I have been going to this location for a few years, and unfortunately, my Dentist left the group. My Hygienist, Natalie, is always exceptional! I visited the group on Wednesday, October 16, for my six-month cleaning, and Dr. Michael Wakily was assigned to do my checkup. When he entered the exam room, he did not introduce himself; however, trying to bypass that oversight on his part, I joked that he came highly recommended as my regular Dentist left the group. Dr. Wakily examined my mouth and found three cavities. I asked if it was possible to have the three cavities repaired the same day, which he affirmed could be done as it would only take 30 to 40 minutes. He also indicated he would forward the information to the front desk, after which he left the exam room. While in the exam chair, a lady approached me and presented paperwork indicating the amount covered by my insurance and my out-of-pocket cost to repair the three cavities. I explained to the individual that I had overpaid on at least two prior occasions when immediately paying out-of-pocket costs calculated by Smilist East Islip, as confirmed by the Explanation of Benefit (EOB) that I receive a few weeks after every procedure. I further explained that in none of these instances, I was reimbursed by Smilist. On that end, I asked the individual if they could bill me when they ascertained the amount I would owe, as I had no problem paying it. The individual explained she would check with the doctor (Dr. Wakily) and get back to me. No more than two minutes later, the individual returned to the exam room and explained that I would have to wait until the bill was submitted to the insurance company, at which time I would know my exact out-of-pocket cost, which would be a few weeks. Here's the kicker: The individual said Dr. Wakily would only do the procedure after my out-of-pocket cost was determined. My problem with Smilist East Islip is that they seemed overly concerned about money, I/O the patient. No one truly heard me regarding my overpayment scenario. I have always paid for my out-of-pocket costs without incident. Instead of taking the time to understand my situation as a patient, they preferred not to do the procedure, even after it was affirmed that it could be done the same day. I have worked in corporate America for over thirty years, and every time I had a conversation with one of my clients (large and small), they would always tell me that customer service is more important than costs. Wow. These reviews are very interesting. I went there this spring and was told I needed 2 root canals and 2 crowns. And had it done at $2500. I recommended my wife Rachael to them to fix a tooth another dentist failed to fix and came home to tell me she needs 3 crowns and was given a quote of $3100.00, hmm I am going to have a 2nd opinion for her and will report back. read more

What is with these reviews? Seems like most are from before it became a smileist location. All i can say is i haven't been to the dentist in 15 years. Had slight pain, and they addressed it IMMEDIATELY. I've always had the runaround with insurance, but i was notified UPFRONT of possible costs if i continued with a filling or root canal. Unfortunately, i needed a root canal (i figured since the cavity was so deep, i can put my tongue in it), but i was treated with respect after asking for all possible options. I decided to go with the canal and couldn't be happier with the results so far. They now have become the reason I left the Smilist in Bayshore. More interested in making money than doing the honest thing. Just got a bill for x-rays because they were done to soon and the insurance company will not pay unless there is one year in between. I should have been told this before they took any x-rays. If they waited 6 months when I was due for these certain x-rays it would have been covered by my insurance. Went today to get my permanent crowns on and they charged me for $320. I was so confused on how I owed money but was in a rush to get back to work. When this was East Islip Dental with Dr. Rosenfeld, it was wonderful. Once it was taken over by Smilyist it went downhill. It shouldn't take 4 months to get an appt for a cleaning. Beware! I went to this Dental group as a new patient with a sensitive tooth. What was only an old, chipped filling needing replacement (average cost $50.00) I was told that it needed to be capped ($1,500.00). Furthermore, a second healthy viable tooth with no complaint was also recommended to be capped at an additional cost of $1,500.00. I was recommended over $3,100.00 of unnecessary dental work! After a second opinion with another dental practice the chipped filling was replaced costing me $53.00. Always, get a second opinion for expensive dental work. I just moved to East Islip, and this is by far the best Dental Practice I have ever been to. I have been there twice in the past few weeks they made sure I was able to get in twice before the end of the year so my insurance did not lapse. I went in for a cleaning and the Hygenist Sheila, was amazing she made sure I was not only informed but went out of her way to make sure that everything was taken care of. When I went back to get cavities filled, one didnt show up on the xray and Dr Yang was able to handle it right there instead of making me come back a third time. I have been with this dental office for