We hired Tsering because we wanted our backyard to look like the photos on his website. He delivered. Tsering took our small, weirdly shaped, overgrown backyard and transformed it into a functional piece of art--all in only four weeks! We are so happy that our son will be able to enjoy it for years to come. Tsering is not just a contractor, but an artist and a craftsman. He does everything from start to finish. He provides a glimmer of his vision early on, in a simple one-page design. Once he starts working, he refines that vision and brings it to life with his amazing team. At the end of each day, we were shocked at how much they got done and at the quality of the craftsmanship. Tsering takes incredible pride in his work. After designing and building a beautiful fence for us, he geeked out over some of special hardware he installed to make it extra secure (and we otherwise would not have noticed). Moments like that came up during each phase of the project. Tsering also used the best materials, even when left to his discretion. He purchased more Ipe wood, poured more concrete, and even bought a bigger maple tree than in the estimate. (He did not charge us extra.) During the course of our project, Tsering also found many ways to improve our backyard (and home) that went beyond the scope of the project. He re-stucco'd an old balcony, re-did the weatherproofing of an old door, sawed through several busted lockboxes, and added an extra little Ipe wall. Tsering and his amazing crew just finished a project to completely transform our backyard, garage, and driveway and we are thrilled with the final result! Our backyard needed to be completely demolished, leveled, and landscaped. Our first meeting with Tsering we told him we didn't have much of a vision (just not our strength) but we wanted some sort of lawn area for our kid to play as well as a fire pit and dining area for us to enjoy, and he showed us some ideas and talked us through options and then set off to make an amazing design and execute it. He always showed up when he said he would and did what he said he would when he said. As with any project, the occasional unexpected thing came up (eg. additional concrete foundation in the backyard that needed extra demo'ing), and Tsering was quick to communicate about everything and any added costs were presented to us with options before he proceeded. For the added demo he even only charged us for the extra dump run and not the labor. He and his crew were super respectful of our space, on time every day and worked incredibly hard to finish the project in what felt like record time (only 5 weeks for the entire project). My husband and I were also split on certain decisions regarding the garage (like drywall etc) and Tsering helped us navigate the trade-offs and decision making, lending his expertise, and this was super helpful for us making decisions and we are both super happy with the final results. We had a pretty sizeable job (for us) including replacing the entire fence line, replacing retaining walls, resurfacing an old concrete wall, installing turf, demo/building a deck, lighting for everything, and replacement of badly sun damaged home siding. We love our new back yard so much and we are outside all the time now. It makes the home feel bigger as it's greatly increased the livable space we have. We collected 4-5 bids, and while we found the pricing to be in the middle, I got the sense that the quality and value for money would lead to the best outcome working with Tsering and his team. Also of note, they were able to help out with some fabrication work for custom enhancements, as well as small utility adjustments. The team are super talented and nothing was subbed out. So wonderful was our previous large yard and deck project that we came right back to Tsering and his crew when we finally were ready for a complete renovation of our kitchen. Just as before, we would give ten stars if we could. Because Shambhala is a 'landscape' co we were not sure he'd be willing to do our kitchen. But it turns out Tsering a both a landscape and general contractor even if most of his work seems to be the larger outdoor projects with which he is an absolute artist. Like last time, we planned ahead to get a place in his busy schedule and to be sure all was prepared. Once the time came we dreaded being without a kitchen for an extended time. We needn't have worried - his amazing crew (some from our previous job) was totally all over this job and it was completed to perfection in about 3.5 weeks! This renovation was 'down to the studs'. When they reached the studs however there was big trouble with both electrical and plumbing. When they were done, we had new panel, new wiring, new plumbing and then new everything else in the kitchen. They cut and prepared the gorgeous soapstone counter tops themselves. What can we say - we absolutely love our new kitchen. Tsering and his crew are amazingly skilled, polite and committed problem solvers. They make s--t happen! The price we considered totally reasonable especially in light