I just wanted to thank her and share this experience with others so that others like me feel easy to at least try it out instead of suffering through it. She is not only a skillful and knowledgeable therapist, but her personality is down to earth, genuinely sweet and kind. She also seems to take a good care of her own health, meditate, and study constantly to keep up to be a good therapist (I cannot listen to a doctor who looks unhealthy and tells me to be healthy, you know?) so that I can talk about both psychological (phobia and stress) issues as well as physical concerns (I do not like psychoanalysts who think every physical symptom comes from psychosomatic symptoms). I was surprised that it did not take much time for me to relax and trust her. I used to have very sever hemophobia (afraid of blood), and I tried all kinds of therapy to get rid of it over many years. I used to faint by just drawing out my blood; CBT and other psychotherapy reduced my symptoms and cognitive fear, but I was still physically shaky whenever I was around blood (even cooking meat was hard). Since I was working in the mental health industry for several years, I've worked with several top psychiatrists who also did psychotherapy, PsyD., counselors, and clinical social workers... I myself had a great psychoanalyst mentor (Ph.D., who went to the same school as Dr. Hanakawa) for 4 years, and I thought I had quite bit of insight. My ex-mentor figured out that my phobia started through some event during my childhood, so she recommended me to find a Japanese speaking psychologist who could do hypno-therapy (She said it is more effective to use the language that I was using as a child). There are many Japanese clinical social workers in NY, but not many Ph.D.s... It would have been fine with other people, but it was a problem for me because I know the difference in their training. Then, one of my friends, who works for a Japanese newspaper company heard good things about her, and introduced me to Dr. Hanakawa. So I went to see her. I am a very scientific thinker, so I must say I was a bit skeptical if this therapy would work or not after trying so many other things. I heard some phobias are innate (such as blood, heights and snakes, etc.), so I thought talking about traumatic views I evidenced (which was not that serious anyway, I thought) would not benefit me as much. Oh, Boy, I'm so glad I was wrong though. She guided me into a meditative state, and took me to my childhood event. It was a totally different experience to see the event from a 5-yr old's eyes, and it gave me a new perspective that I did not have before. We worked on it over a month or so, and I started to feel lighter almost immediately (of course, it put me up and down a bit as I was learning new things about my past that I was not facing, but Dr. Hanakawa was there to support me). One day, I was watching a bloody surgery video as part of CBT exposure therapy technique. I used to push myself to watch them more than 15 minutes, but I always got pale and felt sick. It became easier, and now I can watch them with absolutely no symptoms! She said the speed of therapy is really depending on the patient's condition, type of therapy, and previous exposure to psychotherapy. I assume it was very quick for me because I already had previous therapy experience, had some insights about myself, and meditate regularly (it helps to get hypnotized). So please don't get frustrated if your therapy takes little longer... you will be in good hands! :)

My therapist helped me learn new ways of coping and responding to my thoughts and the world. It was a lot of work, not just going in and talking about your week or discussing your past like with my previous therapists. I had homework to do between sessions, and I had to work to rethink about my values and the way I reacted to myself and others. But my time here changed my life for the better.

yeah this place sucks.. seriously, i went here to see a…read moretherapist. i asked for receipts for insurance reimbursement over and over. i kept switching from one therapist to another hoping i would find someone worthwhile, but they all were really bad. not only that, but when i switched, the old therapist gave me nasty looks. the receptionist sucked too. there was really nothing good about this place. when i tried to explain to one of the therapists that the receptionist was always rude and had kept forgotting my receipts for insurance, she actually said, "maybe she had a bad day." what the hell kinda crap is that? i called my friend who used to practice psychology here. he moved to california, but i asked him about this company, just to get feedback and he said "i haven't heard anything good about that place"..at 225/hour you should get someone helpful and understanding, not this horrible unstable business. i'm going to go to the psychologytoday website and try to find someone better or maybe ask around. yeah, but this was such a waste of time. good luck.

I did find a PAYING job and Dr. Mekles is very supportive and shows real interest. With Dr. Mekles - I'm able to taper my benzodiazepine slowly - with lots of support from the doctor. He's very patient and is very understanding and knowledgeable about withdrawal symptoms. He didn't push me - but prodded me to do this vital step The secretary is very helpful. She answers text messages immediately - to assist with medication renewal requests and appointment changes - when needed. Waste of money, time and energy. Very hurt by the whole experience. We sought care for our daughter…read moreand were misled. The provider did not review the data we submitted, then sent us for further testing that we later realized was repeated testing and ultimately we couldn't use any of the evaluation from NYC Psychiatric Associates for the school meeting (in two days) because it has been deemed invalid because the same testing had been completed four months earlier by the school and due to the time frame was invalid. We sent records from many different sources, and it is now our understanding had they actually reviewed that data the testing they recommended wasn't even warranted. We spent a lot of time and energy on these providers. They are kind, but ultimately careless, not thorough, and incompetent. Ultimately the "results" hurt our case with the school who we have already had many struggles with. What they provided us with was literally not usable and we told them many times what we had hoped to accomplish with that documentation. Now they say "we provided the diagnosis" and dismiss the other reasons we went to them. Justifying everything, and it was expensive. My family invested in it! They did not review all of the testing from other providers, and had they done so it is now our impression they should not of recommended further testing because it was unnecessary. My family feels like we were provided poor guidance, our concerns for our daughter were capitalized on for profit. We requested a refund since the documentation could not be used at the school as we had told them we needed multiple times (even sharing concerns it could not be the same testing multiple times) and I have multiple emails in my inbox in which they justify the quality of their work saying "we have her a diagnosis" - then minimize and deny the validity of the concerns we have posed regarding the entire experience, and they are refusing to refund us. They have offered to revise the documentation, but I have already submitted what they originally sent me to the school. They have lost credibility, and so have we. It has already been dismissed by the school as unusable. The school meeting is tomorrow, and the "magic bullet" we thought we had invested in is a ZERO and a major hit to our bank account. The staff seem very sweet well meaning, but results are NIL. Cold competence that gets results is far better than the lip service we received. They seem as though they genuinely care, but at the end of the day the results did not get us what we needed for our daughter. The staff seemed kind, but the competence simply wasn't there. Reviewing available data is important to the process and *standard in this field and it shocked us the way things have transpired. 100% unprofessional. When we had issues, I had to ask many many times before a supervisor ever even got back to me. A literal nightmare. This has now been a back and forth email for over a week with no refund in sight. I'm sick of this situation, and we are already so stressed addressing things with the school this has just been another problem. They knew we had limited resources walking into this, and we feel used and burnt out and like we have less faith in providers of this caliber than we did when we walked into this situation looking for help. I encourage you to strongly question any of the recommendations they give you and "evaluations" they recommend and whether or not that is even warranted. If you have alternate providers that you trust, I would start there instead. They profited off of a vulnerable child and scared family in out experience... and when they made mistakes, they doubled down. Not a place I would invest in to help my child

I've done Reiki a couple of times before but never felt a huge difference. With Deborah, it was different. During the session, Deborah asked questions to understand my needs and concerns. During the healing session, I yawned a lot (like I was releasing a lot of repressed energy!).
