Fun times in Fremont district, one of the destinations for my cousin and her daughters, while visiting the area. Staff was informative and helpful, as I was curious about some of the vinyl records, I've collected, from my younger days (yes! I'm that old. Lol ) also from my parents, some great late sixties and early seventies music, and my sister(past) more late seventies and early eighties music. And sone recently gifted music from a sweet redhead. They informed me that, bringing in some of the rarities I've collected, they can help, evaluate it's worth. Lots of fun, reminiscing about the record stores of the seventies and eighties. This place is great if you are looking for records. Not only are the staff wearing masks, but they limit the number of people in the store. Their selection is actually really broad and a good mix of old and new stuff. The staff was both helpful and good about letting customers just browse their selection. When strolling down the street and you stumble upon a record store, you gotta check it out. The Jive Time store is small, but they have a decent selection, including some harder to find used records. But their prices are double silver platters for used records. I ended up buying 5 albums (used) for $120. Whoa! Still good to support small businesses, and I can't imagine the rent is cheap in Fremont. I did ask about an old Philly band from the 60s, the guy helped by looking through his inventory and offered to order a new reproduction. Quite nice and helpful staff. Street parking, good vibes, great music. I'd return, but only for albums that I couldn't find elsewhere locally. read more

Wow, what a rip off.. So I'm about ready to plunk down $15 for a used LP ( I know ridiculous ) but I was gonna. However I stopped for a second to check quality of vinyl just to justify my purchase. WTF it's a good thing I did because the vinyl wasn't even in the sleeve , it was something else. Now I thought these guys checked and cleaned up LP's before they put them out , wrong! Very helpful staff. The shop is setup well for distancing, as they only allow 4 people in the store at a time. I look my LP collection of 400 albums to sell. Then I saw them post on SM pics of albums on my list -- so I told them to disregard my request (or rather continue to disregard). Next, I reached out to Jive Time Records and they responded SAME DAY (May 13), processed payment (they'll do PayPal or take a card over the phone) and shipped the next day (they'll also do curbside p/up). Vinyl is alive and kicking here in Fremont! Jive Time is an awesome shop where you can find just about anything you might be looking for! A small storefront, but huge selection of everything from rock to blues; classical to jazz; folk to punk; and all in between. We stopped in here the other day with my sister-in-law and left with a bag full of LPs. So nice to have a place in town that offers such high quality records at reasonable prices. They have both new and used records here - but like I said, the quality is top notch - so even if it's not brand new, you're going to get something that is scratch-free and sounds great. Easily one of my new favorite shops in Seattle! Part of my de-cluttering included bringing my 3000+ 45-rpm collection to this store. Admittedly, most were not in pristine condition (from 50's - 70's, all played numerous time.) I left the boxes of records and was told they'd let me know about any payment, but it was understood that those they didn't deem saleable would be donated to a thrift shop; that was fine with me. This was Nov 2021. As of May 2022, not a word from them, although I did send an email in March asking for status. I am disappointed in this business. read more

Seattle is a great city for vinyl LP loving fools like me and Jive Time Records is one of my all-time favorite places to purchase said LPs! I usually make it a point to stop by at least once a week to see what cycles through their bins because they get a lot of stuff moving in and out of there. My usual routine when I visit is: go through the .99 cent bins, the $3 bin/4 for $10 bin, and then I go through the stacks to find the albums that are on my list. I know it is kind of a pain to go through the .99 cent bins, but I've found many cool late 60s/70s/80s albums there. Jive Time is worth a visit if you happen to be in the neighborhood and the people working there are super-friendly. One of my top spots for record shopping. The dudes who work and run this place are fairly knowledgeable about a variety of styles of music. No new music, but I usually look for original pressings on vinyl anyway (I know, how pretentious of me). Anyway, there are two listening stations in back and the new arrivals bin usually has a score or two. In the last couple of years here in Seattle, I've found some great, great records here. They have used CDs, Cassettes, and DVDs too. Various styles of music to suit just about anyone's tastes. Punk to Jazz, Classic Rock to Classical. Guaranteed finds here. read more

