I started diving - in Maine - in 1993. At this point it's part of my work. I am the Director of Education for DiverMojo Foundation - a non-profit focused on ocean conservation and education. I no longer dive cold water but recently moved back to Maine. Johnson's is local and my go-to for annual reg/BCD service and care. Customer service is always friendly and professional. Work is done quickly. There is a good selection of scuba products/merchandise, and the prices are fair. Others have mentioned the fact that Johnson's doesn't try to upcharge. I've only experienced the SCUBA diving portion of this business, which I rate three stars. Compared to other dive shops, from my experience in California, this shop is mediocre. There isn't much rental equipment; if several people are renting gear, you're selection is quite minimal. The prices are also quite high, compared to the diving I do in San Diego, CA. Lastly, their classes and dive masters are hard to pin down and often hard to contact. This dive shop works, as there aren't many in Maine, but it is far from ideal. read more

I visited the store in Portland on 29 August; employee was not wearing a mask. I had already called the store MULTIPLE times before I arrived to ensure that I had all the paperwork, etc. necessary. Unfortunately, the employee didn't know the process and couldn't explain how to deal with a particular issue, so she told me to contact *another* employee, who would be working the NEXT DAY, at the Brunswick store. I left empty handed with a business card. Despite my attempt to politely start a conversation, this woman quickly turned EXTREMELY RUDE AND COMBATIVE as I attempted to understand what needed to be done. The woman frequently cut me off, assuming she knew the direction I was headed with my questions (she didn't). At the end of the call, despite all the anger and frustration, I had established that there was a SIMPLE solution to the issue at-hand (vs. what had been proposed), but -- at that point -- I was so disappointed with how I'd been treated that I decided to simply terminate my business with Johnson's. Please, in the future, try to remain professional when someone is trying to clarify process -- there's no benefit in getting personally spun up or treating honest questions as an affront to your knowledge. read more

I received my open water cert from Carrie(super cool lady) and Cody (super cool lady's super cool son). They made me feel comfortable and are wicked good people. I feel like when I walk into the store I am recognized and that is worth money to me to feel "at home" in the shop. My questions always get answers and my confidence as a diver is based on great instruction. I will always do business with Johnson's. They are my go to dive shop! I don't do much ocean fishing (until I get a spear!) but these guys have their ear to the water and know what is hitting where and have bait for everything! I went to Johnson's on a Friday looking for .38 Special ammunition. They sold me Hornady Critical Defense, which I've used in other calibers. The salesperson told me that this was the only choice they had in stock for .38 Special. What he failed to tell me was that this ammo is +P, which is loaded to higher pressure than SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute) specifications. Shooting this ammo in a firearm that's not specifically rated for +P ammo can damage the firearm and endanger the shooter. When I got home, I noticed that the ammo was +P and can't be safely fired in my revolver. On Monday I brought the unopened ammo back to Johnson's, along with the sales receipt. They absolutely refused to issue a refund, give a store credit, or exchange it for other merchandise. I was told that this is "store policy." I could understand if I had simply changed my mind, but I was sold ammo that could damage my firearm and endanger me! My feeling is that the clerk should have warned me that this ammo isn't safe for standard .38 Special weapons before selling it to me. I'll never, ever shop in this store again! read more

Love this place for several reasons. Number uno. Amazing service by any one of several staff . My biggest use and part of the reason I started was the propane fill station. I use a lot of propane in the summer I have a couple of campers, always grilling or smoking something that needs propane.. And this is where I get them filled up. And now they can do the testing on your tank to recertify it if it's old or out of date. A lot of us have out-of-date tanks that look like they're brand new. That alone is an amazing service. I've also bought fishing gear there lures they sell bait. And a few years ago I bought a pellet gun. I was having trouble recently with sighting it and I took it over there and asked him if they would sight it cuz they do something they call bore sighting. And the fellow said that my scope was messed up. He said it had been dropped by looking at it I don't remember doing it but anything could have happened well anyway it was damaged wasn't working right you could barely look through it which is why I was having trouble any gave me a new one or at least a used one something and because I had bought this pellet gun from them even though it wasn't recently there was no charge. To me that is amazing service The way it ought to be. I might buy ammo there for some other guns but ammo is really hard to come by these days and they don't have much but for the propane service and the lures and fishing gear and just the knowledge that they have and can impart to you to help you for whatever you want to do that's great service too . I think they do a lot of dive stuff there they teach diving and sell the gear. if you never been check them out. read more

Carrie came to my camp. She came with her son Cody. We dove in Lake Ossipee. Carrie certified three of my friends and I. Every time we dove Carrie brought two kids at a time to a shipwreck. We think it was one of the camps old Boston whalers. read more
