The arboretum is next to the freeway and can get loud. There is plenty of parking though and is walking distance for most West Hill neighbors. Everything is green thanks to sprinklers which often run during the day and interfere with your picnics. Flowers start in late March and bloom through August. There is the occassional moose, groundhog, and porcupine, so be careful letting pets and children run unsupervised. Dogs are technically not allowed but no one cares. read more

In the era of lock downs and isolation, finding a park that is usually not jam-packed with people is delightful. This is one of those places where you can relax and rejuvenate as the cars whizz by on the freeway. Actually that is the reason for only four stars. You do have to put up with traffic noise. The diverse plants displayed here are a testament to the dedicated groundskeepers and master gardeners who thoughtfully tend this magical oasis of greenery. What a great park! There are several beds of lilacs including several of the Spokane lilac! The only reason why this park received a four star rating is that it sadly runs along I-90 and the noise from the cars is very disturbing to anyone trying to enjoy the serenity of what should be a peaceful park. I visited on Memorial Day 2020 (yes, during the Coronavirus crisis), and there were only a few people in the park with me, so social distancing was easy. The main building, however, was locked, but there was an outhouse (just in case). Thankfully I didn't need to use it! The road up to Rhododendron Alley was closed off, and since my own Rhodies had already dropped their blooms, I didn't venture up there. It might be worth seeing in early May, though. If you like lilacs, definitely come here in the later part of May to take in all the different lilacs. I believe that the Spokane Lilac Society was instrumental in getting so many different ones planted here. read more

John A Finch Arboretum is a lovely park with lots of trees and a creek that runs through it.  It's a good place to head for if you want to take a break from the day-to-day hustle and bustle. There are a number of different trails here where you can enjoy either walking or running; some of the trails are actually used periodically for cross-country running meets. You'll find a lot of different types fauna and flora here; many of the latter are actually labeled with descriptions, so this is a good place to come if you're interested in getting ideas for your home landscaping projects :-) read more

The Finch Arboretum is a beautifully maintained tree-centric arboretum. Arboretums, according to google, are gardens that are exclusively or largely composed of trees. I had to look it up to confirm that arboretums should not also contain exotic bushes or flowers. The Finch Arboretum had trees, and a lot of them of different shapes and sizes. One main problem I had was that it was hard to determine which tree was which. We walked around with a map of the tree names and I would point them out to my wife but I was never more than 60% sure that I was pointing at the correct grouping of trees. If I really wanted to be sure, I had to link up my google map location with the location on the paper map. Checking google maps every 5 minutes does not heighten the joy you get from walking through an arboretum so I stopped doing that and reverted to being 60% sure I was looking at a specific type of maple, pine, or cherry. I believe there were some small metal name tags on the tree limbs, but I would've had to walk through the tall grass to investigate. We passed on that. Another downside of the Finch Arboretum is that it is located next to a busy road. It's hard to fully appreciate the unique tree varieties immaculately positioned when a truck is racing down I-90. My wife really enjoyed the arboretum and it certainly is a place to check out for tree lovers but I wouldn't return if I was planning on sitting down to read a book. One side effect, and benefit of this is that if you go on a weekday evening, you will have the place to yourself. read more

This park is beautiful, especially in the fall. Definitely a little more of an "under the radar" park in Spokane, but worth adding to your fall yearly activities. This park is never crowded either so it feels like you have the place to yourself! So many different amazing trees and very well kept. read more

Beautiful place. Really well kept. Wonderful trees, most are labeled. Beautiful crab apples in bloom. Lots of green space. It's a city park, so yes you hear the freeway. No dogs allowed, which bothers some people. But we saw Turkeys, marmots, birds, etc . read more