Some really great deals to be had in here. When I first came in, the used vinyl section seemed a little small. But then, as I walked around the rows, I realized it extended all over! My best find here: Cinerama's Disco Volante for $4!! This probably means nothing to most people, but I was so excited I insisted my girlfriend buy it (since I already bought it for much more online.) If you're visiting Seattle, Fremont might seem a bit further out. But it's worth taking a Zipcar over for the afternoon, exploring, and visiting this record shop. read more

Its hard to find a record stores in Seattle that has a good hip hop section. In fact, there isn't a store completely dedicated to the genre in the city. I think there was one that closed within the last few years. I heard Macklemore complain about it online. However, I'm not sure it was a good record store if he's cosigning it. No shots! I know how ya'll are defensive of Seattle's finest! I think the reason is because people like the idea of hip hop music more than they actually like it. I see it a lot with The Wu-Tang Clan. Ask anyone wearing a shirt of theirs what their favorite Wu album is...if they say anything other than Only Built for Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, or Ironman, chances are they only like ODB, and Shimmy Shimmy Ya...aka pseudo fans. Its probably smart not to have a shop dedicated only to hip hop too. There's a line in one of Jay's songs that pertains to things like this. My best friend from back home, and I used to say it every time a club opened that played only hip hop. "Grand opening, grand closing!" Anything solely related to hip hop doesn't stand a chance to last past a year. I know from deejaying in these spots, and owning a music store in the past. People just aren't willing to support said ventures...that, and the inevitable shoot out. With all that said, Jive Time has a decent hip hop section. I've been here a couple of times, and been surprised to find things not in normal Seattle record stores. Everyone has the repressing, but I found some newer limited edition pressings like Smiff-N-Wessuns first lp on double clear records from 2012. I also picked up most of Kanye's last 5 years of work as well, with the Pablo LP being the catch as it was only released overseas. Also copped Raekwon's aforementioned first LP on double purple vinyl from Get On Down Records. The section isn't very large, but it was thoughtfully purchased, and I'm always pleasantly surprised every time I visit. The rest of the record store has all the regular genre's, and its easy to go through the bins, and you're usually not shoulder to shoulder with people. The people working at the shop are cool, knowledgeable, and nice. I guess I don't get out to the record stores as frequently as I did in my younger days. Purchasing online is too easy, and you can find mostly anything on Discog, eBay, or the specialty websites. However, when I'm in Fremont I always make a pitstop to spend ten minutes thumbing through the hip hop section. Its one of the better ones in Seattle. Salute! read more

Oh how I love stopping by on my way to a random Fremont pub/tavern/eatery and seeing what they have in stock. I have found some fantastic records in the 99 cent bin, almost all in perfect condition. Sure the covers might be a bit worn, but I actually play my records and if they're all set in that department - I'm good. The location does have a good selection of classic rock and other genres, but I did wish they carried a bit more indie/alternative rock. Still a great little shop that will see my business whenever I'm in the area! Had a great conversation with the register man last time, were we chatted on about the origin's of Foreigner and where they went these past ten years. These guys just did something amazing that I would probably never see from another record store. I was visiting Seattle and wanted to check out some of their collection and got about 10 records including a used Madlib Invades Blue Note 2LP for a good deal. After coming back to San Franciso, I realized that I am missing one of the LPs of that record and gave them a call. They immediately sent me a sealed version of that record which is more expensive, paid the shipping (even though I told them I can cover it), and continuously apologized for this. I mean, I don't even know if I dropped that LP while checking out records but RJ, the guy I talked to, said "No worries man, we'll pay the shipping but let's do this... Next time you are in Seattle, just check out our store again". Even this conversation proves how friendly he is. Outside of that, I would definitely leave 5 stars to them even without this. Otherwise would not get that many records in the first place. I hope to be back soon! read more

