He was able to brainstorm with us to help us imagine a completely new yard. He gave us ideas that we would either agree or disagree with. Once we had a general idea, Jeff was able to create a digital rendering of both our front and backyard so we were actually able to see his vision and know what we could expect the finished product to look like. For the early stages of the project Angel was the primary foreman of the job. Angel was very friendly and respectful. He would give us updates on what they would be doing for the next couple of days, or if they wouldn't be coming due to weather conditions. As a client this was great because we never had to wonder whether the contractors were coming or not. Our Project consisted of removing existing cement pavers and vegetation. And installation of new turf, irrigation system, and vinyl fence. JBL took care of hauling away all the old materials and bringing all the new materials/plants for our project. Jeff was more than fair to us and he worked with us to make sure we were satisfied with how it turned out. The area next to the steps and along the front of the house needed a retaining wall to hold the soil and clean up the slope. Their crew came out, walked the space with me, and explained how they would build the wall and shape the curve so it would look natural with the yard and the house. They also talked about the base and drainage so it would hold up long-term. The work itself was done efficiently and the crew was easy to work with. They prepped the base, set the blocks carefully, and made sure the curve of the wall flowed nicely along the front of the yard instead of just building a straight line. They kept the job site pretty clean and checked in along the way to make sure everything looked right. The finished wall looks great and really improves the front of the house. It's solid, level, and the curve gives the landscaping a much cleaner look than what was there before. Overall, a very positive experience. My contract started on January 17 2026 with a promise of 17 days from start of project to end of project. It is now September and my project is still not finished. To start, Shaun was to submit the package to Gentry Homeowners association to install synthetic grass at my home, but did not explain the details of the work on how it was to drain. The package was disapproved on February 9th. At that time I told Shaun not to do any work on my property (except the tree removal) until the homeowners association approved the work. So he did the tree removal and without approval from me or the homeowners association, dug up the grass in by backyard and attempted to level the area. Even though this was not to my liking at the time we still wanted the service to continue so I wrote and resubmitted the synthetic grass installation package to the homeowners association with a full explanation of service Design Build Landscape had promised me and also gave a copy of the letter to Shaun in good faith letting him know how to submit the package to the homeowners association in the future. Gentry Homeowners Association approved the work on March 23, 2026. I then told Shaun that we were approved to continue the work. Also by this time I had already paid Design Build Landscape about 20,000 of the 40,000 agreed to in the contract. As time went on, Shaun kept asking for things and money for my project and before I knew it I was purchasing items that Design Build Landscape should have been purchasing for this project along with giving Shaun other payments for his work. After reviewing my receipts and checks I see that I paid Design Build landscape over 38,000 of the 40,000 promised in the contract. Once I brought that to his attention and told hime that I would not pay him anymore until the project is completed the work also slowed to a crawl. When workers did show up it was mostly late arrivals and rushed work. Weeks went by with no-one showing up. Instead of making good on the work he began to make excuses like the weather, family issues etc. In short, when the money runs out so does he and you will not hear from him anymore because he ignores your text or has blocked your calls. His team left behind a lot of equipment and trash in my yard. Since hiring Design Build Landscape I have nothing but heart ache with his company. He might do other people right if it is a quick job like a patio or a driveway, but not any big jobs. Like I said early he talks a good game until the money runs out and so does he. The photos were taken on September 2nd 2026 and this is how he left my yard. I guess now that I will clean my own yard and get rid of his Junk. This appointment was scheduled weeks in advance. At 9:30 AM, I messaged Patrick to confirm that we were still meeting up. At 9:45 AM, he replied and stated that he was in Manoa (I live in Mililani). He went on to say that "he would try to stop by later that afternoon." At 5:00 PM, I had not heard from him, so I messaged him to ask if he was still planning to stop by. He told me that his truck had broken down. My response was "No problem," and I informed him that I was going to move on and find another contractor. He apologized and said that he would be in the Mililani area on the 25th (Saturday), so I gave him another chance. He came out, assessed the drainage issue, and later texted me his assessment. I responded with a few follow-up questions and asked him to send over the estimate, but I received no reply. On Monday the 27th, I messaged Patrick (again), repeated my questions, and asked if he could send over the estimate (again). He asked for my email address, which I sent right away, but I did not receive anything. The following morning, I followed up (last time) asking for the estimate, and once again, I did not receive a response. After I posted my review, Patrick emailed me and claimed that he had sent the estimate via email. I checked my inbox repeatedly and never received it. The only email I ever received from him came only after I left the review. He offered me a discount if I took my Yelp review down. That made me even less comfortable with the overall experience. I would have much preferred clear communication, timely follow-through, and the estimate I had been asking for. Overall, the issue was not just one missed appointment or one missed message. It was repeated poor communication, lack of professionalism, and no follow-through. This is not a company I would recommend.
