I was visiting St. Louis from California when my windshield wiper motor died on my BMW. I had purchased the replacement motor and was going to try to install myself, but thought twice about it. The dealerships wouldn't help because I had not bought a BMW OEM motor at over $600 (I bought a 3rd party motor that had an identical spec to the OEM motor for under $200). I contacted Joe's because, honestly, the name sounded like a local shop that wouldn't give me a run around. I was right. The gave me an appointment for that week. I waited in the shop while they installed the motor in under 1.5 hours and was on my way for under $200. So, BMW was going to charge me over $1,000 for parts/labor. If I could give no stars I would. Joes used to be good.... when Ross was there. That is no longer true. I had my car in there to be repaired and it cost me $500+ Then it still wasn't fixed and it cost me $85 For them to tell me everything was fine. After the same error code came up again I took it to Selbert's in Eureka. They fixed the issue and it was the same one that Joes were looking at. It cost me $1600 to get it fixed right. I wasted $500+. I'm thinking of doing them and getting my money back. Don't go there!! They had my car for 4 days the first time and 2 days the second time. Super honest. Local dealership gave me a $1,000 estimate for work they said needed to be done on my sons car. One of this was replacing the "timing belt" I contacted Joe's garage they said to bring it up and they would inspect it before he left for college. All it need was and oil change and the "timing CHAIN" did not need to be replaced. Yep, the dealership suggested I replace the timing belt that did not exist. You would think the dealership would actually know their cars better. I am now taking all my cars to Joe's. read more

I've been taking my cars to Ross at Joe's Garage for...17 years now. I've referred at least 5 other families to JG and they all thank me regularly. I have countless examples of them saving me hundreds of dollars and even not charging for minor things. They recently saved a friend $2500 vs a quote from a dealer. My favorite story was when they fixed a tire for me. They had to take the tire off, plug it, and put the tire back on. I asked how much and Ross said "don't worry about it" I protested and said he had the car on the rack and his mechanics took time to do the work etc. Ross said "ok well how much cash do you have on you?" I looked in my wallet and had $7 cash and showed Ross. He said "well then it'll be $7" lol! Undoubtedly the most honest shop you'll ever find. read more

This place is a joke and a rip off. I have no idea how they have good reviews. My truck had a squeaky belt. They told me it was the idler ($20 part which takes 20 minutes or less to replace) and it would be $100 to replace it. I knew that was a rip off but I said as long as that fixes the squeak do it. On the drive home it starts squeaky again. I called back and was told to come back in. I come back in and have to deal with the biggest jerk ever. He is the overweight guy. Extremely rude and seemed to think that I was in the wrong. He told me I needed a new belt now. That was fine with me but he wanted $20 and told me he wouldn't charge me labor. I said no, you can do it for free. After arguing with him and explaining I paid $100 for an idler to be replaced and was told that would stop the issue he said agreed to do it for free. On the drive home, after a new idler and belt. It started squeaking AGAIN! I didn't bother even calling them. I went to a difference mechanic in Kirkwood and they replaced my "new" belt (it was new) with a better quality belt. The issue was fixed. read more

A few minor hiccups beyond Joe's Garage's control (all Saturn parts are now no longer available at most stores, so ignition had to be bought through a Chevy dealership), my ignition is replaced, and everything is working great. I was concerned that having to get the part through Chevy was really going to drive up the price so much so that I might as well bring it to the dealership, but after paying my bill on Friday, I was very surprised. It cost me about $225. Elco Chevrolet quoted me $400-450 depending on what they were going to need to do (could have been one part, could have been two). I can give plenty of examples of Joe's excellent service since my family has been taking our cars there for 24 years, but for brevity's sake I'll give two. Today, I called and stated my tail light was out and I was hoping to get it taken care of as soon as possible. They said come on in, no problem. With a 15 minute drive time each way, I was back home relaxing in 45 minutes. They only charged me $5. A few years ago, when I was driving my older car, the check engine light came on when I was working, thus I had two young children in my car. Thank goodness I was close to Joe's. They took care of me quickly, efficiently, and kindly. They even offered the kiddos some candy from their personal stash because they were such troopers. They've done minor and major work on multiple cars over the years and I'm always happy. I've always felt like they undercharge, and if they say something is wrong you know it is actually wrong. They aren't out to make easy money off people (especially young women) like many places, including the dealership seem to be. I'm glad to have such a competent, reliable, and accessible small business in my community. I refuse to take my car anywhere else! read more

ONE. MONTH. Joe's Garage had my car for an entire month and did 0 work on it. NEVER in that month did they initiate a phone conversation to update me on the status. When I called them half the time I was told they were waiting on parts, half of the time I was told the parts were in, but they were waiting on a mechanic. Imagine my surprise when I walked in, one month later, and saw the parts had been ordered THAT DAY. And here is the terrible part...I have used them for various vehicles for 20 years. When I moved to ellisville they were honest mechanics with fantastic communication. Communication has become problematic over the last 5 years, but I still believed they were honest. No more. I have recommended Joe's for 20 years. That stops today. Try Sonny's on Old Manchester. I went back and retrieved my care and took it to Firestone on Truman. We work mostly with Drew who is a valued employee, and gives us the best advice for safety. Went in for oil change and when I got my car back by the time I got home there was smoke coming from under the hood and heavy smell of oil burning. After opening hood I notice oil all over the engine. I called Joe's to explain situation and they said they spilled oil when changing. They had a tow truck come get my car and take back to shop. They cleaned up my car, but I still am having small oil burning issues even after driving now for over 300 miles. I would have thought what little remaining spill would have burnt off by now but yet this issue remains. Will have to take somewhere else to have them take a look now at what seems to be a small oil leak caused by this oil change incident. read more

