I tried everything I could think of--massage, physical therapy, acupuncture, radiofrequency treatment--but nothing gave me lasting relief. Eventually, I could barely walk for five minutes before the pain and numbness would travel down my leg. I felt like I couldn't live my normal life anymore. When Dr. Ajiboye reviewed my MRI, he explained that the degeneration in my spine was compressing the nerves. At that visit, he finally agreed to proceed with hardware removal and a capsular release, but the entire interaction made me feel as though he was reluctantly doing me a favor rather than helping a patient who had been dealing with this problem for months. I also felt rushed, interrupted, and unable to fully explain my concerns or ask questions. His attitude toward me felt dismissive and condescending, and I left the appointments feeling that I had not been given the same patience or respect I would expect from a physician. I completely understand that no doctor can guarantee the outcome of a surgery, and I never expected a guarantee. What bothered me was the inconsistency, the dismissive attitude toward my concerns, and the lack of follow-through. I was told that authorization for the surgery had been submitted, but after that I never received any follow-up from the office. After multiple appointments and months of trying to find a solution for my elbow, I expected much better communication, consistency, and compassion. My sister Barbara was 50 years old when Dr. Sivakumar, one of the doctors who performed her back…read moresurgery, operated on her in December 2021. She developed an infection in her spine. Barbara also had Sjögren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease her doctors knew about, meaning her immune system could not fight infection like a healthy person's. She was HIGH risk. Yet two days after surgery, with an active spinal infection, she was discharged home with IV antibiotics and no medical staff to monitor her. In the hospital, nurses would have checked her leg strength and nerve function every few hours. At home, no one was watching. The infection grew and began crushing her spinal cord. She lost the ability to walk. Then she lost bowel control. These are textbook signs of a surgical emergency. Patients have only HOURS to get decompression surgery before nerve damage becomes permanent. By the next morning, my sister was paralyzed. Even then, she could have been saved from the worst of it, but she waited at St. Francis for nearly two weeks because no bed was available at the hospital that performed her surgery. Nobody treated her like the emergency she was. The window to save her nerves closed while she lay waiting. The paralysis became permanent. Pressure sores opened holes in her body at the facilities that followed. The infection they claimed the antibiotics would control spread into her blood. Sepsis. Her organs failed, her heart stopped, and on July 11, 2022, Barbara died. Her two babies, ages 5 and 3, lost their mother. I became their mom that day, and I watch them grow up without her. In my opinion, none of this had to happen. A two-day discharge with an active spinal infection in an immunocompromised patient was reckless. Every step after it was too slow. My sister didn't die from a back problem. She died from a system that stopped watching her. If you are considering surgery here, ask what happens if infection develops. Ask who monitors you and how often. Ask what the plan is if something goes wrong at 2am. Get answers in writing. Barbara trusted them. I will carry what that trust cost her for the rest of my life. It has taken me three years to be able to write this.
