I anticipate being the last one to review this spot as their signage said last 10 days. Hate to be the one breaking the news for any Joann fans who have been living under a rock but they are going out of business. If you see this before they close though, while limited things are left they are heavily discounted! We snagged a couple things that I thought were a decent deal. For the most part though this is not a store I would usually visit, just not the stuff I would typical care for. It is easily evident they are close to being closed with how few products they had left and the disaster of how a lot of areas of the store looked. Can't really blame the workers that much though I am sure it's not worth the effort with so few days left. I also overheard a worker tell a customer their bathroom is out of order and wet everywhere. Best craft store around. I'm a cross stitcher, and my boyfriend likes to make fleece blankets, so this store is one we frequent often. I have never gone there looking for a color floss and left empty handed. They always have deals, and they have SO many choices for fabrics, it's unbelievable. The staff are incredibly nice and helpful. Highly recommend for any crafting needs! read more

AFTER MANY YEARS OF USING JOANN FABRICS FOR SEWING AND CRAFT PROJECTS I HAVE DECIDED TO AVOID THE BUSINESS IN FAVOR OF COMPETITORS. LOCATION 1064 BRIGHTON AVE STE D, PORTLAND, ME 04102 Extremely unprofessional and rude staff including a woman who *represented herself as the store manager*. A recent shopping experience at this location was extremely stressful. I was repeatedly insulted by a very rude and hostile *manager* and when I asked her name, SHE REFUSED to provide. She then yelled at me in front of a line of customers she would "call the police" IF I took her picture with my phone to identify her to JOANN Corp complaint lines. I advised her to make the call and snapped her photo. My experience with this alleged *store manager* was shameful and without excuse. In addition, JOANN corporate office follow-up was pathetically inadequate with a District Mgr contacting me after having been advised to do so TWICE by his superiors. When he did call he did all of the talking rather than listening to my complaint. In fact, he gave an excuse that the location has issues with "homeless" camps behind the store?!?!?! NOT sure how this was supposed to have excused the poor training of store staff or their rude behavior towards customers! The entire experience with this business location and the alleged management / district personnel was totally bizarre and unprofessional to the extreme. read more

I have shopped here for years! During this difficult time of the Covid-19 it was difficult not being able to go into the store. So ordering on was good. Rarely did I have to wait for a lengthy time for my order. Only once I recently received my materials just shoved into the box without any wrapping or receipts! But they took the golden ticket today!! I ordered on Monday 10 yards of 1/4 inch elastic and yahoo...it came in today!!! They told me it it could take 2 to 3 weeks!! Well, Joann fabrics, I have been dragged through your doors since childhood. I remember going there with my mom when she needed supplies for a lesson (she was a teacher) or if some specialty item was needed for mending. My mom was no crafter, or sewing master, or really handy with creating much of anything, yet somehow I have many memories of visiting good old Joann's. Incidentally, my mom's name is also, Joann. This place is one of the closest major craft stores near downtown Portland, short of going to the mall area. It has a vast amount of yarn and fabric. What it often doesn't have (along with many other Portland retail and restaurants) is enough people working. The line is often long and the fabric station has a call button. Joann's is, on most occasions, packed with people and sometimes the shelves aren't well stocked. But, for what seems to be an understaffed store, I guess they are doing pretty well. read more

I have a problem. A fabric problem. I have enough in my stash - I probably could sew enough blankets to keep us all warm in the Maine winters and still have some scraps to spare the VonTrapps from making clothing from their drapes. If you are a crafter - it is a good go to. If you plan on crafting or DIY-ing often, get on their mailers. They will have good coupons, and they will let you use more than one at check out. Watch for them, and you can get a good deal. At the cutting counter, take a number, deli counter style. If you don't, you will make the regulars holding several bolts cranky when you try to cut the line. Respect the process people! Most of the staff there has been very friendly - and they often are crafters too. One downside - they are understaffed, and it's a big store. It is a problem that most nationwide chains have, and having worked in that kind of retail environment, I get it. The stores are only given so much of a budget to use for payroll, and service suffers when they are understaffed. Do not take it out on the staff of the store. They are mostly lovely people, and be patient. I enjoy going there - because I want to make all the things. If you are new to the crafting world, it can be fun. It is a good idea to go with a list of things you need, because otherwise you will come out with items that looked shiny and cool - but not sure when you are going to use them. I still have a wood burner waiting to be used..... cause clearly, that is going to happen soon. read more

Well that was a challenge. This is a very large store. I went many aisles into the store before I found any employees at all. Finally had to be forceful to get the attention of an employee just to ask where the product was I was looking for. She pointed, said 'go that way, look for the T-shirts you'll find it.' Up and down several aisles later, I came back to the fabric cutting area to interrupt another gal to ask again where the product was. She gave the same answer, more politely but still the same answer. I said 'here's the problem I can't find the T-shirts', so telling me to look where the T-shirts are isn't helping me. The first girl came back at that point and said in a quite annoyed tone 'Where the T-shirts are'. Same response from me elicited her saying 'follow me' wherein she took off with such speed I couldn't find her once I'd rounded the desk. Altogether I was bummed out. With that though I think it was specific to there not being a staff member on hand available to help me, and then the staff member that I got was in a bad mood or at least treated me like a pain in her rear! The store really has an amazing selection of all things fabric, sewing, and crafting. Additionally it is very conveniently located in a plaza near the highway. read more

I just had the best customer service at Joanne Fabrics! While I may not be a crafter, I find myself dragged here from time to time by my crafty daughter. The staff here is always patient and enthusiastic to hear what she is working on, and often times offer advice that ends up saving her a lot of time and lost effort. I have to be honest. They do have a decent selection of fabrics, but not as much as Mardens in Scarborough does. I feel like this shouldn't be the case. So I really only go here to get expensive fabric when I can get it on sale. read more

The worst Jo-Ann in the state of Maine. I run an Etsy shop where people are able to custom pick the fabrics they want me to sew that are available at the store and I stop by once or twice a week and easily spend over $500 purchasing fabric for my customers. I went to this Jo-Ann because the one in topsham didn't have some of the fabric I needed, and I wish I had just ordered online instead. When I went to the fabric counter to get my fabric cut the lady working (Renee) looked at me like I was crazy and told me to grab a number even though there was nobody else in line. When I get my fabric cut often times multiple customers will want the same print, so I have whoever is cutting the fabric make different cuts for me so I don't have to waste my time measuring it out and doing it myself. Renee told me that she isn't able to cut fabric into multiple pieces (every other Jo-Ann I have ever been to has no problem doing it). While I was handing her the fabrics to tell her how much I needed I was looking at my phone because I obviously didn't remember how much of each fabric I needed, and she looked at me and yelled "UHHH WHAT ARE YOU EVEN LOOKING AT HAHAHA" and I told her that I'm trying to add up the amounts I need in my head since she is apparently incapable of cutting fabric into separate amounts. When somebody else got behind me in line she looked at them and said "sorry this is gonna take forever" and she called somebody else up to the fabric counter. When she was all done cutting my fabric she told me that next time i shouldn't buy so much fabric, because now she has to waste the rest of her day putting it back on the shelf. I don't get why she would be so angry when I'm literally spending over $500 at the store but okay. Never going to this Jo-Ann again, this employee has zero work ethic and won't make a simple adjustment for a customer which would take less than 1 minute. read more
