This meant that the final step was a much steeper drop off than the rest of the stairs. After futzing around with concrete pavers, we figured out what we wanted, and called Nauak to come and do the work of turning our kitbashed solution into something that would withstand New England winter. At the same time, we also needed to modify and improve the existing railing to make some mobility-impaired folks feel a lot more comfortable on the stairs while still allowing us to get snow off the steps. We wanted a pipe railing with no sharp corners and easy purchase to grab. At the same time, we asked them to put in a shelf next to the stairs for boxes, purses, etc, when going in and out of the door. They did a beautiful job. And once the concrete was set on the railing, they tested it, pronounced it excessively mobile, and came back to redo the anchors. My kids now swing through the space of the railing and it *does* *not* *move*. The shelf has been pronounced, "Brilliant!" by the person most in need of it. The splinters are gone from the original railing. And we will still be able to shovel snow off the steps without banging into the railing in the winter. Nauak does fantastic work, and they have pride in it to make sure they do it *right*. We will be hiring them again.

They were good about staying in touch with us over email during the week we were on vacation, so we knew what was up, which we appreciated a LOT - far too many contractors treat email like it's poisonous and communication like it's an afterthought. They were also nicely flexible when bluestone treads proved scarce (other contractors we'd contacted also had trouble getting firm quotes for them) and we asked about switching to granite in order to minimize delays. They did really good work - the new stairs are solidly built, to the plan we asked for, and look fantastic. The new railings haven't gone in yet (waiting on the company making them), but based on their work so far I have high confidence that they'll do a great job with the installation.
