I have been a patient of Dr. Abroon for many years and at every appointment he greets me with a smile and warm hello! Dr. Abroon has all the qualities that are important to me in building a healthy doctor/patient relationship! At the top of my list is that Dr. Abroon is a good listener. He never rushes my appointment and always addresses my concerns, thoughts, opinions and viewpoint. For example, Dr. Abroon will take the time to read an article I clipped from a health newsletter on a subject I felt was pertinent to my care. Dr. Abroon is very knowledgeable, concerned for my well-being, will make referrals when necessary and follow up on my reports. Dr. Abroon is empathetic, compassionate and caring. The staff is always cheerful, efficient and polite. There are times I forget to mention something at my appointment and get upset with myself. But, I feel comfortable calling the office when I get home. I know that Dr. Abroon will return my call and with his calming voice say, "Alice, how are you? How can I help you?" Echoing the sentiments of some others, as someone who has intimate knowledge of medical billing practices, Dr. Abroon is unethical in this regard. Here is my experience: I'll start by saying that the staff were friendly and professional, but that is the extent of the positivity here. I have in-network insurance, early 30's, low risk for heart issues and, by choice, just underwent a full ECG and heart stress test with a licensed cardiologist/heart doctor specialist about 6 months ago. 40+ minute wait. Dr. Abroon is NOT a cardiologist. He is a PCP. Yet he insisted, even after I told him and his staff that I just did a fulsome heart exam with a cardiologist, that (1) I pay $250 out of pocket UNLESS (2) they administer an EKG at the start of the visit without having assessed symptoms or risks or heart issues. His staff conveyed that he does an EKG on all his patients, which is medically unnecessary according to a number of medical authorities (see, for example, https://www.aafp.org/family-physician/patient-care/clinical-recommendations/all-clinical-recommendations/cw-ekg.html). Could I have opted to pay $47 to move forward with his EKG? Sure. But on principle this is very clearly a very wrong thing to do. It is not ethical to push an unnecessary medical exam that is costly for an insurance company so he can receive pure financial gain, and again, what's worse is that when I declined the EKG, he gave me the ultimatum that he would otherwise charge me a whopping $250 out of pocket. After I raised all these issues with Dr Abroon, he declined to proceed with our visit. Dr. Abroon's practice is patently unethical, and calls to question whether he has tendencies to conduct his practice this way more broadly. I encourage you to avoid this place. Dr. Abroon is good and all but his office manager is the bomb and she's the reason I'm writing a review. What a gem!

I have been a patient of Dr Abroon's for almost 5 years and I fired him this past week. It is interesting to note that the most recent reviews here are almost 2 years old and older. This is relevant to my assessment. It seems like the practice of medicine in a proper and respectful manner has outgrown Dr. Abroon since I first became a patient and he has become what many of us try to avoid, a Dr. more interested in his personal interests, life and getting out of his office to take vacations and enjoy the Hamptons . Unfortunately, it seems like his interest is now less in proper patient care and more related to the difficulties of managing insurance companies and whether you are a patient that generates sufficient income for his practice to make it worth his while. In fact he told me so by telling me that I do not visit his office a sufficient amount of times to make it "worth" his while "to keep me as a patient", WOW. I have found in recent years that his examinations of me have grown increasingly superficial and reliant on the results of the blood work he orders. Regarding the results of these tests, Dr. Abroon has never called me to discuss the results of my tests, in fact, it is purely on faith that I believe he has actually reviewed them in that I have never heard his opinion of what the results of these test reveal to him. If I do not call and request a copy of the results of the tests, I never received them. But all of this was tolerable until this week when the true colors of his manner were revealed to me. I have been on a medication that Dr. Abroon has been aware of for four years originally prescribed by a specialist. The medication has worked well for me with no side effects. When the specialist that prescribed this medication to me retired this past summer and I was in office with Dr. Abroon for a check up I asked him directly if he could prescribe the medication for me as I no longer believed that I needed to incur the additional time and money for a specialist. He expressly agreed with this assessment and added that he currently prescribes this medication to a number of his patients and this would not be a problem. This December my earlier prescription ran out and I called his office to fill my prescription and was informed that his office was unable to do so at that time because Dr Abroon was on vacation and this service could not be provided in his absence. Although my prescription was running out I had no choice but to wait for his return. When I called on the day of his return from his hiatus I was informed by his receptionist that Dr. Abroon had determined despite his original agreement with me, that he NOW wouldn't prescribe this medication for me. There was no explanation. For those of you interested in Dr. Abroon, know that he will not see you without a negative covid test administered by his office and for which he charges. I was told that I would receive an explanation directly from Dr. Abroon about this sudden unilateral change of mind when I was in the office. The next day I came to the office expecting to receive an explanation and was told that I would need to see a specialist for this medication. When I asked to speak directly to the dr. I was told he was too busy to speak with me. Personally, I doubt he was very busy because he is down to one receptionist and not another person or patient was in his office when I was there. I think that Dr. Abroon had no good explanation to offer for his arrogant and cavalier decision and did not have the character that permitted him to speak to me directly about it. Suffice to say, this behavior combined with all the other matters I referred to above led me to the conclusion that I could no longer have confidence in Dr. Abroon for any purpose and I determined to discontinue my relationship with him. If you are looking for a new Dr, I recommend you skip this Dr., I believe this demonstrates that it is time for him to retire. read more

