The deck, the planters, the raised flagstone patio, the retaining wall with a border garden.

JML has a fine-tuned process to deliver quality projects on time and on budget. As a project manager, I appreciate! We had very specific goals with our garden project: maximize the space as an outdoor room and create beautiful views from the windows. After we spoke with Joe about our goals, he spent almost an hour in the garden making drawings. And his first design was what we chose. Our project was a complete transformation of the space. Retaining wall had to be built, patio replaced, deck built. All in a tiny Glen Park garden. With 24 stairs up... The craftsmanship displayed by the team (Andy and Michael) was beyond measure. They paid attention to all the details, even things I hadn't thought of. Our garden became their garden in the way they worked. Sure, JML might be more expensive. The investment is worth it. The piece of mind is worth it. The result is worth it. My photos show the hardscaping as the garden is only 2 months old. Joe keeps checking in to see how the CA natives are doing, and with their monthly maintenance service, I know my garden will thrive.

Earlier this year we worked with Janet Moyer Landscaping on an extensive project that included our front and back yards and sides of our house. It was a pleasure working with Joe (head of design and installation) on the design of the project and everyone we interacted with during the project was extremely professional. I highly recommend working with them!

We had a mostly great experience with JML doing our medium-sized back yard remodel in Glen Park. We would recommend them to friends, and would use them again if we need to do more work. The pros: 1) Everyone we worked with from JML was kind, courteous, and went out of their way to make things work well. The consultations and back-and-forth on design and costing went well. They were very professional. The communication during both the design and installation phase was pretty consistent, with only a few cases of too-long turnaround time. Several reviews complain about the automatic billing happening too fast. This happened to us, and we simply asked that we receive an email several days before an invoice was charged. The JML team then gave us a heads up every time, and we had no problems with our bank. 2) We liked the design, and the team worked with us to make some changes to our liking. We also had a budget, and they definitely helped us stick to our budget. They broke down the estimated costs into "a la carte" options so we could add / take away as needed. The final result is quite nice, and very close to the original design. We love it. 3) Several issues popped up during the installation, and the JML team were flexible and responsive in working through them with us. They were particularly helpful with installing and maintaining a dog fence around some newly planted grass, to keep our obnoxious dog out while it could grow. They also helped address and take responsibility for some dead plants. The cons are all around communication: 4) There were several changes between the initial planning sessions / design, and what started happening during installation a few months later. For example, the original design called for re-using sod from our old yard, but instead they went with planting seed. These changes were not communicated... at all. They just happened, and we had to notice them, and raise the issues with JML. 5) We rarely knew when the team would be working on site or not (other than a general M-Th schedule, to which the team did not adhere). Ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem, but with our dog needing use of the back yard it was important to understand when she could roam free vs needing to be kept inside during work days. 6) Near the end of the project there were several issues still unresolved, and it took too much effort on my part to get them resolved. For example, the design called for re-aligning a stairway attached to our deck. The metal stair rails were badly scratched during construction, and the re-alignment left a large, discolored bare wood patch in the side of the deck (the rest is stained). When I raised these issues, the response was "well this wasn't in the original contract". I pushed back, and the team cheerfully fixed this, but the right course of action would have been for these (and a few other) items to be noticed by JML and fixed right the first time. The final verdict: All in all a mostly great experience, and we would recommend. As with all contractors, keeping on top of the project details and engaging in regular communication is important to ensure the final result that you want.

I've dreamt of my outdoor kitchen/yard for 30 years. JML and their crew exceeded my expectation. We have a small yard in the Westwood Park neighborhood in SF. I seriously love my yard!!!! We started our design process way before Covid hit (so thankful). Joe Coutour transformed my vague vision to an amazing space to cook and entertain. Social distancing outdoor entertainment has been taken to the next level especially with the restaurant heaters. It's been a rough 18 months but seeing my yard transform has brought our family and friends so much joy not to mention a few pounds. Thank you sooooo much! I appreciate everything JML has created for us.

We had a very positive experience with Janet Moyer Landscaping. We have a very small backyard that we never used. We wanted to do something to make it nice. We worked closely with Joe Couture, who did a great job listening to us, making a thoughtful design and then executing it. Joe was always nice, easy going and a great communicator. He worked really hard to make the hot tub, deck and stairs work and fit in a very small space, and the whole thing came out looking super charming and not cramped or crowded (we were afraid of the latter). With Joe's guidance, we also re-sized our a small deck and adding some planters and lights. The little yard is now a delight to spend time in and a central gathering spot for our family and our kids with their friends. It is so great to have it and has been such a positive addition. We highly recommend Janet Moyer Landscaping.

Our experience with Janet Moyer Landscaping was extraordinary: they designed and executed a beautiful backyard for us. At every turn they were communicative, creative, and, it being 2020, gritty in figuring out safe ways to proceed during the pandemic. The end results are spectacular. We would leap at the chance to work with them again and again.

