As a recent graduate who is on a budget, I was concerned when my older model Saturn SL2 developed some serious exhaust system problems--the car needed a new front pipe, a new muffler, and new hangers & straps. I took my car to two other shops to get quotes and was either hit with a huge estimate, horrible customer service, or both. In contrast, you can expect courteous and knowledgeable employees at JTMM (thanks again Trevor!). When I took my car in for a quote it took about 15mins, compared to an hour at the dealer and Midas. JTMM gave me a quote I could use when I decided to get the work done--none of this BS that the quote is good for that day only--and when I took my car in JTMM had it fixed in about an hour. I have a 2000 Subaru Legacy. A few months ago it started making an exhaust noise. On 5/18/2016 a "Nationwide Chain" muffler shop quoted $831.04 for repairs. The parts list included muffler & pipe assembly, exhaust gasket, and resonator & pipe assembly. On 7/14/2016 "John the Muffler Man" repaired my exhaust system for $95.04. It was for repair of "rear of ext pipe and front of axle pipe assembly". Upon completion the mechanic showed me the work that was performed which was replacement of a gasket. Needed a small pipe and a muffler for my '99 Ford. Went to a national chain and was given a total cost of $360.00 for Walker exhaust parts. I had them take it off the rack and I went straight to John the Muffler Man, 23rd and Wells and was quoted and installed the very same parts for $150.00. I do some work on my own car and knew this was a VERY fair price. Nice people, quality parts and installation and they will not repair what does not need repairing. So I go in to John the Muffler Man today, referred by a friend of mine, as I have exhaust smell coming thru my heat. They told me they would have to replace the whole catalytic converter and muffler as it had a hole by the flex by converter and it would cost a total of $803.31. I asked if they could just replace the area where the hole was and he stated no as it's all connected. So I go to the place where I always go, Velasquez Complete Autocare on 16th & Morgan and they replaced the converter, total cost $235.80. read more

I'm not sure what to think of this place, so I would give it 2.5 stars. The first time I brought my car in for an exhaust replacement, they held the car for 6 days, failed to return calls, and when I just showed up to take my car back, they admitted that they did not try too hard to find a replacement part for me, so my car just sat in their lot for a full week for no reason. However, the first time they had my car they were able to bolt on a full cat-back exhaust and fix a few minor things for me within about an hour, with excellent service and a very good price. Overall, I can't complain due to their prices, but I've had better (and quicker) service elsewhere. I would go here for exhaust and simple brake/tire issues only. read more

From out of town and wanted to get my son's car fixed. It sounded like a hole in the muffler. Took it to JTMM and he test drove it and then got it up on the rack. He told me it was simply a gasket issue and brackets. A quote of $90 was given and gladly approved. They did the work in the time frame estimated and for the quoted cost. I am one happy camper. When I was informed by my car dealer that I was in need of a muffler for my vehicle and I decided to stop by this business. When I stopped there the manager Mike had my vehicle checked immediately and gave me options in resolving the problem. I have taken my lancer to john for a variety of issues like a bad O2 sensor, brakes, brake rotors, tension belt, jammed license plate etc, and the service has always been super fast , honest , reasonable, and reliable. I would sometimes take the car in to them to look at for random issues, and they would inspect it and fix the issue for free if it didn't cost them parts or anything too cost or time consuming. They're always clear about explaining the problem, and frank about the charges and prices. The only thing they do not do is stereo installations, but they recommend another buddy of theirs which is a little distance away. Unfortunately I have moved away from Milwaukee and it is definitely challenging finding a mechanic shop as reliable and fast as john. read more

I went here the first time to have my muffler fixed. They did a great job!(5 stars) I decided to go see them again as my 4 runner was acting up, this time however, they let me down big time.i got there and explained the problem to the gentleman at the desk, who told me that there is a 45 minutes wait before they can get to it. (Fair enough). 45 plus minutes later, I walk inside and the older gentleman asked me to explain the problem to him, I did so politely. He then hands me a card and tells we don't fix this. Now I get it if you tell me this when I get there, but an hour later really? I understand that you had an hour left before closing, but don't tell me that we will take a look at it , just so that an hour later you give me then decide to tell me that ...This is no way to retain customers... read more

Great experience with John the Muffler Man. I went there this past Saturday around 10:15am and briefly explained my car troubles to the guy at the front desk-- a loud noise when I accelerate, and sometimes the sound of metal rattling around. He told me the wait would be about an hour. They were able to take a look sooner and diagnosed the issue (some part of my car's muffler had broken in half and needed to be replaced) all within about 30 minutes of me being there. They had the part in stock and replaced it within 20 minutes, and I was out the door by 11:30. I don't know very much about cars, but I felt that the amount they charged me was very fair. They didn't try to sell me anything else and only addressed what needed to be fixed, which I really appreciated. I highly recommend them. read more

