I am new member of Left Coast Power Yoga. I've been really impressed with the quality and variety of classes. All of the instructors are skilled, fun, and friendly. There is a huge variety of skill levels and body types in every class, so don't be intimidated if you're a beginner. I have a back injury and have had to modify my practice a lot, but I still feel very welcome here, and the instructors are always giving me helpful tips. The studios are nicely heated to give your body that extra flexibility but not too hot. I'm very glad I signed up. read more

The hours and location are ideal. Its amazing how I can look for a class last minute and there is always something readily available. I have consistently been able to show up 1 minute before the class starts and get into the class. The teachers are all good and somehow on the same page with consistency but also unique and thoughtful. I like the short (1 hour) format so it doesn't take over my whole day. I dont really like the heat, but I don't notice so much anymore. I think I have a reaction to this studio. when I walk in the door, I start sweating. read more

Great vibes here. Excellent teachers who are generous with their knowledge, create a great experience and seem to genuinely enjoy being part of the studio. Each of them seem to bring their own creativity in a way that feels smooth and refreshing yet not foreign. Why I like that: you will not feel like a yoga robot. Only thing to watch out for -- not much space up front nor inside. But I like to think that makes the vibe more authentic and less focused on typical yoga studio retail salesy stuff. read more

I went to eight classes here while my regular workout place was closed for Christmas. This place is clean, well-run, uses Mind Body Connect, and they have good instructors. I appreciated Judy, Lael, Rachel, Aya and Julia's guidance. If you're looking to try yoga, this is a good place to start. I especially liked the slightly squishy floors; I've had pain in my palms before. This helped. I can't be super effusive about it: I just don't love yoga. It's much too serious. UPDATE: Every teacher here is amazing and offers their unique energy to their instruction. They are experts in the knowledge of how to develop the body and alignment. I love Sterling's classes. He has the best energy and attitude. I can't help going away feeling spiritually uplifted. He is thoughtful in his lessons and greatly considers individual needs, such as with my sensitive shoulders. I love his variety of music and his enthusiasm for life. I have attended Jessie's class twice, and I love how she so smoothly guides us through the movements, accompanied by a calm indian type music. I don't know if its because she is an engineer, but something about her instruction is very seamless, calm and methodical. So when I'm in that type of mood, I enjoy her class. I like how she incorporates the spiritual insights to yoga, and how to apply it to everyday life. I have also attended Tony's Inversion class as well as some of his workshops. He is just so savvy about how to position the body. Tonight I could not figure out how to go easily into a tripod headstand. Immediately he spotted that my arms were too wide apart and told me how to position them. Then voila!, like magic, I was able to hoist my rump and legs above my head. My son attended with me this evening, and he enjoyed the practice and Tony helped him understand how to get into the positions correctly. I love Bridgett's classes. She's such a sweety! Bridget is very in tune making sure that the student's are aligning their bodies correctly in the various positions. She has noticed that my knees are a bit cockeyed and brings it to my attention to position my legs right to prevent further knee problems. I had always wondered why I was prone to knee pain throughout my life. Bridget also gives her spiritual insights that she has gained from yoga, which I value. Oh, and she gives these awesome little power massages to every student when we are in savasana. Whitney has such great energy. I enjoy as well how she incorporates during her instruction yoga as a metaphor to daily life. Like all the teacher's, she is so pleasant and excited about teaching yoga. If I ever have a question after class, she has taken the time to explain or demonstrate positions. I brought my 21 year old cousin Jessica to her class. My cousin had never taken a yoga class before. She loved Whitney's approach and her cool and relaxed way of giving directions. Jessica is now excited about yoga. Rachel is always so upbeat and eager to teach. She is genuine in her enthusiasm, again, as are all the teacher's at LCPY. She will take time to demonstrate positions. She takes great care to insure that the studio is always clean and their are plenty of towels and mats. I like that Rachel organizes workshops and community building events. Seriously, she is amazing how to orchestrates all that goes into LCPY. Thank you, Rachel, for bringing this studio to the community. Occasionally I bring my 10 year old, geared up with a big water bottle. He enjoys yoga practice. From our experience, I would say it can be potentially a good fit for a calm focused child that can take instruction and who has the insight to listen to his body and go into child pose when they are tired. This is LCPY's first studio in Oakland, and my favorite. There's a fantastic energy in this tight space, and it's run with by friendly staff who are often teachers themselves. Started going here about 2 months ago! Great experience with all the teachers. Only thing I don't like is when they have you do semi circle I prefer rows & not looking at others as I find it distracting & it makes you have to be much closer to others which is annoying to constantly have to move on ur may to not hit the person next to you. (I could be the only person this bothers lol) Also don't like when they have the fans on - specifically chose this place cuz it's supposed to be heated & would love it if it was 5-10 degrees warmer every time. But overall great spot. Slower & easier than corepower but still a workout. Everyone is super nice & very chill. Highly recommend! read more

