Years ago, John Muir was known for being one of the best of the best. Now it feels like every day there are more service cuts and fewer ways to actually connect with the people taking care of you. You can't even call your doctor's office directly anymore you're routed through a call center where the person on the phone doesn't know you or your care history. Appointment times keep getting shorter too, sometimes feeling like doctors barely have 10 minutes before they have to rush to the next patient. Healthcare should be about relationships, trust, and time with your doctor. Watching a system that used to be excellent slowly lose those things is really disappointing. read more

The specialists are great. If it weren't for the specialists, I would rate this with 1 star. Superb specialists that I have seen. BUT... for Primary Care, that's another story--all calls are routed through a call center. (The specialists are not.) I needed to contact my PCP for urgent but quick questions in recent times related to short-term disability for surgery I just got. My call automatically goes to a call center and my average wait was 15+ minutes just to talk to the call center. Then I have to leave a message for my PCP's office. Then they call back when I'm not available or they write a message in the patient portal. So I have to call back and go through the same thing again. It is an absolutely sucky business model and does not serve the patients. It is a bad patient experience. I gave this feedback to one of the call center people and she gave me a number to call to give feedback there; and then she got kind of defensive on the phone. She should have been more understanding that people are trusting John Muir Health with their health care and all we ask is to speak DIRECTLY to our providers. But John Muir puts a call center there and we NEVER get to speak to the people in the doctor's office directly when we first call in. The only way we can talk DIRECTLY to our primary care practitioners is to receive a call from THEM, AFTER we have left a message with the call center (for which we often must wait 15+ minutes to speak to an agent). And if the doctor's office calls you back and you are not available (since you don't know when they will call you), then you're screwed because you have to return the call again to the call center and go through the same routine of waiting, then leaving another message. I was trying to get a simple message through to my PCP's office regarding my short-term disability and I still do not have it resolved after three days of trying to contact them. John Muir may be saving money by having a call center, but patients are the ones who are getting the shaft of very poor patient experience and stress. The specialists' offices are different--it's been easier to speak to the specialists' staff. But I was told that the primary care doctors ALL have to go through the call center. It slows down service, wastes patients' time, and creates unnecessary stress for patients, especially when we just need a simple question answered. John Muir needs to re-evaluate this call center model. It's not a good one by any stretch. I am seriously considering switching my PCP to a different medical group simply because of the poor patient experience with the call center. I think John Muir really needs to change that business model, stat. read more

Overall, the medical care provided is quite disappointing and leaves much to be desired, giving an impression of being merely a name. The care, performance, experience, communication, and management are all shortcomings that significantly impact patients. During overnight hours, the absence of management and the presence of more security personnel than medical staff create an environment that feels more like a prison than a hospital. The staff's inexperience further contributes to this harsh atmosphere, making it understandable why patients might feel neglected, frustrated, or unsure if they are receiving the proper care. read more

I'm extremely disappointed with the communication and professionalism we experienced here. When I called the hospital to get information about my father's condition and care plan, Nurse Carlos was very rude and unprofessional and ultimately hung up on me. Our family is already dealing with a very stressful situation and we simply needed basic information about my dad and the next steps. We also need this information to arrange caregivers for my mother. Being treated so dismissively while trying to advocate for a hospitalized parent was upsetting and unacceptable. On top of that, we have left messages for the doctor and the case manager and have received no response. The lack of communication from the care team has been extremely frustrating. Families deserve respect and clear communication when a loved one is in the hospital. I hope the hospital addresses these issues so other families do not have the same experience. read more