I hope this review helps anyone who is considering going to this practice or referred to it. Let me start off by saying that I did not choose to see this doctor. I was referred by my surgeon to have medical clearance by this practice. I've visited the practice of a total of 3 times. On my last visit, which is why I'm writing this review, I had a bad experience with this office. I went in for my pre-surgical testing. I paid my copay of $30 because this doctor is a PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN (PCP) and he is IN-NETWORK with my insurance. At the end of the visit after all my testing was done, I was told I would need to pay a $400 pre-surgical fee because this was the doctors office policy (which I never saw in writing) and once my insurance paid them they would reimburse me if they had gotten paid for services provided. What the practice failed to know was that I also am a medical professional and I also have experience with billing & insurance and I'm not an idiot. I left and got reimbursed my copay and went to my primary PCP who only charged my copay and not some phony pre-surgical fee they made up out of no where (mind you I had been to the practice twice before and they failed to even mention this to me until I got there and wasted my day). I will never come to Dr. Abroons' practice again even if you paid me. As a medical professional you should not try to get over on someone just because you want money in your pocket and you should also remember your patients because the last two visits he didn't even remember me. Before you go in to see a patient it isn't that hard to remember them if you reviewed the chart beforehand. Also, as an office practice you should of called me (your patient) prior to the appointment to inform them of this magical fee you required and called to confirm their appointment the day before (which they have never done the 3 times I have gone). I've never had to deal with that ever at any practice. I have insurance and I am required to pay my copay and that's it. I reported them to my insurance. So this practice can take their b.s fee that you try to charge patients and bill that to their insurance company so you can get your check. That's how it works. Sept 2010 - Was 5 stars - Dr. Abroon was recommended by a friend when I moved to NY. I have been his patient for over 3 years. He is a wonderful doctor, is very kind and thorough. He will never hesitate to get the extra medical test when I am concerned about something. I never have a problem to get an appointment, or referral - Rebecca in his office was a gem - let's move to May 2016 - This review is now 0 star - I am leaving his office after 5 years because he does not return calls! takes personal calls about his mother on MY time in exam room and he has the most incompetent staff who does not return calls, does not answer emails. So, D-O-N-E! I liked him until a few months ago when his staff sent a bill to a previous apartment and billed wrong insurance. Out of concern, I called (never returned calls), wrote a note with proper insurance info and address which they had. Got a call after about a month later. I had a visit a few weeks ago and received medication samples that had expired, called Dr. Abroon day after on 5/10 and to this day, never got a call back. Staff does not call or answer emails. When I asked staff why Dr. does not return calls, I was told "he is busy" STAY AWAY! read more

I agree with the previous reviewer that things have changed over the long-term in this office. There is a lot of office staff turnover and less regard for patient service and courtesy by the physician. I'm also turned off by the recent provision of aesthetic services in his office. This no longer seems like a serious practice to me. I would not trust the specialist referrals. read more

