Thuan Phat is one of the grocery stores I go to when we are craving things we sometimes cannot find at our Naval base grocery store. Mainly I come here to get Fried Fish ( Tilapia ) , they have a section inside where they will clean and fry any fish for you for free. Also, I come here for sauces , I get my wife's hot sauces here, and there's a ton of selections here. But lately I kept coming back here for their Fruits , my wife had sent me here this week like 3 times already for their fruits , the RAMBUTAN, LYCHEE, MANGOSTEEN. Other than Mango and Jackfruit that we get here, those 3 fruits are our favorite. So far these Fruits are still in season, so they are incredibly good. This grocery store is not as big or have many selections like H-Mart or 99 Ranch, but they do have a couple of great things you can still find here and great deals too sometimes. I don't see much staff around here but if I do need to ask for something they are helpful and friendly and guide me where I can find the food or item I'm looking for. For parking, they have a huge lot with parking spaces. read more

One of the biggest Vietnamese/ Southeast supermarkets in San Diego county. You can get almost everything here for your homemade cooking that you can dream of watching endless cooking episodes in YouTube. Full service seafood counter that can prep your fish and even fry to your fish. Anything that is part of the cow or pig or chicken or frog or snails etc that you cannot find anywhere else, try here. Not a bad Vietnamese grocery store. It might not be as tidy or bright as 99 ranch, but you could get sauces, ingredients that you don't find at 99ranch. They are also not as crowded. I can usually find soup bases, mixes here and I like getting fresh fish from here (you can get them clean and cut for free). They also sell fresh duck eggs. I've never had them, but good to know that they're available here. I might get them some day. read more

If Willy Wonka ever pivoted to Southeast Asian groceries, it would look exactly like Thuan Phat. This place is a full‑scale Vietnamese fever dream disguised as a normal supermarket. You walk in expecting Vons. You get Saigon. The produce section alone deserves its own theme music. Herbs, mushrooms, greens you didn't even know had names -- all fresher and cheaper than anything your American supermarket is pretending to offer. It's a straight-up cornucopia. Then you hit the meat counter and suddenly Ralphs and Vons feel like they should issue an apology. Marrow bones, femurs, trotters -- if you're making pho, ramen, chicken stock, or just want to feel like a culinary warlock, this is your playground. You will walk out with ingredients you didn't plan on buying and absolutely no regrets. Every aisle has some kind of delightful chaos. Dried pineapple flowers for homemade bitters for your signature cocktail? Absolutely. Industrial-sized bags of frog meat? Listen... maybe not for me. But if you need it, this is the place. No judgment, only abundance. It's as big as any mainstream grocery store, but stocked with so much cool stuff it feels like a teleportation portal to Southeast Asia. They have a lot of vegetarian items in the frozen food section. I haven't disliked one of them yet. One of my favorites is burdock patties which very closely resemble in texture and taste a McDonald's hamburger! I also like the shredded vegetarian lamb, their marinated chicken, and today I bought textured protein beef steaks to try. I know that some of the bigger producers of vegetarian and vegan foods have somewhat of a limited line of taste to try, so here's a store with an expanded vegetarian protein frozen food line. I posted one of the pictures below, and then, guess what? Kit Kats in matcha flavor, oooh! You'll find their aisles are prominently marked with signs above. Whenever I visit Thuan Phat Supermarket, it's usually for something very specific--SkyFlakes! They're similar to saltine crackers but crispier, and I absolutely love them. This market is my go-to spot to stock up. Beyond my cracker obsession, this is a great place if you're looking for authentic Asian grocery items. I'm ashamed that some Vietnamese businesses still operate this way. Go learn from 99 Ranch Market and H Mart and see how they run their stores! I do believe this supermarket is the best one in San Diego so far, with various selection of Asian products, some imported from Vietnam which I like so much. The most important things here that all vegetables here were fresh, not pricey like many other places. I always take my mom to this place at least once a week. read more

I've been coming to this grocery store for years. They have clean tanks for their seafood unlike other places which is apreciated. The produce, vegetables and fruit are fresh and better prices than other markets. You can find plenty vegetables you wouldn't find at say Ralphs or Food4less. This review seems to be long overdue, I have been going here since 2010 when I first moved to SD, the market is of course cannot beat 99 Ranch on varieties, still better than Vien Dong because of the space, the food to go which now gone since Covid, the prices maybe a little better, and for some specific items that Vien Dong didn't have in the past, take a look at all the moon cakes in the past year during the Covid shortage, this place really turned up, and they do offer to fry your fishes on the spot, not at Vien Dong. I consider this place a hybrid between Vietnamese and Cantonese market while 99 Ranch is more catering towards Taiwanese, Mainland and other Chinese ethnic groups. Not sure if the Thuan Phat location in OC also the same owner as this location or they just shared the same name, but the one in SD is the only one. read more