BILLING DEPARTMENT is rude, doesn't listen, doesn't have competent staff, barely answers the phone or perform callbacks, and is slow to issue credit due. I was hung up on when I tried to call to find out why they sent me a check to see what it was for. A check they profusely dented sending me. It's scary to know people like this are working with patients' sensitive information. I won't mention the employee who doesn't follow through and the one that hung up on me. They don't want to be bothered and if the evidence and information you have on your end is not in their system it doesn't exist. Incompetent. And from reading some of these reviews, other people have had bad experiences with the billing department. Obviously the higher-ups don't know or care to find out how their billing department is operating. I tried to put in a formal complaint but the complaint hotline is disconnected. If I could give zero stars, I would. Our experience here was a disaster from start to finish, and I would never recommend John Muir to any family bringing a child into the world. Our birth plan was completely ignored. No one seemed to be on the same page -- staff repeatedly asked about circumcision and newborn injections (hepatitis B, vitamin K, etc.) despite everything being outlined ahead of time. We specifically requested to keep our placenta, and we never received it. It was obvious that no one was actually following our wishes. The hospital itself felt sloppy and unprepared: I reported my lost wallet to a nurse, and no one ever followed up. The "guest Wi-Fi" was slower than my cell data -- unacceptable in 2025. The toilet in our room wouldn't flush, and we were told the batteries needed replacing to make it work. We were placed in the wrong room. Worst of all, staff called my hospital room phone at 3:30 PM on a Friday to demand payment before the billing office closed -- two days before we were even discharged. This was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime, special moment for our family. Instead, John Muir made it stressful, frustrating, and deeply disappointing. They do not listen, they are disorganized, and the overall quality of care was shockingly poor. Avoid this hospital if you value being respected, heard, and properly cared for. read more

While much of john Muir physicians network are outstanding doctors let me tell you about a couple of my experiences. A few years ago i was feeling really bad, I called my doctors office and he happened to be on vacation, and although they could not get me in to see a doctor a nurse practioner ( Karen Sonnenthal ) was available so I took it. In the exam room I told her that i have felt like this before , i have diverticulitis I know the feeling. Her response: Ill make that determination! She sent me home with suppositories. REALLY? About a week later when my doctor returned he sent me in for the proper radiology and low and behold diverticulitis. She's Awful don't see her she wont listen to you!! Terrible She's a .......ll...?? Believe me. KAREN SONNENTHAL - HORRIBLE Don't erase this yelp, it happened its true Another experience was when i had a kidney stone, ultimately the urologist treating me decided to break apart the stone with some kinda sound wave where i was put out. Well it didnt quite work and he had to go in and physically remove the pieces that were still to large, and 30 days later my nut swelled up to the size of a grapefruit. They left some bacteria in me that gave me an infection and on pain killers and anti inflammatory and antibiotics for two months. I shoulda sued over that one. Lets be fair Dr toma orthopedic surgeon is an amazing Doctor- replaced both my hips and he WALKS ON WATER as far as im concerned. Record keeping is terrible. They recently failed to find and upload my Advanced Care Directive even though I hand delivered it to them. They double billed my $10 copayment for an office visit and failed to record my latest COVID vaccine. Even worse than the fact of this gross incompetence, they were rude and unwilling to fix the errors. Avoid them! read more

I went to Urgent Care at John Muir earlier this month for an eye conditon. The doctor knew i had an eye condition before he saw me; I believe the admission clerk told him (can't be certain about this.) He came into the exam room wearing a mask. I asked him for his name but couldn't hear his reply. I asked again. He tore off the mask quite angry. He never examined me at all. He had made up his mind that I had conjunctivitis -- I think before he came in the exam room. I told him WHY I thought I has an infection in my eyes. He did NOT listen. He said come back and see me in a week. Since then I have seen my PCP (ZOOM visit) and taken anti-biotics but I still have an unknown condition. I need to see a real eye doctor on ENT but now I have to be seen by my PCP before I can do that. This is NO way to practice medicine IMO. Very poor response and follow thru. read more

0 stars. I'm in the John Muir system and overall it is a terrible experinece that is not focused on patient care nor wellness whatsoever. In my most recent escapade with them, I was at John Muir PT and they booked an appointment for me to go to Urgent care. I went right over on time but they told me I couldnt just see any probider I would need to see a doctor so therefore I would have to wait for a hour an a half until the Dr returned from lunch. When they got me in, the provider wasn't a doctor. So much conflicting information, no answers, and they put incorrect information on my medical record, which has been an absolute run around to try to get corrected. They didn't solve the issue, it got worse and I had to go to ER the following day for the same issue. John Muir ER was terrible, they told me protocols and then didn't follow them, the doctor who came in to see me didn't look at my bloodwork nor record. One doctor told me I absolutely needed a CTA, the next cancelled it. I was unhooked and told to leave to receive a call an hour later asking why I left. It could be a major heath risk, and I have not received clear information nor answers. When I try to follow up I can't get a response. This has been an ongoing issue for years. If you can go somewhere else that cares for patients you should seriously consider doing so, you wont get it with John Muir.​ read more