How it started and how it ended

Backyard gardens in the city vary wildly, from steep grades to changing light due to ongoing construction projects around your neighborhood. When I decided to update my backyard, I wanted someone familiar with the area, cared about water conservation, native plants, upcycling old materials and could help with design and drip irrigation. It was a long process and not cheap, but the results have been worth the upheaval. Joe came up with a creative redesign that reflected my goals, and Clay did a tremendous job at the execution! We had to adjust here and there along the way but I trusted the process, and I couldn't be happier. I really enjoyed working with everyone! I plan on taking advantage of the maintenance they offer only for clients.

I had a list of must haves, wants, and aspirational items. Elliott was able to help design a project that we could work on in stages. I gave them a budget and we were able to get the majority of the things I wanted within the budget! The team was professional, courteous, and efficient! I can't believe how quickly they were able to finish the project, and they left the space neat and clean. I appreciate the flexibility when I wanted things moved or changed (even while the project was happening). I appreciate Markus' availability to review the work and his desire to make sure I was happy with the final results. They planted some things that died quickly (that is fine, that happens) and others that were in shaded areas that require more light than they get; essentially not growing in months (that should not have happened). Additionally, they forgot some plants we had discussed and then required multiple follow-ups on my end to replace some that died. Finally, and this is what really made me give them a one star review, they recommended a new gravel for our stairs with an adhesive to keep it together. That adhesive failed. They changed their story multiple times on the cause of the issue depending on who on their team I talked to; field crew said it was them, owner said it was on the supplier...In the end, it was on me to pay them for a more powerful adhesive product and for another day of labor for a team to come back out to complete the job properly. Well, guess what, that adhesive is coming apart again after limited use. In all, poor choice of some plants / locations and subpar engineering work and terrible accountability. If you like to pay for other people's mistakes, by all means, use them.

When I reached out, I was eager and ready to act on a long overdue project. Out of a handful of landscapers I met with, Tsering was not only the fastest from design to quote to contract but more importantly he was the only one who gave me accurate timelines for expectations of next steps. There was trust building right away. Throughout the project, he was communicative, genuine, and gave honest feedback/advice to my questions. When surprises came up, he always presented it with options, recommendation, and cost so we can quickly come to a good decision. He and his team went above and beyond on multiple parts of the project to maximize success, utility, and safety for our family. It was thrilling to see our backyard changing day by day over two weeks to something completely different and beautiful. We've been enjoying our new backyard, thanks to Tsering and his team. I highly recommend Shambhala Landscapes!

Tsering took our small, weirdly shaped, overgrown backyard and transformed it into a functional piece of art--all in only four weeks! We are so happy that our son will be able to enjoy it for years to come. Tsering is not just a contractor, but an artist and a craftsman. He does everything from start to finish. He provides a glimmer of his vision early on, in a simple one-page design. Once he starts working, he refines that vision and brings it to life with his amazing team. At the end of each day, we were shocked at how much they got done and at the quality of the craftsmanship. Tsering takes incredible pride in his work. After designing and building a beautiful fence for us, he geeked out over some of special hardware he installed to make it extra secure (and we otherwise would not have noticed). Moments like that came up during each phase of the project. Tsering also used the best materials, even when left to his discretion. He purchased more Ipe wood, poured more concrete, and even bought a bigger maple tree than in the estimate. (He did not charge us extra.) During the course of our project, Tsering also found many ways to improve our backyard (and home) that went beyond the scope of the project. He re-stucco'd an old balcony, re-did the weatherproofing of an old door, sawed through several busted lockboxes, and added an extra little Ipe wall. Because he was ahead of schedule on the project, he didn't charge us for any of it (not even materials). We've attached a few before and after photos, but they honestly barely do justice to his work. Tsering is one of a kind. If you want a backyard that looks like his portfolio, you should hire him. We are hoping that one day we'll be able to get on his calendar for our front yard as well.

After the initial consultation with Luis, Andre provided a detailed quote with breakdown of all the items, labor cost, and materials. Their quote is not the cheapest but definitely the longest. I like how the quote had all the cost breakdown and specifics regarding choice of materials and scope of work. Another thing I wanted to highlight is the fact that Andre was able to propose something creative and different to enhance our existing design, so that we ended up with multi-tier retaining walls and re-using a lot of the existing boulders on the side. Our project involved a lot of demo / excavation on a steep hillside, building a large paved deck with railing + steps up and down. From start from finish, the crew worked every single weekday from 8am sharp to 5pm. There is no playing loud music, no messing around during lunch time, just super organized hard work and impeccable work ethic. Due to the difficulty to access the backyard, everything was done by hand, and the end result came out amazing. To our surprise, the entire project took LESS than two months! What a transformation! The receptionist confirmed that the estimator had gone to the wrong address and assured me he would come to the correct one. Unfortunately, after waiting another hour, I never heard from the estimator or the office. My attempts to call the office also went unanswered. At that point, it became clear that no one was coming and no one was going to let me know. Mistakes happen, but what disappointed me most was the lack of communication and professionalism. GCSF wasted more than 90 minutes of my time and couldn't extend the courtesy of a simple phone call or update. Based on this experience, I can't recommend them.
