Hello, my name is Lana, and I needed to reach out to an attorney for my elderly dad who is 84 and has dementia and was in a rehabilitation and care center from 10-31-2023 to 1-10-2024, and on the 9th he somehow was able to escape the facility on foot with his walker from the 3rd floor, and leave the facility using his walker and was able to walk 2 1/2 miles, and was missing for just a little over 6 hours, he crossed 6 major streets with signals, and a railroad track and made it our old area where we grew up at in the 70's & 80's. I was referred to Johnson Moore by another firm regarding my husband's severe malnourishment, dehydration and pressure wounds developed in the skilled nursing facility he was forced to go to while receiving antibiotic infusions. I was given nothing but assurances that they were an excellent law firm. I cannot express how wrong this turned out to be. The case information was given to them within weeks of my husband's death. It was my understanding records were being collected and reviewed. Again I cannot express how wrong my assumption turned out to be. After hearing nothing from the attorney assigned to my case all summer I called on September 29th to ask what was happening and was told they were sending medical records out for review to a nurse - not medical experts, a nurse who is also a lawyer! - and it would take 30 days. In early December I received a call from the hospital the firm was trying to get records from asking me for payment for the records because Johnson Moore had not responded to requests for payment. It was $17.00. Clearly the issue was not money rather it was total inattention and NOT pursuing my case. The only communication I ever had about my case from Johnson Moore was from one of their attorneys, Stephanie Johnson. She called me January 6 to tell me to 'be prepared I don't think you have a case' even though they STILL had not collected and reviewed all the medical records. Stephanie would not answer my questions or discuss the circumstances of what happened to my husband at all. She talked over me and did not listen to my concerns or the information I had to offer. She did not have any inkling as to the shock it was to have my first real communication from this firm be from someone I did not even know because my attorney had quit their firm!! My FIRST real communication was from this insensitive young woman telling me I had no case after waiting patiently for MONTHS believing this firm was working in my best interest pursuing the horrific and neglectful treatment of my husband at the hands of a nursing home. Stephanie called me back January 19 to tell me that the standard of care for neglect might have been breached by the nursing home but she just did not believe in my case. She told me perhaps another attorney would see this differently, but "I just don't believe in your case." REALLY?? What part don't you believe in? The part where my husband suffered from malnutrition so severe his wounds could not heal and he was unable to recover from his illness? The part where he died because of the poor medical care he received? The only true thing she said was I deserve an attorney who believes in my case. BUT..... What is gut-wrenching is to realize Johnson Moore sat on my case and did very little to nothing FOR NINE MONTHS. It took them NINE MONTHS to decide they "didn't believe in my case but maybe someone else might." I have just over 2 months now to find someone else before the legal deadline to file a complaint. Interacting with Stephanie Johnson and this firm has wasted precious time, potentially robbed me of being able to pursue a claim and added to the trauma I experience every day having watched my husband die slowly and painfully from poor medical care and neglect. Stephanie's summation of my husband's life ending malnutrition was: "Well this is what happens at the end of life." I am still stunned. As if a young woman who has been practicing law for not quite 8 years should be telling anyone about what happens at the end of life.
