The rental process is very easy, the guys at the shop were great. We rented 1 ebike for the wife and a hybrid for me. I rode back to the hotel and straight to the ferry ride to Peaks Island. Upon starting our ride, the pedal came off and I tried putting it back by hand. Unfortunately no luck. The owner of hardware store helped me put it back but the thread was completely chewed. I ended up paying the guy and rented another bike in the island. The guys met me at the Portland pier to swap the bikes and was told I will be compensated. It was nice we were able to complete out bike trip from Portland to Peaks Island to South Portland to Cape Elizabeth and back. Upon return, there were no mention of the said compensation even though I paid $10 for island rental and $20 for the gentleman that helped me. read more

Not a lot of bicycle options in Portland but was thrilled to find this spot which had e-bikes, the perfect way to visit the light houses. The customer service in the beginning wasn't stellar, but they were so open to feedback and were so kind when we shared it, and really blew us away. I usually stick to reviewing restaurants as I used to work in the industry for a very long time and feel I know enough to commentate accurately (understanding of slow service, judge a restaurant on how they fix a mistake instead of judging them for a mistake etc). But I had such a fantastic buying experience at Gorman Bike and Ski, I felt it was necessary! I'll start by saying I know nothing about the massive industry biking has become. But I do know that my old bike was 18 years old and never really fit my 6'3" body. I walked in and saw bikes that were nearly $5k and almost walked out because REALLY?! Enter the very nice gentleman who I believe is named Colin. The store was very busy but he took the time to listen to what I knew I wanted and asked specific questions to help me find what I need. I said I needed a bike I could ride around the city, travel to peaks with, ride to work on, and fit the fact that I'm obnoxiously tall. I also stated my budget was in the hundreds, not thousands. He did not think for more than a minute before directing me to the bike I would eventually buy. He didn't try to upsell me to something outside my budget. He didn't try to force a sale on me. He wanted to help me find something that he knew was a long term investment for me. I love my new bike! I can ride comfortably for the first time in almost two decades. And I do much appreciate the care and ease Colin's approach to me was handled. He made me feel respected as a buyer and definitely has secured my business for tune ups on my new bike! read more

These folks were great! I drove an hour to ride the Eastern trail only to find I had a flat tire. They had me up and running in 15 minutes for less than 20 dollars and they were so helpful and friendly. Also I got my wife a super cute otter bike bell and they had Maple Stroopwaffel. My wife and I rented hybrid bikes (Trek Versa 1) and they were in good condition and repair. The bikes were appropriate for the carriage roads in Acadia as well as riding on the roads in the Saco area. Of course they are fairly heavy hybrids so don't expect any speed records but they were comfortable. The young men working at the Saco shop were helpful. I would rent from them again. read more

