I am writing this after my first trip to Joi Salon. I scheduled a haircut the day of, and was not expecting too much. I was pleasantly surprised! Briana Norwood cut my hair. She took her time, and was extremely informative. She actually taught me how to 'achieve' what I wanted my hair to look like. She broke down the steps for me, other hair stylists have done this before...but never in such a easy to follow manner. Briana also suggested products that are actually awesome and do what they claim to do. The two ladies at the front desk were very polite and welcoming. The salon is quite clean, and bright. Jenn is wonderful! I came in hoping to get my bob shaped up, and she did an amazing job. I was really nervous about losing length-I'm growing my hair out for my wedding-and Jenn took great care of me. She explained everything she was going to do, and checked with me to make sure I was comfortable during the whole process. I have been seeing Jensy for few years now. Prior to him I had a difficult time getting someone that gave me the perfect blonde highlights. Jensy highlights my hair perfectly every time. I recently went to Joi before my wedding and briana styled my hair for my rehearsal dinner. My hair lasted all night long. I am an african-american woman with natural (un-relaxed) hair and I have had horrible experiences with Boston Salons so far. I just happened upon Joi Salon because it's down the street from where I work in the North End and I asked if anyone did "ethnic" hair as it's called here. Luckily, Edna was there and we had a consultation. This was about 6 months ago, I finally caved in and made an appointment and am very, very happy with my results. I had my hair washed, conditioned, blow dried, flat ironed and cut by Edna Rosales for $80. She was wonderful and very knowledgeable about my hair type. The result of the cut was a beautiful, healthy, shiny, layered bob with lots of body and flow that will go back to it's natural state easily. I will definitely return to get my hair cut and deep conditioned! What a great find!!! read more

I have had a haircut and multiple waxes here. I wish I could give 2 separate reviews because the waxing should be 5 stars and the haircut should be 2 at most. I have gotten waxed by Liz a few times and she is wonderful, made me feel totally comfortable and did a great job. I have tried quite a few places in Boston and she is by far the best I've been to. The hair cut is another matter. I had Laurie cut my hair before Christmas in a simple A-line cut. My hair was already in that shape, so she really just needed to take it up a few inches. After leaving, I noticed that one side was longer than the other and that on one side she cut the bottom longer than the top of my hair, making it look really choppy and uneven. I also had tons of pieces that were not the same length as the rest of my hair. I was away for about a week and made an appointment for when I came back to have it fixed. They gave me Laurie again and she was really defensive about the hair cut and made me feel like it was in my head that it looked so bad. She also blamed the thickness of my hair on the choppiness I mentioned and before I could say anything started cutting my hair with thinning scissors. I have never had another hairdresser blame the thickness of my hair on bluntness or choppiness on the bottom. I even told her to just cut the bottom shorter than the top like most other places have done for me, but she didn't listen to me. I have never had my hair thinned before and she only did it on one side, which I think has made it look uneven. Anyway, thankfully they didn't charge me to fix it and it does look better than before, but I am still finding pieces that are uneven that I have had to cut myself to make it look right. I shouldn't have to do that when I paid $70 for a very simple hair cut. read more

I used to go to Linear Aveda on Boylston but my favorite hairdresser left and I was looking for another choice. Joi is across the street from my work in the North End, so I took a chance after rave reviews from some co-workers. I had my haircut by Edna--she was fantastic-- and after I gave her the length I wanted for my hair, she knew immediately what kind of hair cut I wanted. She was extremely funny, lively but also very talented. She did an amazing job making sure that my hair had movement, texture and body. This salon is small and personal and every person working there and getting their hair done is extremely personable and fun-loving. When I called to get a hair appointment at 12noon on that very same Friday for a 5pm right after work appointment-the girl figured out how to fit me in even though I'd never gone there before. I was having an awful hair day and really appreciated her attempt to make my weekend start off right--and I was thrilled when Edna gave me the kind of cut that really lights up my face. If you live in the North End--definately give this place a try. The cut cost me around 60 dollars, if cost is a curiosity/issue. read more

I just got a really cute haircut from Laurie at Joi Salon. I had been growing my hair really long to donate to Locks of Love and I wasn't exactly sure how I wanted my hair cut because it was going to be so short. I just trusted Laurie and I wasn't disappointed. She did a great job. My only complaint is that the salon didn't offer a discount for people donating their hair. Oh well! I love Joi Salon. I have been to Joi now various services and everything has been fantastic. The salon has a laid back, unpretentious and warm atmosphere and everything is extremely clean. For waxing, I HIGHLY recommend Jill who I've been seeing for over 2 years now. She is incredibly sweet and friendly and keeps you sufficiently distracted. But most importantly she is extremely professional and does a great job. Jill has also recently given me a facial. I don't get facials too frequently but I've had enough to have a basis of comparison. This was hands down the best facial I've ever had. The extractions were not too painful and I left feeling super relaxed and refreshed. She gave me some great suggestions for skin care products too - but only upon my request - and she is definitely responsible for a noticeable improvement in my complexion. Can't say enough good things about Jill. I also have been getting my hair cut and colored at Joi for over a year and will not go anywhere else - or to anyone else but Kerri! I started getting hair services after walking out of my pricey salon on Newbury Street almost in tears after what was supposed to be a simple refresh of a haircut and highlights. Kerri is the absolute best - she listens to what you wants and is great with suggestions as well. I haven't walked out disappointed yet. read more