Jive Time's abundance of 99 cent and 4-for-$10 bins might lead you to believe that their selection is clearance-sale spotty, but that would be a mistake. Not only will you probably find what you're looking for in the still- reasonably-priced organized-by-artist racks, but it's highly likely that you'll wind up finding what you're looking for in the 4-for-$10 bins. For their part, the 99 cent bins contain records that represent cheap answers to intriguing questions, such as "Are there other good songs besides 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' on Bonnie Tyler's 'Faster Than the Speed of Night?" Why not find out, right? [spoiler alert: the answer is YES!] Jive Time's got you covered, whether you just want to pick up a guilty-pleasure on a whim for under a buck, or find a classic album for less than it costs to add guacamole to your order at most Mexican restaurants these days. read more

I HAVE FOUND THE HOLY MECCA OF USED VINYL! This place has an AMAZING selection of used vinyl for DIRT CHEAP - it's impossible not to find a great deal here, and the owner is super nice. It's also pretty badical that they have a stuffed plush of Animal from the Muppets hanging out in the corner of the store. That's right, I said badical. That's right, it's Animal. And according to the owner, he's the official store mascot cuz his head resembles the store's logo. Sweet. read more

"Yes" is the answer. The question is, "Is this the best record store in Seattle proper?" This is where I go to get my vinyl fix. Jive Time has what is easily considered the best variety of music at the best prices. I easily spend an hour or more shuffling through the rows and rows of mint condition vinyl. I then spend another hour doing major damage to my back and knees shuffling through the rows and rows of records on the bottom floor-level shelf. Here's a hint: Use the step stool in the store as a seat. It will save your knees and back.. After I've browsed through the regular price, $3.00, and $.99 soul selections, I then pay and head across the street. Why? Because as if Jive Time wasn't already cool enough, they have another store Annexed across the street below the Starbucks. To access it, simply take the stairs down next to Starbucks and go into the antique shop. They have booth space in there. If you consider yourself a true vinyl lover, there is little doubt you will leave either location empty handed. They truly have the best selection around. read more

Jive Time is a record collector's store at base, although it's become a great way for people to frugally recollect old memories of their old ELP, ELO, Chicago, Queen, Billy Sqier, or Genesis LPs as well. The same goes for many forgotten and overlooked indie bands spanning the ages. Volcano Suns records for dollars? No problem. (The list goes on.) The prices on the rare records are not going to be cheap. That's the way the business goes. However, while career crate-diggers may scoff at the idea of buying a rare record for more than five dollars (which they'll happily admit to finding somewhere in a thrift store in Kansas, I bet. I can laugh because I was once that crate-digger), they're comparable or cheaper than places like eBay or Gemm. And the cruel trick is: the record is there. It could be gone the next day. I don't regret spending the dough on my original copies of, oh, Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" and Public Image Limited's "Metal Box" there -- especially in the context of just coming home from work and walking by and browsing. This is where you spend money but buy yourself a LOT of time to make up for it if you're a collector. read more

Friendly guy working behind the counter also very helpful in letting me know he has more "99 cent" LPs inside and even offered the small chair for my sore knees from squatting down. The store is exactly what I was looking for but MORE! Couldn't believe how much "$ .99" albums they had + massive 12" records including the imports in great condition just for a $1.00. It's not just the quantity but quality records all in a somewhat small record store. Great selection with great service from someone working at a record store isn't something I am/was used to and so I was highly happy to spend little over $160 something dollars just in my first visit all the way from Port Orchard, Washington. Will be heading this store again especially since there's another store right across the street that also sells whole bunch of records for .99 cents informed me by the helpful store clerk! Easily the best record store in Seattle. At least based on my very limited experience. Everything is used, which is my kind of record store. Though the store is pretty small they have a great selection from rock to international jazz and much more. Not only that but there are quality records in all of the bins. If I lived in Seattle I'd be here often. Especially after they put out new records. Definitely a store I will be back to the next time I visit Seattle. read more

In terms of selection and service, Jive Time gets 4-5 stars. They have a great selection and the employees are knowledgable and friendly. That said, in the past couple years their pricing has completely jumped the shark. Even taking into account the current vinyl boom, their pricing on new vinyl is routinely 30-40% higher than places like Easy Street, Sonic Boom or Everyday Music. If you want to pay $25-29 for a new record that you can buy at other (local) stores for $16-20, this is your place. Used vinyl is priced at a similar premium for anything that is 'cool' or popular. It bums me out to post this, as there are many great things about Jive Time, but until their pricing comes back down to earth I'll be taking my business to the many other good vinyl stores in town. read more

