We had been coming to Goldfish Swim School in Gaithersburg for about two years with both of our daughters. There are definitely positive things about this school: a warm pool, a bright and kid-friendly environment, and some instructors who are kind and patient. My children truly loved the water and looked forward to their lessons. However, our experience as a family ended on a very disappointing note. My younger daughter is a playful, energetic six-year-old. She loves to splash, move, and interact with people in the water. Instead of speaking with me about any concerns (I was present at every class), the management decided to remove her from the program, describing her behavior as "aggressive" toward an adult instructor. As a parent and as someone who watched every lesson, I strongly disagree with this interpretation. What I saw was normal, emotional child behavior that could have been redirected by a more experienced teacher. No one approached me during class, no one asked to talk, and there was no warning or attempt to work together. The first and only conversation was an email informing me that she would no longer be allowed to attend. This decision was made right before Thanksgiving, turning what should have been a peaceful family holiday into a very stressful and emotional situation for us. I had to sit down with my six-year-old and explain why she suddenly couldn't go back to the place she loved. Since I cannot take my children to different schools and schedules, I ultimately had to withdraw both of my daughters, including the older one who had no behavioral issues at all. In the end, the school lost two long-term students and a loyal family not because we didn't value swimming, but because of how the situation was handled and how little effort was made to find a solution. I believe this program may work well for very calm, highly focused children who easily follow instructions and don't get too excited or distracted. But if your child is more spirited, emotional, playful, has trouble with concentration, or needs a more flexible teaching style, I would strongly recommend you observe a class carefully and ask specific questions about how they handle different types of behavior, how they communicate with parents, and what steps they take before excluding a child. My hope is that the school will learn from this experience, invest in more training for staff, and improve communication with families. Children deserve understanding, not exclusion -- and parents deserve to be part of the conversation before such drastic decisions are made.

I loved the video monitors and the fact that the pools were raised so I could be there watching from the side with my one year old without worrying about her falling in. I didn't need to get in the pool. Rich was an excellent coach. He had unending patience with my child (can I borrow some of that?!) and by the end of the swim lesson she had made a lot of progress. She trusted him quickly and laughed a lot. When we left she said 'I loved it!' Can't wait to go back. Shower facilities were excellent. They have a machine that fast dries your swim suit. We are obviously not competitive swimmers, but the technology available there is impressive. Even as an outsider, I can understand the benefits of having video monitors to replay your stroke and compare it to that of other swimmers while your coach talks you through it. I don't know of any other swim facilities like this in Montgomery County, MD.

The pool size is smaller, as are the class sizes and this helps with comfort level. The staff are exceptional, and the trainers are attentive to each child, though I do wish they would communicate updates to the parents more frequently. As for the location itself, it is very clean and well kept. The waiting area has lots of toys, tables, activity items for kids while they wait for class to start. There are benches for parents to sit and observe the class sessions. The locker room is large, spacious, and again well kept and clean. There are plenty of showers. I do wish they had one more bathing suite dryer though. If you are the parent of a young child in the Montgomery Village area I highly recommended Safesplash. There are a few areas that need improvement, some of which I listed (more bathing suite dryers, more communication post class with instructors), but I am happy to give this business five stars!

I didn't want to seem rude and make people self conscious by taking pictures with them in it, specially when in bathing suits and lots of young children. With that said, this outdoor pool is beautiful! The parking space is ample. So many places to park. The surrounding area is covered by trees and other outdoor activities including a baseball diamond/field and a very nice skate park. Upon entering, there is a small fee to get in daily. I believe residents receive discount to and there are passes available. As soon as we entered the swimming area, I was really impressed! Plenty of spaces to sit. In the shade, sun, a bit further away, many options. There is a shallow pool with lots of fun activities and slides for the young kids. That pool is 1FT deep and it's perfect for families. There's another pool with a basketball game another cool slide and zip tie pool plunge. On the far right there's an area with the long, tall slides ! These are new and look so fun. A bit further behind is a lap pool with diving boards. Unfortunately we came on a day with poor air quality and they had to close early. But we did enjoy 2 hours worth of swimming. There is an additional indoor pool and we were encouraged to swim there. We decided to go home. There's a confession stand that we didn't get to try and I haven't seen the fitness center yet. There was a camp with hundreds and hundreds of children running around. They didn't all listen to the lifeguards. There were no chairs available -- that's on us, we should have come at opening, but it was wildly overcrowded and then another camp with even younger children arrived. My kids are young teen/tween age and excellent swimmers but it's more crowded than a Great Wolf Lodge on a holiday with a lot less supervision. I felt awful for the lifeguards. We'll likely come back on a weekend because the facilities are great but the amount of children vs adults/older teens is honestly hard to imagine and felt very stressful.

Played in many flag football leagues in The DMV and this league is the worst. A penalty in one game will be a fair play in the next game with the same ref. Some refs are also old players who favor some teams and dislike other teams from past games they played in. They don't see illegal moves or check for pockets; someone is injured every season with at least a concussion every year. A little bit of rain will postpone a day of games with less than an hour notice; bad for us who need to travel far and fight the travel to Rockville. This is a social league and we thought we would have fun. Weeknights seem to be the place to be with friends and family. Not recommending the weekend leagues for little ones due to the language, drinking, partying, and fights. One star for the commissioner who at least listens.

It's amazing their logic. One week it will start to downpour 10 minutes before the first game which we have to just push through. Ok fine, but 2 weeks later it will rain on Tuesday before a weekend game and they will call it off by Wednesday night. Then the weekend comes around and it's 82 degrees, bright and sunny, but the games were already cancelled. The commissioner doesn't care about anything but the money. The league has been going downhill for a while from what I hear. This is only my third season and I steadily see a decline. It's hard to plan family vacations or anything based upon the schedule given when you sign up. One season my team signed up, but had to wait a whole month after registration was supposed to end for the season to start. The start of the seasons changes with no notices, games change with short notice, rules are just made up as they go with certain refs but it seems like the only thing that doesn't change is how much team/individual fees are. I will be encouraging my team to leave this league for good and join NEXX-Level or FXA, which are also in the area.
