Local dive bar. Everyone is welcoming and friendly . Drinks are strong and affordable. Pool table and darts available. They have karaoke on Saturday. No DJ but they have the AMI music you can download the app and choose your own songs. Mixed crowd but mainly older .we had my friends party there and it was perfect . April the owner and her husband chuck hands on. Lee the bartender was fast and efficient even with the crowded bar he was on point . Plenty of parking, this place is OLD SCHOOL, somehow I missed that it's a CASH ONLY spot. Yes, make sure you've got the dough otherwise you're just standing there watching other people have fun! It seemed like a cool place to hang out. But there was one problem I strongly think you should address. My wife and I came in last night. I had my service animal who is trained to detect extreme drops in my blood sugar levels. In the event that should happen she lets me know so I can sit down or get close to the floor so if I faint I don't risk hitting my head from a high point where I can get a concussion or worse. The bartender Lee challenged me and told me my dog was not allowed. I let him know she was a service animal and he said it didn't matter. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure he was just following instructions. I'm not holding him culpable in any way. However I highly suggest you familiarize your staff with the laws regarding service animals per the Americans with Disabilities Acts. Your staff is allowed to ask two questions. 1) Is your animal a service animal? 2) What service does your service animal provide? And that is it, nothing else matters. Again, Lee was polite and professional. But clearly he was either untrained in dealing with service animals, or under specific instructions. Either way it opened up your establishment for fines from Federal government as well as discrimination of disabled persons lawsuits. If you think I'm incorrect you should know I've owned a bar, a nightclub, in addition to holding the position of General Manager at still another nightclub. In total I've worked in the industry for close to 40 years. Now you have nothing to worry from me as I have no intention of filing a lawsuit or reporting you. But you should know not everyone with disabilities is as forgiving as myself, especially since it was my first time coming to your quaint establishment which you should also know that I had 4 more people coming with me, that we had to tell to meet us at another venue in Hayward. We came for the karaoke which was cancelled for whatever reason. But we would have probably stayed regardless if not for the fact that I was not welcome with my very necessary service animal. read more

What makes a belly full of delicious ramen even better? A glass of whiskey, of course. After a first-date dinner, we headed to Jim's for a drink and to continue our conversation. I say this a lot and I'll say it again... I love dive bars. Jim's is particularly dive-y in that it's clearly a locals hangout. If you're looking for anything other than a stiff drink and a seat, you're probably not going to get it here. The bartender knows a lot of patrons by name and people are very comfortable doing their...thing. (Sounds like some wild things have happened here... we came on a chill night. Giants were playing...maybe 3 other groups present) I can respect that. Ordered two shots and played a few guessing games at the bar. When we were ready for our next round of drinks, the bartender was there and ready to pour. A karaoke session broke out, which made for some good entertainment. They also had hotdogs and a condiment stand out. Why the hell not? We ate corn nuts and chilled at the bar for a good hour or so. It's a decent joint and true to itself, not trying to fit someone else's agenda. (You can be the judge of whether that's a good or bad thing) Anywho, bottoms up! read more

