This place was absolutely cool! It's full of all kinds of rocks, stones, gems, and other unique treasures. The shop is owned by Native Americans -- I believe from the Navajo tribe -- and you can really feel the authenticity and care that went into everything. Prices felt very fair, and there were tons of little trinkets and souvenirs to choose from. They even have a small museum section with fascinating items from a long time ago, which makes it even more special. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. I really appreciated that they allowed me to take pictures -- a lot of Native American shops don't, but they were very open about it here. Outside, the fun continues! There are plenty of cool photo ops -- from dinosaurs to an old car and other quirky displays. If you're ever traveling along this route, this is definitely a must-stop spot. Amazing pieces for all ages! I didn't have this spot on my agenda for our Girls Getaway Weekend but I'm so glad we stopped. This is an amazing shop that offers so many things. There are items for purchase but you can also just admire the amazing artifacts that others have collected. I think kids would even enjoy it. I thought this place was going to be a tourist trap or kind of cheesy. It's not! Super cool rocks, native history collection, huge selection of really cool things made from petrified wood. We enjoyed this store. Unlike other reviewers, we found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Bought lots of stuff -- jewelry, gifts, clothing, knickknacks -- and a small jigsaw puzzle ("Welcome to the Petrified Forest"), which unfortunately had three missing pieces. It was around $6-7 bucks as I recall, so I'll just donate it to the thrift store with a note. read more

Rude staff. We came here with our service dogs after asking politely if it was ok, and the staff was extremely rude and unwelcoming. They made us feel very uncomfortable. They spoke with each other out loud about having to mop the floors, suggesting the dogs are making them dirty. Our dogs are well groomed and obviously better behaved than the staff here. My husband and I spent about an hour here! The first day we stopped by they were going to close in 30 minutes. So we came back the next day to take our time. The museum area was really fascinating! They also have lots of cool rocks for sale! We had so much fun looking at everything! They have an area outside where you can pick your own rock (charge by weight). Their prices are very reasonable. Man this place is amazing! We stopped in since we live nearby and we were so glad! This shop has everything you could ever imagine as far as fossils and gems. They have a section that is all not for sale that will blow your mind. One specimen in particular was what looked like a spinal bone with an arrowhead lodged in it from lord knows when! So cool! I came here 7 years ago, then again 5 years ago. As this is my 3rd trip, decided to write a review. Not much has changed here. A lot of large petrified woods (half the parking lot in fact), and a lot if fossils and rocks inside. I picked up a few fossilized bugs, fish and shells, and my brother picked up petrified woods, fossilized bugs, geode, and fossilized leaves. The price is reasonable and they carry different rocks and fossils for everyone. And yes, their bathrooms are big and clean. read more

This business is not customer-focused. They have almost insulting signs everywhere. If there was only a sign or two at the entrance, that would be okay...but, in addition to the "no backpacks allowed"sign on the entrance door, there are signs all over the store such as "this is not a playground", "Kids, do not touch the stone animals" (these are very cheaply made, tiny, and made for kids!!!), "control your kids" etc. it's overkill and it comes across as adversarial to customers. In addition, prices are high for what you get. The whole place puts out a "we are doing a favor to you, our customers by existing and allowing them to come In our stores...your privilege to shop here is fragile...and we merely tolerate you". (And I didn't even have small kids with me!) Clerks were not helpful and I left without purchasing anything because I was so turned off by high prices and the crabby signs. Great selection of all things ancient! The Petrified wood is beautiful but expensive. We wished they had a better selection of cut- non-polished pieces of different sizes and colors. Or, to custom cut onsite. Super fun to look around and marvel at the geological and archeological history of our world. Also, YELP says they are open on Sunday's, they aren't. Call ahead to make sure they are open, we made that mistake after driving 7 hours to get there. read more

We went to the petrified wood shop hoping to find a good gift for some friends, when we went in they made the costumers seem unwelcome with there signs. Everything was overpriced and they had a five dollar minimum for credit cards. They made no exceptions for a $4.38 transaction. VERY disappointing. read more

This place is so great. My mom and I were taking a road trip in July last year and happened to drive past. They have the coolest stuff here. I bought so much souvenirs for myself and friends. They also have the most wonderful display of petrified wood out in front. If I ever win the lottery I am going to go back and buy up some of the giant petrified tree trunks to spread around my estate. There is a little pond inside that has real live fish and a turtle that my mom and I thought was fake but she pointed at it and it blinked its eyes. Freaky! I wish I got that on camera. I cant wait to go back this year. They have fossils, minerals, Coprolite (Fossilized Dino Dung). (I wanted to buy that but I knew deep down no one would care. I would just have a piece of crap that looked like a really cool rock) Geode's, Meteorites, jewelry made out of neat types of rocks and my favorite wooden carved buffalo's. Just complete a visit to the Petrified Forest National Park? Were the kids noticeably underwhelmed when they didn't see redwood sized forests of rock? I remember having that reaction when I was a young child, misguided as it was. What's a parent to do? Visit Jim Gray's Petrified Wood just outside Holbrook. The "parking lot" alone is pretty close to what your kids were probably imagining. The store itself is huge, an eclectic mix of petrified wood, rocks, minerals and souvenirs. Pick up a small bag of Arizona petrified wood in the store for five bucks, the same kind of wood it's illegal to pick up at the park. Now, I can't speak to the pricing of the merchandise. Much of it seems a bit pricey to my uneducated eyes. Still, isn't that the nature of buying souvenirs? Plus, you really needn't buy a thing to enjoy the Jim Gray's Petrified Wood experience. read more

