I'm a member at Nest Yoga and have been taking classes with Jody pretty regularly for the last 6 months or so. I knew Jody's work with me was, well, working when I recently found myself in an airport bathroom, mid-clothes change, casually balancing in tree pose without even thinking about it. After just 1 year with Jody I had made more progress in my practice than in my previous 8 years of yoga. Jody is by far the best yoga instructor I've ever had. Before I attended Jody's class at Yoga Mayu I'd been doing yoga regularly for 8 years with 4 different regular instructors (each time I moved I would find an instructor I liked and then stick with the person). I would echo many of the comments made in the reviews below. But the primary reason I feel comfortable making such a strong statement about Jody's instruction is because of the exciting improvement I've seen in my practice. Just one example is my ability to do arm balances. Jody has helped me open my chest and strengthen my abs such that I can very comfortably balance in headstand, on my forearms, or on my hands. Jody's classes helped me improve the strength and flexibility that I needed for these balances without me even knowing that it was happening. I was very surprised when suddenly it was easy for me to get into these poses. And this is the genius of Jody -- she understands how to help her students get from A to B (and all the way to Z) in a comfortable and sustainable way. No other instructor I've had has been nearly as good at doing this. Jody's class has done wonders for my yoga practice, and by extension for my happiness. I'm not a yoga person per say, but I'm a total Jody fanatic. I am a member of Mission Cliffs (Touchstone Climbing gyms) and absolutely prioritize her Wednesday night yoga class. You have to get there like 10-15 minutes before it starts at 7pm because the woman is such a wonderful anomaly of joy coupled with an awesome but gentile workout. I'm in really great climbing shape, and I run regularly, but I often leave work with upper back tightness (like most of us who work on computers) and I'm not as lean and flexible as I'd like to be. I religiously hit up Jody's class because I leave all loose and relaxed, and now in my mid-30s she's gotten me near being able to do splits - something I never before imagined possible (not even as a gymnast in childhood)! You will feel as I do that Jody is a dear friend. Though she'll push you, you'll still love her. And her quotes at the start and her gentle endings leave you feeling like you've really just had a vacation even though you've just worked your ass off. Ahhh, where to start? Jody Hahn, how delightful it is to have you in my life. Never would I have believed it if you had told me I would one day look forward to rising before the sun came up, so fancy me pleasantly surprised when I found myself with said emotions upon discovering Jody's 7:30am Mission Cliff classes. Her warmth, enthusiasm, wisdom, and exquisite instruction make for a consistently fantastic yoga experience that quickly ease the memories of those harsh, dark mornings. I am lucky to have developed a connection with Jody off the mat, as well. Last spring I contacted her about low-cost yoga resources for my nonprofit when we were going through a particularly challenging time, and she offered to teach a regular class for our staff pro-bono. It was such a meaningful, not to mention useful, gift to us at a critical time and perfectly illustrated her genuine embodiment of the ideals at the practice's core. Jody remembers her students' names and hobbies and favorite spots in the studio. She will micro-adjust your hip flexer at that precise moment so your muscles work in ways you never thought they could. Trust me, believe her. She knows where to take you - body, mind, and spirit - and, like all the best teachers, she'll get you there in such a way you'll realize you always knew how. You have never experienced a well-balanced approach like this. Jody is not your typical yoga instructor. But then again, who is? Each teacher has different backgrounds of study be it Hatha, Ashtanga or Iyengar. Therefore, that style of yoga the person comes from will be reflected in instruction. And then? Then there's Jody who brings a wonderful method of instruction that allows people to discover their strengths. She closes her classes with "Balancing, body, mind and spirit," and I really think that's the essence of what is accomplished in each class I have with her. So with Jody you will learn to abandon negative judgments you may bring to the mat with you--if you have them. For me, yoga is about the only time I'm not thinking about worrying or myself. I'm just trying to get my body to do or go where it can. She's not preachy. But, she's very apt to share her insights and it gives the class balance. Jody is different. She allows me (more like "invites me") to challenge myself--especially when it comes to doing inversions. I always tell myself, "give it the ol' college try." So, I am one of those students in her classes who use blocks to get to where I need to be to have proper alignment and Jody is very nonjudgmental. She invites everyone to take a playful approach. Pretty soon, you're doing inversions or head stands or arm balances you thought you could never accomplish. Just stay in the moment and you'll have so much fun. Not only will you be sore the next day (not that being sore is the goal of yoga) from doing a rigorous Vinyasa class, you will still be thinking of all the jokes she cracks. You'll sit and wonder why you're not having coffee with her or traveling to parts unknown with her. She's refreshing. She takes the dourness of yoga some people practice and puts fun in. If you want to catch her in the mornings, she faithfully teaches a wonderful 7:30 Tues/Thursday hour long class at Mission Cliffs. She is there rain or shine and I love her discipline and quotes of the week. I even like the music she plays too. I take her Tuesdays and Thursday classes frequently. And, over the course of the two years I've been seeing Jody, I've noticed that her warm personality brings a room of people together. You can also catch her at Yoga Mayu (I've had one class with her there) and she's at the wonderful International Orange on Friday mornings. I would recommend anyone new to yoga practice to have a one on one with her and then go to her classes! I would also recommend going to more than just one of Jody's classes before doing a review--it's the same for dining in restaurants, right? Try a class/dish more than once. I love Jody and her teaching. Her flow classes are for me the perfect mix of athleticism and energy with thoughtfulness and awareness. I am not a fan of gym-yoga nor uber-mumbo-jumbo-spirit yoga, BUT I do love to get in a good workout, feel my muscles activate, and leave feeling all zen with a clear head. Having Jody in my life is a gift that keeps on giving. Her style is welcoming and inspiring.
