I phoned in a order for a pick-up. I was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived 25 minutes later at business, my order was not even cooked. I was told the cook would cook it and it would be ready in a couple of minutes. I refused to wait for the order to be prepared when they hadn't even started cooking it. Why call in ahead for a pick-up to realized nothing had been done. The young man working the cash register was obnoxious when I told him I was upset because nothing had been done. When I moved to Forest Park last year. I was excited to see a JJ Fish & Chicken in the neighborhood. I've been here a few times and ordered chicken wings. Each visit is a hit or miss. Now they are charging an additional fee to use a credit/debit card. On this visit I ordered the five chicken wing special which came with a side of fries. I told the guy that I wanted salt and pepper on my chicken wings. I get home and ready to eat some tasty chicken. I was disappointed. My food lack flavor. No season what so ever. This is the third time this has happened. My fries tasted like they were fried in fish grease. Disgusting. I give up on this place and won't be coming back. ZERO Stars Never had any issues until tonight with absolutely horrible service with an unhinged worker (owner's son). My H asked for the food to be fried a little harder because it was raw on one side. The worker said he wouldn't do it and basically demanded to return his money, which was fine. My husband and I went to this JJ Fish location to purchase our lunch the other day and when we paid the cashier he gave us counterfeit money for our change. My husband demanded to speak to a manager and when the manager came out to speak to him the manager and the cashier had a smirk on their faces and told us that there was nothing that they can do. I called back and explained to them that the fish was bad & tasted rank and the person on the phone didn't have much to say other than than they can give me my money back for the remainder of the fish. Yet again, I have to crash the party and write an unhappy review about a fairly (!) well-reviewed place that seems out of context because most people who write reviews don't know what good food is supposed to taste like. In short: This is passable. In long: *The mild sauce wasn't tangy. (See my review on Frank's for more on mild sauce.) *I asked for a substitution (catfish nuggets in lieu of catfish steaks in a mixed dinner "platter") and the guy up front said "ok" then as I was getting confirmation from him about the portion size, he changed his mind. Bad customer service. He talked too fast, I couldn't understand him, he changed his mind. *The catfish was bland. (How does one do this you ask? I can't tell you how it happened because I don't work there, but in my experience, it's easy to blandify fish if you keep it for too long, and then soak it in hot water to wash the stank off.) *The perch tasted...unfresh. Not "bad", but if you've ever dealt with animal proteins, you know there's a spectrum. This wasn't at the "this could make you sick" stage, but it was at the "the raw fish had an odor before it was fried that the frying couldn't mask" stage. With a little effort, that can be addressed, but you have to be paying attention to the quality of the food to notice. *The "mashed potatoes" and "Gravy" were the wrong color. (I don't want yellow-ish gravy, sir.) *The rice didn't taste good. Overall, it was like they were going through the motions of running a good store, but without actually caring if the final product was any good. Or maybe they thought it was good, and my tastes are just too high. Still, I only stopped by this place because they were on the way home, and I took a chance. Stupid me. p.s. They offered to season my food with lemon pepper at the end, which was nice, but though I saw him dump it on, I still couldn't taste it. On second thought, the only reason I'm giving it two stars is because I'm feeling generous. J&J's is my local grease joint. Whenever I feel like I want some fried chicken or catfish this is where I go. If I'm entertaining for a football game, or something casual I'll order a pan of chicken from them. You can usually feed about 10 people for $30-40. Not bad as far as I'm concerned. They also offer baked goods like cookies and cakes that are pretty yummy as well. I would suggest the butter cookies, and caramel cake. I would also suggest getting the signature lemon pepper. If you cook at home it is actually a pretty yummy addition to chicken dishes. While I do love this place I would only suggest eating the chicken, catfish, perch or buffalo. Don't stray from those classics. If you do you're on your own. Everything else I've tried on that menu has been an epic fail. Including the hot dogs. I don't know how you ruin hotdogs. Short story: I checked on yelp to place an order for this location about 11:40 p.m and the app said the location was closing soon and to place my order for the next day. I have patronized this JJ fish location for twenty years, and through the pandemic!! The father and uncle, who actually rent this location are wonderful people. But, as a long time customer, I advise you not to never- ever leave your son in charge again!! I ordered by phone, on 12-27-22, when I got there my order was not my normal charge. I asked your son , why was my order not my normal total ? He stated, I ordered 8 wings.. I know my normal orders are 6 wings or a combo, ..which your son disputed, He became argumentative with me , and stated, "I never order wings ever!" Which is a lie . I asked him ,why does he have an