This place is great! I usually have to prepare myself to go into auto shops ready to shoot down any up-sells, but these guys did a great job without all the nonsense. I got an oil change and asked them to look into an issue with my Jeep Wrangler. I recently brought my car back here when my brake warning light started coming up on my dash, thinking that I might be overdue for some new brakes. A friendly guy (Mike) informed me that I just needed some more fluid and that I still had a few months before needing a brake replacement. Love the honesty, love the service. I have been seeing these guys for years. I do not see them as much as I used to now that I can afford better cars in my old age! I have a 2007 VW Rabbit with 157,000 miles -- all original exhaust. So when it got loud as $*&# I took it in the next morning expecting the worse. Only $98!!! These people have ALWAYS been fair and upfront. Went to get my car checked out turned out I needed a new exhaust pipe because the one that on my car was broken in three different places and was corroded. I went to Burnham's Auto Salvage and got the exhaust for my 99 Toyota Camry LE and got it for $60. I went into John the Muffler Man and they only charged me $106 to put the pipe on. Originally they wanted to charged me $350 +tax but since I went and purchased a used one in good condition labor was cheap. My car was ready in an hour to an hour and half tops. read more

I came to JTMM because of the great reviews on Yelp, and I was not disappointed. I arrived 20 minutes before opening time on a Saturday and there were 5 people in front of me. Even so, my crossover was on a lift within an hour and repaired within 2 1/2 hours with new tie rods and alignment for $200 less than I was charged by someone else for the same repair less than a year ago. I usually do most of the work on my vehicles myself, not because I enjoy it, but because I don't trust many places to work on them. We inadvertently moved in across the street from John the Muffler Man when we first moved to Milwaukee and I had them do a couple of things because I didn't have the space or facilities to do them. They did an excellent job for a very reasonable price, and I've been to them several more times for exhaust and suspension work. I drove down here from the suburbs hoping to have my exhaust system fixed/replaced. There were a few people waiting outside and in the waiting room. There was no one at the service desk. I hung around the place for 20 minutes. Someone came to the desk to talk to someone about their car but was on the phone for another 20 minutes. I finally left to find a place that would just take my car and give me a loaner for the day. I would love to give this place a good review. The quality of work was fantastic. Very competitively priced and they were very honest about the urgency of any other recommended repairs (I was aware of their recommendations so I knew they didn't make it up). No appointment, had it fixed by the end of the day. 4 stars because I found the customer service and communication to be rather poor. I received multiple time estimates that had no credibility. This was significant because the repair was rather quick, but "we'll call you by 9:00 with a diagnosis" turned into "we'll call you by 11:00" which ended up being a diagnosis by 1:00. The communication was frustrating at the time but I would absolutely use them again and consider them a valid replacement for anyone used to your small-town shop. read more

Definitely recommend! So nice and honest and they try their best to accommodate you! I had problems with my ball joint and sway bar link and a couple other safety issues in the front end and I brought it in and they fixed it and answered all of my questions and were so nice every time I called. Something actually went wrong with my ball joint the next day and the parts and labor had a warranty on it so they paid for the tow truck to get it back there and reimbursed what I paid for ubers that day while they were fixing it. It helps that if they do make a small mistake, which I feel like doesn't happen often, to not go in yelling about it. The situation went so much better than I expected when I came back to them calm. My history : I worked as a Honda mechanic at a large Honda car dealer but don't do exhausts working on the ground anymore. I called four days prior and was told they could fix what was wrong with my exhaust, no problem. I got there at 1130 and was told to come back in a few hours so I came back at 1:15. Had to wait another hour just to have them look at my car. After showing them my own (not theirs, and they should have known better) diagram of the exhaust they said they couldn't do the work after all because it was 'too hard' to fix that repair. Give me a welder and a hoist and I could have done it myself in an hour. However I was told they could install a new part to the tune of $590. FWIW, I can buy the same part with a new gasket and clamp for $240 from a retail auto parts supplier. $350 labor to install a single pipe?? And this quote was after waiting for four hours twiddling my thumbs. Then I get panhandled twice in their waiting room : one by a guy that didn't have enough money to pay to get his brakes fixed on his SUV, and one by a street person who appeared to be a regular since he came in twice and the shop personnel made no attempt to throw him out. This guy then confronted me when I left and I almost hit him getting out of his way. Another head's up : you'll have to clean the driver's seat and the controls of your car after they work on it, since the mechanics I saw wore the filthiest coveralls I have ever seen in a car shop. If you're used to the gentility of a suburban shop environment, forget these guys. read more