I used to take my car here but then moved further out so I hadn't been here in a while. I called last week to see if I can come in to have a repair done. The person I spoke to said, "please wait until next week. One of our repairmen is on vacation and the other had an emergency. Bring it by anytime next week, we'll squeeze you in." I was totally fine with and understanding of that situation. Now this week rolls around and I'm glad I called before I left. Now the employee states "Oh we're completely booked up. Sorry." More importantly, they are completely unwilling to make an appointment in the future. I don't understand how it's feasible for a customer who works Monday through Friday to bring a car in and leave it there for a whole day when the job doesn't take more than a few hours. My family, friends and I have taken our cars here for years. Never a problem with their service. If you take your car to the big local chain (you know which one I mean) and they try to tell you that you also need something else fixed, take your car to Joe's and they will almost certainly let you know that you probably don't. They are very honest and thorough about telling you what does or doesn't need repair. And if they can't fix it, they know all the good guys who they can recommend to you. I took my car in because I had been having trouble with it, and I was moving to Nevada and wanted to make sure it was okay to drive that distance. I told the guy at the front desk that my check engine light would come on periodically, sometimes when my gas level was low, sometimes right after I put gas in. When it came on, the engine felt like it was running very weakly and had stalled once or twice, but only in parking lots after I had just started the ignition. He was very rude and dismissive, and said right off the bat that I probably just needed a new gas cap. I also told him that I had just noticed my brakes making a grinding sound in the week before I took the car in. I was willing to pay whatever it took to fix these problems. A few days later, they called and told me that the brakes were perfectly fine (60-70% of the brake pads left), the car had passed safety inspection, and all I needed was a new gas cap. My total bill, including inspection, was $84. For the record, the person who called was MUCH nicer than the man I originally dealt with. I replaced the gas cap and was on my way to Nevada. I had not even gotten out of Missouri when my check engine light came on (with a full tank of gas). I was furious, but I was in the middle of nowhere with two dogs in the car and had to keep going. Imagine my horror when a few hours later, my car literally died going 70 mph down the highway. I was somehow able to coast over to the shoulder, but was obviously really shaken up and did not want to drive the car any further. My boyfriend was following me in his car, so he said he would drive my car for the duration of the trip. It did not stall again, but the check engine light stayed on the entire way to Nevada. By the time we got there, the brakes were also grinding so loudly that people in our new neighborhood literally turned to stare. My car is older (2003) and has definitely seen better days. It would be different if they had actually attempted to fix the problems I had described, or had at least given me an honest assessment. Instead, I feel the man I spoke to made up his mind that it was just my gas cap right away, and didn't actually look into it further. I also don't understand how they could say my brakes were fine when you can physically hear them coming down the road. Why is it that anytime I have taken my car in to be repaired, it costs at least $100, yet my bill was only $84 when I took it to Joe's wanting two major issues looked into, and made it completely clear to them that I was driving it cross country through the desert? To make a (very) long story short, I gave Joe's $84 to do absolutely nothing except provide me with a near death experience on the highway and a lot of added frustration and hassle during an already stressful cross country move. I can see from another review that I'm not the only one who experienced the jerk at the front desk, so maybe the can use my money to get that guy some training in dealing with customers who are PAYING for a service. read more

The guys at Joe's Garage went above and beyond to find me a part for my suburban at the cheapest cost to me and we're completely forth coming and honest through the whole process. The part I agreed to use was a refurbished part that ended up not working properly. I am leaving tomorrow for a trip so they made sure my vehicle is safe for travel (even though the part only fixed half the problem) but they promised to have a new replacement waiting for me when I get back next week. They even stayed a little past closing to get my vehicle in working order. I love these guys. I would recommend them to any and everyone. They are the only people that have ever done work on my newer car(except for oil changes) They have wonderful service and always have the customers best interest in mind. I had one of my cars there for 3 days and Ross said that since the car was so old it was pointless for me to fix it, so after he took apart (and put it back together) the engine, I was not charged a single penny. I've visited this place 3 times, twice to get my break light fix, & twice my break light went out within 15 minutes of pulling off their lot. Also, my most recent visit, I went in for an inspection & they said all was good. A couple hours later my car died going about 30mph & again, "nothing was that wrong when we checked it". Personally, every experience has not been good with this place, & I've paid 3 times to have more issues just suddenly reappear after leaving. read more

I worked with Drew, who was just great, but everyone else I dealt with there was really nice and helpful too. My first experience with them just happened about a week ago. I went in for safety and emissions tests. They were honest and quick with the necessary repairs. They didn't try to sell me on anything. And the price was outstanding! I recommend trying them out for sure! They are what customer service is about---honesty and someone you can trust! And, no, this is not a "fake" review, like I sometimes wonder on these sites.