I had a very disappointing experience during my appointment on April 7th, 2025, with Dr. Andrew Cheung, DO, at 200 Porter Dr, Suite #300, San Ramon, CA. From the moment I arrived, the medical assistant, who is blonde and works under Dr. Cheung, displayed aggressive, uninterested, and dismissive behavior that made me feel uncomfortable and frightened. The medical assistant never introduced herself or informed me that she would be administering a COVID test. Things only worsened during the COVID-19 testing. She simply told me to pull my mask down and said, "This isn't going to be fun." She never once mentioned that she would be doing a COVID test or a throat swab, and she didn't explain what tests would be run or why they were necessary. Her overly aggressive approach caused pain and injury when she inserted the nasal swab too deeply, causing bleeding. The throat swab was similarly forceful and painful. When taking my blood pressure, she failed to perform the procedure properly, inflating the cuff and then quickly removing it without obtaining an accurate reading. She never placed the stethoscope like one does when taking manual blood pressure. She also used the wrong size cuff, and instead of properly taking my blood pressure, getting the correct cuff size and recording the result, she fabricated the reading. The assistant was rude, rushed, and unprofessional, slamming doors behind her and showing no interest in my well-being. When the doctor arrived, he was kind and apologized, but the blood pressure reading issue was never corrected on the discharge form. Later, the doctor said the manager would come into speak with me, but after he left, the blonde medical assistant returned and confronted me in a very intimidating manner, asking, "Do we have a problem?" in a tone that felt confrontational. I was shaken by her approach, and instead of offering a genuine apology, she attempted to justify her rushed behavior, claiming she had to attend to another patient. Her response was dismissive and unprofessional. Her appearance back in the room frightened me, as the doctor had told me the manager would be in, not the medical assistant to confront me about my complaint about her. The practice manager, Vicky, dismissed my complaints, suggesting that I was simply having a "bad day," and minimized my experience, failing to acknowledge the serious issues I raised. The practice manager then seemed to defend the medical assistant as if they were friends, mentioning that the assistant had worked there for 15 years with no complaints, and that she herself was a medical assistant for 40 years. She even explained that she was just in a hurry. To which i replied, "they should not schedule me an appointment if they cant take the time to explain the procedure, or properly take my blood pressure, or even introduce themselves" this is no excuse, and there is no reason to rush. It only takes a few seconds to introduce yourself, and explain a procedure. I guess she was trying to justify there was nothing wrong with how i was treated by saying this? Didn't make sense how that was relevant in the moment, and raises more concerns about her lack of concern over her employees behavior towards a patient, given all of the experience she claims to have. This statement that the blonde medical assistant had no complaints in 15 years is false, as there are multiple reviews online with similar complaints about the same medical assistant, who works under Dr. Cheung, highlighting ongoing issues with her behavior and procedures. What's even more concerning is that this particular medical assistant has received negative reviews going back six years, with several patients complaining about similar mistreatment and her aggressive behaviors. It seems that the practice is not taking these complaints seriously, and the assistant's behavior continues to harm patients. Despite the doctor's kindness, the lack of professionalism from the assistant and the practice manager was disturbing. I was left feeling unheard and disrespected, especially disappointing in an institution like John Muir Health, which has a strong reputation. I sincerely hope the practice takes action to address these issues to prevent future patients from experiencing similar mistreatment. I also believe a reimbursement for this visit is warranted. Crazy to pay for care and then be treated this way. I hope no one else has to experience the mistreatment I received during my visit. People who display such unprofessional and aggressive behavior should not be working in the medical field. I sincerely hope John Muir Health takes this complaint seriously and takes action to ensure better care and professionalism in the future, especially for patients who are unable to advocate for themselves or who feel threatened and scared, as I did, by behavior like this. read more

