The selection and service is some of the best one can ask for. I normally grab my local beers here when back home in Memphis but unfortunately, that may have to change. For the 3rd straight time, I've ended up with damaged cans hidden by the hard plastic can carriers. I wouldn't be disappointed about it if I didn't live over 550 mi away. A great find for us. After traveling and wanting to get some genuine Memphis BBQ, we thought it would be good to get some local beer to go with it. The store is attractively laid out and with a tremendous selection. I went to the back to look for local beers and the staff was very helpful in walking through the various breweries and their recommendations. It was surprising (and a little sad) that the beer run ended up being the best part of the meal. If back in Memphis, this is the first place I would go for my liquor needs. read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to actually write a review about Joe's! We literally lived down the street from Joe's for about 15 years. During the pandemic they were able to pivot very easily. Curbside became my friend and my waistline shows it. We have been members of the wine club for about 7 years and enjoy the selections. We have never had a month in which we were disappointed or felt slighted, which was a real concern for me prior to joining. I mean who wants to be stuck with wines you don't like? The staff is very knowledgeable and it's clear that they want to be there. You can literally go in with a dinner/meal suggestion and they will pair a great wine. I love building my own 6 packs so I can try various different styles and breweries and this place has the best craft selection I've ever seen. It was a challenge to stop at 6. I live in Olive Branch just across the border where beer is not sold with wine or liquor. WEIRD! But my absolute favorite thing to drink is DRY hard cider with ZERO or close to zero sugar. On a whim, I drove up to see what Joe's had and was pleasantly surprised to see about 3-4 different ones I would like out of the maybe 15-20 stocked. I would love to see them get some craft hard cider from Michigan the absolute MECCA of hard cider. I would probably make a monthly trip and buy a case or more of Virtue, Ridge, or pretty much any Michigan cider. They did however have a small tap room to purchase howlers and growlers but wasn't sure if I wanted any of the cider on the taps. That being said the rest of the selection they had was really great. A pretty wide selection of wine and liquor. Upon checking out I was asked if I wanted to join their beer club but I have celiac's and cannot drink regular beer. If they had a cider, wine, or whiskey club I would be happy to join that. Overall, enjoyed my visit but a few small changes could push it over the top for me and people like me. read more

We found this place on a night of drinking at a restaurant down the street. I was quite impressed at the cleanliness of the establishment! The selection of both liquor and wine is amazing. I was just happy they had the tequila I love! The one negative was that I really had to use the restroom and when we found it we were kinda scolded and were told that the restroom was for employees only, however they were in a hallway and there was a men's and women's restroom. People here were really nice! So nice that the guy almost gave me my money back and my drinks for free! They have a huge selection of IPA's and other specialty craft beers. They even have their own tap with sealable bottles. The squealer, I believe it was called, was $6, and the jug was $12. How or why anyone would need the jug is beyond me! It was so big. I got the squealer and that was big enough to last me almost two days. The prices of their drinks were really good. They stayed busy so I think they discount the prices. I would recommend you go by here if you like getting a really good cold beer. You will not be disappointed and the staff will treat you right. Don't be afraid to ask if you have any questions. I had too and they were delighted to help me. FYI, recommend parking on the side instead of the front. Easier to turn off on and not to mention that the road is a little hectic itself. read more