This is the place to go for petrified wood, fossils, or geods. They have huge piles of everything on the back where they sell it $2 per lb and less. My kids had a great time picking out geods from the huge piles as well as petrified wood. Lots of great stuff to see. Was a 5 star review up until the point I paid. Kids had picked out some blocks of sandstone which she rang up $5 per lb. My kids said it was $1.50 per lb. she argued it was not. Ended up going out and taking a picture of the sign in the piles of stone. So bottom line make sure you remember how much everything is. Didn't even get an apology when I showed her the picture. They do have a great selection and lots of nice stuff to see but just make sure you watch what they charge you. read more

After leaving Petrified Forest NP, I had hoped to stop at of the stores outside the park to buy a piece of petrified wood. Maybe because we were late leaving the park, maybe because of COVID, but the two stores just outside the park were closed. So I drove on. But as I entered Holbrook, I saw Jim Grays and stopped. I was quite impressed with the store. As soon as I walked in, I immediately saw a table with petrified wood. But this was all glazed, and I wanted some with a more natural look. So I walked around. Eventually I found the door on the left side of the store into an outdoor area. They had multiple piles of petrified wood, and it was $2/pound; even less if you got 50 pounds or more. I got 2 pieces for about $11. Back inside, I picked up a small amethyst as a gift. Being so impressed with the store, I looked around a little. These guys had it all - geodes, crystals, fossils, you name it. The ebb had a fossilized alligator skeleton. In the back they had and impressive mineral collection on display. In the middle of the store, they also had some of your more typical Arizona/Route 66 souvenirs (including the sandstone coasters I'd just bought for 25% less than I'd paid). Simply this place was great. If you want petrified wood or like rocks, this is the place to go. read more

This store is large and certainly has a variety of items for purchase. There were a few items that I was looking for that they don't carry (Pay Dirt and Aquamarine) and I was surprised since they are a bigger shop. Pricing felt comparable to many other rock shops I've visited...on the high end. I'm not a fan of polished rocks and they have quite a few. A good stop for anyone with kids looking for trinket rocks. There are "you break you buy" signs throughout, they make that very clear. They do have a large personal collection that is fun to take a browse through. I ended up visiting another of the rock shops here in town after, and found a nice variety of petrified wood and made a purchase there. read more

I had a good time here, It was cool seeing the collection. I thought it would be fun to get the kids some things and a cool side trip for an otherwise "man" driven day. We went to Holbrook so my guy could go see his friends airplane and I picked this place as something I wanted to do. Looking around was cool. It seems that some of the pricier stuff may be priced well (I'm not sure) but the pricing on the smaller things are completely arbitrary, every rock seems to have an individual price on it and rocks that look the same and are the same size (in the same bin) are wildly different prices (like one is .99 cents and another is $4.98??? WTF? My big thing is beads, I LOVE to make jewelry and they had some cool stuff there, but in the end..... I KNOW what beads costs (gems, stone, semi precious, glass and everything in between) Beads that I know I could purchase for 10 bucks a strand were more than doubled and in some cases quadrupled from that price. No, it wasn't a special clasp, were the necklaces longer than the strands... Maybe, somewhat, but not 4x the price worth. It was just a let down. I got some cool stuff for the kids, but I'd have gotten more if I didn't feel like I was being ripped off. The help here was ill kept and inattentive. read more

We've been in this store several times and even came up a couple times specifically to this area to get stuff. Our trip was to go to the Grand Canyon for 3 days, but my husband wanted to stop by here and by another Route 66 Hoodie. Turns out they didn't have the size my husband wanted, so we didn't get this. However, he and our kids got some souvenirs. I'm waiting for my husband or that we would have a home and could afford the $29,000 table that I've been eyeing since we visited this place maybe 1.5 years or more ago. It's still there. Anyway, my dream table. Bathrooms are big and clean and at least in the women's restroom, lots of butterfly stuff and cool art. There are great prices on things, as well as very expensive stuff, so there is something for everyone. I wanted to buy a bunch of things, but walked out empty handed just because I didn't need more STUFF to collect for the sake of collecting. I think this is maybe the 3rd or 4th time for trips we've been here. Love all their cool dinosaur stuff, too. Fun place to go to. Sometimes service is great. Other times, so so. As an avid mineral and gemstone collector I can't say I'm too impressed with this shop. * The prices for mediocre stones are sky-high. Nicer chunks are still overpriced. Small tumbled rocks? Still too high. * You can buy strings of stone beads for $9.98 which isn't bad for certain stones (fluorite, malachite, labradorite) but a lot for others (tumbled chunks, really?). Unfortunately, a $10 bill won't cover it, which is poor planning on their part. * There's a small "sale" section that is worth taking a look at. There may be something that catches your eye for a reasonable price! * Despite the prices, it's definitely worth a stop to enjoy looking at the beautiful petrified wood pieces and some of the fossils placed inside. * The service here is sub-par.
