JML has a fine-tuned process to deliver quality projects on time and on budget. As a project manager, I appreciate! We had very specific goals with our garden project: maximize the space as an outdoor room and create beautiful views from the windows. After we spoke with Joe about our goals, he spent almost an hour in the garden making drawings. And his first design was what we chose. Our project was a complete transformation of the space. Retaining wall had to be built, patio replaced, deck built. All in a tiny Glen Park garden. With 24 stairs up... The craftsmanship displayed by the team (Andy and Michael) was beyond measure. They paid attention to all the details, even things I hadn't thought of. Our garden became their garden in the way they worked. Sure, JML might be more expensive. The investment is worth it. The piece of mind is worth it. The result is worth it. My photos show the hardscaping as the garden is only 2 months old. We had a mostly great experience with JML doing our medium-sized back yard remodel in Glen Park. We would recommend them to friends, and would use them again if we need to do more work. The pros: 1) Everyone we worked with from JML was kind, courteous, and went out of their way to make things work well. The consultations and back-and-forth on design and costing went well. They were very professional. The communication during both the design and installation phase was pretty consistent, with only a few cases of too-long turnaround time. Several reviews complain about the automatic billing happening too fast. This happened to us, and we simply asked that we receive an email several days before an invoice was charged. The JML team then gave us a heads up every time, and we had no problems with our bank. 2) We liked the design, and the team worked with us to make some changes to our liking. We also had a budget, and they definitely helped us stick to our budget. They broke down the estimated costs into "a la carte" options so we could add / take away as needed. The final result is quite nice, and very close to the original design. We love it. 3) Several issues popped up during the installation, and the JML team were flexible and responsive in working through them with us. They were particularly helpful with installing and maintaining a dog fence around some newly planted grass, to keep our obnoxious dog out while it could grow. They also helped address and take responsibility for some dead plants. The cons are all around communication: 4) There were several changes between the initial planning sessions / design, and what started happening during installation a few months later. For example, the original design called for re-using sod from our old yard, but instead they went with planting seed. These changes were not communicated... at all. They just happened, and we had to notice them, and raise the issues with JML. 5) We rarely knew when the team would be working on site or not (other than a general M-Th schedule, to which the team did not adhere). Ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem, but with our dog needing use of the back yard it was important to understand when she could roam free vs needing to be kept inside during work days. 6) Near the end of the project there were several issues still unresolved, and it took too much effort on my part to get them resolved. For example, the design called for re-aligning a stairway attached to our deck. The metal stair rails were badly scratched during construction, and the re-alignment left a large, discolored bare wood patch in the side of the deck (the rest is stained). When I raised these issues, the response was "well this wasn't in the original contract". I pushed back, and the team cheerfully fixed this, but the right course of action would have been for these (and a few other) items to be noticed by JML and fixed right the first time. The final verdict: All in all a mostly great experience, and we would recommend. As with all contractors, keeping on top of the project details and engaging in regular communication is important to ensure the final result that you want. read more

I've dreamt of my outdoor kitchen/yard for 30 years. JML and their crew exceeded my expectation. We have a small yard in the Westwood Park neighborhood in SF. I seriously love my yard!!!! We started our design process way before Covid hit (so thankful). Joe Coutour transformed my vague vision to an amazing space to cook and entertain. We had a very positive experience with Janet Moyer Landscaping. We have a very small backyard that we never used. We wanted to do something to make it nice. We worked closely with Joe Couture, who did a great job listening to us, making a thoughtful design and then executing it. Joe was always nice, easy going and a great communicator. He worked really hard to make the hot tub, deck and stairs work and fit in a very small space, and the whole thing came out looking super charming and not cramped or crowded (we were afraid of the latter). With Joe's guidance, we also re-sized our a small deck and adding some planters and lights. The little yard is now a delight to spend time in and a central gathering spot for our family and our kids with their friends. It is so great to have it and has been such a positive addition. We had quite an extensive renovation of our garden in Pacifica. We worked with Joe on a detailed design which we reviewed and modified to our preferences. It was important to plant plants/shrubs that would thrive in our coastal location and this was carefully considered. The reconstruction of the walkways, the patio and the lighting transformed our garden. The illumination at evening time really highlights the beautiful design. Needless to say, we love it and we've received many compliments from our neighbors! Janet Moyer Landscaping designed and installed our backyard in San Francisco. The initial meeting with Janet and Michael was fruitful and productive. They listened carefully to my ideas and showed me various possibilities that would meet our desires for the yard. We accepted their bid even though we found it a little expensive in comparison to other bids. The only downside to this part of the process occurred when I asked for a change in the plan. I thought this would not be a problem as the contract stated that the price for the drawings included one change, but when I asked for it, Michael appeared quite upset. However, it all eventually worked out and the installation was beautifully executed. Everyone who came to the house to work was courteous, hard working, and completely professional. There was a lot of hardscape to be done with some unusual problems, but all were solved creatively. Caleb, project manager, was extremely patient with any concerns and even helped with some designs that were not in the initial plan. He was able to make the whole process fun and engaging. We are now enjoying our yard and continuing with maintenance visits. I am able to communicate concerns by email before each visit, and this process has been very successful. My plants are flourishing with the newly installed irrigation system, and I am very pleased with the outcome. read more

