This was my first time eating in..we always order take out. Our waiter was Eddie and he was awesome! There was a 45min wait for a table which normally I would never would of waited for a table anywhere for that long but my friend from FL wanted it so we waited. I was Leaving Katy Mills Mall one recent Rainy evening and fell upon this Restaurant for the second time. I Iove Tex Mex and it looked inviting so I decided to give them a try. The Final bill was fair and the food was ok. All around the Food was So-So. Maybe they are a 4 Star on their Best Day and also maybe for this Area but I thought it was Very Mediocre. The obligatory Green/Red salsas, Tortillas, Fajitas, etc.were Ok but they didn't Wow me at all. Service was OK as was the Food. The Queso and chips were too thick for me. Theirs is not a traditional Yellow Chili con Queso. Theirs is more a Blanco Style. It was OK but nothing Great. The Free Ice Cream was very thick and more Ice-like than Ice Cream-like. I have driven by here since they have opened, always been curious, but figured it was for kids, families, and tourists only, especially given its cartoon facade. Today, that all changed as after a medical appointment I was jonesing for traditional Tex Mex, so my wife and I tried it out. Best decision for a while. The chips were fresh, thin and crispy. The red sauce good, not great but will do. The green, jalapeño cream sauce as good as that Austin chain. We also ordered the white queso. One word -YUM! As usual we filled up on the chips.... My wife ordered the chicken flautas (she's a Californian so taquitos for her). 3 very large flautas with green sauce, sour cream and white queso to dip. It came with beans and rice. I ordered the Jimmy Deluxe meal. A pork tamale and cheese enchilada covered with chilie gravy (red chilie sauce for you non-Texas). Shades of South Texas memories.....wonderful. Rice and beans...this was the hot plate. The other plate had a bean tostada, a ground beef taco (on the small side) and white queso quesadilla. Both my wife and I commented that everything tasted so fresh, not the usual Sysco processed food crap. The lettuce, tomatoes etc. all seemed chopped freshly. Tortillas were very fresh. Our server was Jacqueline, kudos to her helping us select as first timers, refreshing drinks and chips and helping the takeaway containers. Total costs was $30 and felt very reasonable for the quantity but more importantly quality of the food. We definitely will return.... We went on a day with nice weather, so we sat outside by the fountain. We were seated right away. The hostess and waiter were friendly. I had only been here once before and was really craving the stuffed avocados they serve. However due to Covid19 they had a very limited menu. Not a fan of that at all but I understand. However the menu was a little too limited. Tables outside were spread out (social distance). The drinks were really good. Food was really good. Not only are they attentive, friendly, and fast... they also make very good drinks. I have ordered chicken nachos and beef fajitas and both were tasty. The beef fajitas particularly; the skirt steak is hot, tender, and well seasoned. Great food, good drinks, and friendly bar staff. This place is go-to for tex-mex if you're in Katy. Bad service and bad food. The red salsa was awful-no spice. It tasted like pasta sauce. The queso was gritty. That's just for starters. The beef fajita meat was burnt. This place was the worst tex mex, mexican food that I've ever had. I ordered the beef fajitas and the meat tasted extremely bad. It was dry and overcooked and there was this strange after taste. Whatever meat they use it was obviously very low quality. Didn't even feel like true fajita meat. The marinade they used tasted awful and smelled like it was rotten. Not only that the salsa sauce that came with the tortilla chips had no texture, it was all plain and sour. I can buy salsa at the supermarket that tastes much better than this. The spanish rice tasted like crap as well. Didn't like the seasoning at all. I can make much better fajitas, salsa, and spanish rice at home. The flour tortillas were nothing special, they look and tasted like the ones you can buy at the grocery stores. The cheap ones that is. I have nothing positive to say about this place and seriously don't understand how this place has 4 stars when the food I got was overwhelmingly terrible. Our usual Tex-mex restaurant is Chuy's, but I wanted to try something new. We ordered EL CAPITAN FAJITAS for two $26.XX (based off reviews), which was sooo good! It comes w/ shrimp, crawfish, beef &/or chicken, & mixed grilled veggies (onions, zucchini, bell peppers) in this creamy sauce (probably not healthy?). The seafood was not overcooked nor salty. We chose beef which was really tasty and tender! The flour tortillas were soft and fresh, the chips and salsa / green salsa were good. Much better than Pappasito's imo- their salsa is watery and bland. It's a lot of food (we had some leftover beef). It comes with guacamole, pico, sour cream, and refried beans or black beans. We ordered an extra side of this since 1 is not enough for 2 people at an extra $2.99 charge. If you want cheese, lettuce, & rice, that's extra too. Not sure how much though. Already kinda pricey. We came on a Saturday at 6pm, it was pretty busy and we waited about 25 minutes (they quoted 15-20 mins so I was getting a lil impatient). So far I've tried the Tex Mex Eggrolls, the Fajita Chicken Quesidilla, Pollo El Dorado, and tonight I had the Ultimate Tostadas w/ Fajita Chicken instead of Pork. They were DELICIOUS! Parking was easy and getting a seat was pretty easy as well, We sat in the bar area so was able to watch a bit of TV. Service was good and food was not bad. If you order online through the TEX-MEX APP - BE CAREFUL because tonight a tip was automatically added to my total. I called the restaurant because my total was less than the charge. Turns out a tip was added on. Why would we pay a tip on an order we're picking up ourselves? The manager told me the system doesn't add the tip that was automatically generated and I must've approved it and he deducted it but I had to talk to 3 different people to get it done. So watch it when placing a "to go" order because it wasn't my mistake or I wouldn't have questioned why my order was that much more after it went through! Manager telling me they can't control the system when it's their system that did this is simply a ridiculous excuse. Instead of him saying the customer must've done this (without my knowledge?) doesn't make him a good manager. We're regular customers and next time any manager needs to LISTEN & check the system.
