When we were choosing a contractor, Mr. Contractor's Yelp rating gave me some hesitation - especially given the high ratings elsewhere. But when I read the reviews themselves rather than just looking at the overall rating, many of the complaints seemed to involve relatively small jobs. We needed someone for a large, complicated renovation of a very old house, and the experience and capabilities Ken demonstrated seemed much better suited to that kind of project. Having now completed the job, I'm very glad we made that distinction. This was a big project, and our old house threw plenty of surprises at us. Once the demo began, our engineer found that part of the kitchen needed to be structurally rebuilt from the foundation up. That meant coordinating with our architect and structural engineer and substantially expanded the work. Despite that and the many twists and turns that followed, Ken and his crew kept things moving and completed an extraordinary amount of work in just 10 weeks. What really stood out was the crew. These guys were craftsmen who took genuine pride in what they were building. More than once, they spent extra time on something simply to get the finished result just right or recommended enhancements that were not charged. A friend who is a high-end interior designer saw the kitchen afterward and was impressed by the quality of the construction and attention to detail. We also lived in the house throughout the renovation. The crew was friendly and respectful, and they cleaned up the work areas at the end of every day -- something we came to appreciate enormously during 10 weeks of construction. Was every little detail perfect the first time? No. But that's actually part of why I'm comfortable giving Ken five stars. When something wasn't right, he worked to make it right. He and his team stayed engaged through the end of the project, addressed our punch-list items, and have continued to stand behind their work afterward. And we LOVE the result. The kitchen has completely changed the way we live in the house. It has become the place where our family naturally gathers, and it's as comfortable and functional to cook in as it is beautiful. The new bathroom has been equally transformative. At the beginning, I worried that we might be spending too much on the project - and it was significant. But by the end, having seen the amount of work involved and the quality and care that went into it, I felt exactly the opposite: we received very good value for our money. My takeaway is that Ken's particular strength is a substantial, complex project where you need an experienced GC who can keep multiple trades moving, deal with unexpected conditions, solve problems as they arise, and see the whole thing through. Renovating a 130-year-old house isn't easy, and I'd much rather have a contractor who knows how to deal with the inevitable problems and stands behind the finished product. We'd happily hire Ken and Mr. Contractor again.

This review is long overdue for work we had done in October. We needed a contractor to turn a large…read morebedroom into 2 smaller bedrooms for our kids. We needed framing, sheetrock, electrical, trim and closets built. Joe was way more responsive than all other contractors and was very reasonable with costs. The price was exactly what he quoted us. (Another contractor was supposed to start before we found Joe and completely ghosted us around the start date.) Lou was the main guy who was here several days and he was great. We felt totally comfortable with him in our home. Our 4 year old son kept asking where Lou was after the project was completed. Lou worked around us when it came to hours that worked best for our family. Our kids love their bedrooms. And our 4 year old son finally sleeps in his own bed. We will be calling Joe when we are ready to remodel our kitchen and bathrooms.

DISASTER. Turn and run. We hired Joe for a large 203K project. We had problems from the very…read morebeginning: he was slow to start, kept changing his mind about the game plan, complained about the fact that he could get no money up front--terms of the 203K that he had of course agreed to--and pressured us to give him significant up-front money to "help him start". He instructed me in June of 2024 to rush to buy materials for a small bathroom that was still mostly unfinished in April of 2025; that kind of thing happened multiple times. His workers were inadequately supervised, and he was difficult to reach, often saying things like I'm at a kid's soccer game, out to dinner with my daughter, etc. The way that 203K's work is that HUD inspectors come out at regular intervals to make sure that adequate work has been done to make a draw from the total budget. Joe did a bunch of stuff merely to look busy to justify the first draw, in August: a slap-dash exterior paint job over crumbling paint that made a mess and did not hold, for instance. Between the first and the second draw, there was slow but meaningful progress--but by then we were 5 months into a job that we were told would take 4-6 months, and nowhere near done. During much of that 3-month interval he had just one guy working on our huge project, an electrician. After the second draw, in late November, he basically just stopped working on the house. We were making double housing payments the whole time, of course, so we panicked. We were almost out of money. After numerous calls and messages failed to get him to pick up the pace, at the urging of our lender, we scheduled a third draw, 3 months after the second one. At that draw, the HUD inspector certified that no work had been done, so no funds would be paid out. That's when we finally worked up the nerve to fire him. It was terrifying, because our lender told us that we would have trouble getting anyone to take on such a large project with only what was left in the budget after Joe depleted it. By the grace of God, we did find one. He swept in and got the job done in about 4 months. We finally moved in almost exactly one year after closing. Of course we had two mortgage payments the whole time. The work could have been finished within 6 months, or close to it, if we had found a great contractor like the one we found after we fired Mr. Depiano. Working with Mr. Depiano was harrowing. We were newbs at this, and therefore easy to fool. DON'T MAKE OUR MISTAKE.