I was really surprised by the service I got here. I am a huge fan of Yelp, and normally, the reviews and ratings are spot on, but in this case, I'm unsure of why their rating isn't higher. Whatever happened to the people who rated it so low certainly wasn't what I got from the place. First, I found their prices very reasonable. Their selection is huge, and there were a lot of workers in the place. It did take a while to get served, but that was only because it was so busy. In the mean time, I played with their dog and passed the time looking at all the bikes. I bought a bike there and then decided to get my old bike tuned up as a backup. I have a Canondale, and even though they are not a Canondale shop, they took great care of me. They got me new handle bars, did an annual tune-up for $99 that has my bike running like it's brand new. They had to order the parts for me and stayed in touch with me the whole time. I told them that there was no rush, but they were committed to getting my bike back to me by the long weekend. My experience with the store has to do with repairs. I was selling one of my bikes and needed to get an item fixed which required a specialized tool. Instead of buying the $25 tool and doing it myself, I sent it here to be fixed. They had to order the tool and complete the 5 minute fix. The bill: $30. I felt beyond violated knowing I had just bought a new tool for them and still paid for the 5 minutes of labor. A later experience involved price checking labor costs for reaming a head tube and bottom bracket on a new bike frame. They gave me a price matching the highest quoted, that is until I called the Gorham Bike in Saco, which went even higher. At this point I completely wrote off this shop for repairs. My wife and I stopped in to purchase a helmet and bike basket for her. Roughy 3 employees passed us without saying hello or offering any help. We didn't know what we were looking for as far as details so a little assistance would have been appreciated. I got the feeling that we were not part of the cool kid crowd. So, I told my wife we would find a helmet someplace else. She still bought one item. We stood in line at least 10 minutes while an employee talked with a customer. No one told us we could check out at a different register even though every employee saw us. We weren't greeted until we were checking out. I know a lot about road bikes, but nothing about mountain bikes. My friend was bugging me to go mountain biking with him during the colder months, so I went it to get one after about 45 minutes of on-line research to get to know the basics. Dave did a great job explaining everything, and helping me pick out a bike in my price range - fortunately one also in stock. He was particularly knowledgable about shoes and fitting, an area that many shops just do not pay much attention to. I was impressed that his advice built on some very hard earned knowledge I have acquired over the last year in response to foot pain while cycling. After the purchase of the bike, Dave took the time to to explain a lot of important details about the mountain bike, and mountain biking in general, to get me started. If you're looking to buy a new bike and haven't been riding for a while, this is NOT the place to go. I knew the type of bike I wanted but needed help in figuring out fit/specs etc. After testing a man's model and asking if I was properly fit for it, the response was 'if you feel it fits, that's what we go on'. I know now that other places examine a buyer's angle to the handlebars and pedals to make the right adjustments. I gullibly believed him and brought the bike. After a couple rides I was getting side and wrist strain. I went back with the bike and a different guy looked at me on the bike and brought the seat forward. That did not help so I went to a smaller bike shop that does much more servicing (vs. renting or selling). One of the guys immediately saw that my seat was way too low and the handle grip angle wrong. They also adjusted the back rack that Gorham installed so that I could also use an under seat pouch and have a place to put a flashing rear red light. I don't know if a woman's model of the same bike would've been a better fit but do know that when one is spending well over $1000, there should be knowledgeable, attentive service. And if the buyer identifies herself as a lapsed-biker, extra attention should ensure that the right bike is bought. So if you want assistance, go elsewhere to buy. read more

Ordered a bike online, paid in full and was told it would be ready a week later. Exchanged multiple emails with the GM Dave Palese about part upgrades & finalizing my order. After not hearing from them I checked in a week later & was told they did not have the bike I ordered as they had not updated their inventory. I got a refund and the mistake was barely even acknowledged by the same GM I had been trading emails with. This place is a joke. Gorham Bike was at Lobsterman Triathlon 9-10-11 and Tim was beyond wonderful! I had a tubular flat on me before the swim and I panicked. But Tim and his crew were able to work with me successfully and he even checked my bike in the rack twice, to see if it held, before my swim time was up. I felt he was calm, knowledgeable, willing, and caring. This review is based upon the experience of renting a bike. Gorham had a wonderful selection of bikes available, and their bike rental reservation process was easy and quick to do over the phone. The staff was attentive, helpful, encouraging, and knowledgeable about local riding routes and safe roads to ride on. The prices for road bike rentals here are some of the best in the entire country, and it was easy and affordable to buy the few little items I needed (water bottle and snacks). Portland, Maine, is a beautiful place to go cycling, and if you're visiting from out of town it's well worth the money to rent a bike from Gorham and explore the local area on two wheels. read more

If you're a female in search of a triathlon wetsuit, don't bother with this place. All the "duuudes" were busy with one other customer's bicycle. They could not have been bothered with me. To the owner, based on the reviews as well, sounds like you need to train your guys in better customer service. One word: DARCY! She's amazing--treats the entry-level customer like a big shot, amazing service, patient explanations, and SPOT ON ADVICE. I've bought a bike and a pair of xc skis/boots/poles based on her reco's and they've been perfect (and perfectly budget-friendly) for my needs. Couldn't be more helpful and responsive. Bike shop dudes are usually trying to explain to me why I *need* top of the line equipment, or can't be bothered to give me the time of day to explain the difference between entry-level equipment. It's a revelation to communicate with a knowledgeable woman who doesn't give me any attitude when I say "I'm just getting started and want to spend as little as possible to see if I like it." GBS can be a bit pricier than other options, but the SERVICE more than makes up for the difference. I'm a cheap bastard, and this is the only place I go for gear. read more
