They got karate lessons from David Vincent, went on fun field trips: Young Chef's Academy, Jazzercise studio, New Orleans Aquarium - and were transported in luxurious charter buses. The camp took place was at Jefferson United Methodist Church, which has ample space for all the campers and a beautiful playground for them to play on. The director, Ms. Sarah, had fun projects for the to work on lead by camp counselors. She received two camp t-shirts and we even to to attend a talent show put on by the group at the end of each week. She met new friends and made some unforgettable memories! The camp was so well-organized and the kids were entertained all day. They also encouraged the kids to be reading this summer by providing fun incentives. I did not have these fun summer camps to attend as a child, so I was so thrilled to get her into a variety of camps this summer. I am a huge advocate of keeping kids busy and active. Sitting, playing video games and watching TV all summer gets them nowhere! First, I was told multiple times staff would be required to be 18+ but I could see on the first day that was a lie as they're all young and inexperienced -- and it showed. Communication was a real issue: when I asked counselors how my daughter's day went, I was repeatedly told they weren't allowed to tell me. She was injured multiple times with no call home, and when I asked how she got a bruise, I got no answer. But I did get a call when she walked to the bathroom without checking in first. The camp's own "levels of support" guide seems to reflect this: a tantrum warrants a call, but a bloody injury apparently doesn't. Food was also rough, breakfast was often just powdered donuts, and "nachos" were literally a bag of Doritos with cheese dumped on top. They literally just give the kids sugar all day. Staff tone was often passive-aggressive including the director. Overall for over $200 a week I expected better. This camp is pure ghetto and I don't recommend.

Fraziers' Homestead is a wonderful spot! We went during December, and honestly, the cold weather made it perfect (otherwise I'd be profusely sweating while riding). Our guide was friendly and constantly checked in on us and our horses to make sure we were getting the most from our trail ride. We even saw the owner and shared a good laugh about the "intricacies" of staying on top of the horse. The trail was pretty with bushes and trees filling the space and even a portion where we saw the rest of their horses- I miss it! My only critique would be that the trail ride, for me, was not as long as I would have liked. To be fair, though, I could ride alllll day. This place is great because once you're finished with your trail, you get to go back to their arena and practice riding and/or trotting some more. If you're curious about $$$, I would have no problem paying again. It was 3 of us, and I want to say it was about ~$67/person not including tip. I definitely hope to go back soon and who knows- maybe even get the same horse :).

I had never heard of this place until my nephew had a birthday party here. It sounded kind of like it would be boring, but it was so much fun! The kids all were given a specific project to build in small groups. One of the most popular one was a suspended track that was built out of nothing but Legos. Once the track was built each child was given a car and they spent a good amount of time racing the cars down the track. The party was hosted by two employees and they basically took care of everything. They entertained the kids with games, cut and handed out the cake and cleaned up afterwards. Speaking of the cake...it's not included in any of the party packages so you have to bring that in yourself in addition to all of the paper products and drinks. They also sell lots of Lego products for boys and girls. It was fun and I'd consider having a birthday party here in the future for my own kiddies.

BREC Magnolia Mound: History Summer Camp was one of my daughter's favorite camps! Her first time…read moreattending was the summer of 2016 and she just completed her 2nd go-around during the 2017 camp season. This camp was definitely interesting for her, since we have been to many historical sites around the country. She loves history and as do I, so this camp was very fitting. From what she told me, it was very hands-on with time period craft projects, open hearth cooking sessions, field trips to other Baton Rouge historical sites and of course a tour of the historic house museum. The grounds are beautiful here, so it was a treat for her to get spend a week being here and diving into not only the history of the plantation, but of Baton Rouge itself! The camp is for kids aged 7-years old to 14-years old and ran from 8:30am - 4:30pm. She has already expressed interest on attending for 2 weeks next summer! BREC Summer Camps are such a great way for kids to continue learning during the summer, build friendships with children around the community and of course stay active (and away from electronic devices). Good old-fashioned fun, while enjoying the outdoors and soaking in Louisiana's culture.
