This is a model medical office. I wish all offices were like this one. First, the staff is exceptional. When I call, there is almost always someone to take my call. If not, they will call back quickly. That's rare. They are friendly, patient, kind and efficient. And, they always provide what I need right away. We were referred to Dr Selle through another Doctor. So we contacted the front office for an appointment, and were told that he is booking new patients for June/Jul 2026 (5 to 6 months away), and even longer if we wanted a back-back appointment for myself and my wife. I enquired that we may need medical attention before then, and she mentioned that she is booking for a Nurse Practitioner in a month, so I asked that I am not familiar with the term and she answered that she would do almost everything like Dr Sells does, I asked if that means prescribing medicine if needed. She answered that I should go to Google and search for the differences and similarities between MD, Nurse practitioner etc.. I apologized for my ignorance and asked her if I could book an appointment. She said that I need to contact my insurance first to ask for their approval. I told her that I have Aetna PPO and can choose my own doctors, it just cost me more if they are out of network and asked if their offices were part of the Aetna Network. She told me, I am sorry I can not confirm that, I think we cannot go ahead and serve you or your wife, just go back to your Doctor and ask for another referral. we cannot accept you into our practice and she HUNG UP ON ME. This is the first time in my fifty years that I have such an exchange with someone that my Doctor referred me to. I guess they do not need the new Patients, but, this is ridiculous and preposterous that she would be communicating like this with newly referred patients from top notch other Doctors in their fields. Why does this person still work in this office, I DO NOT KNOW AND WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN KNOWING EITHER. It is too bad, Dr Selle seemed to be an exceptional Doctor to work with, but he has a monster guarding the front office with a huge castle over her shoulders and thinks that she it is her mission to weed-out all the bad patients before she would bother the Medical Staff with their presence. Dr. John Selle is a wonderful doctor who cares deeply about his patients. He is curious and has a holistic approach, is open to bothexpanding his knowledge or providing insight on many topics. I greatly appreciate his willingness to spend extra time and the extra mile. He provides a level of care that all doctors should seek to embody when taking their oath. regarding most of these negative reviews, yes, his office can be tricky at times, but they are dealing with a firehose of stuff and everyone has their own style. Given the quality of his care, I would choose him regardless. They have also been incredibly helpful. So I take it all with a grain of salt. What would you rather have? Zero for the front desk. I have been a patient there for many years and am constantly astounded at how bad the main front desk person is at her job. She is also mean, and I have no clue why she has been there so long. Dr Selle and Victoria Chaudhary are decent. Here's why I won't be back - out of the blue they started charging patients who are in-network $150 a year office fee. They did a very poor job of notifying patients, as I would have dropped them like hot potato had I known this. Now I am paying $150 for a once a year dr visit with my in-network dr that is supposed to be FREE with my insurance. No thanks. I will not be doing that again. Unfortunately, Dr Selle's front office staff managed to leave an impression so bad that I am writing my first Yelp review in two years. My primary physician retired last year and, in his departure letter, recommended Dr. Selle as a trusted provider to use within an affiliated practice. The person who answered my call was somehow both indifferent and offensive at the same time, all while making it extremely clear that neither she nor Dr Selle had any interest in engaging on my call. When I called with a concern over bruising, they were on the blood test prescription so quickly that I actually went to the lab and the results came in the same day. I am heartbroken. I have been a patient of Dr. Selle's and his NP, Dr. Victoria Chaudhary (Emilie left years ago) for years and love them both. Finally, the poor performance of the office staff has affected my care. While I still adore Dr. Selle and Victoria, I cannot recommend this practice. If you have any reason to contact the office by phone, you will not get through, or if you do, you'll reach someone who will stonewall, make stuff up, deny mistakes -- anything but be helpful. They may cancel your appointments without telling you. They will tell you to jump unnecessary hoops. They will rewrite history to cover up their errors. You cannot believe a word the office staff tells you. Last Friday, July 30, the office person answering the phone claimed that Drs. Selle and Chaudhary are both on vacation for the entire month of August and there is no one covering the practice (I've never heard of this, especially for a busy PCP). When I asked if I could make an appointment with a covering physician, they told me to contact my insurance company to find another doctor. Just unbelievably bad office staff! PS I found out that Drs. Selle and Chaudhary are *not* on vacation for the month of August, only Dr. Chaudhary is on vacation for part of August, and there are appointments available in