of the unknown plumbing and electrical problems uncovered during the demo. We are now thinking about our downstairs and when we can get in the cue for another piece of Tsering's very valuable time. We worked with Tsering and his crew during August 2020 and it was a great experience. We originally did not have a good idea of what was possible but saw pictures on his Yelp page and showed them to him for the rough design concept. He worked with us to come up with a similar design that fit our space and preferred maintenance level. Tsering and company are miracle workers. They took our small and blasé backyard and transformed it into a beautiful urban oasis. In the span of 3 weeks, I watched a patch of crappy sod and poorly crafted decks turn into a beautiful, hardscaped backyard complete with amazing flora, a natural gas firepit and an amazing outdoor kitchen. Tsering came over and consulted free of charge and emailed me a proposal based on some work he had done before and what we wanted in a yard. We changed a few plants, but overall loved the work he proposed. Tsering gave us a time and price estimate and we shook hands. I hired Shambhala to build out a garden design in our typical SF back yard; typical because it is small and shady, but full of potential. Tsering proved not only knowledgeable about plants and their care but also an excellent project- and client-manager. He did the construction work as well as laying in the soil, helping select and deliver the plants and of course, all the planting. He also designed irrigation and lighting for the garden and has done its maintenance for a year as the garden has filled in and developed. I am completely happy with Tsering's/Shambhala's work. He is quiet, considered and careful. I always enjoyed our conversations about plants and their care and when we had the occasional problem (why do our citrus leaves look so yellow?) he had a ready answer (which he had already implemented before I brought it up). His costs are eminently reasonable and it's clear he takes pride in his work. The pièce de résistance of his creative efforts resulted from my noticing an unused long piece of granite, part of the lot we had bought for a stone path, left untouched. We came up with the idea of using that stone and some other left-over granite to create a rustic, organic bench (take a look at the pictures). We were all quite pleased. I'm sure being a Tibetan (and a scholar!) doesn't automatically make you a spiritual person--but when Tsering finished the bench, he said it brought harmony to the whole. Tsering and team transformed our backyard from a place we spent absolutely no time, to our favorite part of our house in about 4 weeks. It looks like part of a resort in wine country! We have one of the slightly larger than average San Francisco backyards (ya know, really small, but not the smallest). They tore almost everything out except for a few nice trees. They built two new fences, added a retaining wall that spans the yard, created a 2-level flagstone patio, built a custom natural gas firepit, LED lighting, drip system, and several beautiful planters with a great mix of low maintenance plants. All of the work is top notch. Tsering and team were also very easy to work with and built a lot of trust during the process. They did the little things that matter - like being really careful about closing the garage door whenever they weren't in front of the house, and making sure the necessary mess never spread beyond the working area. Tsering's design work is excellent - we had a 1 hour walkthrough/conversation about what we wanted, and his design was spot on. The only miss we had was quickly corrected after a brief conversation (the firepit bench was not as long as I expected - he tore out the completed bench and replaced with one that was perfect the next day). He was also great with follow up a couple of months later when a couple of plants had died - he quickly replaced the two that were clearly dead along with 2 others that were suspect. I cannot recommend Tsering and his team highly enough! We had a wonderful experience working with them and would hire them again in a heartbeat! With our son about to turn one year old, my husband and I realized it was high time that we revamped our backyard to make it more family friendly. I also have a maintenance contract with Shambhala. Tsering comes monthly and has maintained the garden for more than a year. Tasks include pruning trees and bushes, weeding, pest control and putting in new plants--plus cleaning up. The new garden includes a brick pathway, a new redwood fence with two gates, a redwood porch with three steps, a concrete area for trash bins, and a drip irrigation system. Tsering did the same for plant selection: He recommended a palette and then worked with us to finalize it. Tsering is very creative and has a great eye for design. I was impressed by his use of space in our backyard and his placement of all the elements we wanted (stone platform for a fire pit, stone pathways, dry creek, bamboo tree, Japanese maple, etc.).
