I had previously felt Joes was keeping the bar low. Having been a customer there for several years I always looked forward to getting something from there on the way through Marengo, we had had a few poor experiences there in the past year. Saturday night was the exception to how things have been in that last year. I decided to give it one more try before writing them off completely. The sandwich was exactly as I ordered!! Fries were amazing as usual and the kid working at the window was pretty decent when I explained that the last few times I'd ordered from there it wasn't good at all. Can't believe joes place is only a 2.8. Food is phenomenal for the Marengo area. Joe brings Chicago style Italian recipes that I only recall from where I grew up in Italian neighborhoods near Chicago. He may have some minstaffing issues but keep in mind he employs many teenagers from the immediate community as a service to all. Second time being there and it was no better. Visited on Father's Day 6/15/25. Thought I'd be safe ordering a taco salad. They're usually run of the mill. I was wrong! I was asked if I wanted chili or chicken strips on the salad. I chose chicken thinking it was healthier. Wrong! It turns out they used some dark meat which was probably leftover from their chicken entrees on the menu. The entire bottom and halfway up the side of the taco shell was completely mushy. This is the first time I've been to Joe's Place in 4 yrs. Not because of a mediocre experience, but due to the fact that I haven't been in the area. I am pleased to see that I made a good decision. Their attention to cleanliness hasn't suffered one bit. The menu was fairly extensive and the pricing is what you would expect in these inflationary times. I will admit the quality of the food takes the sting out of the pricing I was actually impressed with how quickly I received my order after placing it. All in all a pleasant experience. Extremely disappointed. We visited on 8/4/24 exactly a month from when the menu was posted for Fourth of July. These prices are outrageous especially since what I ordered should have been $48.71 before taxes and the card fee. And I paid $64.49 before taxes and the card fee. This place is a total rip off. I ordered a buffalo chicken wrap which was the size of a junior burrito and a baked potato with a fountain drink 18 dollars! Then get this...... I've been ordering take-out for 9 months, every week, either Friday or Saturday night. Always the same meal, one entree item for my wife, another for myself, plus an order of mozzarella logs which we share. Four weeks ago we discovered no mozzarella logs in the bag when I got home. It's a 20 minute drive there, so 40 minutes round trip. I called to bring the omission to their attention and was told that a credit would be on file for the next time I came in, which was agreeable. Two weeks after that, the same thing happened again. This time I actually complained. It was the 2nd time that the appetizer wasn't included in 5 weeks. The first time was an inconvenience, now I questioned their competence. The business isn't overwhelmingly busy, particularly on Saturday's around 5! There's usually just a few tables occupied plus myself waiting for my order pickup to be readied, so not a lot of distraction from the task at hand. The manager on duty apologized and again promised a credit for the mozzarella logs. Well, the next week I went in for my pickup my credit was denied? While it wasn't outwardly stated as such, the manager believes that I invent the missing appetizer to get one for free. I suppose that I should confess, I'm the infamous "appetizer extortionist". Well to be clear, I'm not going to open bags to check an order for completeness every visit. That should be the responsibility of someone in their employ who receives a paycheck, plus, I want the bags sealed to keep the food warm during my 20 minute drive home. I'm done going to Joe's Place. If Portillo's had a less successful younger brother, it would be this place. With plenty of options for food, it becomes apparent that they really don't have a specialty, or at least something that they're known for. The place, however, is quite large, and from other reviews it seems that parties would have plenty of space here. Having only been a few times, this review should be taken with a grain of salt, like anything a politician says. The food from each time I've been has tasted fine, not fantastic, but certainly not disgusting. Over the years I have been to this place it only seems to get worse, the pizza is frozen pizza quality, burgers are not a good grind and you never know if it's going to be a burnt hockey puck or raw meet luncker. We rented the banquet room for a gathering of 150 people. We enjoyed pasta, Italian beef and salad.Added to this was a cash bar. The second floor area is servised by an elevator and has a large outdoor balcony for socializing or a place to smoke. The service is very professional, the food was kept replenished and hot, for which many compliments were received as to taste and quality. Table settings looked very nice and dishes we cleared in a timely manner. In short the event was very pleasant and caused us no stress as everything went seamless. Brought a group of 13 for my daughter's 13th birthday party. Worked with Ivy and Debbie, two of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. Ordered the food in advance and it was cooked perfectly and ready right on time. Thin crust was perfect; cracker-thin and just the right amount of crunch. The basic thin crust sausage pizza was absolutely delightful. Loved it. Our "crowd favorite" was a margharita (tomato, basil, garlic, mozzarella, and olive oil, thin crust). So so good. I want to thank Joe's Place for a delicious meal and for being so accommodating to me and my group. They couldn't have done a better job. Impossible to give this place any less than a perfect 5-star rating; everything was excellent and delicious and a great value. They even allowed us to bring our own cupcakes for the birthday dessert. Have been here twice - once drive thru, once inside take out. Drive thru was *extremely* slow - we were the only car in line and had to wait *at least* 10 minutes from ordering to picking up. (What do they do when they're busy?) Realisitically, drive-thru doesn't seem to be much of an option - recommend parking and going inside to wait. The good news: Fries were great, and gyro sandwiches were good. Second visit, we went inside - really went there for the fries (as we were in the area), but ended up also ordering some onion rings. Onion rings were a fail - they are the breaded kind, and I prefer the battered ones - won't order again. Decor is good - seems to be centered around cars - racing, parts etc. Would I recommend: I'd suggest trying it. Would I return: For the fries and gyros. She had to eat it with a fork. I ordered a cheeseburger. It was raw. They can't even cook the hamburger. The bun was cold as if they just pulled it from the cooler. What a great variety of food and great prices too. My wife and I took her parents out for a Friday early dinner. My father in law raved (87 years old) about the fish and chips, really fries with the potato skins. He too some home. My mother in law wanted Italian, so she had baked mostacholi with a small salad. She took half of her half order home and kept saying how great it was. My wife had the four pieces broasted chicken with potato salad and coleslaw. She said it was perfect and took half home. I had the Joe's monster burger, medium, with carmelized onions, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and mushrooms. I was hungry and had been told that I would probably take some home. No way, it was fantastic, perfectly seasoned and cooked. Not fatty or greasy, great probably 1/2 pound burger. Oh they serve beer, bottled and tap, fair price. The ambiance makes it an even better place. Neat old signs, comfy booths or you can sit at a table. They were accommodating when a group of 8 college age kids came in, they put table together.