August. I am writing this review not because of the service I received, but because of the service I was denied. My insurance assigned Dr. Selle as my PCP when I signed up with my provider. I mentioned this to the receptionist when I made my appointment. The following day when I arrived for my appointment the receptionist saw my insurance card and said that they did not accept my it because I was part of Covered California. She called the doctor to confirm that they did not accept my insurance. When I asked how this could happen, she surmised that "the system" sometimes assigns Dr. Selle because he is part of clinic across the street. (?????) Nothing makes you feel more powerless than being sick and having a doctor tell you - by proxy of the receptionist -- that they will not give you care. I believe doctors should get paid for the care they give, and know that my provider is equally at fault. However, when it is known that there is incorrect information being distributed about your services and who it is you serve, it is your responsibility to rectify it. Dr. Selle could be the best doctor in the world, but my experience was awful and it happened in his office. Our broken healthcare system makes it easy to shrug our shoulders and think that this is just the way it is. But medical practices are businesses -- doctors get paid -- and customer service matters. My suggestion is when screening potential patients, please ask them if there insurance is provided by Covered California. You will save everyone precious time and money-- and a bad review. read more

This is a review for the responsiveness (or lack there of) and rudeness of the front office. I have tried to get a hold of this office for a week as the Dr. was referred by a friend of mine, they either dont pick up, pick up and hang up, are at lunch or closed at 5:01 pm! And now I finally get a hold of them after their lengthly lunch and the second question is what my insurance is, then She has me call the insurance to make sure Dr. Selle is part of the network, after saying she can't help me until i do, so I call and as I expected he is. I call back, no answer, call back again, she picks up, I tell her I just talked to her and I called my insurance and he is in the network, she puts me on a loooonggg hold and then when she comes back as if I am intruding, asks me again, yes, how can I help you?? again, I repeat, that I am trying to make an appt, and ... click she HANGS UP AGAIN!!! I guess all the signs are there, If the Dr. is not aware of the quality of service his front office is providing to new patients, what does that say about the quality of care he can provide...... Dr. Selle and his nurse Emilie are truly wonderful. I really feel that they have taken the time to get to know me and help me the issues I bring to them. They are a great sounding board and have gone above and beyond for me. They are five stars. The receptionist however, is truly terrible. She is very nice. She is very kind. Her Karma is intact. She is horrible at being the receptionist of this office. She has made few unfortunate blunders with faxing my paperwork places for us to all discover after a month of trying that she wasn't using the right phone number. When I email in direct questions through the patient portal, she normally provides the answer to some other question. Not mine. I don't know where she gets the question from. I will ask, "I can get an appointment next week?" And she will reply "Please fax in your lab results from the other office." It's almost cute. What's truly infuriating is her use of the phone. Rarely does she answer. It rolls to an answering service; it rolls to voice mail; a cheery message asks me to call back in 15minutes, at which time she will also not answer. If she does answer, she asks you to hold. If you choose to leave a message, no one ever returns calls. Once I left a message requesting an appointment. She made the appointment!! But she never called to tell me. She just buttoned that all up on her end. I tried leaving a message for her to please call me when she was taking calls, but she doesn't return those. One time, I got in the car to drive over there and ask for an appointment in person, and she called while I was on the way! What larks! Now I email my doctor through the portal and ask him to call me. After two years, I came out and told the doctor about the front desk, and they seemed perplexed, surprised. How your staff treats your potential customers, or in this case patients, comes from the top. I can't imagine that a Doctor (who claims to be committed to healing) is true to his profession when he allows his team to treat people so poorly. Dr. Salle was recommended to me by an acquaintance and (despite the less than favorable online reviews I read about his clinic's receptionist) a few months back I called to make an appointment. Sure, enough the experience with the "gatekeeper receptionist" was so terrible I didn't make one. It is a New Year, so I thought I'd try again, recognizing that perhaps my previous negative interaction with the receptionist was due to her having a bad day; unfortunately, the experience was even worse. Clearly from the negative reviews and my firsthand experience this is a systemic problem, not a one off isolated event. It is irresponsible for someone in the medical profession to allow his receptionist to treat people as she does. Fortunately, I do not have any immediate health concerns, and was simply seeking a new Doctor. The office refused to give me an appointment without a confirmation number from my insurer. They