Marty is a true handyman, and a really nice guy…read more We have an apartment that's...old. So it has a few things that always need fixing up. And I'll be honest, the handyman we usually work with was booked up for months. It actually seemed like all the handymen were. (There's a pandemic out there, and apparently everyone's taking the time to fix up their home.) Marty let me know that he was busy too, and that he was taking some time to spend with his family (and you can't begrudge someone being a good family man). But he was willing to do the work when he was free, which is all we could ask. I also appreciate how he operates. He'd prefer to get photos/video of what the problems were so he can give you an accurate estimate before even setting foot in the place (saves everyone time), and so he can show up with all the materials necessary (saves everyone time and money). His website is also pretty comprehensive; it lists all the things he does, who he is, how he works, and shows work he's done. That's how I found him, and I'm glad I did. I also like that he's willing to admit what he can't do (in our case, it was more involved electrical work). Some folks claim they can do anything, and will do a less than ideal job; Marty will just recommend someone who he's worked with and can vouch for. In any case, we had a few odd jobs that needed doing, and once Marty let me know when he was available, he was on time, and efficient. He did quality work. I thought the pricing was fair for his time and labor, and I would hire him again. That's really all you can ask from a handyman.

It can be tough to find a handyman/contractor for projects, and even tougher to find one willing to…read moretake on small projects. I was pleased to learn about Marty and HV Handyman from a Yelp review, and even more pleased that the review was written by someone from Yelp I actually know in person. Marty is professional yet casual, a nice combination. He was always quick to get back to me when I contacted him in advance of the work, always in less than 24 hours. When I initially sent him a description of the work and a photo, he got back right away with his estimates of time and materials, and cost. Along the way, he was proactive when it came to things unexpected or little adds. For example, he discovered rodent damage on some of my electrical wires, and he immediately offered to take care of that. Within an hour, he had gone and returned to the local Home Depot with the extra materials to address the issue, and the add-in to the overall cost was again reasonable. He did 99% of the cleanup as well, leaving me with about 5 minutes of work to wipe off some dust after he completed the spackling, sanding, and painting. Marty also doesn't over-book, and he is again up front with what he can and cannot do. I've already discussed another project or two I'd like him to tackle once warmer weather has returned. I only hope he hasn't been swamped with additional work requests based on positive word-of-mouth and word-of-Yelp.

Chris has an excellent personality, very impressive on professionalism, that being said, a lot was said that wasn't written down. He said: we take pictures before so we know where the large furniture goes back too. He said: they would bag off the kitchen with plastic as all the furniture would go into the kitchen. We gave Chris the key to the house as we would be away for the Thanksgiving week. He sent pictures with the progress and we felt good about all that. We Venmoed the entire amount out of trust. When we got home we were shocked to find only the piano, 2 small couches and dinning room tables were put back. Oh and semi gloss not Satin finish that we agreed upon. Chris said: oh well we can come back for free to fix that when you move. What? I called Chris immediately to find out why everything wasn't put back ? Chris said: That would be a curtsey call. WHAT ? We should've only sent 1/2 the money up front as We never received a call of any kind back. Our mistake in believing the best from a "reputable company" We expected some amount of dust and we've been cleaning up dust for a week now, still finding more, in the closets, on our clothes, dishes in the cabinets you name it and we dusted/vacuumed it. 4.5 stars on the actual floors, follow up on clean up 1/2 a star.
