The service here is just outstanding. They'll ask you when you come in the store if they can help you find something, then chances are they'll send someone to find exactly what you need. They have a far better selection of small hardware (nuts, bolts, springs, even shims) than any of the big box stores. They remind me of the service we would get at the Gilroy Orchard Supply Hardware back in the 1970's. I buy all of my tools and home improvement stuff here. read more

My husband bought some stuff from here, and because of some permit issues we couldn't use it. It was sitting in garage unused undamaged. Steve is the person whom my husband worked with. Earlier we were informed that undamaged items can be taken back with some restocking fee. However when I contacted Steve, he said he will look into the details and get back, however he never got back to me. I tried calling again, left a VM. Never got the call back. I was okay even if they said they couldn't take back because of so and so reason, but avoiding the calls is not good customer service. read more

We visit Johnson Lumber Ace Hardware whenever we need anything hardware, paint, special cleaning, etc. The service is consistently friendly and helpful and nobody every acts like my questions are stupid, which I am sure some of them are. I had to return something the other day and I did not have the receipt but they had no trouble letting me exchange it for something a different size. This is a very helpful place to go. Excellent old fashioned service and a great selection! Have you seen the new, expanded part of Ace Hardware? Incredible selection! (Note: for hanging big heavy mirrors, they are the only ones who carry the Hangman system in stock). Recent visit: we had mice coming into our house and realized that the covered air vents around our house weren't so covered (animals had chewed through a couple). We bring in the air vent cover, show it to Doug and he brings us right to the replacement. Then we ask for nails, since that is what they were originally put in with. Doug suggests that long wood screws would work better and finds them for us. Worked like a charm!! Thank you Doug! Also, the owners are big contributors to the Morgan Hill community. I've been a loyal customer trying to support the local business. Today I needed a 5 ft. piece of oak threshold moulding cut. They refused to do it and said they only cut when 8 ft are left, so that I would have to buy the entire 12' piece. At over $5/ foot, that wasn't an option. Needless to say I had to go to Southern Lumber in San Jose who instantly accomodated my request. Johnson just lost a long time customer, Southern Lumber is much more flexible. read more

Why is it that I can go to this place and almost always find what I need, yet when I go to their competition (an enormous store that rhymes with "Gnome Depot") I don't leave with what I need about half the time? Ace is a fraction of the size of that "Gnome Depot" store with friendlier people. I don't walk around a warehouse and not find what I'm looking for. I don't have to send up a signal flare so an employee may possibly find the aisle I'm in to tell me they DON'T have what I need. Why do I go to that other store? The employees will help you with just about anything, and there's plenty of them so you don't have to walk around begging for assistance. We won't step foot into our Home Depot (Morgan Hill) because there is never a soul around when you need them. In the twelve years I've been going to Ace, I've never had a bad experience. The staff is trained to actually give you advice--whether you're buying a plumbing part or repairing a window screen. I am extremely happy with my last visit to Johnson Lumber, Morgan Hill. The supervisor Irene was a delight. I called Ace because a pop-up canopy I had purchased earlier on broke. I no longer had the receipt nor box it came in. When I told Irene I am an Ace Rewards customer she offered to look up my receipt for me. When I arrived at Ace a couple hours later the cashier was able to obtain my receipt and give me a refund. If you think customer service has become a lost art in the US, you need to visit Ace Hardware on Tennant Ave in Morgan Hill to remind you that excellent customer service still exists out there. On weekends, the friendly service starts even before you get in the store with a "Hello" from the folks that are operating the hot dog stand out front. And I challenge anyone to make it from the front door to the plumbing and electrical supplies in the back without someone asking you if you need help with anything. Not to mention the knowledge these folks have.... whether its weatherproofing a house, fixing a squeaky door, or getting rid of a pest problem, the folks at this Ace makes home improvement fun again. I haven't stepped foot in Home Depot or Lowes in years. And if you are a Weber fan, Ace has its own store-within-a-store on Weber products. You can even order online and it will ship at no charge to the store for you to pick up. I ordered my Weber Q220 from them and it arrived within days. And when was the last time you bought anything that comes in a big box at a retail store and it didn't have puncture holes, rips, or other damage to the box. Recalling the purchase that made me a MH Ace fan... I bought a small backard storage container from Sears and when I went to pick it up, they had to tape the box together to keep it intact. I refused to accept it and immediately placed the same order from this Ace. The box from Ace was immaculate... the corners weren't even crumpled. Good Job, Ace! read more

I like hardware stores, but I love the Ace Hardware in Morgan Hill because of the way they organize their store and how friendly and helpful the staff are....and they have lots of staff, which is refreshing in this economy. Did I mention the genuinely happy and friendly staff? Not all Ace stores reflect this happy helpful environment. They must have an amazing manager because this attitude has to start from the top. They go out of their way to help you find something even if they have to find it at another store. I procrastinated in buying a jewelry chest during Christmas and one of the staff picked one up for me from another store. Yes, a jewelry chest at a hardware store...they carry neat gifts during the Christmas season. Make sure you sign up for their Ace Rewards card. It's the only company I know who sends me $5 off anything with no minimum purchase. It's the Southwest Airlines and Nordstroms mentality. I like their garden center next door as well and I have no issue with driving from Gilroy to shop. read more

I really love that Johnson has a wide variety of lumber selection. The only downside in my recent experience is the lumber side of customer service. I only get weekends off so unfortunately I only have weekends to purchase my lumber. When I can, I always try to do it during the week as those are the days I get great service, but for some reason weekends is like pulling teeth. I don't live locally so I always call to make sure my lumber is available. I had a gentleman by the name of Patrick assist me. I don't think he knows much about lumber and on the flip side he is pretty unprofessional with customer service. He was on the phone with me and actually told me he has to go because he has customers at the counter. "What am I". I am not one to write about other people, but this guy really stole the show. I hope my opinion is taken in a constructive way and doesn't affect me going to Johnson lumber for my construction needs as I have for many years. read more

I recently moved to Morgan Hill, and this location of Ace Hardware has now been elevated to *my favorite hardware store of all time*. Staff know the stock and genuinely have seemed to care about helping me resolve whatever home- or hardware-related issue brought me into the store, often walking me directly to the product I needed, finding the information I was seeking, and, when possible, suggesting multiple solutions from which I could choose. They even provided friendly and flexible home delivery for an item I had purchased that would not fit into my vehicle. I've been there a handful of times already, have purchased many items, have interacted with numerous staff, and always have left satisfied.