would not accept my card or plan number as evidence of insurance. I called in to Dr. Selle's office to see if I could get an appointment to come in and was told that I would have to wait TWO MONTHS. I don't know who has time to wait two months when they want to see a doctor but I do not. I wrote a review about this and Yelp took it down because I lacked "firsthand customer experience," but if you ask me interacting with the office staff and making appointments falls under said firsthand experience - the office environment is almost as important as the doctor. Hopefully a few of you read this before Yelp takes down my comment yet again, and probably bans me from the site. Dr. Benjamin Maeck is wonderful and will most likely fit you into his schedule within a day or two. After reading the other glowing reviews about John Selle's work I checked out his website, where it clearly states that he is accepting new customers and does his best to accommodate appointments same day or next. So I took a shot. A woman answer's in a gruff tone "Dr's Office" I begin to explain that I am looking to set up and appointment with Dr Selle and am interrupted mid-sentence, by a sharp, "I have nothing till June" in such a tone as to make sure I knew I was wasting her time... and then she hung up. Doctor, if you are reading this, do yourself (and your business) a favor and get some better staff that care about your patients as much as you do. I'd love to give you another shot when you decide you want more business. read more

Dr. Selle is exactly as good as the five-star reviews say. His office, not so great. I went in for a physical in February. I had to get bloodwork done before I went, so the receptionist scheduled me an appointment at a lab so far south of me that it stretches to breaking the usual conception of the bounds of San Francisco. When I got back I checked on google maps--yeah, the same company has labs scattered all through the city, including one less than a mile from my house. The physical itself was as pleasant as one might hope for. "Can I have sex with my girlfriend (Meave G.) without putting latex on my penis?" "Go for it!" A month later, the problems started. With the billing, I mean. My insurance gives me one physical every two years, free of deductible. Yet I received a bill from Dr. Selle's office. I called my insurance to ask about it--it turned out the office had used the wrong diagnostic code on the claim, so it didn't look like a physical. Fine. I call the doctor's office and let them know they need to re-file the claim with the correct code. They agree to do so. A month later, I receive a new bill. I call the insurance company. Same situation. They didn't even re-file the claim. I call the office and yell. A month later, I receive a new bill. I call the office first. Me: "I'm tired of being the go-between here. My insurance and I agree that I get a free physical. Your office and I agree that I went to you for a physical. It's up to you to reconcile the difference." Receptionist: "Ok, I'll try that and call you back." She does not call back. Repeat approximately monthly to last Monday (now we're in July). I get the same bill, this time stamped "PAST DUE". I am prepared to consider any change progress. I call the office, only to find that they have (as of the start of the month) retained a third party to manage their billing. Thank jesus, I think. I call the company, they understand the problem, they re-submit the claim. Let's hope I don't have to update this review in a month. *** UPDATE 8/22/2007 *** Hey guess what! That third party? Not so great! But at least they're proactive. I got a call this morning from a very nice woman threatening to break my kneecaps. After a little negotiation, she and I got into a conference call with my insurance, who politely informed her that yes, the billing code was STILL wrong. I can only assume that her face was red. She is re-submitting, we'll see what happens. The worst part of this last episode: in the months that this whole debacle has taken, my insurance changed from giving me a 100% free physical every two years to a 90% free physical every year. No big deal to me, but when I called later, a receptionist answered the phone by saying: "doctor's office" with a voice that suggested she needs a vacation. I can't remember her name, but what surprised me was that she told me "It is your responsibility to make sure that we are in network with your insurance." I have never heard anything like this from any doctor office before in many years. It doesn't make sense to me; she could have merely told me whether or not the office accepts my insurance. Sure I can verify my benefits on my own (anybody can) and network coverage, but what I don't appreciate is her attitude, and tone. AND LET ME ADD THIS: I feel that I've done the office a huge favor by calling them. Your insurance provider's website might not always list all doctors - so sometimes the only way to find out is to call them. To me it sounded like the office is not welcoming new patients. Dr.Selle is great. Excellent bedside manner. He believes that western medicine should not be exclusive or eastern, homeopathic or any other options available. He will always try least invasive treatment first and I love that. I've known Dr.Selle since he was an intern. Always hardworking, always trying new approach, he projected confidence and competency. Both my mom and my husband are now his patients and are thankful for his flexibility with appointments and great office staff/environment. 