I just moved back into the neighborhood recently and after years of playing competitive high impact sports in college (and with a little encouragement from some fellow yogi friends) I decided it was time for a change so I started looking into a couple yoga studios around the area and happened to stumble on the 3 class/25$ deal. After the first class this week which Claire taught I was hooked. I had a pretty bad shoulder injury that never fully recovered last year, but she really took that into consideration when we were practicing certain poses. I couldn't wait for the next class so I signed up for the following morning taught by Lael. Before this week I had zero experience with yoga, but both instructors were highly encouraging and offered challenges in different ways. They also took the time to correct my posture without ever coming off as patronizing. I quickly learned this practice is much more than simply physical exercise. You learn to tune in and listen to your body, focus, and let go of all that outside noise and stress. I definitely can't wait to learn more! Good to try out for beginners! read more

You know how some yoga teachers will say "do whatever feels good for YOUR body" and then they proceed to demo the full expression of a tricky pose right in front of your mat, sighing contentedly as if bending into that twisty pretzel position (that I could not have even achieved when I was a toddler) was the easiest part of their day? Well, that doesn't happen in Rachel's classes, or Sterling's classes, or Whitney's classes (and those are just the teachers I have experienced there so far). They really mean it when they say "do what feels good for you!" By offering ample modifications (both easier and harder) and choosing their loving wording carefully, they have a way of making you feel comfortable and blissful whether you're taking a 15 minute child's pose or amping up the core work or doing a handstand. I think about this every time I take one of their classes, and I really appreciate that LCPY has such amazing teachers. If you want to take a class from a yoga teacher who is super passionate about yoga, check out Whitney's class. I've known her for a few years as a yoga teacher, and I'm always blown away with the strength of her yoga philosophy. Even though she is an asana rockstar herself, and teaches a physically challenging class, she always manages to interweave philosophical yoga lessons in a kind and playful manner. Her alignment cues are creative and precise as well, and as a chiropractor, it's comforting for me to know that everyone in the class is being guided safely and lovingly. read more

It is hard to overstate how much I love this studio. The space is super clean and airy, with amazing, lightly padded floors. (The floor, with a slight give to it, makes me way braver when it comes to trying an arm balance or inversion!) The teachers each have varied approaches, so every class feels different. However, all of the instructors are gifted at explaining both the basic elements of a pose and the little nuances which can make such a big difference. I seriously look forward to learning from every single one of them, they are all wonderful. I was brand new to yoga when I started at Left Coast two years ago. It has become such a wonderful, surprising new part of my life. I am so grateful to have found such a supportive and welcoming place to learn about yoga. I love, love, love this yoga studio. The teachers are friendly and approachable (and remember my kind of difficult name, which is worth a million gold stars in my book). I originally went a few times after they first opened last year then slacked off...and now I'm trying to make up for lost time! All the teachers are great, in different ways. Sterling's class was so fun and had great music, Inbal's beginner's class was a nice way to ease back into power yoga after a long hiatus, and I also really enjoyed Whitney and Jessie's classes. My favorite class so far is Monday sunrise yoga with Bridget, who is great at helping with alignment. Plus it's nice to get some yoga in pre-work. I also love Rachel's classes: her instruction style is really fun and her classes overall are so calming even while you're challenging yourself. Basically you should just try this studio. Great atmosphere and great people. read more

I love LCPY! I've been attending Bridget's and Rachel's classes regularly since July. Both are fantastic instructors who keep a great pace but create space and time to deepen poses and practice. 7am Monday with Bridget is a great way to start the week and I really enjoy 6 pm Wednesday with Rachel for a mid-week pick-me-up. The studio is a great intimate size, the temperature is warm enough to get loose and sweat but not too hot. It is always nice and clean and everyone is friendly. read more

