Our family adopted a dog from one of NDLB's Chinese Sanctuaries in East Asia 7 months ago. I have nothing but praise for all of the staff encountered throughout our adoption process, (which from start to finish took a little more than three months). NDLB is an incredible 501(c) (3) non-profit and their global mission of rescuing dogs and cats from immense suffering and complete abandonment, along with their exceptional care and concern for each survivor (no matter the gravity of each animal's injuries), is nothing short of outstanding. The dog we happened to adopt is a Japanese Akita Inu and happens to go by the name Romeo because he happened to be saved from slaughter on Valentine's Day (on February 14, 2020). The founder of NDLB , Jeff Beri, and his crew actually risked their lives twice to save our dog. Once (due to the strict Covid-19 Restrictions in China at that time and a second time to challenge the people who were about to slaughter him). I personally found all of the NDLB staff I interfaced with during the adoption process very personable and easy to connect with. More importantly, I found the staff demonstrated great care and concern for their animals throughout the adoption process. While waiting for Romeo's freedom flight to New York, we received multiple videos and photo's along with ongoing communication from the NDLB Chinese staff who were with him daily. The New York staff made sure I (along with my husband), understood all the possible challenges that came with adopting a dog from overseas and wanted to make sure we were up for this type of challenge. All I can say is Romeo has completely changed our family's life. Our family over the years has had three dogs. Romeo was our first overseas adoption, by far, he is the most considerate dog we have ever had the pleasure of owning, and is always looking out for our well-being. One last positive has been, over the past months, being able to maintain on going contact with Romeo's team in China, and being able to send photos and videos of him here having all sorts of fun in the USA. After my dog passed away in 2020, I knew I wanted to rescue a dog next. After extensive research, I came across NDLB and was instantly pulled in by their mission and fight against the dog meat trade. When I applied to adopt, I was shortly contacted by someone from their adoption team who was very responsive and so pleasant to answer all my questions. My dog was located in China at the time, and I was extremely impressed by how transparent they were throughout the entire process. They sent tons of picture and video updates to all the adopters with dogs in transport once they were on the road. It was incredible to also see how much the team cares for the dogs... one of the workers even rode and slept in the back of the truck (might I add it was the dead of winter during a snowstorm) to keep the dogs company and make sure they were okay during a several hour ride. I've now had my dog for a year now and I'm definitely biased but he's the best and everyone who meets him loves him. Of course you also have to expect to have to potentially put in work considering the unfortunate circumstances the dogs have been through. BANDIT: Adopted July 2024. She was so scared, now still scared as she was there seven years but has adapted to us fairly well. I think she had a worse time of it than most of the dogs as she was taken off a truck going to slaughter and most of those dogs from that particular truck have not adapted as well as most. Whatever she experienced was worse than most of the dogs at NDLB have, I think. However, after eight months, she has lost most of her fear of me, now feels safe and is a wonderful dog that still has some distance to go but is adapting well. Before adopting from this organization, please do a deep-dive into the reports online. There are many reports of abuse and neglect. Dogs have died en-masse in at least two terrible incidents in their care. I've had my dog since 2024 and I just reviewed her medical files more closely, only to realize there are conflicting dates and information throughout - so these records are totally forged. They encouraged me to foster my dog for a couple of weeks to see how she would get along with my other dog. After a few days I started getting aggressive, nasty texts from the owner that either I had to commit to an adoption or he needed the dog back for an adoption event by the end of the first week. I kept the dog because there was no way I was putting her back into their hands after I'd investigated them online. Also, their "adoption" fee was $2,225, which was kind of a surprise. I found this to be a terrible organization and I would never recommend anyone use this place. I sent the money right away and was promised a dog, with multiple videos of the one I picked sent by Mary and Jeff, with the arrival dates being repeatedly pushed back every 2 weeks when i kept asking to the point when I was told my dog had to wait until they could ship 450 dogs together, and would not even arrive until 2026 even though he was supposed to originally arrinve in October 2025. I was told maybe March 2026 but no guarantee he would ever come. While I think this organization is nice to save dogs from the meat market in Asia, the idea of sending 450 dogs on one plane at once seemed like it would not happen. I had my hopes of adopting a poodle destroyed by the idea of waiting so long, and never feeling like he would never arrive. The dogs in his care suffer because of his management of the shelters where dogs are only given one cup of food a day and spend 23+ hours a day locked in kennels. And if that were not terrible enough, all 44 dogs kept in their kennel in Canton, NY died in a fire alone with no one to help them. No fire alarms. No smoke detectors. No sprinklers. An investigation is ongoing. More people are speaking out now after the fire. She was patient and answered all my questions as we decided which dog would be the best fit for me. My dog wood was rescued off a meat trade truck with 1300 dogs back in 2017. I have adopted from NDLB. Do your research before you adopt or donate from this organization or it's founder Jeffrey beri. My dog has to respayed because it was not done right in china. My vet actually said it looked like someone with zero experience did the spay because part of her uterine horn and part of an ovary was left and they developed painful adhesions. I was later informed after approaching the rescue that over 200 dogs had the same issue! And then, a year later my dog gets sick and another adopted told me about a bunch of dogs having a deadly parasite. I got my dog tested and guess what! She had leishmania. She died shortly after. I tried getting help or at least I formation from beri but he screamed at me and then ghosted me. Don't adopt or donate to this organization. I feel so sad for their dogs because clearly the owner doesn't care at all about them. He just wants the $2000+ adoption fee. He is no better than the dog dealers in china. One of the most AMAZING Dog Rescues I have ever been involved with. No Dogs Left Behind is a boots on the ground organization that rescues dogs from the Dog Meat Trade in China. They rescue their dogs directly from slaughterhouses, dog meat trucks and wet markets in China. I did a lot of research before deciding to adopt to dogs from the dog-meat-trade and I was very aware that there were organizations claiming to do the same thing, but were not legitimate. I can tell you with 100% certainty that not only is No Dogs Left Behind a completely legitimate organization, but they are truly changing the world for animals. It was also very impressive to me that their founder, Jeff, is actually the person on the frontlines risking his safety to rescue these dogs. You can tell he has a very strong bond with each dog because of this. I cannot have dogs that shed due to a severe allergy (such a horrible curse) and was worried I would have a hard time finding a hypoallergenic dog at a rescue like this. I was surprised to find that they have nearly every breed of dog available for adoption. If you are looking for a specific breed of dog and are thinking of buying from a breeder, I urge you to check this rescue out. These dogs are SO in need of a good home. They have been through so much horror. I am waiting for my two newly adopted poodle-mix dogs to arrive home to me! I can't wait! No Dogs Left Behind has been with me every step of the way so far and they have assured me that they will be an ally for my dogs for the rest of their lives.
