I am finally, and enthusiastically, writing this favorable review after dozens of visits/purchases - and the follow-up experiences - at Joe's Sporting Goods in St. Paul. Please take the time to read this entire review to find out what Joe's Sporting Goods is really about. It's not just about prices and availability. Joe's is about service -- a quality that is more and more often lacking in our modern, big-box, hurry-up, serve-me culture.
Why Joe's? (1) great selection and variety of projects -- (2) friendly, personable staff who are consistent professionals and even remember me between visits -- (3) people that are willing to go the extra mile and work with me during and after the sale to ensure that I'm getting the most out of my equipment. It's their service after the sale where Joe's has always exceeds my expectations.
Based on many sale and after-sale experiences, it is always clear to me that the leadership and staff actually care about their reputation and product. And, Joe's leadership and staff members actually participate in the outdoor activities they support and retail. Joe's carries the equipment and provides advice based on their testing and experience in the field. When I'm asking questions, it is beyond helpful when the person I'm "grilling" with questions has been out there and tried the stuff... been through the mill with it. And, if something hasn't worked out the way I expected, they have always made it right -- I speak from experience on this. I've had several returns, equipment tweaks (boots/skis) or exchanges where equipment failed or simply didn't meet my expectations. It was always handled fairly and without complaint. I like fair prices and great up-front service just like everyone else. But, it's the service after the sale that really counts. Businesses - and people - should not be measured by what they do when things are perfect, but by what they do when it isn't. Joe's has never let me down. They always find a way to fix what isn't perfect or check in with me to ensure that my equipment is working the way I expect. And, and that's what really keeps me going back there. Their prices are competitive, but I would (and do) pay extra for that kind of commitment to service...(I live in Eden Prairie and I drive the 30 miles past other sporting retailers to bring my personal and family outdoor recreation business to Joe's.)
I spend most of my time and $$ in the ski department, but I branch out. In the ski shop, I've had fantastic support, service, and advice that I really needed. I've recently returned to skiing and ski racing almost 20 years after a life-changing injury (and a left, lower leg amputation). Joe's has worked with me every step of the way (no pun intended). They know their product AND they know racing (I'm an REI fanatic too, but you can't get that at the REI alpine department). I'm an over-the-hill, 42 year-old, amputee ski racer. But, I've been able to rekindle a fire for skiing and competition unavailable to me until now due to pain and injury over the past 20 years. If you think it's easy to get an adaptive skier back on equipment and skiing competitively against able-bodied skiers -- after a 20 year break -- think again. I don't just slap the gear on and head out - it's a lot of up-front research and after the sale tweaking to make sure it works right. Joe's doesn't blink... they just get it done. The staff at Joe's has even worked with my coaches and our adaptive team to get equipment that works under the challenging conditions for adaptive skiers and racers. I've also outfitted my entire family as well so they can enjoy the journey with me. (If you have young kids that ski, consider Joe's annual rental program for kids.)
I can honestly say, without dramatic emotion, that I would not be enjoying and thriving in my return to ski racing and free skiing without the expert and person-to-person service I've received through Joe's Sporting Goods. I've also had the opportunity to race with Joe and his sons (Jorden and Jenner) at our annual adaptive ski race. I can tell you from personal experience that the family is passionate and committed about people, the community, and outdoor recreation. In my book, that passion and commitment are the key ingredients in a recipe that works and keeps me coming back again and again.
On another - very important - note, Joe's is a small, family-owned business based in Minnesota. If you live in or love Minnesota the way I do, pay it forward by supporting Minnesota business. And, while I won't go into details, check out the charitable and community support record of Joe's Sporting Goods. Their community support is across-the-board generous, consistent, and broad. I cannot put a price on that. Please try them out and support them in return. read more