Due to having many, many billing issues and bad extremely treatment at Kaiser, I switched our insurance so we could use John Muir thinking it was better. In summary: It's not. The doctors I've been to have been underwhelming, to say the least. The benefit of John Muir vs Kaiser is that I can at the very least see my assigned physician. However, the care received is underwhelming. I literally had to educate the doctor on my son's condition because this person had absolutely no idea what the issue was. I also found some of the nurses to be fairly rude. One had asked me "Who are you talking to?" when I was talking to my son while changing him for the appointment. Yes, this kid can't talk yet but - seriously? He's still a human being. Why would I not talk to him? Going to Urgent Care has been surprisingly complicated. They're not letting you book online so you have to call and then go through a long questionnaire of questions (many of which are repeated) just to book along with instructions on where to park and how to enter as if nobody has been there before. The process takes 15-20 minutes just to book an appointment. Additionally, it's a bit annoying when I call Urgent Care and they ask me: Have you contacted your PCP? Answer is always no because it's pretty much impossible to get in touch with your PCP. I will actually give credit to Kaiser on that one, because I never had as bad of problems getting in touch with my PCP with them as I have with JM. Also, the communication around getting referrals for other providers has been non-existent. I was supposed to get a referral for a specialist 3 weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything and it's really hard to get in touch with the PCP who submitted the referral to get any kind of update. Again, I never experienced such lack of efficiency and this kind of communication problems with Kaiser (again, I can't believe I'm actually giving Kaiser credit here). I've been attempting to get a MyChart account setup for my son so I can access his chart. I spent a good 20 minutes on the phone just to set it up and that after all of that they somehow still had my son's information wrong so I've had to message them afterwards so they could find his file. It's been 2 weeks and I'm still waiting. Earlier this year when we were seen through county I got a MyChart account for my son and it literally took a day for them to set it up for me to access it and I didn't have to sit on the phone for 20 minutes to set it up. It's insane that John Muir (the "better" provider) can't setup a MyChart account for you in a reasonable amount of time. Also, I don't know why this is a problem but it appears that all the departments within John Muir don't update your information somehow. I've gone in and used Urgent Care along with seeing our PCP and that information was all up to date and correct. However, for some reason, MyChart still had contact information that wasn't up to date -- how is the communication between departments this bad? It's truly baffling how they managed to make this network so convoluted. read more

John Muir has always been my favorite and "no one else will do ", until this last stay. I had back surgery with a supposed 2 day recovery. The first days were what I would expect, then things went downhill from there. I couldn't walk and needed help changing positions or help going to toilet. I would ring and wait. Once, I had to wait 1 1/2 hours for someone to come help me the aide finally came She was helping 10 patients. While the RN was busy working on paperwork. I felt like I was in an old rehab facility where patients resort to yelling screaming trying to get some attention. When I was to be released, I was handed a small stack of papers with "some" instructions and sent home. Was told that home services would get in touch with me. This was Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving I never heard from the "shower aide", not the OT until Just this week dec 2. 7 days with no help nor any check in calls!Obviously a holiday! No service no calls.... I did get a visit from a PT who was the only contact with anyone; to Answer questions or to receive instructions of what to do. I had to figure out what to do on my own. I felt completely dumped! Ok, operation done; fees collected; OUT. On your own. I couldn't even get ahold of Dr. scary place to be. Medicine is no longer nurturing nor caring. John Muir sold out!!! Subject: Patient Experience My husband FELL in the restroom with a nurse present! If a nurse cannot support a patient, they shouldn't assist a patient that is a fall risk. My husband had his finger amputated, and had two surgeries on his leg, which is and was AN OPEN WOUND. He was dizzy, in the bathroom, the nurse was present. HE FELL. Also tore up is elbow badly. The nurses NEW "secretary" was BEYOND RUDE, mis-identified me, AND my husband...causing extreme and unnecessary stress to us both. Although she had my ID, and my husband and I have the same last name!! INCOMPETENT! I was denied entry to the 4th fl trauma unit that my husband was in when a woman came and took my ID, told me to wait. She came back and said "he doesn't wanna see you."/ "and the social worker said so too" I didn't understand....Two beds in room, the OTHER patient was a gunshot victim. NOT MY HUSBAND. Since my husband and I have the same last name, she had my ID, does she read? I was hysterical. I didn't understand. A nurse from the day before came out, and said what's going on? Why are you crying? She said stay here. She came back and got my ID from mean woman and said she's new, I'm sorry. Come in. read more

