Always such a treat! For the last few years I've enjoyed dining here while visiting for an annual trip with family and friends. This place has quickly become a "must have" when we visit and each time has been such a wonderful experience. We try different things each time and have not yet been disappointed. I'd like to give a special shout out to our server, Scott, who has always provided exceptional service and elevated our personalized experience each time. I would highly recommend the steak flight, dirty hashbrowns, and the carrot cake! We had a slight issue one time, however it did not detract from our experience and was more than made up for. We've sat downstairs in the restaurant which offers a beautiful interior and a more intimate experience, as well as upstairs in their beautiful al fresco seating area which provides a beautiful city view and sea breeze and is for sure our preferred seating for our dining experience. We came in a couple weeks ago and everything was absolutely amazing! I loved that it was so elegant feeling, with a beautiful atmosphere filled with soft lighting, but also still so lively/fun, and with good music playing. The food and the service were equally outstanding. I really enjoyed all of the entertaining table side menu items they had available to order. Another thing that is always a really big nod to us of great service, is when they treat our kids just as well as us adults. They greeted them, spoke to them, and even ended up creating two mocktails from their personal preferences. We really appreciate that so much! We ended up ordering a variety of things to try for our family of four: the table side Caesar salad, the Steak Sampler, a Filet, Lobster, Mashed Potatoes, Mac and Cheese, and Truffle Fries - we loved it all! Perfectly cooked and everything we wanted it to be! We were so full, but after viewing the dessert cart all night, we had to try some! The most decadent, delicious, chocolate, layered cake was our pick. As we were waiting tho, we saw the table side banana foster dessert being made and had to order that too! No regrets!! My partner and I had a 7 pm reservation and arrived about five minutes early, but we still had to wait around 20 minutes to be seated. What made it a little confusing was that once we were seated, the section had multiple open tables already available. Fortunately, the night improved from there. The restaurant is pretty dimly lit, so keep that in mind, but it creates a relaxing atmosphere. The music was also something you wouldn't typically expect from a steakhouse, and I actually appreciated that since it matched the vibe of the restaurant well. We started with the "tableside" Caesar, which, unfortunately, was not prepared tableside, but it was still good. For our mains, we both ordered the NY strip, and both steaks were cooked perfectly. To go alongside them, we ordered the broccolini, dirty hash browns, and truffle fries. All of the sides were solid, but the dirty hash browns were definitely my favorite of the three. I brought my parents here to give this steakhouse a try. Overall I don't think our experience was bad, but the food is also a bit overhyped. For appetizers, we ordered the bread with sea salt, charcuterie tower, and shrimp toast. The shrimp toast was overly salty and was pretty disappointing. I enjoyed the bread, but my dad thought that the bread was a bit too salty as well. The charcuterie tower was a hit and came with A LOT of food already. Looking back, I think just ordering the charcuterie tower by itself should be good enough for appetizers. I also ordered farmer's market fruit salad. It was okay. Unfortunately there was way too much arugula and the bitterness overwhelmed whatever other flavors that was part of the salad. Again, very average experience and not justified by the high price. For the actual entree, I ordered a bone-in dry aged rib eye, my dad ordered the petit filet NY strip, and my mom had catch of the day, which happened to be the sea bass for $38. I didn't think my rib eye was bad, but it wasn't overly amazing either. The NY strip was awesome and wish I had ordered that instead. The sea bass was also cooked to perfection. Sadly, seems like my main dish was the only one that was off. For the side dishes, I do highly recommend the potato puree. The roasted mushroom is again, overly salted. For dessert, we ordered coffee and a tiramisu cheesecake. Amazing amazing cheesecake and excellent coffee. When I asked where the coffee was from, the server actually gave us a free bag of coffee beans since they actually don't sell the coffee at the roaster, so I really appreciated this gesture. Overall, I think the quality of the food here is somewhat inconsistent. Some dishes we had were great and others were off. But the excellent service here (and the fact they gave us free bag of coffee) warrants an extra star, which is why I'm giving this place a 4/5. Would I come back to this place again though? We kicked things off with dirty martinis, which were delicious but poured a little light. For starters, we tried the Petite King Crab with bonito