Although he was priced slightly higher than the other contractors we obtained pricing from, the quality of his work was worth the nominal difference in pricing. I am an architect and my husband a user experience designer. We were very selective about who we choose to renovate my first own home. Zephyr worked with my husband and I throughout the entire process. He coordinated all new plumbing and electrical re-wiring (with a licensed plumber and electrician), made suggestions when we were trying to mitigate a fast-paced decision making process, and executed the work on-time and on-budget. Being involved in the trade, I cannot stress enough how difficult it is to find a contractor who is reasonably priced and does the job right. I will be working with Zephyr again on my next project. This particular renovation included the following to give you an idea of the scope of the project: * Refinishing original wood floors * 2 new full bathrooms * Complete replacement of all interior walls and ceilings * New electrical through-out * New plumbing through-out * New roofing * Brick re-pointing * 20 new windows installed * Insulated all exterior walls and roof * New Kitchen

We bought a fixer upper in 2008, and immediately hired a contractor to update our bedroom and bathroom. They burned us, and left us with leaks throughout the house. We ended up finishing the project ourselves, but not aware of some of the leaks and damage left behind. After this experience, we were hesitant to try again, hearing so many other peoples horror stories of their own with contractors. Finally the leaks became too much, and we needed to address them as well as move on with construction of our home. We were referred to Zephyr, and after his recent completion of our kitchen, we have already asked him to put us at the end of his list for our next project. What it will be, we haven't decided yet. But we have a whole house for him to repair, so we have something that needs to be done no matter what the order of repair is. Zephyr is very straightforward, and he is a perfectionist. He will give you advice along the way, and you should listen to him. He ripped out our kitchen, found multiple issues with leaks coming from our bedroom above (where the previous contractors installed french doors improperly), so he addressed that by taking out the doors and installing a new wall with windows. He replaced all our support beams in the kitchen, as well as added support so that we could build out on the 2nd floor. We told him our goals for the house in the long run and he prepared the house for those projects while working on it now. For example, we want to add a bathroom to our bedroom, so while he had the walls ripped open, he planned where the pipes would go and built enough room in that wall so that his next job would be prepped. Zephyr said he would have our kitchen done in 2 months and he delivered. Mitchell Custom Concepts may give you a higher quote than other contractors around, but they are worth every penny. Your project will be done properly, and by people who know what they are doing. Zephyr's whole team is great to work with. Whether Mike or Ian are at your house finishing something up, you can rest assured you are in good hands. Zephyr's vendors he uses for windows, floors, materials are all vetted and you know you will get quality materials/work from anyone he uses. We especially love our floors. Zephyr had his floor guy come in to sand and lacquer our floors, and I am beyond happy with the result. Before Zephyr and his team worked on my home, our basement would flood with 1-3 inches of water during rainstorms. Now, we don't get any standing water at all. Zephyr understands that your house is an investment, and he will address your biggest problems first, then work his way out. With us, he addressed all our leaks before we did any cosmetic work. I live on a pretty nosey South Philly street where all my neighbors watch whats going on with the rest of the neighbors all day long. Well, all I heard from my neighbors was "Your contractor was bringing in big pieces of lumber today. You must be getting a lot done!" "your contractor was here all day working!" and "Those guys working on your house are working hard. You must have hired good people". Yeah, we did hire good people.