attitude ? He then charged me for the sauce . And I said to him , your father or uncle never charge me for any sauce. The owner of this place brings to mind a few adjectives that wouldn't be appropriate for Yelp. I ordered catfish dinners complete with fries, sides and cake for my 3 employees and myself. The portions were more than enough. In fact, the white Styrofoam to-go boxes were overflowing with fish, chicken and fries. The final price was somewhere around $50. Everything was going great until I asked for sauce to go with the meal. This is when the owner handed me what I can only describe as 2 cups the size of thimbles. Okay, I'm exaggerating but have you ever been in a hospital where they give you pills in that really tiny plastic cup? That would be more accurate. So I asked if I could have some more sauce. You know, something appropriate to accommodate these 3 grocery bags full of food. He proceeds to ask for an additional $1 per 4 thimble sized containers. I thought he was joking. Unfortunately, he was dead serious. After some heated words, mostly from me, I threw a wad of singles across the counter towards him (that was incredibly rude of me and Owner if you're reading this I sincerely apologize) grabbed a handful of mini sauce cups and left. I should have turned around and walked out the minute I stepped foot in the door; the place looked cheap, shabby and dirty. The food was barely edible. I got fried perch which was OK but flavorless. The mashed potatoes were boxed and tasted just like a box. I think there was supposed to butter on the potatoes. I am basing this on the yellow colored layer on the top which didnt taste like butter. Nope, wheat I got was that veggie mix we ate as kids. You know, the one with the corn, pale green peas, and lima beans.... Which, by the way, tasted like it was probably laying around in the freezer since my childhood. To top it all off I found spaghetti spelled "spaghatti" and sword fish spelled "sowrd fish" on the menu...a printed menu board not some wipe off board. I occasionally stopped here on the way back to my Logan Square apartment to get fish on the way home from work. Located in a strip mall next to a Subway, hair salon and the yummy sushi house Fuji Grill, the various locations of J&J Fish serve up some pretty good fried fish. I've had the catfish filets, jack salmon and whitefish. All quite good if that's what you happen to crave. J&J is good for a "chain" in the fish department. But, it isn't mind-blowing lik Troja's, Chief O'Neill's or Duke of Perth. If you can't get to any of those Big 3, then J&J does the trick to satisfy....yes....you got it....the SICKNESS !!!!! I was aware of the quality of this restaurant so when I got there I was hoping for a different experience than my last visit. When I walked in, I checked the prices and realized that it is not the same experience of the JJ's on 17th Avenue in Maywood, IL. The prices are ridiculously high for what they offer. I ordered a Fish and Chicken combo and the price was $14.99. - 2 stars. The gentleman that took my order was pleasant but his response to my question about the high prices was a canned response, which was, "The economy is effecting the pricing boss!". - 2 stars The wait time for my food was about 12 minutes. - 4 stars. Parking wasn't bad and I was able to find a spot. There is a high apron that may scrap the front of your car as you enter the lot on one side. - 2 stars. The quality of the food was good, but not exceptional for the pricing for a greasy spoon restaurant. $14.99 for 2 pieces of boneless catfish, 3 chicken wings, 2 pieces of white bread, 2 teaspoons of coleslaw and scoop of cajun rice. The rice isn't cajun rice at all, as it's more mexican rice than cajun rice. - 2 stars. Overall, they do not deserve to carry the JJ fish name. Visit the Jj's on 9th Ave and Roosevelt in Maywood instead because this one is way below par. read more

This place wasn't bad, and at least it saved me from ridiculously slow service at the Madison/Harlem Wendy's that caused me to walk out. Was in a hurry to catch the last eastbound UP-West Metra train(due to the fact the Green Line was doing a shuttle bus between Laramie and Harlem for track work) AND was desperate to get something small to eat, so I didn't have time to wait on how really slow and disorganized(from what I could see, when I chose to walk out) that Wendy's was! So after walking out on Wendy's, I spotted J&J Fish, and decided to give them a chance. I always have infrequently seen J&J Fish in various places, but had never tried one till now. My verdict based on what I got(catfish sandwich, and didn't get anything additional) was that I'd put them above Long John Silver's, but not quite as good as say, Snappy's(near Irving/Damen) Fish Keg(Howard/Ridge), or the local chain Dock's on the south side(do any exist anymore, besides I think one location on 87th St? they used to be at Taste of Chicago every year and all over the south side, including one on 35th St.). At least the size of the sandwich wasn't bad, so I can't complain too much. Pricing isn't cheap, but that tends to be the case I notice at a lot of seafood and fish places. Honestly, you could do worse than going here. Like others said and my own view myself, it isn't the best seafood place, but it'll work in a pinch. A plus to J&J for being open late, since it seems like not too many places are open late if you want to eat in this area, except here, the unspeakable Wendy's where it goes to drive-thru only after like 11pm(and I wouldn't chance going to that location ever again), or Submarine Tender. read more