I was sucked into the studio after taking Rachel's Yoga in the Park session. Let me sidebar about Yoga in the Park: not only is it amazing and life-affirming to do yoga on the grass in the sun to the sound of birds (and kids and homeless people and dogs), it's also a great way to sample the different styles of yoga instructors in the East Bay. I was struck by Rachel's class because of two things: it was one of the best yoga sequences I'd practiced in a loooong time (and this includes paid classes, not just park freebies), and she played really great music. The studio is near Lake Merritt, but I make the drive from North Oakland because it's the yoga destination I've been hankering for: the staff are really genuine and authentic -- not fake nice, not aloof. The studio - I have to say it - has really great energy. It's small but approachable. It's not trying too hard but respects who it is. But here is the magic reason that I can't explain: the room is lined with full length mirrors and they are the most hot-reflection and affirmation-making mirrors around. I am never the thinnest in the class, my outfits are always kind of uninspired, and I don't usually react to mirrors this way but here, I find myself thinking 'ooh, good form. you look GOOOD.' So if nothing else, come to class so you can send and receive some sugar from the mirror. read more

I have gone a few times at various points of in the day and every teacher is wonderful. It is cozy and welcoming. At first, I was hesitant to try the heated classes but I finally gave in. The temperature was very comfortable. I always feel refreshed after each class. I would highly recommend this studio for your practice! read more

I was looking for a heated room yoga class but not necessarily a hot yoga studio (I have one that I like but don't always like to travel to it), I also wanted a place that was convenient to my home and Left Coast Power Yoga fit the bill. There are other Yoga Studios near that area which I have tried and also enjoy, but I have to say the pricing is ridiculous which is another reason why I tried LCPY (they are about 3-5 dollars cheaper than nearby studios) The studio is small which results in a level of attention and posture correction that I as someone who lifts weights frequently (crossfit), runs and participates in other physical activity really needs. The studio is very clean, the music that's played during classes is excellent, and I found the instructors not to talk too much, or be overly "new agey" (sorry that's just not my thing). Another bonus are the after work class selection the 5pm for those who get off work early is PERFECT!! If you need a little more hands on attention, want a heated room so that you're able to get deeper into postures, like a smaller class size then LCPY is for you . read more

My new favorite neighborhood yoga studio! I am so grateful for this super cozy, super positive space, and for all its wonderful teachers. I love both locations--the Grand one is the smaller but feels like home, and the Uptown location is beautiful and has showers. I like a yoga practice with varied flow and at least some sort of spiritual element and pranayama practice but also really challenging and sweaty! I am so glad I finally tried this studio because it really satisfies all my needs. You sweat, you build your core, you chant Oms, you do breath work, you get satisfying Savasanas, etc. All the teachers are really talented with different styles, and no class is ever the same. I love all my teachers! Whitney is master of improv and will take any request and incorporate it into your class. She will work your core like you wouldn't believe, plus she's really funny. Lael is one of those sweethearts with not a mean bone in her, but oh man, she will make you sweat! (But you can never get mad at her because she's so sweet--haha!) Adam has a very grounding energy and offers an elegant practice in a comforting environment that focuses on breathing. Sterling is a sweetheart, and he will be your best friend in five seconds. If you're feeling down, go to his class, and you'll feel better about yourself instantly. The owner Rachel is one of my favorite teachers. She trained at Laughing Lotus and is a talented yogini. Her class combines everything I need. The great thing is, they have a great rapport with one another. I think that adds to the warmth of the place. I will focus on Whitney Walsh's classes. Knowing that she is teaching (or subbing) is always exciting, because I know I'll always learn something new in her class. She has the gift of a teacher, not just an instructor. An instructor shows you the poses, but Whitney tells you why you do the poses and how they affect your mind and body. You can tell that she takes great pride in her craft because she is always researching new information about that art form. Then she brings her findings to the mat and shares it with the class. She brings an incredible intellectual side to the yoga mat that none of the other instructors there do. I appreciate this because I always leave her class knowing not only that my body got a workout, but that my knowledge of yoga was deepened. I find security in knowing that she fervently studies her passion. Another quality that makes Whitney an outstanding instructor is her ability to give sequence direction at an understandable speed. Say we are in downward dog. She will have told us the next two sequences just so we can take our time and move with our own breath. Many times in some other classes the instructor will say "now exhale" and tell us a pose but wait way to long to tell us the next pose by which time we've already inhaled and broken our flow. She has this timing and technique down, and I'm so thankful for that. Last but not least, Whitney is simply inspirational. Translation ... Whitney is a beast at yoga. Her core is rock solid! She's very graceful and strong. When she demonstrates challenging poses with ease (or even when she acknowledges her own weaknesses) it inspires me to want to continue to push my own body beyond what my mind thinks it can handle. If you want to experience a class that will work your core and alignment, where you will sweat but won't be swimming in a puddle of sweat on your mat, where you're knowledge of yoga will be improved, where you'll be challenged to be very aware of what your body is saying and where you'll definitely smile and enjoy yourself ... then hit up Whitney's classes. read more