We had/are having a wonderful experience with Janet Moyer Landscaping. Janet and Michael came over on the initial visit/pre bid meeting and gave us a lot of good information about our yard. I was personally dead set against removal of a couple of trees and the old hot tub in our yard, but Michael explained the reasons that they probably should be removed. They were very thoughtful and understanding about our preferences and tastes and very informative regarding our options. Janet took all of our plant ideas and managed to work them into the design quite well. We specified that the yard needed to be dog friendly and boy did her design deliver on that front! The installation took a couple of weeks. Their installation crew did a fantastic job of turning the design into reality with a minimum of hassle. Now we have a fantastic yard and a happy dog. First of all let me say that I am a very calm, rational and reasonable person, and that my experience with JML was 10 times more painful than my 2.5 bathroom renovation that had just been completed. I needed my very small yard here in Noe Valley "fluffed" A friend and neighbor referred me so I was dumbfounded by the "two star" experience I endured. My "individualized" design proposal was (erroneously) cut and paste from their previous jobs. Really? $500 for cut and paste? Given the size and scope of my project, the contract was confusing and overbearing, so much so, I almost felt I needed my attorney to review it. Complete with addendum's, additional terms and conditions, and an arbitration clause. Really? I thought planting a small garden was supposed to be a happy experience. The kicker came w/ the actual installation. The plants looked like they came from the garden department at K-Mart (and the work was equally as sloppy). One plant clearly had a fungus, while others had torn, tattered and/or brown leaves. I was shocked. Janet told me that sometimes the plants are wind damaged from being on the truck. "Well why are you planting them in my yard?", I asked. I gave them a second star only because they corrected all of the issues that I raised. But for the amount of money they charge...there should not have been these kinds of issues. Lastly, don't give them your credit card number. They act as though they are making your life easier...the problem is, they will charge your payments the very second they step foot out of your front door, regardless of whether or not you are satisfied with their work. There are plenty of landscaping services in San Francisco...I encourage you to keep looking. read more

Janet's involvement with the business seems to be limited to the fact they use her name. Her male partner is rude. We had an easy enough project all planned out and needed them only to implement our plan. Male partner couldn't handle this and seemed to have to do everything his way or not at all. Positives: Joe and Tyler were friendly, open and hardworking in some unusual logistical conditions (having to lug planters and potting soil up many stairs, working in very rainy conditions to complete the work). Joe always showed interest in what we wanted, and made some changes on the fly. They were tidy, also under challenges of coming in and out of doors constantly. The wooden platform they constructed around our hot tub looks great. There was also a four-level installation of irrigation that was probably more than they bargained for, but they installed it and addressed my concerns. Like other reviewers, I found the communication about when they would be on site lacking, and I also didn't like the automatic billing of my card. In hind sight, I would have asked for another method of payment, so that I had some leverage over how the project was progressing. It might have resulted in better communication. Michael, the other principal with Janet, was somewhat unpleasant in a gruff, arrogant way. Janet gave guidance in the planning stage of what plants could work where. I'm not sure of her other behind the scenes involvement. The plants put in are doing fine (job finished 2 months ago), but don't expect your garden to look 'grown and lush' right away. I accept that plants must have time to progress and get fuller, but I must say I had the impression they brought whatever they had on hand sometimes, to see if it would work for us. Some plants were obviously not healthy when planted, and two have died. Happily they will replace them because of their 30 day guarantee, but quite sad after all that money to look at sad looking plants. Also an old woody rose bush was put into a planter (definitely not in the approved plan) but Joe happily removed it when I asked him too. But why is that even happening to begin with? There are some business-model practices happening here that put me off a bit. That's why the 3 stars. We are trying their Maintenance service, so I'll follow up on how that goes. But the first visit (besides looking at dead plants to be replaced) we mostly talked about what other plants we wanted (more herbs in the herb garden, tulips and annuals to make the beds look nicer). Why wasn't that part of the design service, thinking through how to make the garden look it's best now AND into the future? Was I supposed to point out that we would have liked a bigger variety of herbs? Bottom line: We hired Janet Moyer because we wanted the landscaping for our brand new house to be "done up!". Now that the project is done, we feel we have a good base to work from, with lots of room for additions and plant-editing, and with a good irrigation system to help us conserve water and keep the plants alive. But unfortunately we don't feel like we had the Blue Ribbon level of landscapers. read more

