I cannot believe I have never reviewed The Donkey Inn (the Donk as we call it). We ate here just about every Saturday night as our favorite waitress worked here. If I could give half stars, our most recent dining experience would get 4.5 stars. Better than a 4 but not quite a 5. We went on a Saturday evening after a long family discussion on where we should go. It had been almost three years since we ate there and we just weren't sure if it would be the same. I believe I had iced tea, the teens had cherry Pepsi's and the husband had a beer. We ordered potato skins as an app and the fam said they were as good as they remembered. For dinner my husband ordered a pizza, my son ordered the Cajun chicken strips and fries, my daughter ordered a tuna melt and tater tots and I ordered the pick 2 half sandwich/salad/soup thingy. I picked the soup of the day and a half turkey sandwich on marble rye. The soup of the day was creamy chicken and rice (one of my faves). Everything we ordered was so good. It was really nice to be back at our old stomping grounds and the food seemed to be better than it was three years ago. read more

Met some friends on a Sunday afternoon. They have a few types of Bloody Marys. I got the Donkey. Big, flavorful, with fixings and a beer chaser. It was good! I ordered biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs. A different type of biscuit gravy with big cubes of sausage but really tasty. I know they have breakfast specials and it draws in people. My friend ordered a salad and the extras she asked for seemed a little expensive. I would stick to the menu. Nice restaurant, big and clean. Good friendly service. The Donkey Inn is probably a 3-3.5 star place in general, but when their breakfast menu is taken into account, they become a solid four. Something happens inside you when you eat breakfast well into the post meridiem, something other than your belly getting filled with fine food. Your younger self awakens, if even for just a moment. And that younger self might be you wearing fleece footie pajamas or it might be you wearing a flannel shirt, jeans that haven't been washed in two months, and a full face of stubble. Depends on which younger self you're tapping into, and probably whether you order savory vs. sweet. In any case, any place that serves breakfast all day is a little special. We all need a place like that. For everything else, there will be hits and there will be misses. The grilled vegetables that come with entrees are excellent. The pizza, while passable, isn't the best in the area (crust is slightly sweet and... wimpy). And the day I order the half sandwich with soup - get the Polish Ham, I thought, support the local flavor, I thought - only to get two slices of deli ham on a half sandwich... Never again. Donkey Inn is a great place to escape rush hour traffic, which is just what we did. It has a large shaped bar for lots of bar seating. They have tables too and a separate dining/party room. We stopped in for a beer and ended up getting a pizza, and stay for the Bears NHL game. read more

We stopped for a late lunch today. The inside has been completely redone and it's very nice. My husband ordered the patty melt. He's very picky about them. He said it was one of the best he's had. The meat tasted fresh, well cooked. The tater tots were really good. They were very light. I ordered the Chipotle chicken salad. I loved it. It was loaded with corn, black beans, grilled chicken, avocado, different kinds of lettuce. The Chipotle ranch was delicious. The manager, Laura, stopped by. She was lovely. She explained that most of the food is from scratch, including the delicious salad dressing. Can't wait to go back for the Reuben. Came for lunch with my coworker. I ordered for the two of us. I ordered two chicken fried steak dinners. A half hour later our food came out. I said this in not what I ordered. She said yes it is you ordered two chicken specials. I said no i ordered two chicken fried steak dinners. She said everyone comes on Thursday for the chicken hope ya like it. They said they were a bit backed up, but after we were sat we waited for 15 minutes and never received menus or silverware, and the waitress walked by us 6 times without looking in our direction, so we left. Waited for a little, for the crowd to slow down and grand opening to pass to visit. My kids and sister had already visited three times so they told me I had to get the blt club. So.... I split the club and chicken fingers with my sister. Kids got the buttermilk pancakes, husband got steak wrap. Aside from some strange mini occurrences with the waitress, it was a great visit. I wanted to take the time to update this review as my first experience as you can see was not a positive one. To be honest the main reason I decided to return to this place was based solely upon proximity. We have an 8 month old now and the weekend of Valentine's Day was the first time my sweetie and I have been out together, by ourselves, since she was born. We were both going a little mad and it was long overdue. Even with grandma over babysitting for us though, we wanted a place close to home unless we had to head back to the house quickly. The Donkey was the closest place that offered both food and alcohol and was open late (2 AM). This time around we had a really great time and received great food, drinks, and service. I started with beer (they have plenty of section on tap and in bottles) and then switched it up to mixed drinks later. The Moscow mule signature drinks were delicious. All were different variations of a ginger beer and simple syrup mixture, and went down easy. Far too easy in fact, as we had to take an uber home later. The menu here is enormous, like Cheesecake Factory enormous, and spans enough variation that just about anybody could come away happy. They serve breakfast at all hours here, which is what I ultimately decided upon. The skillet was yummy and the has browns nice and crisp. The bartender was a hoot to hang out with and was quick to offer suggestions for both food and drink. I am sure we will be back the next time kid cabin fever sets in. read more

I came here with my niece, for a lunch to celebrate her 21st birthday. Our experience was actually fantastic! Having visited the Donkey Inn in Palatine when I was younger, it's good to see they brought great food, and a cleaner (this was like 30 years ago) restaurant. ;-) We were welcomed and seated right away. Our server was on top of taking our order, and wishing my niece a happy birthday! The food came promptly, was hot and fresh, and our soda and water were never empty before getting a refill. The alcoholic beverage was nursed along, so didn't need refilling. Overall, a fantastic experience! We will likely come back again in the future, as I'm in the area. read more

Not worth the time. We stopped in with a friend. The first sign was when we had to seat ourselves. Than after sitting for over 30 minutes and watching the server stand in the back all the time we were there. I asked the people next to us if anyone checked on then. And the answer was no. Knowing that they were there before us i got up and went to the server and asked if someone was going to take our order. And was told it will be a wile and she didn't know how long it would be. So we left and went to the tracks where we were greeted and seated immediately with in 5 minutes we had our drinks and order in. Another great time at the tracks. I'm sorry and tired of hearing we cant staff. This has become the standard response for SHIT service. And its time to stop making excuses. They did a great job renovating the space. The waitress we had was very friendly and admitted to still learning the menu so checked to make sure what came with each order. I did not mark down for this because the menu is extensive. I mean come on they serve breakfast all day! Now for the food... I ordered the chicken fried steak entree with soup. It was good but not great. I expected more of a crunch to my chicken fried steak; which just wasn't there, and the mashed potatoes were just ok. The veggies were fresh and tasty (carrott/squash mix cooked al dente). My husband had the philly sandwich and absolutely loved it. As far as places to din in Algonquin go, Donkey is a decent "Tex-Mex" bar and grill you can take the family or hang out with friend. The scene is low-key chill as the staff is pleasant and welcoming. The bar seems a bit oversized for the space, but I'm sure they have plans for it down the road. The bar staff is always wonderful. Tara and Kassie specifically make our visit enjoyable each and every time. It feels like a genuine family greeting when we see them. The drinks are always full, tables always clean, and the conversations engaging. We have always felt respected and well taken care of during our visit, and look forward to seeing Donkey and their staff blossom. When you visit, try the tomato basil soup. Its delicious. read more

I will start with the positives. The atmosphere is pleasant and the decorations warm and inviting. The table servers are pleasant and experienced. The food and the price are not worth the positives. We waited an hour and a half to get are food. When we did eat the food it was cold and the waffle fries were overcooked an uneatable. We dropped $40 for a very unpleasant experience. If you decide to still visit this establishment I would go on an off time have plenty of patience and plan to supplement the meal. read more
