We stumbled upon Traveling J's at the 2nd Annual All Hallow's Flea and couldn't resist. With two…read morefood truck options--burgers (always a solid standby) or Middle Eastern fusion--we decided to go for the more adventurous choice. Best decision of the day. Even with the huge crowd, Traveling J's was running like a well-oiled machine. Two people--just a chef and a cashier--were absolutely cranking out orders while still keeping the line moving fast. Impressive! We narrowed our choices down to two items to split - Gourmet Grilled Cheese + Garlic Cilantro Fries (upgrade) and Hummus with carrots & cucumbers. Add two cold drinks and our total came to $28.62. Not bad considering the generous portions. When we opened our to-go boxes, we were seriously impressed. The hummus was smooth and creamy, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with spices. The fries were crispy (not soggy!) with just the right kick of garlic and cilantro. And the grilled cheese? Perfectly toasted, melty, and stuffed with sweet, crispy bacon. Cheese was oozing, bread was golden, and it was everything a grilled cheese should be--and then some. The portions were more than enough for two hungry adults, and everything tasted fresh and flavorful. I even made sure to compliment the chef--he looked like he'd been hustling nonstop to keep up with the crowd, and it showed in the quality. Next time, I've got my eye on their fried Halloumi cheese. It looked AMAZING coming out of that truck. Bottom line: Fresh, flavorful, filling, and run by a hardworking duo who know what they're doing. Traveling J's is officially on my "must-eat-again" list.

At $2.50 each for the original plain ones, they're a LOT cheaper than most other hot pretzels. And they're SOOO good! I bought 4 so I could take them home and freeze them.

Their menu offers: the Regular (salt & butter), Cinnamon Sugar, Garlic & Herb, and Sour Cream & Onion. On our recent visit, they added Parmesan and a Hot Dog Pretzel. They also have dips (homemade cheese sauce, homestyle sweet mustard, and cream cheese (have to specially ask for this)), and beverages (Fresh Squeezed Lemonade, Southern Brewed Sweet Iced Tea, bottled water, and sodas). This time, we ordered: +The Regular +the Cinnamon Sugar +Garlic & Herb +Homemade Cheese Sauce +Cream Cheese Frosting Note that the sauces are good for almost 1 of the pretzels; the pretzels are larger than normal, so you may need about 2 sauces per pretzel, if you're a scooper. There was a huge line, so we thought we would receive hot pretzels; unfortunately, they were just all room temperature and seemed to have been prepped ahead of time. Note that this is a popular stopping point for tour buses, so you may be standing and waiting in line for about 40+ minutes. Staff is friendly. This place is cash only, and there is no ATM on-site (in or outside of the Bakeshop) - there is a local bank a little less than two miles down the road, though. Plenty of parking for both tour buses, trucks, and smaller vehicles. There are also covered seats as well as a cute animal farm of goats and fluffy chickens to feed. +lukewarm pretzels +cash only! +located in the lot of Bird-in-Hand Bakeshop +plenty of parking

On our way back from a trip to NC and up to MA, we decided to stop in Lancaster for some lunch and…read moreshopping. My husband and I looked for the best BBQ places in the area and landed on The BBQ Barn. A small and cute little barn sits in the corner of the plaza (on the right of Target). We ordered chicken and rib dinners with an extra pulled pork sandwich (we ordered way too much but needed to try it all!!). Dinner plates come with Cole slaw, a dinner roll, potatoes, and a whoopie pie. There is seating outside. We both agreed that the chicken may have been the best we have ever had. It was seasoned so well and perfectly cooked. The ribs came with bbq sauce on the side. There was a line, but service was quick and efficient. The grills are right in front and you can see the cooking happening! Inside the barn, I could see them rolling out fresh pretzels. They also had homemade root beer, which was very good! After we finished eating, I couldn't help but grab a vanilla ice cream cone to share with my dogs. They agree too, best soft serve ice cream we have ever had. Since getting home, we have already talked about how we need to plan a trip back to Lancaster to get more BBQ and explore the area a bit longer.

Drive to the Target just west of the American Music Theatre and head to the far east side of the Target, driving back around the side of the building and the restaurant will be on your right. Watch for small signs directing you to the BBQ Barn. Review: Very good pulled pork sandwiches with lots of meat for a very reasonable price. Full meal is a great deal that includes three small grilled red potatoes, a small coleslaw, roll, whoopie pie, and drink for $12.50-$14.00 depending on your meat and beverage choice. They sell "homemade" root beer that I tried and it was good and tasted like the original drove in A&W root beer except it lacked carbonation. We had a sandwich plus one full meal for about $20 and left a small tip. Note that this is a casual place with outdoor seating only, similar to a food truck. Thankfully the picnic table seating is mostly in the shade. I do recommend this place for a quick lunch or dinner and noticed local Amish eating there while we had lunch. today.