mayo and chive oil, and the Caesar salad. The king crab had a slightly fishy edge, though the lemon gelée did a nice job cutting through it. The Caesar was fine, visually striking with the whole lettuce leaves, but honestly I'd prefer it chopped. The trend feels more aesthetic than practical. For mains, we split the NYC strip and the ribeye. Both were cooked well and enjoyable, but neither hit that "wow" moment you hope for at a steakhouse of this caliber. The real showstopper? The Dirty Hashbrowns with trout roe and crème fraîche. Absolutely unhinged in the best way, fun, decadent, different, and completely stole the show. Best pork chop I have had in my life!!!! Bone in Pork Chop done to a true medium rare. Most places don't offer and a lot of people scared of undercooked pork but there's nothing else like it. If you do it with high quality pork and a place that knows what they're doing. Bone In Ribeye was amazing as well. Cooked perfectly. Horseradish sauce was good but I would prefer it a bit more spicy. They had a bone in New York which you don't see too often so would try next time. Dirty hash is def worth it. Brocollini really good as well. We Ordered some starters/sides. The aged meatball, Mac & cheese, mushrooms, broccolini and baked potato. And for main the dish my mother ordered the ribeye and I the chicken. The aged meatball was insanely rich and delicious!! I couldn't get enough of it and made me tear up from how good it was. The mushrooms looked like charcoal and were tasteless. The broccolini looked withered and was also tasteless. Baked potato was cold and burnt and the Mack and cheese had no flavor either. Mind you our main dishes were taking long to arrive even our wonderful server noticed and commented on it. After a short delay my mom's steak arrived, it was reminiscent of the first time I ever cooked steak. Charred and burnt. My chicken was rubbery and disgustingly over salted. It almost stopped my heart slaty. I was so disappointed as we had such high hopes to enjoy a delicious steak for my mom's sake. As previously mentioned, the server was wonderful. Very apologetic and understanding. She spoke to her manager and the manager came right over. Tried Born & Raised for my first Michelin-star experience, and overall it was such a good time. We had a reservation and were seated inside, but unfortunately our table was right where there was a sun glare. I did ask if we could move, and they said everything was booked, but no one ended up being seated next to us the entire time, which was a little disappointing... That being said, the food definitely lived up to the experience. We shared the tomahawk steak and it was cooked to perfection, sooo good. I also tried the beef tartare for the first time and loved it, such a fun new experience, the extra potato chips were the perfect touch. The sides are à la carte and everything we tried was amazing, but the potatoes were my favorite. And not to mention the layered carrot cake... if I could come back just for that, I would. Here is the reason for the missing stars. My husband ordered the rib eye. Medium rare as well with a side of broccolini. His steak was ok but was lacking tenderness which seems like it was more medium than anything. We believe it was probably just lacking tenderness. For the price of the ribeye, we expected a much better steak. The bread was dry and not tasty at all. You can spread the butter on it but it doesn't do much. If I could give no stars I would.... I celebrated my 45th birthday on Friday, July 17, and I had been looking forward to visiting Born & Raised for the very first time. I don't frequent San Diego, so this was a special occasion for me. I was excited that they were able to accommodate my 8:30 p.m. reservation. In fact, it meant so much to me that I even canceled our sunset cruise so we could enjoy dinner there. We arrived on time and were immediately impressed by the beautiful ambiance. I asked one of the hostesses if it would be possible to be seated on the rooftop because of the beautiful lights everyone raves about. She told me there was a waitlist but promised she would continue checking since it was my birthday. Unfortunately, that's where the experience began to decline. Our waitress greeted us initially, but as the evening went on, we noticed we were receiving very little attention. She only had three tables, all within our view, yet she consistently attended to the other two parties while we were largely ignored. After we finished eating, we sat for over 30 minutes without anyone checking on us or acknowledging that we were ready for our check. To make matters worse, a photographer came through our section taking photos of every table except ours. While that may have been unintentional, combined with everything else that happened, it added to the feeling that we simply didn't matter. Eventually, we asked a concierge to locate our waitress so we could get our check. Fifteen minutes passed, and still no one came. I finally got up myself and walked to the hostess stand to ask for assistance. Only then did a manager come over. I