This establishment has been around a long time. I figured that would be a good sign and that the overall experience would be satisfying. I read their reviews before taking my wife there for dinner knowing that it would be expensive and the reviews were mixed. It's one of those places that you need to try but I'll not be going back. The bone-in ribeye was not a quality piece of meat. The French onion soup had very little broth and there was too much breading/croutons in the bowl. The bread buns were average and the salad was okay. The busboy was top notch and the ambience is nice but overall not worth the price. read more

Waitress was friendly. Decor showing a lot of wear and tear and dated. This visit was birthday/valentines on the 15th. My ribeye was so full of gristle/tendons couldn't eat very much and was extremely hard to cut. Didn't look like a typical ribeye cut either. Husband ordered the fish special, the sauce was overly sweet and fish tasted like a salmon patty. Have to pay extra for garlic bread. 45 dollars for a tough ribeye, baked potato and salad was ridiculous. Have always heard great things, sadly a major disappointment. read more

Jim's is a good not great steakhouse. The service was good but got our steak order wrong and couldn't figure out which of the different size ribeyes were which even when they were side by side. Tells me they are charging for a larger cut but not giving you the bigger cut. We were excited to hear they had creamy garlic salad dressing - but it was bitter and had not hint of garlic. First time visiting Jim's since 2016 (which was always stellar on multiple occasions). Not this time! Ordered the date night special for $69.99 because I had received Costco gift cards. Bruschetta rolls looked store bought tasted ok. Salads were apparently pre-made because they had an inordinate amount of blue cheese dressing on them and my replacement was the very same. My peppercorn sauce to accompany my filets had no cream in it and was runny (steak was good but I can do this at home defeating the purpose of going out). House wine, Cabernet very cheap and bad. Wine glasses never filled by staff. Desert website advertised cherries jubilee for desert, no... wrong (false advertising) vanilla ice cream in a dish brought directly from the freezer with old cherries. Emailed the hostess/manager with experience and never heard back until I followed up two weeks later. Rcvd a response informing me all of these issues would be addressed and that's all. As of September 5, 2024, date night still advertises cherries jubilee. They apparently don't care and neither do I so I will never go back and share my story.............so disappointing! This is the great steakhouse of Peoria. Great service. Excellent food. And a live band in the cocktail room for great sounds. First time here and will come back the next time I'm in Peoria. This place is a wonderful steakhouse that cares about their service and really tries to be a top notch restaurant. If you're looking for a great three-star place, this is it. You won't be disappointed. I had the halibut, which was two huge chunks of fish, but wanting another side. My wife had the lamb chops, which were bigger than Elvis. My son had the surf and turf which I will probably get the next time I'm here. The dinner salads are great! We're coming back for sure next time. I was looking forward to a great evening out during my work trip but was introduced to something else, Jim's! It seems from the very start things were not right. I walked in and there was nobody to seat me for a bit. I ordered dinner and appetizer after waiting ten minutes for the waiter to come. Just thought I would get it all in as not to wait longer. The dinner salad came as in a full size dinner salad. The stuffed mushroom appetizer that I ordered never did come because the server forgot to put it in. I was served my cajun ribeye and it was cooked well done when I ordered it medium. All of this waiting and slow service has me there one hour at this point so I decided not to wait longer by sending it back and I finished it. Sorry to say, I can not return. Me and a groups of friends went out last night for our Valentine's Day date night. This place is absolutely beautiful but honestly was not happy with how we were served or how long we had to wait when we had a 7:30 reservation. We sat down around 8:30 then ordered appetizers and waited about an hour to get our dinner order in. Not to mention our food just wasn't good. And we did get served the wrong food and had to wait even longer. We were very nice about the whole waiting and everything but we won't be coming back. read more