I found it very difficult to schedule an appointment - they couldn't find the order ("we have too many faxes"), then they said a pre-auth was required when it wasn't (I had to call my plan to find this out), then they said the order was wrong when it wasn't, then it was a tedious call to actually get an appointment. It took a month and multiple calls to get an appointment for a 15 minute procedure - they can surely do better read more

First off: I have no issues with my doctor or the health care provided. In fact, while I can fully appreciate and understand the pain and frustration with having medical issues misdiagnosed, it's not fair to blow up a hospital because treatment doesn't work. Doctors are just humans. You've heard the joke, too: "What do you call the person who had a C- grade average in medical school?" "Doctor." What I do take issue with is how grossly incompetent the billing and administrative staff are. It's outrageous. How can an entire organization be so disorganized and filled with complete idiots? Oh, that's right... by egregiously and excessively billing insurance and patients, that's how. Just read all the reviews here, and 90% of them are with billing and other administrative services. There are some real issues with staff not taking patients' concerns seriously, and that is also unacceptable. But the mountain of hate is for billing. The other reviews here have worse situations than mine. I went in because I was getting pain when I applied pressure on my toes. It was dull and progressed over weeks. I went to see my PCP and he said it looks like evidence of a foreign object that got caught just shallow enough to not notice, then worked its way deeper. He said he can take care of it. I said I could just go home and try, but he insisted that he would try since he can use safe and sanitary tools. That's good care. Then I got the bill for $500 (I know, at least it's not the thousands of other folks) of the $700+ charge. It was coded as dermatological removal of a foreign object, a specialized procedure. I was never asked to authorize that, and honestly, why should my doctor have to do that? He's trying to keep me HEALTHY. I jumped through all the hoops, and I get an email from their dispute department that it was coded correctly, and besides, they cannot approve wellness visits for first time appointments by new patients. Their internal audit *by management* was based on my doctor writing the words "initial encounter" in the visit summary. He clearly meant "initial encounter *of this issue*". I have seen this doctor for a year. I sent an email back with screenshots of all my appointments and my doctor's status as my PCP saying that it is fundamentally false that this was a first time appointment. I went in presenting with minor pain as a wellness visit. Their response? "We don't know why your doctor said first visit, but either way the audit resulted in the correct code. The decision stands. Thank you." So, as dozens of others have said here, this is the place for you if you want to learn the ins and outs of medical billing and want some first-hand experience with how completely and fundamentally broken our health care system is. I had a procedure to look at thyroid done recently. When John Muir gave me the estimate, it was not accurate at all. It said insurance would cover all of $7000. When I received the billing, I winded up paying over $1000 from my own pocket. I called to ask and they said I was responsible for finding out the copay from my insurance company. If this was the case, why would they tell me the cost was 0? Or they should at least state that in the estimate that I should find out the real cost from the insurance company. The procedure included an ultrasound and that part was not even mentioned in the original estimate. Just like another person has mentioned, there were multiple bills showing up later from another outfit that I needed to pay. I used to like John Muir but now I don't trust this hospital at all. They are not transparent and I feel the cost of going to JM could be a bottomless pit. read more

If I could I would give the whole John Muir system hospital along with doctors in John Muir groups a negative 10. My animals get better care and compassion along with timely care then John Muir provides their patients. When did people become so devalued. Didn't the doctors take the Hippocratic Oath. Well now that Oath is to follow John Muir's rules and being loyal to John Muir which is not providing appropriate care to patients or get them timely care. Most the specialists do not care about their patients. They are trying to follow the 15 minute rule. Move those people in and out. Anyone that may have a more difficult situation that would require more time; too bad. Most won't jeopardize their jobs with John Muir and they have thrown the Hippocratic oath out the window. Has any John Muir doctor ever referred you to a doctor outside the John Muir system even though there are much better doctors? I sure haven't. The doctors I've seen have generally been good, and I've been happy with the care itself. However, the billing department and administration is simply impossible to communicate with when issues arise. Minor issues often arise with insurance and with other providers I've had no problems dealing with them. With John Muir, however, emails, phone calls, or messaged questions go nowhere and it is impossible to resolve the simplest thing. They make every effort to prevent issues from being resolved and they do not respect your time. I would find a different provider. read more

