I have been a patient of Dr. Van der Werff going on 5 years now. I have had the pleasure of visiting his office on numerous occasions. Dr. Van der Werff has been extremely helpful diagnosing my problem and devising the appropriate treatment. His staff has, without exception, been extremely friendly and helpful. I, too, had an insurance issue at one point but, as is the case nearly 100% of the time, it was the fault of the insurance company in challenging the treatment and changing their minds about what they would cover. They told the office one thing at one time and another thing at a later date. After reading a couple of the other reviews, it is apparent to me that these reviewers, like nearly all of the public, have no appreciation for the unreliability of insurance companies and the games that insurance companies play with healthcare providers that end up causing deep frustration and anger among providers who have to deal directly with all these slippery and unscrupulous insurance companies. But then the insurance bullet ultimately ricochets into the patients who unstanderably become angry and frustrated insurance companies victims as well. But the patients, who have little or no knowledge of the backroom insurance company shenanigans in their dealings with the providers, too often blame the providers rather than the real culprit in the mess, the insurance company. When it comes to calling and getting information from an insurance company about a contested issue, I will 98+% of the time disbelieve most, or all, of the information given if it disagrees with the provider's story of events. That's just where we are in this country with insurance companies now and has been this way for more than 20 years. I can personally attest to this since I have been a healthcare provider for 40+ years and have watched with incredible dismay at the dismantling of healthcare that used to work 30+ years ago satisfactorily (not perfect but so much better than anything we, doctors and patients, have to put up with now). The 2 biggest players by several magnitudes in this destruction are insurance companies, and big business (that operates nearly all hospitals and an ever-increasing majority of individual doctors and dentists providers' practices). So the dissatisfaction of 2 of the other 2 reviewers is understandable but they came to incorrect conclusions since they fail to understand to insurance backstory (through no fault of their own). read more

I am very unsatisfied with how I was treated at this office. I asked prior to making an appointment if my insurance would cover this. I was told yes. I asked prior to my device being made if my insurance would cover this. I was told yes. I was asked to pay upfront due to insurance taking a long time to reimburse. I paid $1250. I was later told by my insurance that they would cover $0. I called their office and they just blamed everything on my insurance. I work in the medical device Industry. I would never quote a patient that their insurance would cover an item and then do nothing if this was not the case. I understand that insurances can be difficult and that sometimes businesses are given the wrong information. However, I don't understand not taking care of a patient better when these mishaps occur. An apology or a small discount would be very professional. However, they did nothing. I would never have had this device made had I known insurance wouldn't cover any portion of the cost. I am a very unsatisfied customer and I strongly advise people to go elsewhere. read more

I have received great care from Dr. Van der Werff and his staff. He made an appliance for me that I wear at night to decrease snoring. The device and subsequent care has been a life changer. The device has allowed me to get a good nights sleep and wake refreshed which was often taken for granted. Dr Van der Werff is the only dentist north of the Bay Area offering this specialty, so I'm grateful for his treatment. Office visits are always timely and the staff is friendly. They have always been clear with me regarding what my insurance will cover. read more

My friend was working with this office for several months to try and get a medically necessary dental appliance for sleep apnea/tmj. When he first approached this office about the brace their billing supervisor informed him that they didn't accept his managed care medi-cal, but if he was able to get his insurance company to approve it then they would accept it via a prior authorization since it was out of network. After many grueling months going back and forth with this office and his insurance company, his insurance company finally approved the brace in mid December of 2018. His insurance company then called the billing supervisor to Dr. Van der Werff, to go over pricing for the brace. At the same time the brace had been approved, on this same day in mid December, my friend faxed the paperwork right over to the office. The billing supervisor acknowledged receiving it. The supervisor told his insurance company that she would be there for several more hours and asked them to call back. My friend also called the doctor's office several times that day and the weeks ahead several times after he faxed the paperwork of the approval, only to be told by the billing supervisor at the beginning of January, when they apparently returned to the office, that they are no longer contracted with medi-cal as of January 1st. She had his approval in mid December 2018. The billing supervisor at the dental office also stated that she didn't know how they would do the billing on his appliance. Originally she said that he would have come in to the office and they would have billed it to his insurance company and they would have paid for it. He then asked her if she would be so kind to call a supervisor at his insurance company to try and fix this situation and she said she would and get back to him. That was the last he heard from her. This company claims to be the only company to make this type of brace but that is not the case. He has found several others and has found better options. They only care about money, not people. I have been a patient of Dr Van der Werff for a few years now. I suffered for so many years with migraine headaches, but I didn't go to Dr. Van der Werff until my teeth started dying off! I was clenching my jaw at night and never knew it, but Dr. Van der Werff fit me with my appliance and my life changed literally overnight! The office staff have always been very upfront with me about my insurance coverage, but I would pay out of pocket for this if necessary, it's so worth it! Completely disappointed with the outcome of my dental appliance. My TMJ was exasperated greatly and I was left with no options other than to go elsewhere. Strongly advise you look elsewhere and save yourself money and pain. read more