The best thing about working with Janet is that she understands how families use their outdoor space. How the space needs to grow and adapt as toddlers grow into young children and into teens. Also, she listened to what I wanted, and designed a space that fit all my requests: Meandering pathways, a way for the kids to use their bikes, space for a play structure (and when the play structure is no longer needed, the overall design of the space will not be impacted at all), and edible plants. I said I wanted the garden to have new things to discover at every turn, so I could be inspired just by taking a quick stroll through the space. The variety and beauty of the plants she picked and their placement really satisfies my request. She made sure to choose plants that are child friendly (ie non toxic when eaten), and used some plants with soft, velvety leaves to increase the child friendliness of the space, and encourage the kids to really get down and explore the plants, and mixed those with some rubbery leaves, prickly leaves, and a few other textures. I really love our garden. It works for all of our outdoor uses - play time, relaxing, party hosting. Very versatile. So why 4 stars instead of 5? Well, the other yelp reviews are not completely off-base. While Janet is a great designer, eco-conscious, and always learning about new landscaping techniques, the crew that works on the hardscaping could use more experience and training. I had quite a few issues with a fence and deck they built. Some of the people on her crew seem to lack a certain attention to detail. The good news is that they do what they can to correct the mistakes once you call them out (but what a drag it is that there are mistakes that have to be called out, should have been done right in the first place). The bad news is that sometimes the mistakes would be too much work/time/money to correct. They do stay on top of billing - which I actually consider as a positive. Then I know right away what I'm being charged for, rather than receiving an invoice a month later and having to ask a lot of questions to understand the charges. Why is it a bad thing to have a good business office? Oh, and I love the automatic irrigation system they installed. I'm too busy with my kids and managing my house to remember to water the plants. The system they installed is totally worry free and very high tech. The system receives satellite readings that tell it how much moisture the ground received the day before so that it can water just the right amount. They also set it up so that different areas of the yard receive different amounts of water - only the amount necessary for those particular plants. What a great way to conserve water! Precise irrigation. Love it. There is a small annual fee for the satellite readings, but it more than pays for itself by how much water you save. Another good thing about Janet Moyer Landscaping is that they are willing to work with subcontractors outside of their own pool. I had wanted to look into grey water irrigation, something they are not too experienced in yet, and they were happy to meet with me and a grey water consultant to discuss the idea. (Turns out grey water would be really difficult to do in my situation, but at least they were open to the discussion!) I would, and have, recommended Janet Moyer Landscaping to anyone looking to beautify their backyard in a family friendly, eco-conscious way. read more

The staff is as friendly as can be and went out of their way to help us out and make sure we had what we needed. It felt like we were working with real people just being friendly, as opposed to a business. Add to that the fact that they are good at their business and focus on high quality service and you have the perfect fit. My parents have also used this company for their landscaping needs and their backyard is totally transformed. We were hoping to be able to use a local business (our garden is two blocks from the Janet Moyer storefront on Valencia), but found this company completely unresponsive. Two weeks after we filled out the form on their website describing our project we received an e-mail proposing that someone come out for an estimate. The bosses had been "on vacation" during June (mentioned as "the busy season" in response to other reviews here). Naively, we jumped at the chance. Since then, total silence. No one followed up. No one came. Of course there are many other landscapers out there (Janet Moyer is listed 17th on Yelp when I search for "landscaping near my home"). Perhaps our project is too small. We had budgeted $10,000 to improve our backyard. Apparently the Moyer operation is only interested in the big guys. read more

