A week ago, I attended my mother-in-law's funeral. At my father-in-law's request, I adjusted,…read morecropped, and made other necessary adjustments to the photos to be uploaded to the funeral home's website for a slide presentation memorial as part of the funeral package the family had purchased. The funeral home's upload portal was easy to use and had an option whereby one could add captions as desired. I chose to add two captions--both of which were directions to the person who would handle the download and final creation of the slide presentation. My caption/instructions were that one of the photos should be at the beginning of the presentation and the other should be in the middle. Said captions also included instructions to delete them. Because I've worked in the graphics industry for decades and have built up a healthy professional paranoia, I asked my wife to call the contact person to explain what I'd done and confirm that they would follow the instructions and delete the captions. I was in the car with her when she made the call, so I know the contact person did indeed understand and agree to the request. On the day of the funeral, we arrived early to bring food for the family and put that in a luncheon area set aside for such. I noted then that there was a rather lackadaisical atmosphere among the funeral home workers, but didn't immediately think anything of it. Then someone handed me the printed program for the funeral. I scanned through it and immediately found a grammatical error in the text. The line as printed was "I heart no more"; it should have said, "I hurt no more". Further investigation revealed that the poem had been given as a print-out to the funeral home personnel and must perforce have been typed in by hand by a funeral home employee. So, lack of proofreading--a simple enough thing for a half-page program. At this point, I'm beginning to wonder about that slide presentation. Sure enough, instructions were half-followed. One of the captions was removed, the other was there, bold as you please. Now, either of these things alone, I'd be willing to give a pass. But the two coupled with the lackadaisical attitude I noted earlier? A family spends upward of $30,000 for the dignity of their loved one's memorial service and has a reasonable expectation of professional service. These two instances are surely some of the easiest portions of the service to provide a grieving customer. And if you consider that these are only the visible mistakes in care, you must also wonder what has occurred behind the scenes which would give one pause. I think this was negligent behavior and I suggest that if you are looking for a funeral home which will get things right, you should indeed look elsewhere.

I "shopped" around visiting and talking to funeral homes to get the best value. I selected Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel and I have never regretted it. Because I chose their funeral home - I got FREE opening and closing of my our lots - a savings of $3,600! The staff were exceptionally nice - especially Kay. Recently a family member passed away and North chapel did the service. We couldn't be happier. I would highly recommend them.

After everybody that was there got to pay their respects they tried to close the casket but it would not close all the way. Me and my aunt walked in there where he was at and were talking then a lady that worked at the funeral home came in there and very rudely told us yall can not be in here and yall better not open that casket lid. My aunt looked at her and said lady we are not doing anything and we are not even touching the casket so leave us alone. If you are going to be in the funeral home business you need to make sure that you hire people who can be friendly in a time like this. Everytime I have ever been to this funeral home they have always been so rude, and hateful to people.

Great Locomotive Chase (Andrews' Raid) *1956, Walt Disney…read moreProductions: The Great Locomotive Chase *2019 Drunk History on Comedy Central: "Behind Enemy Lines" On April 12, 1862, civilian scout/spy James J. Andrews was the leader of a 22 man group of Ohio Union soldiers who volunteered to go behind Confederate lines dressed as civilians, steal a Confederate train (The General) north of Atlanta at Big Shanty, and drive it to Chattanooga, tearing up railroad tracks of the vital Western and Atlantic Railroad and destroying bridges and telegraph lines along the way so the Confederates couldn't send warnings ahead to other forces. After taking control of The General, they were chased by Confederate forces at first on foot, then on a hand cart, and later 3 separate locomotives, including The Texas (which was drove backwards), for 87 miles. Confederates eventually captured the raiders after their train ran out of steam. Some were able to flee while others were arrested and executed as spies, including Andrews, who was executed by hanging on June 7 in Atlanta. On June 18, seven others who had been transported to Knoxville and convicted as spies were returned to Atlanta and also hanged; their bodies were buried unceremoniously in an unmarked grave. They were later reburied in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Some of the raiders were the 1st to be awarded the Medal of Honor by the US Congress; however, as a civilian, Andrews was not eligible. The remaining soldiers were invited to Edward Stanton's office (Secretary of War). Stanton announced that the raiders would receive the newly approved Medal of Honor. Private Jacob Parrott was awarded the first. After the ceremony the 6 raiders were taken to the White House to meet Pres. Abraham Lincoln, which became a tradition for all Medal of Honor recipients.