Sometimes the live dungenous crab is a great price at 4.99/pound. Though, the last times I saw these prices were in 2024. They have a pretty decent selection of Asian condiments, though didn't have LGM chili crisp on my visit in Feb 2025. read more

We have come here many times through the years to purchase Dungeness crab and haven't have any issues. We came today and when we got home, one of the crabs was dead. We brought it back and they refused to exchange it. It was a $25 crab. Lesson learned, check to make sure they're alive before you leave. Will be taking our business to 99 Ranch instead (Especially since it's much cleaner there)! read more

I have come here pretty regularly in the past, but today was my last straw. I have felt racially discriminated by the checkers on multiple occasions and I'm tired of feeling like my money isn't good enough. On multiple occasions, the checkers have looked at me and closed the check stand so they don't have to check out my groceries. Today, even though it wasn't busy and no one was behind me, the checker decided to throw my apples against the counter rim and bruise my apples that I was paying for. Mind you, I was on my phone texting, and hadn't said anything to this person. Then I was asked if I wanted a bag and I said yes and I expected my bag to be added to total I owed for my groceries, but I was refused a bag because I didn't have a dime to bag for the bag separately. I stood there in disbelief and the manager stepped in and asked the checker to give me a vegetable bag instead. I understand that I'm only half Asian and that this is an Asian grocery store, but I think that all races should be able to go to stores if they are acting reasonably and are able to pay. I'm sorry that because I'm only half Asian that my money isn't good enough. read more

Found this place by accident, and was super shocked on how massive this Asian store was. Lots of Vietnamese and Chinese products as well as some Filipino, Japanese, and Korean. Lots of nice fruits, veggies, and seafood. For sure will come back when I need to purchase a lot of Asian items. read more

This is a great seafood destination and have an exceptional produce section. It is the customer service that requires attention. There is no excuse to take 25 minutes to check out four patrons with a hand basket worth of food. It just sucked the souls out of the experience. Hello, I go to this store every week for food for my family and I am very unhappy that the fact there is a sign that stated if any costumer spent over $200, they are able to have a box of noodles for free. When I gave one of the workers my recipe that showed I have spent over $200 and I can be able to get the free box of noodles. She gave me a piece of butter and a bottle of spicy sauce. I told her that I have the recipe that shows that I did in fact spent over $200 and there was signs at the front desk of the store and the front door that says costumers can get a free box of noodles. It felt like everything was like a lie. She said that I couldn't get the free box of noodles because I only spent money on rice, and I think that is very wrong because either way I used my hard earned money to pay $200. read more

This is my go to store for grocery store supplies and everyday foods I cook at home. I usually come here to pick from there wide variety of fresh produce and herbs and spices. I also like that they have fresh seafood from everything from fish, shellfish and even snails and crabs and not to forget live frogs. When in season they sell live crawfish for a unbeatable price where you can do a seafood boil with friends and family. The seasonings and sauces are second to none where they basically have everything you need to whip up for favorite dish! They sell huge bags of rice and also they have kitchenware for sale too. The instant noodle section is enormous where they basically have every kind of noodle you would like from every country! The exotic fruits are my favorite where I personally enjoy the jackfruit, Logan, and dragon fruit. Customer service is always on top of there game and the lines move fast! Cleanliness could be better with deeper cleans in cracks and crevices but I'm not complaining. They dont take AMEX so bring your Visa or better yet cash! Decided to pop in over the weekend to do some grocery shopping. This supermarket is pretty huge a bit overpriced but it have almost everything you need here and more exotic items than some Asian markets I've been to. They have a frozen aisle, household items, fresh sea food/meat area, fresh vegetables, rolls and rolls of aisle with so many Asian spices and condiments. There's also multiple check out lanes, the lanes are pretty small and narrow. Friendly staff working there. They have bathrooms as well but it's pretty dirty. It's in a market place area with plenty of stores and restaurants around it. read more

