I ordered 1/2 lb of jerky for pickup and received an email saying my order was ready at the restaurant location. When I arrived, the employee told me the jerky was actually stored at another location and she didn't have a key to access it. I then called the number listed on their website, and the lady who answered told me they would just ship the order instead. Fast forward 14 days later no package, no updates, and no communication at all. I had to call them again, and the same lady told me to call the pickup location myself to see if my order was there. I explained that this should have been handled on their end and asked her to contact the store and let me know whether my order was available for pickup. She agreed, asked me to text her my name and number, and said she would call me back. It's now been another day with no response. This has been one of the worst customer service experiences I've had poor communication, disorganization, and zero follow-up. Very disappointing. read more

Customer service and operating hours are unacceptable. I have visited multiple times, and the storefront has remained closed. The business continues to claim the closure is temporary, but it has been well over a year. At this point, it should be communicated honestly as permanent. The only sign posted is sun-faded, and the website directs customers to Spicy Lao Kitchen, which also provides poor customer service and lists inaccurate operating hours. For weeks, they have displayed a notice stating they are closed due to kitchen issues and to return the following day. I have done so repeatedly, only to find the same sign still posted. Picking up online orders is equally frustrating. Customers receive a text notification that the order is ready, but when arriving, staff often have no idea where the order is. On my most recent visit, I waited in the parking lot for over an hour before the issue was resolved. Their jerky is excellent, but the effort required to obtain it makes it not worth the trouble. Running a business comes with challenges, but when the same issues continue for months and years, it is time to restructure. Excuses involving staffing, shipments, or transitions do not explain away the pattern that customers are repeatedly experiencing. I sincerely hope the business resolves these problems. When I first heard about JL Jerkys, I was like wow... an entire store dedicated to jerky products. It took several visits before I was able to walk inside because as some other reviewers have experienced, the business doesn't always adhere to its operating hours. On one occasion, the door was locked at 6:15 despite the stated closing time of 7 pm. I returned on a random weekday mid-afternoon only to see a posted note saying the staff was going to be away for the next hour. The suite was located in the Kearny Villa Square which has several popular eateries. Parking can be bad if you arrive during peak meal hours. The inside was stocked as a food merchandise vendor. There were many dry goods on display besides jerky. A sheet at the service counter showed the thirteen available jerky flavors that were divided from the least spicy at the top to the most spicy on the bottom. I didn't see a price list, but that could be obtained from reading other reviews. In addition to choosing the level of spiciness, I liked how they offered a jerky range of lean to extra fat to a mix of both. I picked a mixed ratio of the Sweet Garlic in a large pouch ($20). It was listed as zero spicy on the scale which was perfectly fine as it allowed me to appreciate the garlic flavor. I thought I walked into the wrong place at first. It's a mini market with snacks, rice, condiments, candy and clothes. I was expecting aisles of jerky but only a few shelves had it pre-packaged. They are the same owners as Spicy Lao Kitchen in the same plaza so you'll see some packaging from them. They offer 13 jerky flavors that ranges by spice level. Popular flavors are garlic lover and Pineapple xpress. You order at the counter and it gets packaged in the back. Choice of lean or extra fat. We got large lean sweet and spicy which is level 4. There are 4 size options: $13 small - 3.6 ounce $20 large - 5.4 ounce $30 1/2 pound - 8 ounce $55 1 pound - 16 ounce Sweet and spicy lean was a super thin crisp jerky like a chip. I heard such great things about this place and also love jerky so much that I had to check them out. Besides beef jerky, they also carry other snacks, but all I wanted was the beef! I got the small bags of lemongrass, lemon pepper, peppercorn flavors. They are only $5 on Friday's, which are the perfect size to try out all the interesting flavors they have. They also have different levels of fat for the jerky, but i realized I like it lean. All three of the flavors were yummy, but my favorite was probably the lemongrass. Pricy but it's jerky. I've never had jerky in these flavors or textures which makes this a one of a kind place for me. It's not tough like Kirkland jerky, but you may get a few pieces that are a bit too dry to chew on. The best pieces are the ones that are still tender. My favorite is the Sweet Garlic extra fat. I love the extra fat because it gives this savory burst that I didn't know jerky could have. If you love the fat cap on a rib eye you can't go wrong with this. I was visiting a neighboring restaurant and decided to pop in while my order was being prepared. There were quite a few flavors of jerky to choose from and I ended up picking up one bag (Pineapple Express) after one of the owners told me it was a best seller. I got back to work and I have to say I enjoyed my jerky more than my lunch. First off, what really separates this jerky from others is how thinly sliced it is. Due to the thin sliced pieces, you feel like you get more for the same weight. This is a good thing, because this jerky is not cheap. The second thing that separates the jerky is that there are different options for fat content. You can choose lean jerky or xtra fatty. I wasn't sure about the fatty since most other jerky it's very hard to eat the fat. On my next visit I bought the medium, sweet garlic and garlic. They didn't have any of the garlic out but I asked the owner about it since I don't always love super sweet jerky. She kindly went to the back and made a bag for me. She asked me if I wanted fatty or lean and I was honest and said I didn't know. So she gave me pieces of both. When I got home I ripped open all three bags. All of them were fantastic but the garlic and the medium are now my favorites. I was so glad she gave me some of the fatty, it is amazing. The fat melts in your mouth, unlike any other jerky I've had before. This is my new go-to jerky spot. BTW if you are sensitive to spice levels, be careful, even the mild has a good kick! JL Jerkys is a little family-owned shop in a business plaza in Clairemont/Kearny Mesa that mainly sells Lao-style jerky as well as some other goods. They sell the jerky in both mini and larger packs (sorry, I forgot the actual measurements), but you can also make custom orders if you want a larger order. They sell a variety of flavors, most of which I believe are on the spicier end. I bought two bags with Lemon Pepper and Lemongrass flavors. Both were seasoned very well and the jerky had a drier consistency but in a good way. I will also note that for the flavors that I purchased, the jerky was on the fattier end (I personally loved it, but know that fattier jerky is not for everyone). The owner was very nice and struck up some polite conversation. I was going to do a day trip to San Diego so decided to do a pick up this time. A couple days my day trip, I sent a message via instagram to confirm if I would be able to pick it up on that day. I received confirmation that I would be able to. The day before San Diego trip, I see a post on their instagram that their sister restaurant will be closed for the weekend, but order pick ups will still be available and to contact the phone number provided. Upon seeing that post, I immediately sent a text to that number inquiring if I would still be able to pick it up. I did not get a response. I get to San Diego, and decided to stop by around 12:30PM. As expected the restaurant is closed. I reached out to them via text and call and no response so I left the plaza. I got a response an hour later saying to let them know when I am here. Since I was already away from the area, I decided to come back a bit later. I gave them a heads up with my ETA and arrived when I said I would. Still no one there. I sent another text and did not get a response until 15 minutes later. Again I had left the plaza as I am not going to waste day waiting in a parking lot. In the response, I was told that I was suppose to pick up my order at the JL Jerky store and not the Spicy Lao Kitchen. There is no indication anywhere from them or on their website or instagram page that the pick up will be at the JL Jerky store. All information says to pick up at Spicy Lao Kitchen as the JL Jerky store is temporarily closed. I informed them that I will return again at 5:00 PM. They did not confirm or acknowledge this. If this was not a reasonable request, I expected them to at least inform me that I wouldn't be able to do that, but again I am left without a response. I came back at 5:00PM again and again no one at either the JL Jerky store or the Spicy Lao Kitchen. I sent them another text and still no response. It's been 4 hours since, and I still have not received a response back and I still don't have my order. I understand that things come up and there may be some unforeseen issues, but the lack of communication and customer service is what bothers me the most. read more

