I'm shocked to read the negative reviews. Our experience has been totally opposite. As mentioned by someone else, Jamie Newell was our designer and job coordinator. The company did a great job on doubling our parking space and redoing our back yard patio. This is the second time we've hired them for an out door home improvement. Like many others, we have experienced very bad customer service. Didn't call back for months. Finally called back after repeated messages, scheduled an appointment and then canceled it with only three hours notice. No call back since then despite leaving messages. Very unprofessional. read more

Do not use this company- I have no idea how they stay in business. I submitted info online regarding our needs and received a follow up call 2 days later to schedule a meeting which took place that same day - encouraging! Waited 10 days but estimate was never provided so I contacted them and received an email with a broad price range for various services but not real estimate. Was told if I was interested he would send through their estimating team for a final estimate. The same day I said I was comfortable with the price ranges and wanted a firm quote. It has been another 11 days and no communication. I called and sent an email to get an update but nobody has responded. This is no way to do business and fortunately there are many of their competitors to Choose from who are responsive and professional. read more

I reached out with to solicit a quote on a driveway project. The owner (I assume) took the call and seemed nice enough in his response but I never heard back from the landscape planner as promised during the initial call. When I called to follow up, the owner did get the landscape planner to call me quickly. The planner asked me some questions and promised me a quote within a week. It's more than two weeks later and I never heard back or got the quote. Seems to be some customer service issues. read more

Matt and his team renovated our DC rowhouse. Not only was the product absolutely stunning, the process was so easy! They turned a dirty concrete jagged slab into a mini wonderland for our kids. We have dealt with many contractors before and this was by far the simplest process, from the planning to the execution, everything was on time (Shocking in the contractor world!) and the product was amazing. Renovating a rowhouse in DC is not uncomplicated, they had to customize the beautiful fence around trees existing on our property lines. The result is our own mini oasis in the city! We are so happy not only with the result but the fact that the process was streamlined and simple for us. read more

The best thing about Johnson's Landscaping is that they will listen carefully to what you want to accomplish; they will deliver detailed project plans for the hard-scaping, landscaping, and plantings; and they're willing to cycle through multiple iterations of the plan till it's exactly what you want. In our case when we said, "More hard-scaping, less landscaping." They took us very seriously. In other words, things go very smoothly right up until the work begins, but here's where you need to make sure that you're fully engaged. Because Johnson's crews pay only cursory attention to the plans, no matter how detailed. They will make changes on their own--changes that you may not agree with--and although the site supervisor is usually willing to explain, that explanation may boil down to, "...I don't know why they did this." Johnson's Landscaping is expensive (the second most expensive of 4 bids we took), and they do beautiful work, but their crews *will* cut corners. The mulch beds, that they refused to put in rocks or bricks to retain, washed straight into our sewer drain with the first storm, clogged it up, and causing storm-water to flood part of our basement. One side of our patio, where they put in no supports or retaining wall is starting to sag after only one year. You'll have to push hard and make sure that every aspect of your project is done to your specifications. If you're a control freak like me, this may work out. If you're the "hand's off type", it will drive you crazy, and you may not be happy with the results. read more

Great company - honest and reliable crew. I selected this company after meeting with more than a dozen contractors to help us solve the drainage problem in our backyard. Charlie provided a competitive bid and based on his honesty and frank observations about our water problem, we selected Johnson's Landscaping. Today, Charlie came out to inspect our external sump pumps his crew installed this spring. This is the kind of personal service Charlie provides. By the way, we've not had a drop of water enter our basement since Charlie installed the sump pumps. read more

Don't waste your time unless you need big jobs done. I reached out to this company to provide us an estimate for some stonework and without seeing the property and talking to me for less than 90 seconds I was told that they don't work for jobs less than $5,000 and that my job "sounded" like a couple thousand. Now we could spend $5,000 but not with a company that's not even willing to come take a look without me promising to spend $5,000. What's worse is he didn't offer an alternative or any advice on who might do these types of jobs. Terrible business model and poor customer service. I'm giving them a patronizing two stars because they have a very nice website with great photos. But that's all they have to offer for less than $5k. read more

We bought a new house and the garden was in need of some serious attention (removing dead trees, invasive ivy everywhere) including re-building. We worked with Jamie Newell on the design - which was a real pleasure. Jamie picked up very quickly on what we like (a bit more Japanese style) and made some excellent suggestions. The team (very nice and courteous) started working exactly on the day promised and finished on time. The bill was exactly what the quote/estimate predicted. The garden turned out lovely - lots of neighbours commenting on it. Moreover, I can see already that the design will even keep improving over the years as Jamie planted many flowers and bushes in a height-wise staggered way that will 'interact' well with each other over the years. So far, every single tree or plant (including the grass sods) is thriving (1 year warranty on all plants!). Reached out to Johnson Landscaping for an estimate. Joe was responsive in setting an appointment and showing up on time. He went over different options with me and stated he would provide a quote. This is where everything fell apart. I didn't and have not received a quote. It has been over 5 weeks. What I thought and was hoping to be a good experience never got off the ground. The irony is I tried following up a couple of times with Joe at Johnson's landscaping and my calls where sent to voicemail. DONT waste your time with Johnson's Landscaping and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't expect Joe do follow up or do anything he says he will. read more

I have been working with Johnson's Landscaping Services for many years and I could not be happier. Jamie Newell is my designer and he is fantastic. Jamie is creative, flexible and provides great customer service. I was fairly clueless about how to design a garden and he helped me every step of the way. My expectations were exceeded and my garden and front yard received endless compliments. When I sold my house, leaving my beautiful yard was the thing that was the hardest. I can't wait to get started on my new project with Johnson's at my new home! I should also note that Matt Johnson and his team are great as well. In addition to desiging and planting my garden, I had Johnson's maintain my yard and plantings. They did a great job and responded quickly to any concerns. work is good; customer service, not so much. I just signed the last check on a project for which I made a down payment at the beginning of April. It's been painful-designer wasn't listening, billing closed us out before the project was done and hounded us, and then the last part didn't get going without many, many calls and lowered expectations. But ohmigosh I absolutely love my retaining wall, and their masonry folks are awesome. But really: There are other companies who get the back end right. read more

We could not be more pleased with the projects we've had Johnson's complete for us! We had a major drainage problem in our yard of our newly constructed home and Charlie and his team proposed a solution that looks great and is functional. We were so impressed, we asked them to complete another grading project on a different part of our yard. Charlie noticed a few other things that the original landscaping company did incorrectly and fixed those as well. We were exceeding pleased with the work that Johnson's performed for us - a new driveway, walkway, garden wall and filling in an unused in ground pool. We also worked with Joe Stark he and the entire work staff were extremely professional, attentive to our ideas and a source of excellent advice. Very expensive. They wouldn't agree to do a project for which they gave me an estimate, because the project would only take 3 hours and their workers only do projects lasting the full work day. They wanted me to go with some of the other projects they estimated and cost a lot more. Never heard of a company turning down money. read more

I worked with Jamie Newell as the designer. He made constructive suggestions to my requirements. I could not have been happier with the deign process and the work, just the opposite of your prior reviewer. The work was postponed because of the rain and I had to be away when the actual work was done, but it surpassed my expectations. It was done exactly as planned, plus new grass seeded in worn and damaged areas, everything trimmed up beautifully. They even finished up a small project that a prior landscaper had left undone. They were the most expensive bid, but I wouldn't look elsewhere for this region. read more