Thus is a review of John Muir "Emergency" services. Probably the worst I've ever encountered and, hopefully, will ever encounter again. In short, a wait of 4 -1/2 hours for 30 minutes of treatment. Sitting in an examination room throughout the day (dinner time came and went) with nothing being done to address my issue or contact with anyone capable of doing so, is not my idea of emergency service or, for that matter, any kind of service. Horrible. My mother was admitted because she needed surgery but had many complications that delayed that surgery. I took no issue with that. I trusted her surgeon (who was very good despite not being very clear in his communication). However, she ended up being there for many weeks before surgery was performed and in that time she just got weaker and weaker due to the fact that she was not given physical therapy. She was even weaker after surgery, and they STILL did not get her up and walking. As a result, she now has to be in a care facility closer to home so she can regain her strength. Another thing I didn't care for was the hired security staff outside. Each time we came we felt like we were being signed into a prison facility instead of a hospital. They were almost to a person rude. As you walk up, they are usually chatting with other security staff using foul language and acting as if they are at a party rather than doing their job. I got the impression most times that I was interrupting them. And they are not consistent. Some days you have to show your ID even though you've been visiting for weeks. Others don't seem to care and simply hand you a nametag and buzz you in. Most concerning is how my mother was treated most of the time. She is a very kind, gentle person who happens to be very hard of hearing but very few of the staff took that into account, even when I was right in the room and told them. They would merely address me rather than my mom, as if she wasn't even there. All they had to do was speak up and on her left side. One nurse was fantastic, so shout-out to HANNAH, but I would say most of the others that I saw were just okay, or subpar. My mom's requests often went unfulfilled for hours or ever at all. When she would hit the call light, someone would ask what she needed, but the nurses took their sweet time in responding. Most irritating is the complete lack of communication with family members. Throughout the seven or so weeks my mom was there, I spoke respectfully to several staff members about it, including nurses, doctors, hospitalists, case managers, social workers, and patient advocates. Each person agreed that communication needed to improve. Especially given that I lived two hours away, and my mom was hard of hearing (as well as confused at times due to medication, etc)... but it NEVER improved. One nurse had the gall to tell me I could feel free to call and ask for updates but they rarely call unless things were going poorly... and ironically this was after my mom had a bad case of a-fibrilation. If there was an option of giving this network a 0, I know of a lot of people that would. Sloppy service!! Billing errors after billing errors and no acceptance of responsibility to change. I am in collections with Labcorp because after three months they are tired of waiting for the Dr Office to change an incorrect billing code. I have communicated with the billing dept and they say they fixed it, but there is no proof of submission of billing changes. Now they finally tell me deal with the Dr!! What is going on with John Muir health?? After four days of a high fever, sore throat and bad cough, I called my doctors office to make an appointment, and lo and behold, they are closed for the Presidents' Day holiday. A little after 9 AM, I called John Muir Urgent care on treat, and I was told they had no appointments Available. Of course, I was not happy, so I asked if I could walk in, and I was told I could, so fever, and all, I was there an hour later. I was told they would not see me because they have no appointments available. I told her about my phone call and that I was told I could come in as a walk-in. The woman at the desk told me that was misinformation because they generally don't accept walk-ins, And when they do, it's a very long wait such as 2 to 3 hours. I told her I wanted to be seen today and I would wait until 5 o'clock, or their last appointment and wait as long as I need to, and she told me they close at 2 o'clock. That's another thing the call Center did not tell me. The woman at the desk had no compassion for what I had been through and how badly I was feeling, and the fact that I needed to leave town on Thursday for my son's engagement. her comment was, "I understand that, but we cannot see you until tomorrow." If this place is called, urgent care, why in hell do they not take walk-ins? If all the people who were there had appointments in advance, I imagine the care they needed wasn't urgent. Their appointments must've been made ahead of time. I called an advice nurse, and I received the same runaround. I called Blue Cross and talked to an advice nurse about where I can go today, and she gave me the number to CEP in Concord because I told her I wanted to go somewhere that was independent of John Muir. She assured me they do take walk-ins. When I called the number, it was the number to John Muir medical Center. They transferred me to CEP where I learned they do not take walk-ins at their URGENT CARE facility!!! It's disgusts me that John Muir has such a monopoly on so many of the medical facilities in Contra Costa County, and they do not provide walk-in services for people who have been waiting days to see a doctor. read more