Produce is super cheap There's also affordable seafood (it's Crab season right now so get in on that!) There is also a frozen vegetarian food section great selection of noodles, frozen dumplings, and frozen dimsum too! Discovered this place as I drove by one day. Stopped to check it out and was really impressed with the massive inventory of goods they carried. You can literally find anything you need for your asian kitchen. They do carry goods predominantly from Vietnam though. Don't expect any service from the workers tho. A guy smirked and snapped no at me when I politely asked if they had restrooms. But they in fact did have restrooms. If u know what u need and don't need help, this place is perfect for u. Their prices are cheap! Sometimes I suspect why their meat and produce can be so cheap. Another thing I need to mention. Loud music was played here. And it's not just instrumental music. The songs are old cantonese songs dating back to the early 90s. I enjoyed it so muc as i love the feeling of nostalgia. It brings back memory of my youth. Lol. Yes this isn't your normal grocery store. Or normal Asian grocery store. It's gonna smell like fish ass guts and there's gonna be bad customer service, but it's legit. You can find a seafood and meat counter. Bunch of live fish, they can gut it and skin it into different options. The meats will be cheaper. The Asian veggies are super fresh, just don't try to get American veggies like brussel sprouts or potatoes- not the best. Best of all, 50lbs quality jasmine rice for $50! Today, I went to purchase two live fish, but the worker at the fish counter tried to hide a dead fish among the live ones and sell it to me. When I pointed it out and asked for a fresh one, he became verbally and physically aggressive, even telling me to leave the store. He started saying offensive words, some of which were in a language I didn't understand. I asked to speak with a manager, but the worker claimed he was the manager and continued telling me to go home. When I spoke to the front desk, they said the actual manager wasn't in the store and started making excuses for the fish worker, saying he didn't speak English well. I told them I would wait for the manager, and they said it would take 25 minutes. After waiting for 40 minutes, I realized the manager wasn't going to show up. The store clearly didn't care about addressing the issue. read more

Good selection of food. There is many variety of food and produce is always fresh. I shop in this store often. But, the customer service is unpleasant. At the cashier, some workers have no eye contact and no Thank you. A customers said Thank you but the cashier didn't say anything. No need to trek out to Convoy for Asian treats now that I've discovered this great Vietnamese grocery right in my hood. This large grocery has an extensive & fascinating produce section, the sauce aisle is ever so comprehensive, and there are more fresh meats, seafoods & frozen options than you could try in a lifetime. Prices are very reasonable & it's a pleasing experience in itself to browse the many colorful, unique items festooning the aisles. I really like that this grocery carries strong selections of other world cuisines that's way better than what you'll find at Ralphs, Vons etc. Standouts include the Mexican, Filipino & Thai options. The fresh bakery section is a bit of a letdown--not many choices but I know it's unrealistic to expect a 99 Ranch experience here. read more

This is the best Vietnamese market in central SD imo. It isn't as fancy shamancy as others, but the prices are amazing. The meat and fish have always been fresh and the prices of the vegies is night and day cheaper then Zion or Hmart or the Mexican markets. The choices of things like noodles and rice and sauces are great and a lot of unusual stuff if you are used to shopping at Vons etc. As for having difficulty communicating this has NEVER been an issue for me here. WATCH OUT for this store when purchase a meat package. I got the "spoiled" meat inside the package. I usually go to this TP store to buy certain asian items ( dry noodles, spices or vegetables) where other stores either have them unavailable or at a higher price. However, there was one time that I bought this package of pork chops which looked very appealing ( lean & fresh) at their store. When I got home and as soon as I opened the package wrapper, this smell from the meat was really BAD like it had been spoiled for a while. Strange is that the meat color is still in "pink"!!! As I could not stand its smell, I decided to toss this whole meat package. To make sure they don't stink up my indoor garbage, i put the spoiled meat inside 3 nylon bags and added laundry Downy liquid to suppress the smell for my next garbage day pickup!!! NO MORE BUYING MEAT at that store. So scary ... Can't trust them! read more

Awesome market. I was told they had the best prices. I read the reviews here about unfriendly service. Not even close. Sure, English is likely the second (or third) language of many of the employees. Sure it smells like there is an active fishmonger or 5 in the back. But the fish look and smell clean and healthy. This place is stocked with so many unusual ingredients and best prices, I was combing through the aisles for an hour. Sure many employees are just minding their own business. But a woman handing out fish ball samples was very welcoming, and my cashier as well. Don't come here looking to be "served", come here to get some good ingredients and good prices. read more
