Fun in the bar after a long day !

Terrific fun weekend playing tennis, making new friends, and hanging with the pros... great food, great bar. Don't worry if it rains; they have covered courts!

I was here with a group from UTSA for just an overnight but our group had a great time. The lodging was very cool, we stayed in condos that looked over the tennis court and we each got our own rooms. We didn't spend much time in the rooms but they were comfortable for a camp. The dining area could use an upgrade but food wasn't bad. The pool looks like it is well maintained, our group loved it. They have a great setup here!

It has been my pleasure to spend two weeks at Newcombe, one this April and one last, both times for professional conferences, and my experience has been very different from the previous reviewer. What worked: 1. the cooperative nature of the staff. Whatever you want or need, they'll do their best to make it happen. 2. The clean and comfortable rooms (though the beds are admittedly a bit soft and the towels have seen a lot of washing). 3. The comfortable meeting room. 4. The brand new pavilion for outdoor workshops. 5. The swimming pool and hot tub - clean and inviting. 6. The many picnic tables on the multi-leveled deck. And of course for those who care about it, the many many many tennis courts. What was sort of okay: 1. The food. For our group, with a wide variety of dietary needs, this is the most cooperative conference center we've found -- but the food remains "okay", not great. And -- why was the bread always always stale? 2. The acoustics on the main lobby/bar area can be overwhelming when there is a crowd. 3. The stairs you had to walk up to get to the dining room (though admittedly you could walk farther and go around the building). There were about 60 of us there for the week and overall we were very happy. I look forward to going back next year.

I came here for a work conference. It seemed like a good idea, but didn't end up so positive. I do not recommend having a professional conference at this location. The boarding: The rooms were decently big and full-sized. The bathroom was small and the shower drain was slow. We had to kill bugs inside our room. Thank goodness we had air conditioning! The food: Nothing to brag about. I feel like they were those powdered eggs that you add water to and serve. They did have a variety, but it was normal camp food. The bugs: Are everywhere! I know it's Texas, in the summer, but I had to spray myself with repellent so often! UGH!

Proof of the best tennis weekend ever.

One of the best weekends, EVER, HANDS DOWN! Best value for 4:1 ratio clinics with amazing pros. I'm pretty sure I hit a million balls. Food, pool, entertainment and more tennis. I love this place and look forward to this annual weekend with tennis friends.

Simply WOW! I'm not sure I can name all of the professionals that deserve recognition for exceptional service at the adult weekend camp. I've never played tennis but wanted to learn, so a quick search for "Texas tennis resort" brought the wife and I to John Newcombe's camp for my birthday weekend. Even with no experience a herd ;0) of amazing professional tennis pros not only kept us laughing, but never made us feel out of place and actually advanced us a years worth of experience in 3 days. We have already signed up for a couple of weekends over the next year. I'm hard on customer service as you can see from other reviews, but there was not one thing negative about our weekend. Good food, good people and a great price. Stop thinking about it and book your trip. Get sweaty, play hard, dance, drink fast and be "Rock Solid"! Huge thanks to everyone at Newcombe Ranch.

There were a few different types of rooms to choose from and we chose the Penthaus 15 because it was on the River. This room is not for tall people (we are not). Choose another room if you're tall! We loved that it's all original buildings from 1800s in the area. Had good plumbing and amazing AC (thank God!) and quite a bit of charm. Please note this is not a bed n breakfast anymore. But The Pantry is a part of the main office and they serve breakfast for reasonable prices. My lox and bagel was amazing and my husband's taco was delicious. Breakfast was a local affair. So many people and everyone was small town friendly. We sat on the porch but there were tables inside and on the back patio. The Texas Pecan Coffee was so good I bought some to bring home. Location of the mansion was perfect! We never even got in our car all weekend!! Shops, live music, bars, parks, river tubing was all within a few blocks. So close that if we needed to cool down (June in TX with no ac in some shops and restaurants) we would just swing back to the room for about 15 mins, cool down, and then keep going. So much live music to enjoy. I see some reviews that complain about music at night but we were not bothered by any of it. We had to strain to hear anything outside our room. The Inn provides earplugs but we didn't use them. We've already promised each other to come back again in the fall when it's a little cooler. And of course we will stay at the Gruene Mansion Inn.

Check-in was at 3:00 p.m. and we arrived around 3:25 p.m. only to be told our room was not ready. We were assured it would be available in 30 minutes, but it wasn't ready for nearly two hours. After such a long delay, we expected the room to be thoroughly cleaned. Unfortunately, it was not. There was hair in the shower, the countertops, cabinets, and microwave were dirty, and one of the TVs was not working until we fixed it ourselves. On our second day, after spending the day at the river, I called to request fresh towels and was told the hotel had completely run out and none would be available until the next morning. Our room also lacked paper towels and extra toilet paper. In addition, the lobby had a strong sour odor that remained throughout our three day stay. This experience was well below the standard we've come to expect from Homewood Suites. We hope management addresses these issues, as they negatively impact the guest experience. We have always chosen Homewood Suites, but the next time we visit New Braunfels, we will stay elsewhere.

Parking was so easy just steps from the front door. Our room was very clean. Loved the fireplace a few things that really need to be noted, is how close the hotel is to everything. It is an amazing location. We walk to our dinner reservations. They also serve wine in the lobby in the evening. The breakfast served in the morning was so good! The view from our table of the pool and the river was just beautiful. At breakfast, we all loved the yogurt parfait. It had crushed pineapple and kiwi. They had sausage, biscuits, and gravy, beautiful quiche, Pastries, so many beverage options. Everyone was so impressed. We all very much enjoyed our stay at the Gruene River Inn.

It always had a welcoming, rustic, hill-country feel to it that matched the surroundings. Our last stay I was really disappointed at the changes that had been made to the decor mostly because they make no sense and did not improve the property in any way. I sincerely hope that the owners did not pay for this decor design. It's pretty awful. (And kind of funny bc it's ALL over the place). What used to be rustic and charming now seems to be modern (gold fixtures, tiled shower, trash cans) asian (black trim, bathroom doors, headboard fabric), kitschy (lasso bedside lamps- that aren't good for reading and don't dim), with a 50's retro flair (the refrigerator and the blue tooth), and modern cowboy art on the walls. Yet, no one thought to include charging ports for electronics! It's so confusing. They pulled out the nice big tub and put in a shower that doesn't have a door and has a shower head with no pressure and no direction to it- so to say it plainly, it's difficult to get clean! Amongst all the changes perhaps fixing the toilet so it doesn't randomly run might have been a good choice. One of the reasons we use to like to stay were the delicious breakfast tacos that were provided. I don't know if they will come back or not as the lobby was under construction, but based on the decor choices my guess is they will make some equally terrible decision regarding the lobby and maybe do away with it all together? Who knows! What it has going for it is that the views are amazing (thankfully they couldn't change that or my guess is they would have)! The bed was comfortable and the towels were top notch. Maybe if you've never been before you won't find it as disturbing but I just had a hard time reconciling the fact that they paid to make the place worse. We might have to find different digs when we're in the area.

After the situation, the hotel manager that day did call to let us know how sorry she was and would work to try to make the situation right. Mr. Patel, the hotel owner, called and said he would reimburse us for the weekend with rewards points (we stayed two nights and this happened at 8 am the first morning). He rewarded us HALF the total for the weekend, meaning we are still going to be paying for this traumatizing experience out of pocket. I understand the rate for points for different locations can change, but when I look up their rate, I can see that we only received enough points to cover ONE DAY. We will NOT be going back.