We had a dinner meeting with a vendor since I think this is the only place in Peoria Illinois which is great for business dinners. If you are in a steak house, you have to order one, so I had an aged 10 oz Rib eye with mashed sweet potato. The food was good, However of course living in the Bay area, nothing beats or compares even close to Harris. This resto is only underground, with fake windows that seems like you are looking out the window with a view. Service was just okay too. We had a waterboy who looked like he was 12! So, I only had the lunch buffet, so I can't really say whether the steak here is worthwhile, but I would skip the buffet if I would ever be back in town. I wandered around the courthouse area looking for something other than a bar or a sandwich shop for a while and found nothing. Maybe I should have headed further in the other direction? Even consulting Yelp on my phone didn't reveal many other choices and a Chinese restaurant that they claimed was right here just didn't exist. So, I figured how bad could a steakhouse be? First, being in a basement gives me pause. In Chicago, that's where the rats and bugs hit first, so you never want to eat in a below-ground restaurant. The lunch was $11.95 and really had limited options. There were two bowls of salad (regular and Caesar), some raw veggies, and some large chunks of pepper jack and cheddar cheese along with some rolls and crackers. Then for entrees they had chicken fajitas, prime rib (VERY well done) and a fish filet with panko (?) crumbs on top. There were over done green beans, some potatoes and a minestrone soup. For dessert there was pecan pie, caramel apple pie and some cookies and brownies. It was just past noon and already a lot of the trays were empty. It's not really the quantity, but the tasteless quality that makes me give this low marks. While dining options in downtown Peoria are absolutely abysmal, this restaurant stands out in so many aspects. They were full when I arrived without reservation, but they made space for me nonetheless and made me feel welcome. My server was a delight. The food is classic home cooking; I had a nice salad followed by a beef stroganoff that was very tasty and satisfying accompanied by a generous portion of fresh string beans cooked and seasoned to perfection, and nice warm potato rolls. I didn't have room for a desert, but got a complimentary chocolate covered strawberry which was delicious. The place itself is cozy, warm, and no loud music. The service and ambience is of a bygone era, with a midwestern charm and friendliness that is exceedingly hard to find. I'll make a point of coming back on my next visit. read more

After an all afternoon appointment at the hospital we were tired and hungry before starting our 2 hour drive back home. We saw that Jim's Steakhouse downtown was not too far away and decided to take a break, have a nice meal, before heading home. It was different than expected, but we were not disappointed! It was more upscale than we had anticipated but we felt very welcomed! The staff that waited on us (Josh and Al) were professional in service and made sure we enjoyed our meal. Our meal? My wife and I went here this evening for our second anniversary dinner. We've never been there before and she requested a steak. I did my research and you had the best reviews, which is what we aim for. I contacted you yesterday for reservations for two at 7pm. We arrived at 7:05 (the restaurant was slow at this point) and we were promptly greeted and sat. We were given menus and then began the big shift of all the tables. The entire wait staff started reorganizing all the tables around us. My wife and I were unable to discuss or really enjoy the restaurant because of the noise at the consistent level it was. You have no control over that. Here is what you do have some control of: seating, spacing, and taking notice of all your customers. There was not a foot of distance between me and the person seated at the table behind my wife and me. Granted you cannot control the size of the parties, but the atmosphere was poor and we were treated like our visit/money wasn't important. I imagine if you treat younger people like they don't matter, they're going to write reviews like this. We got an apology from our waiter who mentioned there was a convention in town, (he's the only reason you're not getting a one star). Nothing from a manager. We left without eating our food, so I'm sure it'll be just like a steak I bought/cooked myself from Alwan's. Unexceptional planning skills by the managing staff and those taking/making reservation plans. We may have been a party of only two, but that does not make us any less important than your convention clients coming in. Note: Do not use a convention being in town as an excuse. It's not a valid excuse when you are in downtown Peoria next to the Civic Center. I'm sure other Steakhouses wouldn't mind our business. read more

