical conditions. The medical staff's hands are tied by making decisions that force them to release a certain percentage of patients home before they have received full, life saving care. As a result, I simply cannot blame the staff for the care of my father, who suffered a stroke caused by an outpatient visit for a cardiac catheterization. He needed immediate life saving care and was forced to stay at this particular hospital only to be released straight from an ICU floor directly home, which is against protocol to a step down unit. This resulted in an immediate return to their ER within four hours. We were fortunate to have an excellent ER team who also expressed frustration but were not surprised that he was not released to a step down Neuro floor instead of directly home as this happens on a regular basis due to these policies. My comments are directly to the hospital administration and insurance providers, and speak to the state of general healthcare in our country: your doctors and nurses are burnt out from the policies you inflict upon them. They are burnt out from the stress the pandemic has put on them. You do not provide the tools to help them to cope with this, which they very much deserve. They are doing the best they can to save or improve patient's lives within the restrictions you force upon them. These people have chosen to work to help and care for people. You prevent them from doing the work they spent so many years and hundreds of thousands of dollars of education, training and continuing education at their own expense to put patients first. They give up the quality of their own physical and mental health and time with their own families to do this. Consider lives are at stake based on these policies. Advocate for your staff. Advocate for your patients that need your help. Most importantly, do better. read more

Came in with pneumonia I'm still here after day 3 of being admitted ... still don't have lab results. Facility is so dirty they put me in room with hepatitis positive patient and then threw her poop from the bed pan on the bathroom floor causing it to back splash the wall with her infected poop then lied to me about it being poop and when I got mad at them for risking my health they put me in a room which contained an isolated patient and under the sheets of that bed had their poop still on. Second room smelled strongly of c diff a contagious bacterial infection. This hospital is not sanitary the staff really don't care. I actually had security come up because they refused to admit that this was a hazard and I requested to be discharged. I rather go home with untreated pneumonia than stay here and catch something far worse. read more

This is a tough one. I really do like this hospital a lot. I've had surgery there which was wonderful and the nurses were so caring and paid a lot of attention to my pain. I recently brought someone in through the ER with issues and she was eventually admitted to a medical surgical floor. Being a retired Director of Nursing I thought it was important to bring all of her medication's in with the patient. The ER doctor thanked me for doing that. The nurses in the ER are top-notch, so incredibly skilled, hardworking, comforting,and friendly. I would recommend them, the Doc and the ER to anyone and I have. The problem I am having is when I went to pick up the belongings of this patient , who has since been discharged but is in another hospital further south there was something missing. I'm not talking about a sock or a brush. I am talking about a controlled substance. When I got home I called after looking through everything. Everything else was there except this one bottle. Well, after being transferred four times and being told that they had nothing. They said nothing had been logged in. One of the male nurses actually told me I should've sat down in the hospital and made sure everything was there. Yes, I should've sat there and pulled out all of her clothes, toiletries, shoes, glasses, cell phone, charger and done went with it? Laid it out all over the floor? Ridiculous. He accused me of not even bringing it in which is a bunch of crap. I just got the runaround. It would just have been really nice if somebody had taken me seriously instead of just blowing me off. Just because something is not entered into the computer does not mean it's not there somewhere. No one was helpful. I did not accusing anyone of putting it in their pocket for Pete's sake. It is there somewhere and I just wanted somebody to look for it. I basically said "so that's it? A controlled medication is missing and you don't care. You don't have to document it, report it or do anything? There's no follow up. There's nobody to talk to. They said yes. Ok, well that's pretty lax if you ask me. I called about waiting time in the ER for my aging mother. Receptionist said she couldn't say and that I should check the website. When I asked her for the website she said, "I don't know, JFK.com I think". Of course that was JFK airport in NY. After some googling, I found the website which stated 10 min wait. Just waiting to check in was 15 min and when I spoke to the receptionist, he said it was closer to an hour. Admitted after 1:15 or so. So far, this is just another disappointing trip to JFK. Silver lining was that once were were admitted, the staff was very friendly. read more

Father was admitted a week and a half ago they discharged him immediately the next day they seem to have overlooked the fluid in his lungs which is clearly on his x-ray he coughed for five six days choking didn't understand what was going on I called 911 and of course he had more fluid and pneumonia now he's been in the hospital for a week doctor prescribed medication to go in his nebulizer machine they prescribed so he can go home and get breathing treatments since his lungs are basically shot and he's in respiratory failure Pharmacy couldn't fill it because the insurance is asking for a prior authorization basically what that means is a doctor didn't send in any medical notes to a reason to why he needs his medication which is a simple call just send in the doctor's notes saying he has pneumonia fluid in his lungs and he's in respiratory distress now they say they're discharging him even though I don't have the medication parameters were not met and I've been arguing on the phone with them the entire day this place is horrific you could clearly see by his urine that is UTI infection is back however they refuse to do a culture this is a 91 year old man who is bed bound I guess they don't take their senior citizens seriously and are not a priority I was then harassed by a phone call by Mrs Gray saying unless I give her a credit card so it could be charged over $3,000 a day for his Hospital stay he won't get treatment and he'll be in a hallway my other choice is to fight it with Medicare and then hung up on her and fought it with Medicare I will never go back to this hospital again nobody knows what they're doing staff is very limited and the quality of care and doctors are absolutely horrific read more

Worst hospital I have ever set foot in and they had the audacity to charge me a $6,000 bill and when you call them to dispute it, it's some rude new yorker on the phone. First, the nurses are extremely negligent and do not attend to you. Second, the doctors are young, inexperienced, and fake prescribing you medication that causes allergic reactions. The food is the most disgusting I have ever had in my life. If you want to die, be sure to go to this hospital because I only felt like I got more sick.
