Newks is the place to be if you want to improve your tennis skills. The coaches are amazing with the kids on and off the court(s). They make tennis more fun. My kiddo has been to 2 camps this year. Both times, she almost didn't want to leave. That shows you how much these kids enjoy being at the ranch. Her game has definitely improved and is more confident on the court. Add to that the friends she has met from all over. I hear the food was pretty good as well. Yes, the accommodation could use a little sprucing up, but they are clean and safe. I have to say Fossil Phil and his team are an awesome group. My daughter is already looking forward to attending her next camp. read more

I visited John Newcombe this past weekend on a retreat with the student group that I advise. This was my first visit to a tennis ranch and it did not disappoint. Located just outside of San Antonio in New Braunfels, I got some serious Dirty Dancing vibes with the scenery and amenities. The conference room was large enough to fit all of my students and the specific seating required for our retreat purpose. The courts, basketball and tennis, were great for team bonding and competition! The food was amazing! I enjoyed pasta night and the savory breakfast tacos. But my favorite meal was the salmon, which was actually my first time trying! It was sweet and tangy, but not as flaky as other fish. The snacks were also amazing, hummus, cookies, tea, lemonade, veggies, so many options. Really well done! The condos/cottages were very spacious and clean. The beds were comfortable, I slept so well! Can only review the structures and amenities because we were just there for a weekend tournament. Many of the tennis courts are in very good shape give the age of the place, but it would be helpful if there were scoring mechanisms on them since the place does specialize in tennis. The food there is not good. No different from that at a generic children's camp. That would be fine if it was cheap, but nothing there is cheap. To the contrary, everything is so expensive. Moreover, the parking situation is so chaotic. I realize that big events with lots of visitors are not the typical fare there, but the chaos of parking is so frustrating. read more

I was here with a group from UTSA for just an overnight but our group had a great time. The lodging was very cool, we stayed in condos that looked over the tennis court and we each got our own rooms. We didn't spend much time in the rooms but they were comfortable for a camp. The dining area could use an upgrade but food wasn't bad. The pool looks like it is well maintained, our group loved it. I just returned from a week long adult tennis camp with 13 senior friends at Newk's Tennis Ranch. The instructors Nick, Josh, Rochana and "Tuna" were extremely accommodating and positive (as was every employee we came in contact with) and provided us with a very beneficial and entertaining week. The facility is located on 50 scenic acres in the Texas hill country, the rooms could be considered a little rustic but were spacious, comfortable and clean; the food was good and plentiful and the bar had a good selection of brews, wines and spirits, a karaoke machine and a friendly bar tender named Jamie. My five star rating reflects the overall value compared to California and Florida based camps and I definitely look forward to returning soon both for the tennis game improvement and fun. read more

It has been my pleasure to spend two weeks at Newcombe, one this April and one last, both times for professional conferences, and my experience has been very different from the previous reviewer. What worked: 1. the cooperative nature of the staff. Whatever you want or need, they'll do their best to make it happen. 2. The clean and comfortable rooms (though the beds are admittedly a bit soft and the towels have seen a lot of washing). 3. The comfortable meeting room. 4. The brand new pavilion for outdoor workshops. 5. The swimming pool and hot tub - clean and inviting. 6. The many picnic tables on the multi-leveled deck. And of course for those who care about it, the many many many tennis courts. What was sort of okay: 1. The food. For our group, with a wide variety of dietary needs, this is the most cooperative conference center we've found -- but the food remains "okay", not great. And -- why was the bread always always stale? 2. The acoustics on the main lobby/bar area can be overwhelming when there is a crowd. 3. The stairs you had to walk up to get to the dining room (though admittedly you could walk farther and go around the building). There were about 60 of us there for the week and overall we were very happy. I look forward to going back next year. read more

I came here for a work conference. It seemed like a good idea, but didn't end up so positive. I do not recommend having a professional conference at this location. The boarding: The rooms were decently big and full-sized. The bathroom was small and the shower drain was slow. We had to kill bugs inside our room. Thank goodness we had air conditioning! The food: Nothing to brag about. I feel like they were those powdered eggs that you add water to and serve. They did have a variety, but it was normal camp food. The bugs: Are everywhere! I know it's Texas, in the summer, but I had to spray myself with repellent so often! UGH! read more

Our family attended Newcombe's Tennis Ranch in July and we learned a lot and had a great time. My husband and I stayed in a court side condo and my 11 and 13 year old boys stayed with their respective groups in a cabin or dorm. The condo was a little old, but the bathroom had been redone. The kitchen was old, but we never prepared a meal there, so it didn't matter. Bring plates cups and utensils because not much is provided. We had a washer dryer which we used daily. Our only complaint is that we were on the 2nd floor and even with the a/c full blast, the room would get warm. Our younger son stayed in a cabin with three other boys and their counselor/coach. The beds are pretty roughly made and I was glad my son was on the top bunk because I could just imagine the whole thing collapsing. Thankfully that did not happen! Their bathroom was pretty dirty from day one with dust bunnies and no hand soap in the bathroom. We went to the store to get them soap so they could at least possibly wash their hands. The dorm my older son stayed in was packed with boys (about 20 or so) and I didn't get to look around much, but my older son didn't complain about the dorm. I hope he had hand soap. He's not a tennis player, but learned enough over the week to place 1st in his group for doubles. He liked the social aspect of camp. My younger son already played tennis, but what he learned at camp help him win a tennis tournament (singles) the following weekend. My husband is experienced and I am a beginner, but we both learned a lot and plan on going back next summer. The food was pretty good- no complaints. The pros- Ross, Hunter and Chris were awesome. We spent 2.5 hours on the court in the am (8-10:30) and 2.5 in the pm (1-3:30). The heat on the court in July was brutal but we survived with lots of water and plenty of breaks. I would recommend Newcombe's to anyone looking to improve/develop their game. read more