Being at the mercy of the nurses on 5 West was a nightmare. They were uncaring and rude. They were bullies. The exceptions to this were Anca, Lisa and Kathy who were wonderful. I had a nice room but the floor looked dirty and was sticky. The food was pretty awful as well. My previous experiences at John Muir were all good so this was disappointing. The worst part was being treated the way I was when I was so sick and in so much pain. My doctors were wonderful but the nurses, like I said, were a nightmare. read more

The John Muir Emergency Room is the reason that health care costs are becoming unaffordable. I went there on 11/27/23 and was there for about three hours, most of the time by myself. The Physician spent about five minutes with me, she took two phone calls during those five minutes. They never were able to diagnose what was wrong with me and sent me on my way. John Muir billed my insurance company $13,000 for their services and Blue Cross paid then over$8,000. The services they provided me were worth about $100. The John Muir employees aren't even that nice most of them are lazy and overpaid because John Muir can bill insurance companies anything that they want to. read more

If I could give -10 star would have. I went to this place with rash on my legs, pain blister, itchiness and infection After seeing urgent care which the treatment did nothing for me as the rash was growing. I waited 2.5 hours to be seen. Once I got in I was seen by a very RUDE and inappropriate PA ( Brianne E Prescott). As she walked in she said " Why are you even here!? You went urgent care yesterday just use the meds given to you? I wonder why they didn't give you antibiotics already!?" I was stunned. I tried to explain why as my symptoms are getting worse. she DID Not care and did want to hear it and said , you were seen yesterday. My legs were wrapped with bandages she did not want to open or look at it my husband opened it you up and she did not bother to touch or examine it. I stated, can I tell you the story, Trying to show her the video of what happened She shut me up saying " I Do NOT have time for your story." My husband tried to get her attention about my legs, she said " just take antibiotics and if it doesn't get better in 2 days then come back here." And with a sarcastic tone said " don't go to urgent care again. " I said I'm allergic to penicillin, she dismissed it and said the one I'm giving you it's not it, just take it. She put me in 2 different types of antibiotics. 5 days later I almost died due to allergies to meds. ( coughing, shortness of breath rash to my mouth and tongue enlarged) Yes I did NOT go back there, went elsewhere to be saved. 2 week later I'm itchy all over my body and have rashes still with marks all over body and spend over $$$ on meds and taking steroids to calm my body down ( don't let me start on physical side effects and missing out work) Just because she did not want to hear me look at my wind she missed on Poison oak and treated me all wrong and cost me money time and a lot of health complications which I'm still dealing with Worse person ever PA ( Brianne E Prescott) I will copy her name in any page I can. See her run away. You will be billed for no service provided. Yes $$$ bill for her, disrespecting me, my husband, not even looking at my injury and treating me with something I was allergic to. Never again. Ps there is no such a thing as patient relation, or satisfactory, a BS online firm which they never reach out to you. they don't give a damn about complains. read more

The billing department is awful they give you different amounts each time that you owe if you're making payments and you talk to a different person each time on the phone that tells you something totally different the billing department as a joke!!! I've made several payments and they won't tell you where they go but the bill does not go down. read more

