I'm not even sure how hiring this firm came to be, as there was another firm handling the probate case. There was a lot of confusion over this. Shady. This firm really dropped the ball, a bunch of times. They kept blaming the realtor. We lost the first buyer because of their mistake. They kept promising things but they really had no business making promises (they turned out to be empty promises). When it came to cut the checks, more mistakes were made. Throughout my representation from November 2024 to May 2025, I experienced repeated failures by JK Nelson including: 1. Incorrect and inconsistent billing, including being overcharged hourly rates for attorney Dan Allen without proper disclosure. Although Mr. Allen introduced himself to me as an associate attorney, I was billed at the senior attorney/partner rate of $400 per hour, instead of the $300/hour listed for associates in the signed retainer agreement. 2. Lack of transparency regarding fees, with initial cost estimates of $3,500-$5,000 being significantly exceeded without clear justification, causing financial hardship. Estimates fees ending up doubling, and projected to eventually triple. 3. JK Nelson and attorneys ignored emails and have very poor communication; several of my concerns about case management and billing were repeatedly unanswered or evaded. 4. JK Nelson do not have a document management system like most law firms. You have to rely solely on them to let you know what is going on with your case. With poor communication, it makes it a very impossible task. 5. Critical errors in case handling, such as incorrect hearing times communicated to me, a last-minute substitute lawyer appearing 25 minutes late to a hearing, and essential emails missing key recipients, violating the agreed terms. 6. Lack of notice or disclosure when Dan Allen, my primary attorney, left the firm, leaving me with no effective representation. I found out myself within 3 days of his departure. 7. Mismanagement of case documents, including errors in an Offer of Judgment that conflicted with my clear instructions, which I had to repeatedly correct. 8. Failure to timely respond or take responsibility for these issues despite multiple formal complaints on my part. 9. Emotional distress and financial strain caused by their unprofessional conduct and mismanagement, especially given the sensitive nature of family law proceedings. Due to these breaches of professional responsibility, I feel I have been neglected, misled, and financially exploited by JK Nelson and its attorneys I filed a complaint with the State Bar of Nevada, it was seriously that bad. I am waiting to hear back from them. I would never recommend JK Nelson to anybody, not even my enemies. I chose this firm only because they were listed as an in-network provider through my corporate legal plan. Over the course of two years (2024 and 2025), my experience has revealed a disturbing pattern of errors, broken promises, and complete disregard for professional responsibility. When I first created my trust in 2024, the process was sloppy and careless: my name was misspelled on official documents, and the trust was titled without consultation (they simply defaulted to my full name, backwards). These are not harmless mistakes -- errors like this in estate planning can create legal disputes, delays in probate, and risks to beneficiaries. At the time, I was dealing with family matters and let it go, but when I later followed up, the firm sent me a "hold letter" in September 2024 claiming they couldn't reach me -- despite my documented emails and calls. Rather than owning their mistakes, they deflected blame onto the client. In July 2025, I returned to request a simple trust amendment, and the dysfunction repeated itself. From July through late September, I emailed and called multiple times (August 12, August 22, and September 23). On September 23 I was assured my documents would be ready by September 25. What little communication I did receive was either evasive "word salad" emails that offered no clarity, or complete silence from the paralegal. Dealing with JK Nelson Law was one of the worst procedural experiences I endured following the death of my ex-husband, my daughter's father. Insurance through his work provided coverage for certain probate lawyers under their network, including this firm. Our initial call with Mr. Nelson, which was covered as a consultation under insurance, showed him to be kind and informative. Pleased by this, we informed the firm that we would be moving forward and explained how we were referred to them via the insurance company. Despite this, we were sent on a goose chase that lasted over three months. I was listed as the executor on his will. Thus we assumed I was covered to retain. JK Nelson Law set up a second consultation with an associate named Jillian Hardwick, which was also billed to the insurance company. This alone was nearly impossible as they repeatedly rejected consultation coverage from the insurance, requiring us to spend cumulative hours on the phone between the insurance and firm trying to resolve the disconnect. Once that was sorted, I phoned in to essentially fulfill this formality. Following the consultation, they sent a retainer agreement with the full cost attached. We reiterated that this was supposed to be covered by insurance. They tried to inform us that the consultation was covered but that I was not eligible to retain them under the insurance. Cue another several hours of back-and-forth between the insurance company and the firm. JK Nelson then told us that the sole beneficiary of the estate would be covered. Another consultation, billed to the insurance company, and another retainer agreement with full cost sent to us, despite us expressing multiple times that we came to them to be covered by insurance. One of our largest issues was that the firm seemed incapable of giving a straightforward answer, wasting our time and the insurance resources. Finally, the insurance company informed us that the other executor was the sole person who could receive full coverage. We were excited to finally get this process moving after months of unproductive interactions. When we called the firm back, the assistant, Amya, argued with me and told me we were still not covered. To her credit, she called back a few minutes later, admitted her fault, and apologized; but the interaction was still unprofessional. We set up a final consultation with Ms. Hardwick, who was dismissive and uninterested in sharing rudimentary information with the executor. Up to this point, we hadn't been impressed with Ms. Hardwick, but since this was a simple filing, we believed that it was best to stay as we had already invested so much time. However, in our fourth paid consultation over the span of three months, she stated that she didn't know if she could take on the case and would get back to us. Afterwards, she ghosted us entirely and refused to respond to any follow-up emails. We circled back to Mr. Nelson, who also refused to respond. The only reason we required probate services was because we suffered a death in the family. It's frustrating that they treated us with disregard, especially considering the situation that landed us on their doorstep. Not only did we have to deal with rude, unhelpful, and evasive staff, but we also had to navigate that while mourning a family member. This process made it exponentially more difficult to deal with his death as we felt we could never lay him to rest. To reiterate, we spent three months and billed the insurance company four times trying to finalize everything. We were beyond stressed during this process, and the time and effort taken to resolve these issues felt like a part-time job on top of the grief we were facing. After months and months of running in circles and trying to satisfy this firm's requirements, we were thrown back to square one without so much as a notification. I am frankly appalled at the disrespect shown by this firm in wasting our time and efforts, especially considering the vulnerable situation in which we came to them for guidance. read more