Attended a weekend camp for a girls weekend. A bit disappointed in the level and quality of drills. If you're an intermediate or advanced player, this is not it. The drills were very basic. I have been at Newcombe for no fewer than three university retreats, two with a student organization and once for a LeaderShape Institute. Simply put, Newcombe Tennis Ranch (to save space, I'll call it NTR from now on) is phenomenal. 1) The housing at NTR is fantastic (plenty of room for all sorts of accommodations, the average group I had to share amenities with was four, and no one was complaining about space) 2) The food at NTR is delicious and every day it is different. During my last stay in May 2011, I found that the menu had at least one new thing for breakfast, and every day dinner was a new theme. To keep this going for six days is difficult. To keep the quality high as well, that's a modern day miracle. In this "I want it done NOW" society, you don't see that often. 3) The activities at NTR are varied and challenging, but comfortable. I've been on two orienteering trips at night and a low ropes course during the day, and it's been awesome. 4) The camaraderie of the staff and the synergy that my fellow guests participated in is simply unmatched by anything else I've participated in. The "Touch of Australia" in the Hill Country only adds to the charm of the place. I don't anticipate giving many 5/5 ratings, but NTR is fitting to be the first to earn such a rating. read more

Just finished a week long adult tennis camp at Newk's while my daughter simultaneously did the kid's week long camp and I thought it would make sense to write an update. I cannot say enough good things about the kids' camp. My daughter had a ball and has already made me promise we are coming back next year. i can see this becoming a regular father/daughter week for us going forward and I could not be happier. The kids' programs were well run, inventive, high energy and I have already seen a demonstrable uptick in her game. if you have children who love or even like tennis, this is a great place for them to be. As regards the adult program, simply put, if you have the stamina (and desire) to be able to handle 6 hard hours of tennis per day in the Texas summer heat, I cannot imagine a better place to be. The tennis component is outstanding from the standpoint of facilities and instruction. Shout out to Coach Ryan who I thought did an amazing job with this broken down wreck. I went into the week telling him I needed a backhand and a second serve and I have that and more coming out. Fair warning that you need to be in good shape before you get here as I added it up and hit between 12K and 15K balls this week while I was here which takes a pretty good toll on your hands and feet, but if you can handle it, good on ya. That's not to say it's perfect. Probably the biggest drawback to Newk's is that it is not only a tennis resort, but also a conference center. The week that I was there, the tennis players were in the minority compared to the college freshman orientees, the dance squads, the corporate team building events, etc... This is a bit frustrating not only in that you have to navigate all of these groups, but also because, at least for that week, the non tennis people literally took every room in the resort and I ended up having to stay in a hotel in New Braunfels even though I signed up several months early. The other side of that coin is that there are no locker rooms for people who have to commute to use so if you need to change between sessions, there is no place to go other than a bathroom to do it and no place to grab a quick shower. I'm not docking them anything for this because everyone has the right to earn a buck and I knew about the situation before I made the reservation, but it is something you should be aware of. I do have to update one other piece. In my review of Newk's last Fall I wrote that the food was just average. Not sure what they have done in the kitchen, but this time it was outstanding. Shout out to the kitchen staff because it was really, really good. Great instruction in a great setting at a great price. Not sure what else you might want. Highly recommended read more

Very nice accommodations, except for the huge roach in my bathroom. But other than that, it was a great weekend at Newks!! Be prepared for LOTS of tennis. But hey, that's what you're there for. All the instructors were very nice, personable, and funny. You really form a bond with them. Totally worth it, fun, and learned too many things to implement into my tennis game. Food was surprising not bad. Overall, I would return in a heartbeat. I did go with my hubby and 2 other couples. It did make for more fun when you go with friends, but even if I went by myself, I would've enjoyed it. read more

My husband and I Just finished a weekend adult tennis camp here and had a great time. The entire weekend was filled with tennis, which is exactly what we were looking for. The ratio of pros to players was about 4-5 players per pro, which was excellent. The drills were well run and varied to cover a multitude of skills. Sol (not sure of the spelling), the director for the camp, did an excellent job organizing the event and keeping everyone pumped up. All the pros were very personable and took the time to help each individual improve their game. You can't beat the cost for this experience....very reasonable. Cost includes all instruction, accommodations, and meals. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because the sleeping rooms were just adequate, definitely nothing high end but worked fine since we didn't spend much time in there anyway!! The food was excellent. Overall, a great experience with lots of tennis. It was a great way to spend our anniversary!! We will definitely go back. read more

This place is the best. I attend a quilting retreat there every year. I know that sounds funny to attend a quilting retreat at a tennis ranch but thats where it is....the food is so good. The homemade chocolate chip cookies are perfect. I stay on a pretty healthy diet and, while they offer healthy options, this place makes food and desserts so good, by the end Im cheating with glorious cheesecake trios, stuffed sweet potatoes and hamburgers and Italian wedding cake or extra moist frosted brownies. There is a beautiful pool and jacuzzi. The grounds are secluded and peaceful. The few times we had issues they handled them immediately. And the staff is very friendly and helpful. There are mosquitos everywhere inside and out so be sure to bring repellent. If you are looking for an affordable, fabulous place for a group gathering or attending one of their tennis camps i highly recommend thia place. read more

My favorite place!! I'm writing this on my moms yelp page but I am a camper at Newks and I was there for 2 weeks and I had a blast!! I'm thinking about boarding there for school year round! What an amazing and unforgettable summer experience!! The tennis was amazing as well as the people! The food is good too! Haha it was amazing!