I still believe I'm owed for personal injury when in the ER on 11/4/22 for Anaphylaxis when my stiff-person syndrome was so bad I couldn't move my arms or legs (yet one of the two doctors--one of whom I had proven made a false diagnosis--was assigned to me and said I had full movement in all four limbs? Didn't examine me. Didn't do anything. I was sent there via ambulance from an oncology center with all the paperwork on what happened and asked me questions about things I wasn't conscious for--I have all the notes. Second doctor decided to for "diagnostic purposes" forcefully straighten my right arm which is a big no-no with Stiff-person Syndrome which, if they just accessed UCSF's records--which they can since they did it for my CSF leak, odd....--had to use enough strength and force and time to get my arm straight while I begged him to stop. Your shitty contracted doctor (because your ER doctors are not employees--people need to know that)--used FND language to invalidate my rare diagnosis but also could not have made any sort of limb assessment on movement without manipulating the limb since spasticity and rigidity are two very different things. He used plasticity and my neurologists and primary's wtf faces when I told them that...lol. Anyhoo their internal investigation on these contracted doctors that will never see the light of day because it would most likely lead to a class action lawsuit of neglect, mistreatment, misdiagnosis, injury, and other things. Also, still love how your nurse lost my partner's covid test after she realized he was gay. Real classy. Oh, and when I said I had stomach pain still and you brushed me off? Yeah... I was hospitalized for a week and a half at the beginning of February at another hospital. Turned out that your poor treatment and ignoring an acute flareup of inflammation turned into a months' long SPS attack that dropped me to 75% of my body weight. I have been a Kaiser patient for years. Due to an insurance change, I had to choose John Muir. So far, I have not had any good experience with John Muir. I think Kaiser has spoilt me and has set a high bar for customer service. Right from the moment of getting an appointment, finding a primary care physician of your choice, or an OB/GYN doctor has been a hassle. At my location, I don't have a choice for a female OB/GYN and I'm stuck with a male OB/GYN that I am not comfortable with. The worst is that your Kids' accounts don't get added to your account automatically and you have to literally email with some forms (how advanced!!) in PDF forms to get your children added to your account as proxy. To make this worse, agents monitoring the emails don't even read the email sent and ask you to submit the form that you just attached previously!! Can't wait until next year beginning where I can switch over to Kaiser. read more

They have lied to me about which tests they have run. Went in for lung pain thinking it might be an infection. They drew some blood and said that they tested it for anything infectious and it came back negative. Because of this I stopped quarantining. The lung pain persisted so I went to my doctor where I learned the hospital had not run any tests for infections and in fact had only tested for blood clots and a pregnancy test. It turns out it wasn't an infection but they had no way of knowing that since they didn't run the tests and therefore they put me and the people around me in danger by saying it wasn't infectious when they just didn't know. read more

Can't say enough about how disappointed I have become regarding JMH. The latest occurrence was in January. I had gotten an X-ray at JMH Concord Campus. I gave them my new Insurance card. I was very Ill and needed a chest X-ray. Very soon afterwards I get a bill from them. Not feeling well I proceeded to pay it online. I get my insurance statement showing my insurance paid it too! You'd think JMH would refund my payment immediately but you'd be wrong. I finally was well enough to delve into and spoke to someone recently, now in May. I will have to wait up to 30 days to get my money back from a bill that should never have been sent to me to begin with. It would appear that they have become too big, don't have competent or caring employees and just don't give a damn. read more

Their medical staff (doctors and nurses) are great and their facilities are clean and modern BUT their billing department is run by one or two women who honestly sound like they didn't pass 5th grade. I've had to call in so many times because of incorrect billing issues. They've billed the wrong insurance, they've billed no insurance at all, it goes on and on. The staff in the billing department are inept and lack the skills required for their job. They bring the whole institution down. Literally, because of how irresponsibly the billing department is run, I am looking into switching medical care providers. read more

JMH Billing is the worst. I have Cigna insurance. JMH has pending insurance invoices 6 - 7 months old as I write this review. I have called billing numbers they provide and I am told bad phone numbers that don't work, customer service phone rep for the number printed on the invoice who tells me that can't help me. Cigna rep even tried to conference with JMH billing and we experienced the same thing. The billing people are rude & the typical response is I can't help you. The Cancer Research Center merged with JMH in August. Since the merge, the billing to insurance has been horrible. The doctors are some of the best in the JMH group. But....if you are waiting for invoices or trying to resolve doctor coding errors and billing questions - go with Kasier. read more