Friday night, a lot of people want somewhere to be, somewhere that they can kick back and not worry about a thing. After an amazing night 2 weeks prior at Jim's, I decided to see if the magic was still present for a second time. I walk in to a beautiful rendition of a 70's love song. Don't get me wrong, even if your singing is not amazing, the expert KJs, Noreen and Richie-Rich have a professional set up which allows you to be yourself and not worry about the semantics of audio mixing. They are the nicest KJs you could ask for and will accommodate you if you need to change your song. There are slips of paper provided so that you can take your time to decide. As a bonus, you can see the song book at songbookslive.com and enter the name Kyanni I still have yet to see another karaoke place that has this but it's so convenient that I can't see myself ever flipping through a book again. Since this is a bar, I definitely need to give a shout-out to Lee, another nice fellow who works hard to serve everyone who is waiting for a drink. Just be patient when it's busy and I promise your drink will be worth it. It is a cash only bar (But I don't see that as a negative) and they have an ATM inside the bar and 3 major banks/atms within the same block. There is a pool table which takes quarters and costs a dollar to play. Make sure you sign up if you want to be next. The people at this bar are awesome and will even (gasp!) wait for you to sing your song if it's your turn to go and you are playing pool. That isn't common and is really awesome of them. There is a table and a few chairs right outside if you want to have a smoke and chat. Did I mention the 3 dart boards? See Lee for the darts. Well, I've gotta go, my song is coming up and this is the kind of place that you can have a good time and not be stuck on your phone all night. One thing this bar is not lacking is character. Really, there is very little that the bar is lacking. You would be amazed how much they manage to shove in to this tiny rectangular space. There is a solid crowd of regulars here that for the most part dictate bar activity. Smack dab in the middle of the bar is the darts floor, which also seconds as a dance floor when the said regulars decide to through a little boot scootin' line dancing into the mix. If line dancing and darts are not enough for you, Fridays and Saturdays are when things really get moving - and what gets a crowd hyped more than some good old fashioned karaoke!? When mixed with alcohol, not a lot. When I first encountered this little gem, it occurred to me that this could be a great opportunity for me to get in some practice time with the mike in front of a group of strangers without risk of total humiliation. I thought this, until I heard them sing. I had judged Jim's by its shopping center location, beer brand banners, and tap rum that tastes like soap. I had never imagined that it could be the breading grounds for American Idol worthy stars that it is, and for this I apologize. Needless to say, after hearing the local boys and girls belt out an impressive, while eclectic, playlist, my stage fright reestablished possession and forbade me from joining in on the fun. Another interesting feature of this bar is the so-called "atm." The bar is cash only and the bartender will direct you to their atm at the back of the bar, which rather than dispensing cash, prints out receipts that you hand to the bartender. While the bartender will provide your change in cash, this seemed a little shady and roundabout to me - especially as the $2 charge remained in place. While I try not to go to Union City too often; I'll be spending some quality time in front of my bathroom mirror with my hairbrush in preparation for when I do. read more

The bartender thought we were kinda like "hipsters from SF" and when I wasn't sure what drink I wanted after my first cocktail, asked how me, " we'll, how effed up do you want to get?" I liked her very much. She made a great old fashioned and was very fair with her pours. The place is clean, welcoming, and the people and patrons are very friendly. Negative gold stars for you! Hate to say it but...if "Jim" doesn't know your name he ain't serving you. I only went twice because friends of mine love it there and it's to go and hang out with them. "Jim" must not need money cause I was holding my cash out and everything and he did everything in his power to not make eye contact with me. So I put my money away. I don't want to give my hard earned money to some rude elderly man. Maybe his eye sight is bad or I smelled? or I had a booger? because it was honestly just me at the bar and he still did not want to serve me. I JUST DON'T GET IT? Simple business common sense. If you want business you need to be nice to your customers, not avoid them like the plague. P.s. I didn't think Union City land of the Filippinos and Mexicans would have such a place. jim's cocktail lounge is located next to a japanese eatery in one of the many strip malls in union city. jim's is compact, clean, and update looking. the place is so small it's basically a long bar stand and a few tables for sitdown. the rest of the bar is a pool table and a place to throw darts flatscreens(3):football no draught beer available. lots of bottled beers. had a tall gin/tonic(4.00) and it was really strong. on draught -parking area badly designed. watch out for pedestrians cuz they don't care where they are walking and they give you a dirty look if you don't see them (first).. -crowd mostly older white men. one congenial group. read more

I don't mind dive bars at all. I really don't. I love the chill atmosphere and the unpretentious attitudes. This kinda pushes that territory. Its basically your uncle's den with a few more people in it. The interior is dated and looks cheap. The beers are almost all domestic and the drinks better be simple. This is definitely not a place for after a date to chill. The karaoke music is screeched out by its patrons who are all in their 50's and 60's so its not exactly "hip". If that's what you're looking for, good for you. However, if you're bored on a Saturday night and your plans fell through, Jim's is not that bad. read more