5 stars-- Dr. Selle is legit! Within moments of meeting him I immediately knew I was dealing with someone who is genuine and passionate about what he is doing. My experiences with him give me hope that he is how new docs are now; well informed, patient and willing to say he doesn't know for sure and then research it. He strikes me as a genuinely curious and caring person who is in this for the right reason--people's health. He is not in a rush, which is totally different than other docs I have seen. Specifically I am inspired to write this because outside of the fact that all of my experiences with him have been really good, tonight I had a minor health question and he called me and spoke to me for 30 minutes, what doctor does that? I almost lost faith in doctors and in my hopes for help. Thanks to Yelpers giving honest rave reviews about Dr. Selle, I have finally found the doctor of my dreams. Writing reviews are a chore, but I feel the need to give back to the Yelp community for helping me on the path to healing. I like that Dr. Selle is a Doctor of Osteopath who generally looks at a problem holistically and provides long term solutions. Dr. Selle listened patiently and sympathetically as I explained my situation and I felt we actually had a productive dialogue about my health. I have had chronic back pain and anxiety for the past 4 years. Instead of referring me to a chiropractor or physical therapist like my previous General Practitioners, he referred me to a topnotch pain specialist (Dr. Judy Silverman) at SF St. Mary's Spine Center. Dr. Selle is tech-savvy! The office utilizes an electronic health record (EHR) and an online patient portal to organize information and maximize efficient communications with their patients. I can send him email messages and get a personalized response from him within 1-2 days! Also, he provides brilliant informative handouts for further reading and research on my own. (be a proactive patient :). Another wonderful thing I like about this doctor is his belief in FOLLOW UP's. Go figure! Other doctors I have seen really don't care how I do in a few months time and never requests a follow up. But Dr. Selle wants to see if his recommendations have helped you or not. If yes, great! If not, how can we make it better? I feel that Dr. Selle doesn't just send you out the door and give up on you. His staff is also kind and helpful. When I needed an earlier appointment, I appreciated that they called me back to let me know of a cancellation and I was able to take that spot. I am still seeing Dr Selle, happily. Been through all sorts of ailments - Shingles, Migraines, Anxiety, etc - during my time with him and he has consistently offered great care, holistic thought and, if needed, out-of-the-box approaches (after a typical solution may not work). He consistently replies to my emails, respects me - even when I have crazy-sounding symptoms, and strives to help me succeed in all areas of my life. Furthermore my boyfriend recently started seeing him as well with no long wait time which other people write of. Side note - If you want a specific "physical appointment" every good dr has like a 2 month waitlist for this - all over the city. If you want a regular appointment I bet you could get in sooner. The front desk staff frequently goes out of her way to help with prescriptions or rescheduling my appointments. I am confused by the strange reviews. She is so thoughtful to my daughter and always asks about her. I also see her interact with many elderly patients (of the other doctor in the practice) with much patience and friendliness. The other thing I really appreciate is that the desk staff will put a call on hold to deal with someone in the office. In-person comes first, as it should. read more

I found the name through my insurance provider search online, I tried to make an appointment but the front desk girl said they can't book me an appointment if I only found them through online search, I'll need to call my insurance and get a direct verbal verification that the practice is in my network (which is something that I never had to do before). I called my insurance and they told me if I found him through the provider online search then that should be it and if anything the doctor office should be the one who call my insurance not me. I called again explain what my insurance told me, and she still give me the same answer. All I want and need is a good new primary care within my network I thought I finally found one but apparently not. Dr. Selle is a gem. He is there for you 110% - especially since my boy and I seem to always get sick on the weekend or Christmas day... He's just a great guy, very smart, down-to-earth, and not into overly medicating anyone unnecessarily. He is never condescending and explains things really clearly. Dr. Selle is awesome! I recently switched to him as my Primary Care Physician and requested that he gives me a full physical exam and prescribes some lab test for me. He gave me a very thorough exam, answered all of my questions very thoroughly and patiently, and even suggested some alternative treatments to try for things that I would not have thought to ask him about. (E.g. he asked me if I had tried taking pro-biotic supplements -- I had not -- and pointed out that in some patients they have had beneficial effects for a condition I have. Since they benefit the body in all sorts of ways and have few, if any, downsides / side-effects, he suggested I consider taking pro-biotics to see if they improve my general well-being.) Dr. Selle also very graciously agreed to prescribe the lab tests I requested. When it turned out that there was an issue with the lab tests order (because of my insurance's and the lab's complex and unreasonable rules), he readily agreed to take the time to issue me a new lab tests order, even though it was through no fault of his that the first one would not go through. All in all, you can tell from the first appointment that Dr. Selle not only has a great breadth of knowledge and a very alert and open mind (as any physician should), but also really cares about his patients well-being and wants to do whatever is necessary to improve it (as only the best physicians do). read more