many years and they had a merger with The Smilist company, and there are a few Smilist Dentals. The staff were not all friendly after the changes and you felt the change. Now, just made a year, I received emails within the past 2 weeks stating that I had a $40 balance, mind you a couple of the emails went to spam but when I realized, the date of what was owed it was a year ago and they stated that insurance did not cover all but the balance is $40 so they want the payment. Ok, understood but had a busy week and received constant ridiculous amount of emails this week. I was waiting for the end of the week to paid the $40 balance, and could not believe they want to send me to collections??? Seriously, it took a year to be informed of a balance but less then a couple of weeks for collections???? WOW, NEVER HAVE I EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE, POOR BUSINESS! East islip dental has changed from a professional dental establishment to a high pressure sales used car lot. I went in for a routine cleaning and was encourage to do an elective cosmetic procedure which cost several thousands of dollars for no medical reason, without any second consultation or time to evaluate my decision. I literally went from a cleaning to signing away a bill and I'm the chair for this procedure within an hour. A true medical professional would have given me all information, recommended a second opinion, and allowed me time to process. I now have several temporary caps in my mouth with my former teeth peering through the cap slicing my tongue and causing unnecessary problems physical and emotional damage. I have been a patient for years and now an disgusted with this practice and have made a decision in the moment which I regret and can not change. This is not a dental practice, it is high pressure sales and a conveyor belt of rotating procedures. Came in Sunday for an emergency, infected wisdom tooth. Was told I could take antibiotic but opted not to. 2 days later, it is worse. I need the antibiotics. I called in for them, several times. Was then told I'd have to wait until the doctor was back Sunday, which I knew was BS. Then was told had to see surgeon. Then I finally said "I am not paying another dentist to diagnose me when I was just there, I need the infection gone before the wisdom tooth could be removed." DO NOT GO HERE. It is a scam. I went in for a tooth ache and a cleaning. They told me I needed to redo all of my fillings and a root canal. I made an appointment for the problem tooth where they redid all of my fillings EXCEPT THE PROBLEM TOOTH. By doing so they maxed out my insurance and now I am left with the problem tooth. I have been going to East Islip Dental for a while now and my last experience was quite disturbing g to me. I had a consultation for an implant with their periodontist who comes into the office once a week - he tells me I need an additional procedure before I can get the implant. This procedure was an additional $2000! And, I would have a 6 month healing period before I could get the implant. That just didn't sit well with me so I went back to the periodontist I used for my gum treatments (his specialty is implants but thought I would go to my dentist's office for the implant) - I had a second opinion with Dr Scharf in Babylon and low and behold I did NOT need that additional procedure prior to getting my implant! Dr Scharf had prepared the area 2 yrs ago for an implant, but, I could not afford it at that time. I had my implant done today at Dr Scharf's office and I am so pleased, no complications, all went well - and I saved $2000!!!! It isn't all about the money, if I needed it fine - but, 6 month healing period too for something I did not need!!!! Dr. Rosenfeld needs to speak with his perio guy and tell him since he represents his practice to please make sure that he is giving the correct info to patients and not look to make extra bucks off the patient for procedures that they DON'T need!!!! And, the periodontist dr had one of the dentists there come over, glance in my mouth and CONFIRM that I indeed needed that unnecessary $2000 procedure. I rarely leave reviews, but definitely had to as seeing some of the older reviews may be a little off putting. This office is amazing. From the minute I walked into the office I was greeted with a welcoming smile and hand shake. The office is very clean and the staff here is extremely professional and knowledgable. Every person I came in contact with was friendly and made sure I had the best experience possible. I have been having tooth pain for a while and after failed attempts to get it fixed at other dentists, East Islip Dental quickly found the problem and helped me the same day! For the first time I actually felt like a dentist cared and took my pain seriously. I do not like going to the dentist, but they quickly put my mind at ease and even went as far as offering a blanket for when I was getting my procedure done. Also, I wanted to note that the online scheduling system is great. I was taken back almost immediately after arriving. I wish I could give this guy ZERO stars! This man has permanently screwed up my mouth. His dental work is extremely shoddy and he uses cheap materials. I dont even know how he manages to stay in business in general let alone own his own practice. I had two cavities on the left side of my mouth