Breathtakingly beautiful during the fall .. If you are looking out for the best of the fall, anywhere .. this is the place to be. With all the possible colors of spectrum at one place the park has become nothing but a photographer's dream. A lot of pre wedding, post wedding, family get together shoots and all keep on happening .. especially when the background becomes so very pretty with the fall. A stream runs through the park making it even more beautiful. The touch and see nature trail is a lovely way with signs and all .. so that everyone could enjoy. The only drawback that it is just next to the highway .. the noises from which might be distracting for a few peeps. All in all .. a great place for those lazy weekend where you want to hang out with friends or family and a picnic basket .. or spend a quiet walk, hand in hand, with your significant other .. or want a great DP for social media .. or may be even taking a nap all alone. read more

Super beautiful and well Kept! I didn't see very many flowers or colors but a lot of greenery and a few animals . Gorgeous scenery and incredibly peaceful . I went at about 9-10 am to avoid the heat ,so they had the sprinklers going and it was blocking a few trails but it's understandable. They have to keep it nice and green . I went all by myself and felt completely safe and comfortable . They even have an office with pamphlets that give you a map and information. I'd love to visit here again ! read more

One of Spokane's coolest little gems! Seriously love this spot. I grew up in Girl Scouts here, took my senior pictures here, had maternity photos here. It never gets old. Having an arboretum that is just magical is amazing. I absolutely love it. Short stroll through some really impressive landscaping with the season changes it is just glorious. So many different types of trees and so many photo ops, seriously. Get them photo ops people! read more

A lot of people consider Manito The Park to go to in Spokane. I disagree, and think that the Finch Arboretum is our best-kept summer secret. The only downside to it is its proximity to the highway, but most of the park is dense enough that you barely notice the car noises, if at all. While this park doesn't have a playground, it is a natural playground. I love to wander around here and get lost in all the green. Many of the trees and plants have labels but I don't really even notice those. There is a touch and feel trail for the blind to read about the plants also. A great place for a picnic, a date, a walk, just to hang out; pretty much anything that can be done sitting on the grass. It's a little scary at night, though. read more

I came to this place as a baby and I still visit all the time and don't plan on ever stopping. It's beautiful and timeless, I recommend visiting especially in the fall! It's a great spot for photoshoots and special occasions with your significant other and a fabulous place to bring your children. read more

A nice place for a short walk in this part of town. There are a number of interesting trees here (thumbs up!), but sadly not many are signed and the upkeep on our recent visit was quite poor, almost seemed neglected (thumbs down). That said, we saw signs of moose all over, though we didn't see an actual moose- add a star for moose in the city! However, the location is poor due to road noise, sandwiched between I-90 and business I-90. Minus one star for the highway noise. So, as you can surmise, I have mixed feelings, so it's just A-OK. Wish it weren't so close to the freeway, but it's a beautiful park. There are lots of different types of trees, including some unusual specimens. My boys (ages 2 and 5) love "climbing" the giant willow tree. There's also a nice stream that runs through the park. Lots of space to run around and explore, and it's usually not very busy except in the fall when the leaves turn color and everyone wants to take their family photos there! So much potential being wasted here! My son and I went to visit today and were dismayed at the degradation of arboretum in the last few years. There was an abundance of sick and dying trees and haphazard maintenance of the properties. I've never seen a public park this riddled with disease before. So sad..... read more

The husband and I are new to the area and were trying to find something to do over the Memorial weekend. We stopped here on our way to downtown. This is a great spot to just hang out, walk around, learn about nature, and a bonus: it's free! LOL This park is huge and next time we want to bring our bikes so we can cover more ground. So many big, beautiful trees, and flowers. I especially liked the rhododendron garden. All the colors were so vibrant, almost fake. There is a see and touch tour with signs in braille for the visual impaired. One downside is dogs are not allowed but it's a great way to spend a day. read more

An amazing collection of trees from around the world. The grounds are well kept and the area is never busy with other people. There is no admission, so its a great place to lay out under the grass and take a nap. It is right next to the highway, which makes for a nice constant hum for naps. And what better place to put an attraction like this? I wouldn't want to live next to a noisy highway, but a collection of trees to help clean the air is great. And the trees don't seem to mind the traffic ;) read more