MTP Construction renovated my house throughout 2025 while I was living in Florida, and Martin and…read moreJane Potter were outstanding. Martin picks up on the first ring and stays in touch by call, text, and email. He sent photos and videos the whole time I was away and managed every subcontractor. Jane handled billing over the phone from Florida and made it easy. The crew cleaned up every day like they had never been there. The work was real construction, not cosmetic. They removed a kitchen/living room wall, added a structural beam with 4,000 PSI concrete, pulled permits, used an engineer, and passed inspections. The kitchen was taken down to the studs -- new insulation, sheetrock, cabinets, granite, under cabinet lighting, under cabinet receptacles, appliances, plumbing, fridge water and ice line, and the gas line was moved when they extended the kitchen about four feet. We gained roughly 60 square feet and about 15 cubic feet of cabinet space. They matched the existing oak floors after the wall came out and added a 4x4 opening kitchen skylight with a rain sensor. They also converted a powder room into a full bath with a custom handmade 4x3 shower using three different tiles, plus a new toilet, vanity, sink, plumbing, heater/exhaust fan, recessed shower lighting, nickel spaced wooden wall, pocket door and vanity lamps. Electrical was upgraded from a 60-amp panel to 200 amps for the whole house. They tripled the receptacles on the main floor and added motion-sensor closet lights, five ceiling fans, basement lighting, stair lighting to the yard, and exterior motion lights on both sides and every corner of the house. Outside they installed five new exterior doors, new windows on the main floor and basement, two storm windows with screens, a doorbell, hose bibs, a doggy door, a vinyl fence, and leaf guards after inspecting the gutters. They cleaned the attic, installed heavy-duty pull-down stairs rated to 400 pounds, put in interior and exterior French drains, added a new laundry tub, and cleaned up a yard that had sat for a year -- including removal of two 70-80 foot pines, two large dogwood shrubs, and the stumps. Carpenters Carl and Ryan were excellent -- skilled, honest, and trustworthy. High-quality work from start to finish. I would hire MTP Construction again.

Stretch Construction completely redid our kitchen--helping us turn a 1960s nightmare into a…read moregorgeous homeowner's dream. It was not a small job! We had the original, outdated cabinets, appliances, flooring, and windows to deal with. Justin did an incredible job with the demo first (getting everything out with no damage to the house; cleaning up along the way; getting the dumpster delivered and then removed.) Every time I came home, I was delighted to see that the space was swept and safe for my daughter and our dog to walk through. After the demo, Justin quickly moved into flooring, plumbing, and cabinet installation. Every single construction job requires pivots. The key is how your contractor handles unforeseen changes WHEN they come up (because they do.) When our cabinets were delivered with 6" of additional width (our outside cabinet partner's fault!) Justin quickly helped pivot and reflow the layout to fit the space. What would have set us back three weeks was reconfigured and fixed within three hours. The final product is absolutely GORGEOUS. Everyone who visits asks who did the work. It is a joy to recommend someone as detail-oriented, kind, and talented as Justin. We will be working with him on any future projects and cannot recommend him enough.

He redid our kitchen - floor tiles, new cabinetry, backsplash. For the floor he took out the (huge) fridge, oven, dishwasher and the cabinets to tile properly to the wall underneath them. We got our countertops from Ikea and he was flexible fitting in around their schedule. And for the backsplash he did a really great job: Everything aligned correctly even though we picked mini subway tiles which were really awkward to cut (see photos). He also went to the warehouse without complaint when it turned out I hadn't bought enough tiles. Oops. Really nice guy, will definitely ask him again if the need arises.

I have already laid out what our experience…read morewas with him, the subsequent issues of that work, and what other contractors have told us since we have had others in to actually resolve the core/root problem we were having and feel it's no longer productive to belabor this aspect. However, the true issue here is the picture John has decided to paint of us, which is the reason why I have chosen to write this update just for further context for others considering working with him. To clarify what John describes as "nightmare" behavior. As he says we did not reside at the residence yet so obviously someone had to let him in to do the work. I'm not sure why he believes we were not on time- that's how we knew he was always late sometimes to the point of having to reschedule because we would be waiting for him at the house first. I do not know what difficulty he is describing contacting us and getting into the house when we have frequent text messages and outreach confirming our meeting times with him. Additionally the "late" payment he is referring to occurred over the 4th of July holiday weekend in which he gave us no exact time estimate when he'd be done; we were out with friends and not checking our phones but he messaged us at 5:45PM and we paid at 8:26PM, the very same day with apologies of the inconvience caused by the few hours delay when we had a spare moment to send payment while out. I'm happy he's brought up our text conversations as that is at least one thing I am very much in agreement with. We were nothing short of respectful and cordial in our exchanges with him and thanked him for coming out to do the work repeatedly and I would also gladly show anyone the conversation history and very much stand by the courtesy and understanding we treated him with when he asked for schedule flexibility in arrival times and more. Minus the 4th of July message delay because of us being out of town, we were prompt with responses as well which our texts would show. We also initially reached out privately via email first to try to resolve this directly with John before writing this review. It's one thing for business owner and client to disagree on an experience however I strongly feel the way John painted us as clients is highly inaccurate and upsetting.