Retainer agreement signed 8/8/25. Called a few days later to find out if anything had been initiated on my case. I filled out the requested paperwork. My initial set of documents came back to me "legally incorrect" and the email said that my documents had been reviewed by an attorney. I made suggested edits and, by 9/4/25, I was no closer to having my estate planning documents signed and filed than I was on 8/8. My final emails and questions went unanswered. I had to finally call and fire this attorney. The retainer agreement states that you'll receive "top tier" service. I have a legal insurance plan and my case was an easy 7.5 hours of pay for the firm as my estate plan is about as basic as they come. Only when I called to fire the firm did Mr Nelson ask to speak with me personally. There's a reason why this firm has a "customer retention" position staffed. I've zero clue on the inner workings of any law office, but this one seems like they're under-staffed and overworked and no one is really getting any priority. It's worth saying again: the documents initially returned to me as my estate plan were legally incorrect AND reviewed by a licensed Nevada attorney. Be careful here. EDIT: moments after this review posted, this attorney called and woke my family up at almost 9pm on a school night. After I had already answered "no" when he asked to speak to me earlier. The lack of boundaries is a red flag for sure. It's amazing how much they reach out once they get fired but how they can't be bothered to talk with you about your case while you're a client. Second edit: Mr Nelson's reply here isn't 100% truthful! I have the email with the all of documents attached. These documents, the email stated, were reviewed by an attorney and were in fact, 100% not legally accurate for what a trust needs to be. No NV court would've allowed my spouse to be listed as she was and my trust would've been invalidated or left open to dispute or otherwise had I not caught this gross error! I also didn't state I would hang up. I was asked if I would speak with Mr. Nelson and I simply said "no" and that I just wanted my money back. Look at all the attention Mr. Nelson gives me after he got fired for what I perceived to be his inattention, incompetence, and unwillingness to complete my case! If I could give negative stars, I would. Working with JK Nelson and attorney Dan Allen has been one of the most traumatizing, financially, and emotionally devastating experiences of my life. I was referred to this firm through MetLife Legal, who promoted them as a top-tier law service. That could not be further from the truth. Dan Allen completely mishandled my case. To make matters worse, during court appearances, Dan Allen was clearly unprepared and unable to articulate even basic responses to the judge or opposing counsel. It was beyond unprofessional--it was embarrassing and damaging. I watched him struggle to form coherent sentences, which left me exposed and unsupported in front of the court. This is not the competence you expect from an attorney--it was negligence at best, malpractice at worst. Their billing practices are deeply questionable, and their so-called "support" is nothing more than a money grab. Dan Allen at JK Nelson Law completely failed me during a critical time. He gave opposing counsel a two-month extension without my knowledge or consent, failed to communicate important updates, and showed up in court completely unprepared. His lack of professionalism directly impacted the outcome of my case and allowed my ex-husband, Derek C, to manipulate the legal process and delay accountability. Derek C, an MFT intern, has used the family court system to continue controlling and harming me financially and emotionally. Dan Allen's negligence didn't just affect me--it empowered the wrong people. This law firm does not protect vulnerable clients; they enable injustice. Their actions directly benefited my ex-husband--a man already in a position of privilege--while leaving me completely unsupported. It's no surprise to see other reviews describing the same unethical behavior. Sadly MetLife Legal continues to recommend this firm, despite clear evidence of repeated terrible service for clients. I called this office as I had a good experience with Mr. Nelson being able to help me in the past, but it could have been because he was directly above my office and was trying to get business from me. I did refer a lot of business to him which now I regret. I had a co-worker tell me that she had a ton of issues with her trust getting done, which I did not believe as I had a pretty descent experience having my trust done through Hyatt Legal. Fast Forward to 2021 and we are no longer located at the same office building. I filed a claim with Metlife Legal as I have done in the past as I had a post divorce question regarding a hearing I have coming up in a few days. I let the representative know that I needed to speak to Mr. Nelson quickly as it was a matter of if I needed to file evidence or not and just needed advise. She said she would take my question and get back to me. I got no call back. I called the next morning early at 9am and told the representative that it was imperative that I speak to Mr. Nelson today and if he was not available to let me know as soon as possible so I can locate another attorney. I am not unreasonable and I understand attorneys get busy. I get a callback at 5:15pm today, which is now 2 days and gives me zero time to locate another attorney on a FRIDAY. The representative tells me that he is not able to give me advice as there is a conflict of interest. Sounds like a huge Cop Out to me! What conflict of interest? Oh they cannot tell me due to Hippa Laws. Well, as you can see the law office gave me advise in 2018 and nothing has changed! DO NOT use this law firm, specifically Dan Allen. He completely gouged my husband and I in his custody case. There was AT LEAST 10 unanswered emails/phone calls from him and his paralegal Rhett. We would go weeks without getting a status update and when we would request one, no answer. We had an appointment set up with him and he wasn't even in the office that day, ended up having to be through the phone. Dan is on suspension with the bar currently and it doesn't seem like anyone is monitoring him. He's obviously suspended for a reason. He recommended a motion that we didn't need. Quoted us $1500 but it cost us over $2000. Total we gave this guy $6500, this amount DID NOT even get us to our CMC. Once we fired him through email, received a phone call IMMEDIATELY?!?