I remember going to a benefit concert to save the "Sputnik" about a decade ago. Joe's just wouldn't be the same without its signature look. This is one of the better liquor stores in Memphis, in my opinion. Nice selection, great location and helpful staff. I am not going to argue as to who is the "best" liquor store in Memphis as there are a few really good stores in town. I will say that Joe's is undeniably the best in Mid-Town, better than most in Memphis and as good as the other really good stores out east. The staff is extremely friendly, knowlegeable, and are weirdly good at remembering names and faces. Great job guys! Keep up the good work! Oh they also have a wine, and more importantly, a beer club here that is very reasonable. I like wine now and again, but mainly I'm a beer guy, and Joe's has what may be the best high-gravity beer selection in town; not only that, but they offer the Beer Nutz beer club, which, for $15/mo, provides members with new beers every third Friday; I don't always love every selection, but the club has introduced me to several beers that have since become favorites. Extra Special Bonus: the fella who writes the Memphis Flyer's beer blog is now an employee there, which will do nothing but ensure that the fine beer selection at Joe's will continue. Any store that has a ginormous, rotating, star-shaped monstrosity colorfully luring me in gets 5 stars. They also get 5 stars when they have the selection that Joe's does. The wine selection is simply a-mazing. If you cannot find it at Joe's you should probably just forget it exists. If you are a wine snob, I am sure you will find your fair share of things to purchase. They have everything ranging from Franzia in a box to $100 dollar and up bottles of the best tasting drink to hit your lips. If you are more of a label-picker-outer like myself? No worries. (Beer-Specific Review) I have gone here 5 times in the last year yet never bought anything. Each time, I keep hoping to find something different, something cheaper, something unique. But every time I leave disappointed. It's fine if a truly superior bottleshop wants to charge higher-than average prices. You pay for the selection or for the service. Unfortunately, Joe's offerings are identical to Buster's or Yorkshire's but at significantly higher prices. Is there some kind of Midtown premium they're charging? I've looked up and down the aisles in a vain hope they'd have something different, but I just can't find anything that I couldn't get for cheaper elsewhere. I've also never had someone come over to talk to me as I peruse the beer selection--not that it's necessary, but it's always nice have happen and the other places in town do so. I was completely roped in by the sign. The big, retro lighted sign that you see and think, 'Ahhh! Lights!' as you drive by. I finally went in, and I was really surprised. it's not just some dive liquor store inside. It's pretty fancy. Very clean, pretty tile work, amazing, AMAZING selection of wines. I will go nowhere else. You can find cheap wine and you can find expensive wine. I spotted some Moet-Chandon Rose and I squealed with glee. Have you tried it? You must. There's even a $500 bottle of Cognac which my stepdad would love. There's a large chilled section if that's what you like and a great selection of liquor. Tons of options in all price ranges. What really makes this place nice (in addition to the awesome unmistakeable sign) is the customer service. I went in here wanting to try a new wine but didn't know my wines well. A member of staff was more than happy to walk me around and show me different wines that fit the description of the taste I was looking for in different price ranges. Not once did he make me feel like a horses ass for coming into a wine store with little knowledge about wine. :) This is why I won't vote for wine being sold in grocery stores. I'm new to Memphis. There's a crazy pandemic happening. And, yea I get it... It's not about me. However, I'm the paying customer. I've enjoyed dipping into Joe's once a week after working in my retail job. I like to try different beers and ales. I have always felt welcomed until tonight. Upon check out, I was asked if I would like to join their beer club. I responded that yes I would, but new to Memphis, just started a new job, and I should because I enjoy trying.... Before I could finish my reply, the female clerk with curly short hair cut me off. She told me she just asked if I wanted to join and didn't really give a care about why I couldn't join today. She let me know that whether or not I join is not anything she cares about and will still go on about her day. The next 30 seconds were very confusing as I paid out. I will take responsibility fir being that customer that just wanted to be heard after hearing it all day myself. It's retail. It's what we do. As much as it can be nerve racking, customer service is #1. I'll go out of my way home from now on and avoid Joe's. One bad seed really spoils the whole apple. read more

Hell to the yes! Just seeing the sputnik outside makes me happy. We used to affectionately refer to Joe's as "The Jetson's Liquor Store" Haha.. They have a huge selection of wines, from cheap to tax return splurge, every liquor I ever went in there looking for, and plenty of champagne/cava/prosecco. They have a whole isle of IPA beers too. I like how they label which wines are organic (nerdalert) and I never felt judged if I wanted to look at nicer wines than I could really afford. They have a gigantic assortment and the staff is happy to help you make a selection, or even just help you reach it off the top shelf. read more