Dr. Selle is an outstanding doctor. He is compassionate, an excellent diagnostician, and open and available. He is incredibly smart and very good at figuring out solutions to tough problems. He's also great with any joint, neck, or osteopathic pain you might have. Yes, it can be difficult to get in to see him but that's because he's such a good doctor. He takes his time talking and listening to patients and does not rush you out the door, which is a rarity nowadays. If Dr. Selle taking more time with me when I see him and caring more about me and all his patients makes it take a little longer to get an appointment, that's okay with me. Also, if you let his staff know it's urgent, he will always find a way to get you in. He's thoughtful, has great referrals when needed, knows all the latest research and most of all is a kind person and a compassionate person. He's that great combination of both brilliant and caring that is so key (and difficult!) to find in a physician. Probably one of the smartest doctors I have ever had -- he was able to diagnose an issue even before my specialists at Stanford saw it coming. I enthusiastically endorse this guy. I agree with all previous posts. I finally feel like I have a medical professional advocating for my health and I can't say what a relief that is!!! Doctors and health care professionals usually make me nervous because they are so rushed for time. Dr. Selle did a thorough first exam and interview and actually asked me what we could work on together to make my health even better. He takes a balanced approach of holistic remedies and conventional medicine. I would recommend him to anyone, but especially to people that are wary of doctors. He finds the best and least invasive (i.e. less medications, more exercise, better diet and sleep hygiene, etc.) treatments, and if he isn't sure, he really goes out of his way to set you up with a specialist who can help- and he has only recommended fantastic specialists [dermo and ortho]. He is super nice and he uses a tablet so he has all the information in front of him and isn't fumbling around- and he seems to care- and actually remembers really specific things! I was referred to him by the USF clinic at St. Mary's and I couldn't have been more relieved to find a good- make that great doctor. Their billing is also super easy and pleasant. They work with your insurance, and make that part pretty easy. Plus getting apointments, easy as pie. And the waiting area- tres chic/ comfy- and the collection of art is neat, original classic movie posters, pretty interesting. read more

I do not recommend this physician if you have a complex, non text book condition. Dr. Selle was only helpful with medications and paperwork. He misjudged me and my situation and ruined my records. He is no longer my doctor and I still have to deal with his harmful evaluations. When you are labeled as a psychosomatic patient, it endangers your health and your life. It is a cop out covering up for lack of expertise and inability to listen and respect the patient. I deeply regret staying with him for several years. I was home bound and couldn't find a PCP who was willing to make house calls. In retrospect I wish I hired non emergency transport and found myself a different doctor. read more

The description both in Yelp and in his official website tells me that he is an osteopath physician who approach it holistically which is exactly what i am looking for. However, I called the office and they are basically telling me that NO , DR Jon Selle is not an osteopath and he does only internal medicine. Im trying to get to the bottom of this as this doesnt make anysense as both Yelp and the Website emphasis on Osteopathy. As a result the person I have on the phone simply tells me that the website is inaccurate. This is simply unprofessional. Not only the person on the phone could not listen to my request but could not either explain what the doctor does in reality. I'm sorry but this doesnt make me want to take an appointment here. read more

A victim of his own success? Dr. Selle has been my doctor for several years now - years during which I've had some unusual and life-threatening health problems - and my appreciation for him knows no bounds. Unfortunately, I guess many others feel the same. I just returned from a trip with several problems that require urgent attention. No same-day appointments. No same-week appointments. A week out is the best the receptionist could offer. I took the appointment, but I'm disappointed at best. As a current patient, I would have expected to be able to see my doctor on a somewhat urgent schedule for an urgent issue. OK - a few hours after the above review was posted I received a call back from a different person at Selle's office than I had spoken to that morning. She told me they could see me the following day, late afternoon. So squeaking got some attention - I'm still going to mention it to Dr. Selle when I see him tomorrow. read more