Oh, Jive Time. Where else can you find an entire album consisting solely of the Oscar Mayer Wiener theme in ten different genres? Four years ago, I wandered in here as an earbudded fourteen-year-old, and fell head over heels for vinyl. Whether you're looking for an obscure funk album or just want to fill in the gaps in your Zep collection, Jive Time is the Yoda of vintage records in Seattle: tiny, but unabashedly awesome. The prices are great and the selection quirky; it's one of those places where you might not find exactly what you're looking for, but you'll leave with three new albums you cannot possibly live without (and with spare cash to boot). At the risk of sounding like a broken record (forgive the horrendous pun), check the bargain bins! Forget diamonds in the rough--those babies are friggin' diamond mines, minus all the human rights violations. They might not be as pretty as their fully-priced counterparts, but 90% of the bargain albums still sound great, and they're a great way to check out unfamiliar artists or rediscover an old favorite without breaking the bank. Even though I am now living the glamorous life of a college student, I still try to pay them a visit every month or so (though now I'm trying to figure out how to make my turntable and vinyl collection fit into a teeny dorm room). My favorite find: two European-release U2 maxi-singles from the early '80s, back when Bono's hair meant business. read more

I was in the Fremont area doing touristy things aka visiting the infamous Fremont troll before heading to Paseo for some bomb ass Caribbean sandwiches. While we were just finishing taking pics with/on the troll, a couple came up holding shopping bags with what looked like vinyls inside. I asked them, "did you guys just come from a record shop?" (I was meaning to stop by a local one during my visit in Seattle, just never got to choosing which one) And yup they sure did, so my bf and I walked about 10 mins or less to Jive Time. The place is tiny (says the girl spoiled with Amoeba in Haight SF), but I'm sure if you really put a lot of time into digging there are a lot of gems in here! I was just browsing through their selections on a whim with nothing in particular to look for, but what I did spot when I first walked in was Frank Ocean's Channel Orange. Behind it was Nostalgia Ultra, which I have been tempted to buy before...and behind that was a vinyl by him titled, "unrealeased, Misc." I may be out of the loop, but I have never seen this anywhere else and didn't know it even existed! I had to swoop. I also picked up Interpol Turn on the Bright Lights. They were a little on the pricier side--both full albums were close to $30 each, but I felt like I couldn't leave empty handed! The worker was very chill and helpful as I checked out. I went into this joint while my lady was browsing books in the bookstore store. The sign in the storefront looks like it came straight outta the 70s, pretty cool. Even cooler was the collection of vinyl records in a wide variety of genres. There's a small section of used CDs and DVDs but the majority of the store is dedicated to racks of 33 records. I didn't buy anything since the last time I laid my hands on a record player was back in the 70s as a wee kid, but this is a great place for audiophiles who love old school vinyl. Price: Dart board pricing, some are really good deals while others are highway robbery for what they are and what you can buy for, especially when it comes to issue number. Customer Service: I didn't need their CS, self served. I was amused by their Nirvana selection that had a lot of rarities and bootlegs. Some made me smirk. read more

No matter how broke I am I always buy something when I walk in here. This place is so affordable and it has a great record playing machine so you can test out your records before you buy them. Plus they have all the cleaning supplies and other gifts. This is the one store I bring anyone from out of town to and each time they go crazy! Collectable vinyl in top condition might set you back more than what you normally might pay but paying a little extra reduces the amount of time you might waste hunting for it. I have been patronizing Jive Time for about 10-11 years, and have always had excellent experiences. It is tiny, but, the selection is exquisite, evidencing a keen music knowledge spanning all music varieties, and prices are very reasonable. Jive Time has many important things its far bigger local competition at Bop Street in Ballard does not have: Friendly ambiance; reasonable prices; fantastic bargain bins that contain excellent music, including the dollar bins; and, most importantly for a record store, a willingness to sell records, arguably the most important characteristic this David has to Bop Street's Goliath. read more
