My family and I have been patients with Dr Jay for over 15 yrs, when he was in the Coram office but since moving to this location in Central Islip the professionalism regarding the receptionist has tumbled for the worst. I had received approval for work to be done so when, I received notification from my insurance company that it was approved,I called and spoke to the receptionist who said the person who was familiar with my chart wasn't in the office. I called the office as a follow-up and the person " familiar" with my chart said she forgot to call me and she's been going thru a lot with her father being in the hospital. I give Dr. Jay and A+ and his from office a F -

"Meh. I've experienced better" is exactly right…read more The women at the front desk were very nice and helpful. This review is solely on the actual appointment I had and the experience. To cut a long story short (I like to say that, but that never actually happens) I was going to a GREAT dentist, but switched over because they didn't accept my new insurance. Googled a few places and came across this one, I didn't really do much research, it was one of the first options that popped up. Day of my appointment, I thought I was coming in for a cleaning, well - turns out it was just x-rays. Okay, cool. I sat in the chair, dentist comes, says hello and does the x-rays. I ask him a few questions and he's mumbling. I couldn't hear him, and he repeated what he said, but again - so low and mumbled. He kept saying "they'll tell you at the front desk" and that was it, walked out. I don't know about you, but I like my dentist to be friendly, tell me whats going on in my mouth, what I need, etc. Nope - he cut it real short. Barely said 5 words to me. The front desk tried to squeeze me in, but they're so booked - i was looking at a month out just for a cleaning! I then decided to check yelp reviews, and a family member laughed when I told them I came here, they said "didn't you check the reviews? I hope you're just passing by it & not getting any work done" Lucky for me, my old, favorite dentist - now takes my insurance. So I switched back over!

I have been going to this location for a few years, and unfortunately, my Dentist left the group…read more My Hygienist, Natalie, is always exceptional! I visited the group on Wednesday, October 16, for my six-month cleaning, and Dr. Michael Wakily was assigned to do my checkup. When he entered the exam room, he did not introduce himself; however, trying to bypass that oversight on his part, I joked that he came highly recommended as my regular Dentist left the group. Dr. Wakily examined my mouth and found three cavities. I asked if it was possible to have the three cavities repaired the same day, which he affirmed could be done as it would only take 30 to 40 minutes. He also indicated he would forward the information to the front desk, after which he left the exam room. While in the exam chair, a lady approached me and presented paperwork indicating the amount covered by my insurance and my out-of-pocket cost to repair the three cavities. I explained to the individual that I had overpaid on at least two prior occasions when immediately paying out-of-pocket costs calculated by Smilist East Islip, as confirmed by the Explanation of Benefit (EOB) that I receive a few weeks after every procedure. I further explained that in none of these instances, I was reimbursed by Smilist. On that end, I asked the individual if they could bill me when they ascertained the amount I would owe, as I had no problem paying it. The individual explained she would check with the doctor (Dr. Wakily) and get back to me. No more than two minutes later, the individual returned to the exam room and explained that I would have to wait until the bill was submitted to the insurance company, at which time I would know my exact out-of-pocket cost, which would be a few weeks. Here's the kicker: The individual said Dr. Wakily would only do the procedure after my out-of-pocket cost was determined. My problem with Smilist East Islip is that they seemed overly concerned about money, I/O the patient. No one truly heard me regarding my overpayment scenario. I have always paid for my out-of-pocket costs without incident. Instead of taking the time to understand my situation as a patient, they preferred not to do the procedure, even after it was affirmed that it could be done the same day. I have worked in corporate America for over thirty years, and every time I had a conversation with one of my clients (large and small), they would always tell me that customer service is more important than costs. Smilist East Islip needs to be reminded of that critical fact! Smilist East Islip lost a long-standing, good-paying customer today!

I've had a really frustrating and honestly disheartening experience with Great Expressions Dental Islandia. I originally went in for a routine cleaning that my insurance covered, but I was told they wouldn't do the cleaning unless I agreed to an out-of-pocket "deep cleaning" that I've also been told by their hygienist that I don't actually need. I was told to wait six months and then they would do the routine cleaning without requiring the deep cleaning, so I did exactly that. I came back for my appointment yesterday, and once again, they refused to do the cleaning. That already left me feeling really uncomfortable and pressured. On top of that, this has become a pattern. About six months ago at my last appointment, I was told they couldn't do my cleaning because the hygienist had left early. The next time, I was told she was "too busy" to fit me in, even though I had scheduled the appointment months in advance. Every time I go, there always seems to be a different reason why the cleaning can't actually happen. Yesterday, I showed up and was again told the hygienist had left early. I don't understand how this keeps happening when patients are already scheduled. Then I was told to come back today specifically for the cleaning. I made the appointment, and I was already on my way there when I received a call shortly before my scheduled time saying they would not do the cleaning unless I agreed to the same "deep cleaning." This is something my insurance does not cover because it is not deemed necessary, and I've been told by the hygienist herself that I don't need it, it was just recommended. I've also had appointments where I've waited a long time past my scheduled time, only to be told last minute that things were changing again. It honestly feels really upsetting and frustrating to be on my way in after rearranging my day, only to be turned away once again for the same reason. I always try to be understanding, but at this point it feels like my time and care aren't being respected or prioritized, and that's been really disappointing. Just sharing this in case it helps someone else advocate for themselves or think twice before booking with Great Expressions Dental.