explained how disappointed I was with the service. She apologized and offered complimentary desserts and cocktails, but at that point I had no desire to extend my stay. The issue was never about free food or drinks, it was about how unwelcome we had been made to feel. As a Black woman, that feeling is heartbreaking because you never want to wonder whether you're being treated differently. I can't say with certainty what motivated the treatment we received, but the consistent lack of attention, being overlooked while others around us were served, and how invisible we felt left me questioning whether we truly belonged there. The manager ultimately comped our entire meal, and while I appreciated her taking responsibility financially, no amount of money could erase what should have been a joyful birthday memory. The waitress never returned to our table after the manager became involved. As we left, several staff members stood at the host stand watching us. The manager had promised to bring me her business card but never did. Instead, she simply watched us walk out. I had anticipated an unforgettable birthday dinner for all the right reasons. Instead, it became unforgettable for all the wrong ones. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Born & Raised. Every guest should feel welcomed, valued, and treated with the same level of care and respect. Second time at Born and Raised this time for girls night. We absolutely enjoyed the fruit salad that has now become my favorite. Service was good always checking on us but not pressuring. This place is very trendy and the upstairs seating area is gorgeous with a view. Definitely will be back again as it's a great experience each time. read more

My brother‑in‑law was in town and said he needed an amazing steak. Say less -- we knew exactly where to take him. Born & Raised is our go‑to spot for steak lovers and out‑of‑towners. In my opinion, it's a true San Diego staple. It sits right in beautiful Little Italy. The rooftop has a great view of the San Diego cityscape -- it really shows off how gorgeous this city is. The service and attention to detail are next level. Every fixture is custom and intentional -- exactly what you expect from a Consortium restaurant -- but this one is easily one of my favorites. We ordered the bread, the tableside Caesar, a steak sampler, the ribeye and a few sides to share. Everything was incredible. The bread was warm, flaky, and buttery. The steak sampler was a fun way to try a few cuts, but the dry‑aged steak was the standout for me. The sides rounded out the meal perfectly. We each had a couple of cocktails, all beautifully crafted. Yes, it's on the pricier side, but the experience is absolutely worth it -- especially if you want something memorable and uniquely San Diego. read more

I found Born & Raised to be good, not great. It's hard when you're paying that much for a steak and experience- you really expect it to be amazing. The space itself feels very art deco, it's beautiful. I had a peak at the rooftop as well when I went to the bathroom and was really blown away by the view up there. Super nice! I shared a salad and shrimp dish with my husband, both were good and then I ordered the petite filet with the mashed potatoes. Inside is super nice and done up very well. All the employees were very friendly, food came out quick considering how busy they were. We did have to wait about 25 min past our reservation time to be seated. Great views of downtown from their 2nd floor seating. The dirty hash browns were good, Mac n cheese had good flavor and wasn't overcooked, the smash burger was also very good. Quality ingredients all around. The bone in ribeye was $79. Not necessarily overpriced but definitely not a good value. Especially the smash burger for $30. It isn't anything that you can't cook at home and make just as good for half the price, but you're paying for the ambiance, service, views of downtown, and the experience. This place is located in the heart of Little Italy in San Diego, which means the parking will be a nightmare. There are places that do offer valet parking but you're looking to pay at least $40-$50. Tips on parking is I just get a cheap parking on SpotHero app ahead of time and you'll only have to pay maybe eight to $10 for the whole day. This place is where you would have to make a reservation at least a month ahead if you want a specific date and time that you want to go. They have downstairs upstairs and a rooftop area. The vibe and the decoration from upstairs and downstairs is very different. The upstairs vibe is more casual and downstairs is more intimate. Unfortunately, this time when I've got their spicy margarita, it was so bad that I actually had to take it back. Which is rare.. how can you screw up Margarita?? Besides the drink, food we have gotten here were phenomenal. This is one of the best filet mignon that I've ever had. And that is saying a lot. I do think that their side dishes were mediocre nothing special, but their steak was on point. I would say the price wasn't outrageous compared to other steak places.