I love LCPY!!! After having a baby, gaining baby weight, and going through who knows what with my body and emotions... I found my sanity here! I had never been too into yoga in the past, although I always wanted to. I decided to give it a try, and sign up for the $20 trial, and i have been going 6 months now. The first thing that made me know it was the right place was how amazing all of the teachers are. They are so great at what they do - in a way that does not make you feel like you shouldn't be there because you are not a great yogi. Every teacher made me comfortable as a beginner, and encourages me to get better. I especially love Rachel - i look forward to her classes every week, and it is my sanctuary. I recently moved from Berkeley to Lake Merritt. I was sad to leave my beloved Green Yogi, and relieved to find a studio so close to my home. I've been to five classes and have loved the instruction. The classes are vigorous, but teachers offer modifications so it feels personalized and accessible to multiple levels. The only difficult adjustment for me has been getting used to practicing facing mirrors! The space is narrow and doesn't get a lot of natural light, so they are really necessary, though. Looking forward to continuing my practice here. read more

I went on a yoga retreat with Rachel, Zach, and Sterling in Fall 2015 and had a blast. I went alone and felt totally welcomed into the community of fun-loving yogis in attendance. The food was delicious, the camp n sons site was lovely, social time was filled with laughter and sweet conversations, and the yoga was great too. I occasionally visit the studio for class on the weekends. I haven't tried all the teachers yet but I've had great experiences with Rachel, Judy, Jessie, Shirley, and Aya. The Grand Ave studio gets nice and toasty and the classes are small enough where teachers can provide personal attention. The wall mirror took me by surprise at first, but now I enjoy having it as a tool to check my alignment. Also need to give a thumbs up for customer service. I purchased a pack of classes that expired and Rachel (the owner) responded to my email and allowed me to pay a $10 fee to extend the expiration date by three months. read more

So happy I found a new studio in Oakland that is heated. The studio is small so it gets pretty packed, especially in the winter time. Make sure you come by early to save your spot (although there's nothing like a packed yoga studio to build a solid community). The instructors are nice, friendly and knowledgeable. Also loving the tiffany blue paint - it is soothing and calming :) They offer a $20 trial which is totally worth it. read more

I'm so in love! I've been doing yoga for about 10 years, but only got into power yoga a few years ago. I've never found a studio that grew on me as fast as this one has -- I'm addicted! (And this is coming from someone who historically hates the heat!) This place is very similar to Groove in Berkeley, but I will say that one huge leg up Left Coast has on Groove is that each and every one of their teachers here are super experienced and awesome. Also, there are less teachers, making it a more personal/intimate setting for your practice. I quickly used up my 10 class groupon and opted for the monthly autopay -- it's pricey but so worth it! It's hard to describe the high level gratitude I have for this studio. I've been practicing yoga since 2003, I've done ashtanga, hatha, jivamukti, vinyasa, power, kundalini and even 500hr Iyengar yoga teacher training; I've worked at four Wanderlust festivals, five bhakti fests-had classes from many well known yoga teachers and so I feel qualified to say that this studio has some of the best teachers around. I was struggling to find inspiration and challenge in my practice-then I took a rocket yoga class at LCPY with Lyz. It's been a spiritual awakening for me- I've been rocketed into another yoga dimension and it feels so good to suck at yoga again! read more

I've been going to this studio since they opened. The friendly, cool vibe of the studio and the instructors keeps me coming back. The location itself is cute, clean and white, providing a very calm ambiance. Since it is a small studio, come early to get a space that you like, either in front looking at the mirror or at the back, touching the wall. The equipment, blocs, matts, blankets, etc. are in very good condition. Almost all classes are heated to increase the workout and sweat a bit, not forgetting background chill music which helps with the flow of the vinyasa. I think what makes the studio memorable and enjoyable is their instructors. Starting with Rachel, the owner, her classes are very didactic, explaining challenging asanas to beginner yogis. She finishes her classes with a small massage on your neck or feet to release any stress left. Sterling is another great instructor, you will have a lot of fun in his classes, since he knows how to make you smile. Left coast also offers challenges, retreats and workshops. I wish they had more early classes available, it has been difficult to combine their schedule with my work schedule. read more
