What made it a little confusing was that once we were seated, the section had multiple open tables already available. Fortunately, the night improved from there. The restaurant is pretty dimly lit, so keep that in mind, but it creates a relaxing atmosphere. The music was also something you wouldn't typically expect from a steakhouse, and I actually appreciated that since it matched the vibe of the restaurant well. We started with the "tableside" Caesar, which, unfortunately, was not prepared tableside, but it was still good. For our mains, we both ordered the NY strip, and both steaks were cooked perfectly. This is my second time here and first time with my wife as our celebratory dinner for getting married on the 22nd. The meat was so tender. The presentation was perfect. It was more than enough for us both. Medium rare and melts in your mouth! We also ordered a side of potato purée. Here is the reason for the missing stars. My husband ordered the rib eye. Medium rare as well with a side of broccolini. His steak was ok but was lacking tenderness which seems like it was more medium than anything. We believe it was probably just lacking tenderness. For the price of the ribeye, we expected a much better steak. The bread was dry and not tasty at all. You can spread the butter on it but it doesn't do much. Our dinner ended with a complimentary macaroon. It was cute with a single candle to blow out. I would definitely recommend this steakhouse to others. I think we actually laughed out loud at how delicious it was. We got a side of Mac and cheese too which was delicious . As a total Mac and cheese snob I take everything into consideration - cook of the noodle, sauce consistency, and sauce taste. While the taste was a bit more mold and cohesively creamy rather than a super flavorful Mac with a ton of different cheeses, it was incredible and felt more elevated than Mac you would get at a brewery for instance. This place is located in the heart of Little Italy in San Diego, which means the parking will be a nightmare. There are places that do offer valet parking but you're looking to pay at least $40-$50. Tips on parking is I just get a cheap parking on SpotHero app ahead of time and you'll only have to pay maybe eight to $10 for the whole day. This place is where you would have to make a reservation at least a month ahead if you want a specific date and time that you want to go. They have downstairs upstairs and a rooftop area. The vibe and the decoration from upstairs and downstairs is very different. The upstairs vibe is more casual and downstairs is more intimate. Unfortunately, this time when I've got their spicy margarita, it was so bad that I actually had to take it back. Which is rare.. how can you screw up Margarita?? Besides the drink, food we have gotten here were phenomenal. This is one of the best filet mignon that I've ever had. And that is saying a lot. I do think that their side dishes were mediocre nothing special, but their steak was on point. I would say the price wasn't outrageous compared to other steak places. I was able to snag a last minute reservation for a party of 4 for dinner on a Thursday. Parking is always tough so make sure you give yourself time to find a spot or do valet. For our entrees we decided to do family style with the 18oz ribeye with broccolini and mashed potatoes as sides. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and it was just the right amount to split with our party of 4. The broccolini was good, spicier than I expected. I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes, so creamy and delicious. For dessert we ordered the dark forest cake, which was decadent and not too sweet. We were celebrating a birthday so they also brought out a large macaron with a candle. It was a bit too sweet for me but still good. Overall, I've had pretty good experiences here. Beautiful venue, but food was not as spectacular as I'd hoped, especially for the price. Only thing complementary was the water. Bread is $9 and salty. Your protein choice comes solo, all sides extra. Steak was salty, mashed potatoes salty and lukewarm. Honestly, Ruth Chris is better. Very hard to read menu in the dark. Born & Raised is a fantastic restaurant with a very cute roof-top/patio bar situation. While on a quick visit to San Diego, I decided to stop by this bar on the recommendation on our Lyft driver. I'm so glad she did. We started off with a Hugo Spritz and then ordered the crudo, which was made with yellowtail that day. The Yellowtail Crudo was absolutely delicious. The Huge Spritz was refreshing and the bartender was kind enough to give us espresso martini shots to try. If I was a local in San Diego, I would absolutely be a regular at Born & Raised. read more
