Brought Electrolux canister VAC to Jimmy D's Vac Shack in Hollis that would sometimes not start. We thought it was just a power cord issue. It is only a few years old. In order for him to even look at it, there was a $22 bench fee I had to pay. (so I did) He called me the next day saying he needed the VAC hose because the VAC would not run without the hose attached. I thought that was strange but brought it over anyway. After 3 days, I had not heard anything after he had told me he would get back to me the day after I dropped off the hose. He tells me he has bad news. The motor is blown and it would be over $280 for the motor and a bunch of other parts plus labor. (And a 6 week delivery on the motor because it is not stocked by his vendor) I asked what the other parts were needed and he said "just more parts". Keep in mind, we only paid $300 for this vac. He then says it is not worth repairing. I agreed. I then go to pickup the VAC and he proceeds to try to sell me a VAC from his store. I polity decline and head home. So with him saying it was dead, when I get home, I figure since its dead, I'll open it up and see what I find??? Guess what, after taking it all apart, turns out it was only the power cord. I spent $4.95 at the hardware store for a new plug and it now runs fine. Also, I took the hose off and it still ran fine. Hmmm. Wonder if I will get my bench fee back. This guy is sleazy! I have been taking my eletrolux vacs (yes I have two of them) to Jimmys for quite some time now I find him to be very knowledgeable about these vacs I asked him about other brands ie meile and he informed of the brand I was totally floored to say the least. However I am a devoted Electrolux customer and if I have any issues at all I do is call Jimmy's Vac Shack. You cant find a good knowledgeable person these days that would take the time to explain the problem and fix it . I have been taking my 1992 vacuum to Jimmy D's for almost 20 years and I have been satisfied with every repair that has been made. I have chosen to repair instead of replace it because I like my vacuum, it works very well and because I can not get a vacuum as powerful as mine for the same amount of money as I paid for mine in 1992. Jimmy took the time to show me the smaller, lower horsepower motor that comes with the current version of my vacuum and so I chose to replace my motor instead. I have had many chats with Jimmy when I have been dropping off or picking up my vacuum. I find him to be a pleasant, caring, trustworthy person. He has always been straightforward in answering my questions and telling me my options. I have never felt pressured to make a decision one way or the other. Jimmy D's is a small business. I understand the necessity for a bench fee. He can not offer his time and expertise to diagnose a vacuum as a free service and still pay the bills. I am picking up my power brush head tomorrow. It was due for refurbishing after 25 plus years of use. My bench fee will be deducted from my repair as always. I also buy all of my vacuum bags at Jimmy's. He carries a large selection and offers generic bags which are as good or better than the originals and are a much better price. I purchased a small vacuum for my Mother to use on the second floor of her home from Jimmy. I requested information from him and he recommended a small unit which was relatively inexpensive. It has been working well for over 3 years, (even with lots of dog hair), and I am very happy with the purchase as well as the price and quality of the generic bags that Jimmy recommends to use with it.