I went to Joi with a BuyWithMe coupon for a facial with Jill and was so pleased with the results. She asked me questions about my skin so she had a good idea of what she was working with prior to starting. She made the extractions as painless as possible and my face was glowing when I walked out. Even better, when I asked the receptionist what the normal price for the facial was so I could give a proper tip...$95! I was floored since I've paid so much more than that on Newbury for far less. My daughter and I came in from out of town to attend a wedding at the Marriott. My daughter who is 10 was a flower girl at the wedding and didn't want a "baby hair due". i love trying out new salons and i had to visit after reading all these good reviews. i had some waxing done with jill and she was hilarious and very easy going. she also is very precise and made sure i loved it before she finished. only downside is that i got pretty lost trying to get there... and it was in the evening so it was a little sketchy, but i will be back! read more

I recently moved to the North End and was so excited that there was a good salon nearby. I have been to Joi twice to see Liz. She is so great. Prior to moving to Boston I had been living in MN where I had been seeing the same person for my waxings for a few years. While I prefer strip wax, Joi uses hard wax (which I don't mind). While it was one of the most painful brazilians I have ever had, it didn't really bother me since Liz is so great. It is never awkward with her! I will definitely be back to see her! read more

I went to joi after a few very unsuccessful and overly priced salons. I have blonde hair and Keri did a wonderful job matching and blending my hair. It took about 2.5 hours but it was well worth it. If your looking to get highlights I reccomend Keri!!! read more

Jill gives an amazing facial. Within minutes, I was already in heaven. When I told her so, she laughed and said "we've only just started." She was right: It only got better. The facial she gives is so luxurious because her massage technique is great and the warm cozy comforters make you want to snooze immediately. But, on top of all that, it was one awesome treat after another as far as the products used ...it felt never-ending! Excellent massage! Very professional, very good... there's even a heated towel to put under your neck when you're lying on your back. I visited Joi Salon using a Buywithme certificate for wash, cut and dry. I was able to get an appointment with Lindsay with less than a week's advance notice. I didn't have a stong idea of what kind of cut I wanted, but I knew I was unhappy with my last cut/style. Lindsay immediately picked up on what was wrong with the current cut, had great suggestions for a new style, and I left with a haircut that I absolutely love. I plan to make Lindsay my regular stylist. Also, Lindsay is super nice and really listens. read more

Even though the salon had just opened at 10am, I was welcomed with big smiles as everyone settled in and took their coats off. I only waited a couple of minutes and didn't mind at all. The salon smelled great, the sun was shining in, and the energy of the place was great. Sometimes I go to salons and feel like I'm stepping in to some exclusive club, but not here. Keri was my stylist and she was great. She even offered some great advice when I asked her about coloring for a potential future session. My cut and blow out were just what I wanted. I told all of my roommates (all blonde) that most of the women working there had beautiful blonde hair and they should consider going to Joi for highlights. I loved that Laura recommended products but was not at all pushy about them. I found the best moisturizer I've ever tried that was recommended to me and I'm really glad she told me about it! After reading the good reviews that Joi received I decided to make an appointment to get a cut. My hairdresser seemed like she knew what she was doing. However, when it came time to blow dry my hair, she made a comment that her next client had arrived, so she would need the assistant to dry my hair. Well, the assistant was busy, so she complained about that , and then made me feel as though she was rushing. My cut was $70, and with the tip $85. The cut was decent, but I will never go back. I don't ever want to spend $85 and feel as though someone is rushing me out the door.... read more

They color my hair perfectly, saving me from a slippery slope toward brassiness when I was doing it myself. I love Joi! I cannot say enough about Briana she is amazing! She is the first hairstylist to do EXACTLY what I wanted with my hair color. On my first visit after breaking up with my longtime colorist, Briana took the time to listen to me and told me we could achieve the color is wanted over time. She did not want to over process my hair any further so we would achieve the color after a few visits. I am so happy with the final outcome of my hair! I no longer have to worry when I go to the salon that I am going to come home with a different color. I go to my appointments with complete confidence that I am going to have the same color that I have asked for. I would and have completely recommended Briana to anyone as a hairstylist. I have been coming here for almost a year to get a Brazilian wax, they're a bit expensive and there's no parking ever, I LOVED BRITTANY but now she moved to California and the person that took over( Laura ) absolutely SUCKS at Brazilian waxing, so for the price paid definitely isn't worth it if your leaving hair there.