I got my order 3 weeks later (which I understood because the website said it would take up to 3 weeks.) It's a mix of sweet and savory thin slices of jerky with an abundance of umami flavoring. Personally I like the medium & lemongrass flavors. Lemongrass has a nice subtle hint of the herb and has a mild spice kick I wasn't expecting. It's pretty good. My husband and brother loves the regular Medium spice which gives you just a bit of the fat on the slices that is also marinated and almost melts in your mouth! I'll stick with my lean versions. What really separates it from other brands is the cut of meat. As opposed to most companies that opt for extremely lean pieces of beef they chose a cut that has strips of fat dispersed throughout. As much as I hate using this phrase the fat really does melt in your mouth. You even have the option to purchase a bag with much more fat in it than normal. The one flavor that I tried had a good amount of heat and garlic flavor to it. I can't wait to try all the other flavors! Ordering at the moment is strictly online and they do ship worldwide. I usually don't care for store bought jerky (from Von's, etc.) so I prefer the local jerky shops. This is by far my favorite place because of how juicy and tender the meat is on top of the great flavor. My favorite: Pineapple Express Regular This flavor is both spicy and sweet, these definitely pack some heat so if you don't do spicy, you may want to try another flavor. I prefer the regular cut because there is already plenty of fat that is included with each piece. I have also tried the extra fatty flavors and they were also great but I just would have preferred a little less fat. The jerky is pretty thin but I think that improves the texture of the jerky. Other flavors I recommend; Sweet and spicy: Similar to Pineapple Express but less of a fruity flavor. My second favorite. Mild: If you can't handle spice Lemon Pepper: If you like a little salty and tangy flavor with your jerky. I loved this one as well. This place is a little hidden gem! The place is a little out of the way in Kearny Mesa and the storefront needs a little work. It is set up like a convenience store, but with only limited stock. What is the true reason for this place, the true star of the show is their jerky!! I have literally spent a small fortune coming back to this store just for jerky. Their thin cut, but generous slices of Asian style (Lao) jerky is a bit addictive but so worth the money. Seeet and spicy is my favorite, but happily I also get medium, mango tajin, lemon pepper and took a small habanero to try... talk about enjoying every painful bite! I have been trying to think of the best way to word this review but I'm at a total loss. I'll just give you the low-down. A co-worker of mine recently introduced me to JL Jerkys and frankly, I just wasn't aware that jerky could be this good. The spicy habanero, and the sweet and spicy are almost luxurious... the brisket they cut the meat from is deliciously fatty (they have x-tra fat, regular, and lean cuts but the fatty and regular are the best). The glaze they use on the two jerkys above is sticky and slightly crispy (crispy? Is that the best word?) and so good, once you have a bite, you're going to have trouble stopping. These two are spicy so if you're not into that, perhaps ask them for a less spicy option, but if you don't mind spice, then they're really enjoyable. I understand there are a few places throughout the county that sell some bags, but I just go to the source. I think it's a little less expensive if you buy from their Kearney Mesa location. You can also order on-line but I haven't tried that option yet. I kinda think this is an undiscovered gem in San Diego...? Go try it now before more people discover it and you're not able to get your hands on any. read more

I've never liked fatty pieces, but I really only order extra fat. The fat literally melts in your mouth, it's SO good and I love it. Very good beef jerky and snacks. Good customer service as well. I was in the area and happen to spot this store, very good choice for snacks for sure. My suggestion to the store owner would be to do an inventory and toss out the expired items and always give the customers a copy of the itemize items so they know what they bought. The reason for this review is to help them better their store, no bad intentions. Would I return, probably but not anytime soon. read more