Jim's IS Union City for me. I'm a Soldier in the United States Army and whenever I come home on leave this is my first and last stop (and all the stops in between). The environment that Jim's offers is unlike any Applebee's or Friday's can offer. You can't get this personal experience from a restaurant bar. The owner and all of the bartenders are welcoming and full of personality. Jim's always has something going on from golfing to darts leagues on Tuesday and Thursday, pool tournaments on Wednesday and Karaoke on Fridays and Saturdays. With a solid group of regulars and Jim's friendly look on new incoming people, I take comfort in knowing whenever I get back from Iraq or Afghanistan, Jim's will be here with open arms! read more

I am a big beer drinker, so if you don't have a nice tap selection, chances are I am not staying that long. This is a cocktail lounge, hard alcohol as far as you can see; but for me, its not my style. However, I was just stopping in while waiting for a table next door. We've been here a couple times on weekend nights to play pool and listen to other people sing really bad karaoke. Drink prices are reasonable. $3 for a soda, $4 for a beer. Pool table is quarters 75 cents per game. Karaoke starts at 9pm friday and saturday night. The DJ is reasonably friendly. The atmosphere is comfortable. It strikes me as a no drama kind of environment. Usually an older crowd 40+. I think we were the only ones including the dj that was under 40. Which is fine, like i said it makes it a more mellow vibe. The bartender is not friendly at all. Sometimes he's attentive to you standing there waiting to order a drink, sometimes he's not. He doesn't tell you prices he just takes the cash and brings you back the change. I personally don't like that. Overall an ok place. Nothing special but its quiet and mellow and we'll be going again. read more

I walked in here not knowing what was in store for me. The long bar was mostly empty, older men played darts or pool to the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, and there were glittery streamers of stars in the familiar red and blue falling from the ceiling, reminding patrons that the good lord has blessed America. I felt like I was in my grandfather's den. I ordered a Jameson and Coke ($5.50) that was poured by a somewhat taciturn bartender. He was all business. As soon as I got to the bar, he gave me a drink. When he noticed that my glass was empty, he made sure to walk over and wipe the area near where I sat, anticipating another order. He was close-mouthed to strangers, but still charming. Although he did have some small talk with a stranger with a U.S. marines T-shirt, which might explain his soldier tattoo on his forearm. It was the first time I saw a Lotto machine in a bar (I doubt that the machine's existence came about because of the economy). You can also buy chips, peanuts, and beef jerky. Jim's is great because it comes without pretense, false swagger, or feigned impressiveness. It's definitely for the older crowd. Little known fact about myself: I love to sing, however I am a little shy. So, I do like to go to karaoke bars, but don't like big crowds or big groups so much. I felt like Goldilocks this past weekend who just found a karaoke bar that is just right. Walking in, there was an apparent core group of regulars who greeted each other. Even though we were new to this place, I didn't feel unwelcome. It's a very friendly hometown dive-bar kind of place. Both of my drinks were pretty stiff so the bartender does hook it up. There weren't any long lines to sing. I got to sing two songs, but very well could have sung more if I really wanted to in the two hours I was there. It appeared to be a holiday party kind of situation, so there was some food sitting at two tables on either end of the bar. This seems like it was generous, however, before we left there was the distinct smell of vomit. It did not go away. I had to leave myself, but it's not something that will deter me from coming again in the future. read more

all the reviews here are spot on except the all business bartender rubbed me the wrong way. A bartender is supposed to make people feel welcome and he went out of his way to not do so. You know how you just get a vibe from a bartender, that crusty coot is a lamer. as far as environment, it looks like Jim's was once an ok place but it has not advanced much from the 70's judging from the ancient oakland raiders photos and banners on the wall. What really stood out to me was the COOLER crusty bartender used to store beer. Yea, a camping cooler and minimal selections at that. Love this place. Chris on Friday and Saturday nights will take care of you. Prices are awesome, get hammered for 20$. New Dart Board machines. Crowd is never too rough, and when it does get rough, Chris makes sure the house stays happy. There's not a lot of young ladies at this spot, but a lot of cool people.