I have been seeing Dr Abroon for over 5 years. He is very knowledgable and kind. I have also been able get appointments within a day or two usually.He also referred me to other specialists when there was a need. Their office also has an ultrasound equipment to do certain tests. Overall he's a great Dr. I also recommend him to some of my friends and they were happy as well. read more

I was using Dr, Abroon for 17 years. No more. Think he's losing it. The turn over staff is unbelievable...seems he can't keep anyone. I have come to realize he does not give a darn--tho i thought he did. Last time I saw him (for about 12 minutes), I was waiting for him to write a script, and wanted to ask a question. He Screamed at me in front of his staff and people in waiting room..."go home" he said, "I've given you enough time" I was floored, dumbfounded, shocked and any other adjective you care to include. I was also saddened, as I thought he cared about me. He seems like a sweet, caring, quiet man...WRONG!!!!! Now, after 17 years, i have no doctor...and this is not funny...and he could care less. Stay away--he does not deserve your patronage I am sad to write this review..... UPDATE!!!! I give 0 stars. Before leaving his practice, I had a blood test..he told me everything was fine. When i brought the results to my new FANTASTIC doctor, she told me I was VERY low on vitamin D and pre-diabetic. So much for his fake raving reviews. Also on my last visit, I was having excruciating pain in my knee--so he said I should have a sonogram. I turned out having a torn meniscus---that only an MRI would have shown--thank GOD I changed doctors. read more

Would give a zero star if possible. Never have I had a more degrading experience with a medical "professional" before. Abroon assumed that I had medical issues simply because I was overweight. After checking my blood pressure, he said: " It's good, I'm shocked". When asked "why?" he mentioned with a "duh" tone- " Because you're overweight!". To assume my health based on my appearance is not only wrong but insensitive and unprofessional. I would not recommend this "dr" to anyone nor would I go back. I'm the most fortunate person in the world. Dr. John Abroon has been my internist for over 20 years now and it is a great pleasure to say that he's been of enormous help and support for me all this time. I have never been disappointed or felt rushed by him or that my needs are unimportant. He is a fabulous diagnostician, but if he is unsure, he has sent me to specialists. One time I was in so much pain with a disease that pain was its only symptom. He immediately helped me and sent me to a neurologist to check out what was going on. He called back when I was in an ER out in NJ four nights out of five in another episode. Sadly, the doctors were not attentive in this hospital and Dr. Abroon set up an appointment with a pain specialist in NYC for me by the next morning. Dr. John Abroon and his staff do all in their power to accommodate my schedule with theirs. I find him to be extremely smart and caring. I have the utmost respect for this man. read more

I have lived in NYC for nearly 25 years. Married with 2 kids, I've seen a lot of doctors. A LOT. My experience with Dr. Abroon and his staff has been, for over 15 years, exemplary. My calls are returned (including emergency calls on weekends). Last minute appointments are accommodated. Over the years, he has referred me and my family to various specialists and then *asked* about our experience. When we were not satisfied, he made new referrals. He is warm and personable. As close to a small town "Doc" as you're going to get in this town. He's always been "in-network" but, at this point, we'd still see him, regardless. read more

Update: On Aug 30, Rachel becomes a very competent staff now !!! Today I discussed with her that my insurance finally issued a check(approved my claim) to the biller, and discussed the total amount Dr John Abroon office will refund to me since I have paid the Doctor fee in full (225 dollars) in the beginning of Aug. To my surprise, Rachel quickly talked to the Biller and double checked the amount of refund is correct (230 dollars since 5 dollar difference for the copay , and gave me a call back in next 20 minutes. I had been going to Dr, Abroon for a few years and never experienced a problem. However, on the last two visits (6 months apart) he did not initially order the appropriate blood tests. Prior to having my blood taken for the second visit, I pointed out the omission from the first visit and was reassured it would not happen again. When it did, I told Dr. Abroon who said I should find another doctor and not return to him. That result showed I had blood in my urine and he was adament that I immediately leave his office, at this very difficult time, having just received this unexpected result. I have never experienced such unprofessional and uncaring response from any physician in my life. read more