Our backyard had never been touched prior to us living here. It was a field on a hill. On a recommendation of a friend and neighbor who have used their services for garden design and maintenance we hired Janet Moyer Landscaping to come in and work wih us and our dreams on designing a beautifully tiered garden. They created a wonderful blueprint delinieating the decks, new stairs, walls and all the plants and trees we were interested in. It's a wonderful space to be in. We bought our house five years ago thinking we would pretty much live in the back yard. But five years later we had only used the backyard once or twice. Now, after Janet Moyer worked their magic, we are outside eating, playing, reading and napping every single day. They helped fix our usability problems with a simple and ingenious design, they were communicative and addressed all of our concerns during the design process. During installation Joe and his team were efficient, clean and reliable, and even worked around our baby's nap schedule and played with our dog. At the end of the project they were very flexible with our last minute changes (hanging a hammock, refinishing some deck problems). Best of all, when Janet Moyer's initial bid for the work was too high for our budget, they worked with us to cut the bid almost in half. Look no further. I have worked with Janet Moyer Landscaping over the past 20 years. I have met with Janet and Michael a few times over the years to plan changes in the gardens. They set up a dog run area, and have installed additional drip systems, new plants, and pavers over a previously grassy area. They have maintained our front and back gardens with regular maintenance visits. The maintenance staff is wonderful to work with; I am able to tell them in advance by email what I want/need to be done, and they in turn communicate with me about the health of the gardens and what might be needed. When my large Meyer lemon tree was listing after a windstorm this winter, they were able to come by the next day to stake it up. I recommend them highly. read more

I'm writing this review not as a client but as a person who was in need of help. On May 12th The company I work for was working a construction job at the same location as Janet Moyer Landscaping. I had a piece of debris fly in o my eye and I could not get it out. I was struggling, badly. The long and short is that Caleb and Ryan (both employees of Janet Moyer) must have seen me crouched in the corner pouring saline into my eye. Eventually I got into my work truck in an attempt to get out of everyone's way. Not soon after Caleb (a complete stranger at the time) knocked on the window of the truck and offered to hook up a hose and let me wash my eyes! Wow! Kind people do exist! Unfortunately by now I had scratched my eye and had to go see a doctor. Caleb and Ryan were both there upon my return and both seemed genuinely concerned for my well being. So again, I'm not writing this as a client but to attest to the character of Janet Moyers employees. You guys are awesome and I very much appreciated your gesture. Thanks fellas! read more

Prospective customers beware... Janet Moyer is the first and only landscaper that seems to request $$ upfront for every single minute she will spend with you. First there is the $120 fee just so that she and her partner can show you her portfolio and come visit your property. And then there is a $1600 fee for the design and "installation deposit," which she asks you to pay up front just to reserve your spot in their queue which is supposedly booked 6-8 months in advance. Well, we paid both fees but after seeing some of her lackluster and uninspired designs (she didn't even listen to our requests), we decided not to go forward with the installation which wasn't going to start for another 8 months anyway. Of course, Janet Moyer refused to refund the installation reservation fee ($1000) and even hung up on us when we asked for an explanation. All around, just a terrible experience. Just wanted to post a warning to others who may feel pressured by Janet to put money up front. You will be disappointed by her designs and will not be able to back out of the installation without forfeiting your installation deposit. Just all out creepy people to do business with... Oh, and another thing that she does which I heard from another customer that had the misfortune of going forward with an installation is that she will ask for a credit card authorization and then talk you into a monthly maintenance fee. Your credit card will be billed automatically and you won't be able to back out of that either... Lastly, Janet Moyer will also offer financing for the installation, hmmm, isn't that a conflict of interest? Your opinion in this matter, is one sided to make you look good. Customers don't get this angry when things go as well as you seem to think they did. You ripped me off by charging exorbitant prices for the plants and then refusing to guarantee them because you didn't get the management contract.