filled by him, his execution is awful. He filled one tooth so poorly that I can literally floss UNDERNEATH the tooth. I have to in order to keep food out. I even went back to have him fix it and he only made it worse. NEVER AGAIN! On top of that, the filling material itself feels cheap. I've had other cavities filled by other dentists (out of state) and they still felt like a natural tooth. The Staff is consistently friendly helping ease the anxiety often associated with dental work. Roe the biller is fantastic and a pleasure to speak with always. The wait time was perfect, just enough time to brush my teeth quick before going in. Dr. Apostol and her assistant where amazing! She keeps a very calming environment throughout the procedure, consistently checking in on me asking if I'm doing ok. She has a raw talent in her field, executing her work flawlessly in a timely fashion. After the procedure my bite was perfect and pain free within an hour of the novocain wearing off. The staff could not be more friendly and welcoming. Therese was an absolute sweetheart and the cleaning was quick, thorough and pain free. Dr. Boerger was amazing as well! I've been going to the office for quite a while and not until the end of the year did problems start. Unfortunately the office staff lacks knowledge of knowing their jobs. Having no regard for their own mistakes they insist on you dealing with the consequences. Not one member of the staff call for preauthorization before committing to a procedure, all they see is dollar signs. Sad but true. I was pushed and assured i had enough money in my insurance policy to continue the work i needed when in reality i did not. Admitting and owning up to making the mistake of not calling ahead for pre authorization i finished my procedure and was handed a bill of $600 when my insurance would've started over in under 20 days. They now tell me it's not there problem and i was never "forced" into continuing with the work needed even though i was ASSURED i was covered. My advice is to look elsewhere because this seems to be an ongoing problem with Incompetence. read more

Overall not a very good experience. Being someone with no insurance I found their prices to be extremely outrageous and unfair. I left there feeling as if they were only interested in money and not their patients. I don't know how their drs are but I wasn't very happy with the snotty dental assistant that tried to convince me that the reason they were so overpriced was because they used the best dental tools and the drs went to the best schools. I know of other dentists that use some of the best tools and went to very prestigious schools that aren't looking to empty your pocket to receive good care. read more

I think the reviews are a little outdated maybe? I recently switched to this dentist and my first two appointments were great. My first appointment was pretty standard. The hygienist tried to make the cleaning as painless as possible. I was informed I had 5 cavities. They offered me appointments two and three days later to take care of them. Today I had 3 filled. The dentist knew I was afraid and was very kind. She listened when I said i wasn't numb enough and took care of everything. Besides a slight discomfort towards sensitivity, it was pretty tolerable and fine. I requested that she does the other two tomorrow. Everyone has different experiences and I am hoping the other reviews about "messing up to make more money" are false but I think I finally found a dentist I really like! read more

First off I want to state that the Dentist Himself isn't a bad guy, He is the most expensive dentist I every been at bring your gold card. The hygienists here run the show period! If you're taking a lot of time they will stop what they're doing and tell you to come back. For example while being a new patient got a whole new x-rays and she started to scrap my teeth. BING! The staff is courteous and the office is clean. The dentist himself is a really nice guy and a friend of mine has had a lot of success here. They are extremely accommodating to your schedule because the hours of operation are so convenient. I have gone twice, once for myself and once for my son. In both cases we were referred out. The case with my son, the staff claimed that they do work with Pediatrics. While this is true, it is not at a level where they have the capacity to sedate or do actual work besides check-ups. My son had tooth pain and ultimately needed an extraction. I waited and after a quick x-ray they admitted this was not a case they would take. It personally was a waste of time. After expressing concern, they were quick to refund me for the x-ray, which was appreciated. CHEATERS. They said my preventive care dental cleaning costs nothing and convinced me to take the service, then later they sent me a bill. I double checked and specifically asked them if I have to pay anything out of pocket, they clearly said NO. When I called them to check they said it's my insurance company who applied the deductible. They should have tell me that upfront, then I can take a decision if I want to do the service or not. If it's their mistake then they should write it off. I hate these lies to get service. I'll never suggest anyone nore go there anymore. And on top of the bill these guys added a late fee on their first bill itself, saying it's over 30 days.