Excellent customer service, food was terrific-we felt underdressed as the place is old-time elegant; they had a wonderfully talented harpist playing. My wife and I went to Jim's for NYE. I got the filet mignon and she got the prime rib. Both were incredible. I also ordered a twice baked potato that deserves special mention. It may have been the largest potato I have ever seen. It was absolutely dripping melted cheese that was hiding bacon and chives underneath. It could have been a meal by itself. I was visiting my parents in Peoria, and they suggested we go to Jim's Steak House for dinner. When my brother & sisters were included, we made up a party of 11, and were seated in the "conference room," which was fine. Our orders were taken; drinks were distributed; the salads came out. They were extremely cafeteria-esque, being chopped lettuce, grated carrots, some sliced red cabbage, one grape tomato and an entire green onion on top. The vinaigrette I'd ordered was exceedingly sweet and the salad was literally swimming in it. When the entrées arrived, the waitress (in removing it from the trolley) dropped my mother's plate on the floor. This is an honest mistake: these things happen. But what happened next mystifies me. The waitress said she'd bring another entrée out so my mother could take it home in about 30 minutes and then proceeded to leave her without anything to eat. Let me repeat that: in a RESTAURANT, a business that serves food, the waitress made an error and then left the patron without anything to eat while everyone else had just been served. In what alternative universe is this considered acceptable?!? So using our bread plates, those of us at the table took pieces of our meals and gave it to my mother (who then had a meal and could eat with us). As I was eating my own meal, a bus boy came by and refilled water glasses as someone else started removing plates -- including my baked potato which I wasn't finished with. I was still eating -- still had filet mignon on my plate -- and they were removing my food while I was eating. The restaurant was not packed -- they didn't need to get rid of us so that they could turn the table and get more people in -- so this urgency to clear the table while we were eating was totally unnecessary. About the time we were ready to leave, the waitress emerged with a styrofoam take-away container wrapped in cellophane and gave it to my mother. The dropped meal -- and the fact the restaurant didn't simply provide a new entrée IMMEDIATELY was never dealt with -- they didn't even take the cost of the meal off the tab. Given there were 11 of us and each entrée averages $35, the bill total had to have been in excess of $450 once drinks were added. $450+ and my mother was handed the meal she'd ordered in styrofoam AS WE WERE LEAVING. I don't even know how to wrap my head around this "service" or why the manager didn't remove the cost of the meal. Yes, mistakes are made -- but this is so far beyond the pale that it defies rational explanation. Other Yelp reviews have said "overpriced" (yes), "unimpressed" (yes). To this list I'd add that the waitstaff is "clueless". This restaurant has no business pretending to be upscale and charging $35 - 55 per entrée and then treat the patrons as if they were an afterthought. Bad, bad, bad. read more

Had to stand there at the host stand for about 3-4 minutes before anyone even said hello. Wait staff is very young which is always a BAD sign. If you go to a nice steakhouse like Joes or Keefers in chicago, you will notice that the waitstaff is late twentys at the youngest. If it's a nice place, people do not leave those jobs since they are making some serious money, therefore an 18 year old or young inexperienced twenty something would never be able to get a wait job there. Waitress didn't know jack about wine, which is fine since I do. She filled the wine glass almost to the top. Clueless. She took my order before my wifes and also served me before my wife. I will say she was very friendly and trying hard. My wife ordered the halibut grilled and I ordered the bone in porterhouse chop. Wife thought the halibut was chewy. They undercooked my chop twice (medium) and so I ordered the beef stroganof (sp?). I don't recall that dish being filled with onions when I had it growing up, well it is at Jims. On a bright note, we had the greg norman cab/merlot. Ole greg does some pretty nice wines. Stay away from Jims and go to June on prospect which is absolutely the best place to eat in Peoria. Jim's Steakhouse Tucked into a basement in a very quiet Peoria downtown Jim's is what a steakhouse should be: dark, opulent, accommodating with attentive service, heavy bottomed cocktail glasses, long pours, a decent wine list and long listing of dry, aged cow on the menu. It's not hip or happening - hey, it's Peoria, kids. We didn't have reservations (It was a Monday) but the restaurant was nearly full around 8 p.m. when we arrived. The house salad was iceberg lettuce-based and forgettable but C liked his tomato-basil soup. Between the three of us we had the bone-in rib-eye, New York strip and my own medallions of Steak Diane. All were perfectly cooked to order and tasty. The boys had baked potatoes approximately the size of my head and I had a side of very good mushrooms. We split a couple bottles of Rodney Strong Cabernet. The dessert cart looked lovely - I talked C into sharing a piece of the strawberry cake with M so that I could cadge a bite and it was delicious.
